We had a fabulous meal at Chez Chose - service was spectacular and the food divine. My husband has Celiac disease and is often required to compromise on restaurant meals...this was not the case at Chez Chose. Thanks!

A fantastic find on rue St Denis
WOW! We found this restaurant through open table, and I embarrassed to admit we live only a few blocks from it and never noticed it. It truly is a "neighbourhood gem." Menu was a chalk board and super creative, with lots of variations so everyone got something he liked. Interesting wine list, and the server was more than happy to help with suggestions. And prices are very reasonable! Anglophones, fear not - the owner is very fluent and learning to say "squab" in place of "pigeon!" We'll definitely be back.

Creative comfort food, locally-inspired and -sourced, family run delight of a place. Daughter in the kitchen, mom behind the bar, dad out front. You can not only feel the love, you can taste it, too. Quebecois joie-de-vivre at it's best.

Outstanding food, lacking decor
It's a shame this place isn't more popular. The food was outstanding and the service was friendly and funny. The decor is unfortunately lacking, which might be the reason it's not more of a hotspot.

Delightful and friendly
I made a reservation based on the glowing reviews written by other guests on Yelp. Upon our arrival, we were met by a very pleasant and funny gentleman who made us laugh within seconds of being seated. He went through the menu with such detailed and meticulous explanations that were all very impressed. He knew his stuff. He had a great sense of humour that made us feel really at home. The food itself was delightful, from the opening soup, to the steak entree, to the wonderful dessert. We were even offered a fruit candy to cleanse our pallet upon leaving. Needless to say I was very impressed with the level of service. Combined with the delicious meal, I will definitely make a return trip the next time I am in Montreal. Thank you so much!

Was in Montreal with girlfriends for a long weekend. I had read good things about Chez Chose and it did not disappoint. Great host, great food and a vibrant neighborhood. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Montreal.

From the moment we walked in - we felt welcome. The host was unbelievably warm and funny! The restaurant was quaint and comfortable. The food was to die for! We were a party of three and each of us enjoyed appetizers, our entrees and desserts. This is a place I will remember for a LONG time!

A great "rendez-vous" !

One of Montreal's best!
For a full week my wife and I dined in Montreal's finer restaurants. It was our first visit to that city. I had compiled/cross-indexed/culled restaurants from sources such as Bon Appetit, Travel & Leisure, Yelp, Frommer's, Fodor's, local newspapers & various websites to compile our possibilities. We had some gloriously fantastic meals—Montreal is ooo-la-la food-wise!
Chez Chose was one of our absolute FAVORITES. The food is inventive and delicious, the service is fun and integral to having a great time. The description of the menu by your host will get you salivating. And the prices are very reasonable!
Bottom line: If we were flying back today for another week, we would make a reservation at Chez Chose immediately. You will love it!

Warm and Delicious
Had a great dinner here. The food was fresh, uniquely prepared - obviously a talented chef in the kitchen. The owner was incredibly warm and hospitable. He went through the entire French menu, not only translating but providing very thorough descriptions of everything. Very relaxed and unhurried.

Delicious food. Charming host.
This was our second visit, and once again, we were not disappointed. This restaurant is well worth the chore of having to find parking. Better yet, take a taxi and enjoy the experience. Everything was delicious, and we were made to feel welcome. We went with guests from out of town, and they are already recommending it to their friends in case they are ever in Montreal.

A GREAT find
In Montreal for the Grand Prix. This was our first dinner of the weekend and it was a treat. Innovative and adventurous cuisine coupled with attentive and friendly service. All of the dishes our group of four had were excellent. The smoked tartare was incredible; the chef's sample of headcheese was uniquely delicious; and the entree's were all excellent (duck, rabbit, seafood and pork). Everything is creatively prepared without the pretentiousness of many restaurants. Well done.

went here last year and was wowed. Didn't think they could pull it off just as well this year, but did. Enthusiastic wait staff and imaginative chef. Will keep coming back...

