Food that's creative but reliable
Food that's creative but reliable and delicious. By far the most popular dish is the deep-fried Cornish game hen, which is served with killer mac n' cheese and great cole slaw. The pasta of the day is often a must.
Many dishes are rich and the portions are ample, so it's easy to over-order.

The food is really special. Tasty and nicely presented. Although it is rather noisy, when all tables are filled, it is a great place to go with friends.

Great Food Intimate setting
This is our 3rd time and the food has always been fantastic. Love the Cowboy Ribeye and the duck fat fries.
4/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
By far our favorite restaurant in the Sonoma Valley.
5/2/2013 4:00:00 PM
we are foodies from san francisco - when we walked in we thought perhaps we'd made a mistake: a rectangular box, kitchen right front as you walk in (TINY!) aluminum slider windows.....but the FOOD! omg. everything was superb. had house made ricotta gnocchi with sweet pea and lemon sauce and sweet pea micro greens and pistachio. what an amazing dish. lemon dessert out of this world. we will be back and will spread the word!

Great choice in Sonoma Valley
We truly enjoyed our dinner and will recommend to others.

The food was really good but
The food was really good but it wasn't the most quite place to eat. I think the overall of the service
Was good but they could have done a better job. We had four different things and it was all very good

We had one of the most fabulous dinners at Hot Box Grill. And don't get me started on the dessert. I would go back just for their version of Boston Cream Pie. Not only was the food outstanding, the prices were extremly reasonable. I would highly recommend this place to anyone going to Sonoma.

Chose the Hot Box Grill because
Chose the Hot Box Grill because of the online menu. Great choice! Fish of the night was swordfish with a farro rissoto. Delicious preparation. We'll definitely return next time we're in the Sonoma area.

Small menu, quality food. Good portions, priced well. Really like the disassembled presentation of my wife’s meal. Would highly recommend reservations, perhaps on weekends due size. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who wants a quality meal outside your own kitchen.

If you are a foodie, you will
If you are a foodie, you will love this fresh approach. All salads and vegetables are fresh from the garden, pasta and fish special are always fresh and prepared really well. Don't be scared off by the outside of the building this is a hidden gem.

If in sonoma do not miss.
Absolutely great food. Don't be fooled by the diner like exterior.

Sonoma style at its best
We love the idea of amazing, local, fresh food with casual style. Had read an article about the chef's preparation of local, fresh food and the menu lived up to the expectation. Would definitely return again and recommend Hot Box Grill to friends.

Hot Box Review
It was our first visit to Hot Box Grill, but probably not our last. The food was excellent & creative and Service was friendly and attentive. We had read several reviews that made us think the menu would be quite challenging and for serious foodies only. We were pleasantly surprised to discover a menu that did sacrifice taste to the latest culinary fad. Comfort food like Mac & cheese, duck fat fries and ribs are abundant but there are several options for lighter fare too. Don't be fooled by the lack of ambiance...this place serves great food.

We have been to Hot Box Grill several times and once again it did not disappoint. The food is very flavorful using local ingredients. Presentation is creative and fun!

This is the third time I have gone to Hot Box Grill It did not disappoint. There were four of us and we all ordered different items and everyone loved all the food tastes. Definitely go!
7/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Three of us all decided to have the flat iron steak, and I found their menu to be a little limited. We also ordered dinner salads that came with very good focaccia bread and a very flavorful olive oil dip. The assorted greens were tossed in a salty house vinaigrette.
The steaks were all excellent and cooked to order, and the fires were crispy and yummy as they are done in duck fat.
The service was very good and the ambience was fine, not too noisy at all.

Hidden local gem
Had Suri on my phone not told me about this restaurant, we would have easily missed this wonderful experience. Located in an unassuming building, this restaurant hit the mark, especially the night before a big race. Offering local, delicious, freshly in house made selections, this affordable spot should be on everyone's to do list.
7/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
The Hot Box menu is not extensive, but the variety is good and the execution of the dishes was excellent. Everything was fresh, flavorful and well presented. Our party of 4 had 3 different appetizers, 1 soup, 3 entrees and 4 desserts and there was not a flat note in any of the dishes. Minor drawbacks are that the wine list is a little modest and the decor a lit spare.
Don't let the re-purposed store front and busy street location dissuade you. The Hot Box Grill is worth the stop.

Great little food find through YELP! Brussels Sprouts, Tomato Salad & Fries were AWESOME! Skirt Steak good, but not great. They need to work on ventilation or fixing air conditioner, so go late or when weather is cooler. Really, really good!!!

Ready To Return
Every plate and mouthful was amazing...the service was stunningly attentive...the whole restaurant alive and happy. Tiny and unassuming- but literally one of Sonoma's best places to eat. I can't believe that we hadn't eaten there before...and we will most definitely be returning.

Hot Box is Hot!
Fantastic menu. Comfort food at it's best. An unusual wine list that's Small but interesting. Everything we had was delicious.

60th Birthday Celebration
The odd thing was we had a reservation for four. When we were seated there was only one place setting at the table. Even after taking our order and bringing our food we had to ask for the additional place settings. Aside from that, this restaurant is a hidden gem. The menu is small but the food is fantastic. Daily specials are listed on the back wall and provide several options. I would highly recommend the Hot Box Grill to those who love great food.

diamond in the rough
you would walk by this place and never think to stop. but you should stop and stop again. the food was outstanding. fresh and incredible.