Fine food locally sourced
We had a fine dining experience at Chez Chose, after choosing them from the TripAdvisor restaurant ratings for our second evening in Montreal during the jazz festival.
The menu was more extensive than we anticpated from visiting their website, with at least eight appetizers and entrees from which to choose. The waiter gave us a comprehesive explanation of the evening's fare from the chalk board he brought to the table, and we opted for several of the locally sources offerings, especially the locally farmed trout and the last asparagus from the local harvest.
All the food was excellently prepared and presented, as well as delicious. The service was attentative, but not smothering; just right.

Extremely helpful and knowledgeable owner explains each of the days blackboard offerings. Also enjoyed the recommended wine pairings. The fish dishes are excellent- my wife enjoyed the lobster risotto with grilled veggies and I liked the salmon trout fillet (from a local fish farm). Pricing is a bit high for a cafe type resto but we saved on the US dollar/ Canadian dollar difference. We noted that a number of locals came in and were warmly received by the owner and his wife.

Food was great with reasonable prices. The waiter (who we think is the owner the way he spoke about the business of being a restauranteur) spent a great deal of time with us translating every aspect of the menu to the four of us. We all thought our meals were special and we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience.

Do not overlook this restaurant!
Had a great meal here, great service team, menu very well explained, and above all, delicious!

We had the discovery menu. The boudin and duck with hocolate sauce were delicious. Excellent service by Bobby.

A treasure of a restaurant!
For the past 4 years, every time I visit my hometown of Montreal, I reserve one night to dine at Chez Chose, which I discovered on Open Table "par hazard", by chance. This gem of a find is family owned and run, with parents out front and daughter-chef doing some mad-genius work in the kitchen. Local ingredients prevail, and fearless Quebecois flair shines through. Chez Chose would hold its own against the very best of New York City's most creative downtown or Brooklyn up-and-coming stars. Ambience that is casual but not sloppy, plating that is thoughtful but not fussy, and flavor combos that may surprise but always pleasantly. And the pricing is extremely fair, with a range to suit most. Go, go, go!!!
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Above and beyond what is considered excellent - the owner's wife even hailed a cab for us!
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Took my wife to Chez Chose for her birthday. It was a memorable evening. Food was excellent as always (4th time), and service provided by Robert, Manon and the young waitress was exceptionally friendly!

Love Chez Chose
We had the best waiter, whose daughter is the chef. Being American, he was very thoughtful to explain every dish and give us his recommendations. We have a glorious meal from start to finish. Highlights were the fois gras, guinea hen, braised steak and deserts of course heavenly. We also enjoyed a bottle of delicious Quebecois Chardonnay and another Alcasian wine which paired perfectly with our delicious food.
After dinner we enjoyed another Quebecois maple whiskey which was a perfect end to a great meal. Will certainly go back whenever we are in Montreal!

J'ai adoré ce restaurant. Le menu dégustation était excellent, très varié. Le service était exceptionnel. Je vais y retourner sans hésiter.

Great food and service..
The menu is on a chalkboard in French. But no worries. The owner (or his wife) will explain everything you need to know. Very nice, down to earth people. Great meal with a lot of seasonally and fresh produce and meat. Wonderful dining experience. Try it. You will enjoy it.

I can't stop raving about this dinner to everyone I know. The menu is extremely interesting with local food choices. The chef's attention to detail is quite remarkable. Every item we ordered had several layers to it. Example, mashed potatoes were with truffle oil and Oka cheese. They were extremely accommodating with my vegetarian friend. The foie gras au torchon has to be THE best I have ever had! I can't wait to return to this great restaurant. The only caveat I would have is the decor. Definitely not a hip city atmosphere but when in good company, the food speaks volumes. Excellent value for the price!

Every bite a pleasure
This evening was memorable, from the jovial maitre d' to the unique aperitif to the to-die-for pot de creme au chocolat in a jar! The theme was maple, but it was by no means overpowering. The rabbit with cheese (Parmentier de lapin de Stanstead confit, champignons poêlés, échalote caramélisée à l’érable, fondant de fromage Alfred et glace de viande) was mouth-wateringly perfect. My only complaint would be that we were given a seat at the very back, with a lot of traffic - even though we had reserved early and are by no means unattractive. ;-)

Wonderful dining experience!
We were there last Saturday, party of 4. We had the tasting menu w/ the wine pairing. The first course, seared scallop w/ shiitake mushroom risotto was sublime. There were appreciative moans around the table. The other courses that followed, rabbit confit, duck heart tartare and venison were good, but the scallop had set the bar high. I would've been more impressed w/ the other courses had they come before the scallop. Still, they were very good. Only the dessert was a little disappointing. It was cubes of panacotta w/ cubes of cake and pineapples. It felt a little plain. Overall it was a great dinner. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. Service was very friendly. Can't wait to go back. Would definitely recommend.

The food was excellent, as was the service. The place was very quiet for a Friday night, but we had a great evening anyway!

A HIDDEN JEWEL
Spent a romantic evening(girlfriend's birthday) dining at Chez Chose. Amazing little find. Charming French Bistro. Elegant, Romantic, Amazing food, fantastic service, and the owners/hosts were so helpful with their suggestions (menu items) . We will definitely be back soon. Would recommend this little jewel to anyone who loves good food and enjoys a relaxing evening out with friends or with that special someone. The whole experience was amazing. 5 stars.OBTW They offer a glueten free menu which was very important to us.

Authentic dining experience
My husband and I recenty ate at Chez Chose on our first trip to Montreal. The staff were so welcoming and helpful considering our ability to speak french is non-existent! The neighborhood was great and it felt less touristy than other restaurants nearby our hotel. The starters - soup for myself and salad for my husband, were excellent. We were able to try something called a tartiflette, which neither of us had before - very rich and wonderful!! My main dish - black cod, was also very well done. Finally, to end the meal, I had a to die for chocolate pot de creme and my husband - a very unusual sorbet.
What a wonderful night!

A wonderful dining experience
Chez Chose is listed as one of the top restaurants on tripadvisor and it definitely lived up to it's reputation. We were a group of 5 and they were very accommodating - even putting back our reservation when we were running late by half an hour. The service was very attentive and enjoyable. The prices were quite reasonable considering the calibre of the food, the bistro ambiance. The wine list was very reasonable as well - with numerous bottles in the 40s, 50s, and 60s as well as more expensive. I would definitely go back.

A Destination Restaurant
We had an excellent time and a fine meal. We were entertained and educated by the owners, who lovingly explained the menu. We were captivated by the wonderful dishes . Superb duck confit and delicious smelt. This is a table to farm establishment and your dishes are prepared by someone who has an out of this world understanding of how to mix flavors, spices and seasonings. How San you resist a menu that has 'the salad of the moment'! We will never go to Montreal without going to Chez Chose for a meal.

What a find!
Frequent visitors to Montreal (from California), we are familiar with many good restaurants there, but this one had escaped our attention until recently. We had a fantastic dinner and will want to return next time. Rabbit had a prominent place on the menu and we enjoyed it two ways. First in a delicious rillette, and then cooked sous vide. The latter was a melt in your mouth surprise, very flavorful and juicy. I wish I had asked more questions about its preparation, but it was a busy night and although the service was excellent, there was not a lot of time for chit chat. My dinner companion ordered the venison which he enjoyed very much as well. Another dish of note was the lobster salad appetizer.

This was our first trip to Montreal together and we wanted to make it special! We started looking at dinner reservation options about a week in advance and this place stood out to us. Concept-style food, locally owned, reasonably priced. The restaurant is in the middle of a great street littered with trendy bars and other restaurants. We had high hopes, but Chez Chose completely blew us out of the water! The waitstaff was fabulous - recommending the perfect wines and appetizers. The food was spectacular, perfect for vegetarians and carnivores alike. Highly recommended!!

Great Little Bistro
Small, intimate restaurant off the "tourist" track in a Montreal neighborhood. The menu is written on a chalk board each day and brought to your table by the multi-lingual wait staff and explained in detail. Food was delicious and like I would envision French home cookeing. Wonderful food and evening.

On y retournera assurément!