Chilled carrot ginger soup with green salsa fired up the taste buds. The dry rubbed ribs are generous in portions and very tasty. My swordfish dish was mouth-watering, likely from the lemon curl sauce; a delectable complement to the fish. And the spicy macaroni and cheese lived up to its award winning reputation. Though not necessarily something we would normally order, the butterscotch pudding was a delightful finish to a splendid anniversary dinner. Wine list was satisfactory.

Wolf in sheeps clothing
Pleasantly surprised with this sleeper. Doesn't appear like much from the exterior but this gem surely packs a punch! Like the 'ol saying goes..." it's what's on the inside that counts". Great service and even better food! We'll definitely be back!

Want great food?
We've been to several "noted" Sonoma dinning establishments (rhymes with Pearl and Dig) and have always been disappointed. Hot Box, which is on no one's radar, exceed expectation...3 times. Great steaks, sides, and sauces. Ambiance is next to nothing but the food and service make up for it. Please don't tell anyone about this place. Thanks

A neighborhood trattoria
Loved the ambiance and the food and wine overall. Delicious appetizers of simply sautéed green peppers and cold corn soup. I had the skirt steak, which was delicious. Husband had the fried Cornish game hen. He loved the slaw and mac and cheese sides but couldn't taste the difference between the hen and conventional fried chicken. Wine list was very nice, featuring small local producers and you can order by the glass, carafe or bottle which meant we could try carafes of a local red and white. Service was great. We will definitely go back.

We just completed our third annual trip to Sonoma for the BR Cohn music festival and that means at least one trip to the Hot Box Grill which says a lot with all of the good restaurants in the area. We love the non-descript building and the amazing food! Service this year was fair at best, which was disappointing because we usually enjoy spending time with our server who we consider to be a kitchen informant. First time all four of us in our party were disappointed by the service.
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very carefully prepared food. Seasonal ingredients. We had delicious sautéed sweet peppers as a started for example. Will definitely go there again.

We have been to the Hot Box a number of times, and it is a very good place to have a good dinner. While a lot of the offerings are fried--which bothers my wife more than it bothers me--it seemed just a half a step off on Saturday night. It's not that we were disappointed, but we just didn't walk out of the place raving about how good it was. "Very good" in my parlance means just that--it was very good, and in prior visits I've thought it was excellent (except when they had the s'mores tart off the menu, which made me grumpy; it's back on right now, so that is not the reason). I guess I'm saying I wish I'd loved it.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very pleasantly surprised by Hot Box. We'd driven past it many times and it looked a bit like a diner and never seemed to be open. So one day when I saw it pop up on Opentable as an option for dinner, we decided to give it a try. So happy we did, because it greatly exceeded expectations. It's a somewhat unassuming place, but don't let that fool you. The food was excellent and felt like what you'd get at a much "fancier" place. My only negative was the service. Our waitress was very good, but she was not very warm/friendly. But don't let that stop you from trying this place, because overall it's very, very good and I can't imagine anyone not loving it.

Stopped in for dinner at 8pm on a Saturday night while staying in nearby Glen Ellen. The small dining room was packed with people and very loud, but the noise level lessened as several larger parties left. Great burger, duck fat fries, and fried chicken.

Meat lovers heaven!
This gem is on Sonoma Highway right in a neighborhood and doesn't look like much when one drives by. We were impressed with the service and the food at the Hot Box Grill. My husband started with fall squash soup with curry cream which he loved. He followed that with pot roast that was cooked perfectly with fall vegetables. I started with a lovely plate of varied heirloom tomatoes with a creamy dressing and rice crackers and then moved on to 1/2 slab of ribs which were perfect with the dry rub. I didn't need to have the sauce on the side because the dry rub was so flavorful. The allow corkage for $15.

Nice little find
The ingredients are always fresh. Our server was a bit slower than usual, but overall a good experience
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is the place to go with a small group, an appetite and order different entrees so you can try it all! Everything was well prepared and the portions are ample. I thought the batter on the chicken was too think but no one else in may group did. We had pot roast, steak, chicken entrees; sides were mac n'cheese, brussel sprouts, cole slaw, potato pancake, onion crisps and the cornbread muffin is amazing! Can't wait to go back . . .

It's the food!
We hadn't been to the Hot Box for awhile and were pleased to find the food was still some of the best in the Sonoma Valley. It's American comfort food at its finest. The fried Cornish game hen was delicious - crunchy on the outside and juicy inside. We also had the daily fish special, Artic char, and it was perfectly prepared. The spicy Mac and cheese side is the best of the best!
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was delicious with a unique menu. Very much comfort food with a twist. I ordered the fried cornish game hen which was similar to a small fried chicken with the most tasty batter. The presentation of this on a cutting board is fun and different. Dessert of a brownie sundae was good. Portions are perfect, not too small or large. Prices are also very good. Overall it is a great place which many people driving by might overlook due to it's exterior look and location.

We ended our trip to Sonoma with this great find, only wish we had found it earlier.
The food was excellent and fresh. The service was excellent and when one of our party want to mix and match two items on the menu the server was happy to accommodate.
What can I say about the Duck Fries and Mac n' cheese, nothing as they were awesome!
We ended our trip to Sonoma and the Hot Box with the Lemon Fool, which was the perfect ending to a great meal and a great stay, as it was memorable.

This restaurant has little pomp and lots of outstanding food. It's one of Sonoma's "sleepers" especially if you want a great meal at a very reasonable price. We drove past it for 2 years before friends recommended making a stop and we're glad we did. Try it---guarantee you won't be disappointed.

One of the best local spots in Sonoma. Really good food, a small and comfortable space with freindly staff.
