Chef Mavro was one of the highlights of my trip to Hawaii. The food and wine match was exceptional, using local produce with french flair and wines from around the world. Money well spent.

My family visits Chef Mavro once, maybe twice a year. Writing about what's good would be too tedious for me. I can only think of one small thing that I noticed to the less than good: the sommelier described the wines too fast. That's it. We look forward to our next visit.

Dinner at Chef Mavro
Great experience!!. The hostess knew my name and seated us right away. She even held up the tablecloth for us. The menu is different in that you choose either a 4course or 6course prix fix menu. I had the six course and my lady friend had the four. You can also pair wine with each course, which I did. I won't go into each course but it was fabulous! Megan, served most of our courses and patiently explained each. The wine attendant also explained each wine with the pairing. By far the best meal and service I've ever experienced. A couple cautions-don't go here expecting large portions of food, each course is the right size for the course being served. Don't go if your in a hurry, this is a fine dining experience and will take 1 to 2 hours.

Great for Special Occasion
Had a great time. Food is terrific and wine selections were perfect. A bit pricey - so, beware. Service is exceptional.

Our group of 6 thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. It is so rare to find great food in the proper environment, one where you can actually hear one another!

food was delicious
The food was as delicious as the food plating. I did not want to mess up the plate. The food was presented so well I had to take photos of each dish before diving into it. We will be returning to Chef Mavro on our next visit to Oahu.

Great experience, service
Great experience, service was awesome, the waiter gave a thorough explanation of all food items which was very helpful to newbie of French cuisine. The food tasted wonderful and was well presented. The price was high but worth it for a once a year type event.

Perfect for a date
Great service, the staff are very attentive and cheerful. The food are well presented. If you have a taste for wine you Must do the wine pairing... Amazing! It's an amazing introduction to fine dining for me. My date enjoyed it and I recommend it for anyone looking for a nice place to eat.
It isn't cheap but the whole experience is worth the price.

I think it is the best restaurant in the state. Although the portions could be larger, they are magnificent.

Love the wine pairings & spicy ahi
The spicy ahi appetizer was a stand out but every dish was absolutely delicious. Take the wine pairings for some great wines that you can't usually get by the glass. The overall experience is at the level of the world's best restaurants. Looking for an excuse to go back!

Nice food, slightly strange
Nice food, slightly strange decor, but worth a trip out of the hotel to come here

Relaxing and romantic dinner.
Relaxing and romantic dinner. The food was excellent with the abalone "wowing" us with the fresh flavors. The table side presentation of squab with jasmine tea was a special treat. It was flavorful (the poha berry salad popped with flavor!) and cooked to perfection. Each course was a fun taste journey. We especially loved the goat cheese ice cream with strawberry and rhubarb. Service was efficient and professional.

Most adventurous tasting menu
This is one of the best dining experiences my wife and I have had in 43 years together. We had the six-course tasting menu with matching wines. With the amuse bouche, etc. I think we saw nine or ten plates. All were adventurous. Although a few were less satisfying, most were highly unusual and very flavorful, with several tastes I had never before experienced.
We were served by several staff, all polite, personable, and happy to talk about food and drink. And, thank goodness, none told us his/her name!
If you have three hours and $250 (per person), I can't think of a better experience!

Still My Absolute Favorite
There isn't anything I can say about Chef Mavro that hasn't been said before. The food is amazing, the service, impeccable, and the aloha is so well woven through your experience there. Chef Mavro has been my favorite restaurant for a long time and it always will be because you just can't beat the quality and kindness in everything they do. It was a very special evening for my husband and I and everything about our experience made us feel special. Mahalo to the chef and staff.

My wife had a fantastic time
We were there for my birthday but her gift to me was the joy on her face. The food was so flavorful that combining the different foods gave new experiences. Our biggest worry was still being hungry due to the small portions but we left satisfied. The staff was helpful, friendly, courteous, but not snobby. We want to go back even though the cost was $250 for two people.

Outstanding multi-course menu
Outstanding multi-course menu selections. Superb wine airings. Gracious and friendly service.

Fantastic and Creative
Surprised we were able to book a few days in advance, and wholeheartedly enjoyed the experience. Our first visit to Hawaii, and were looking for an artful meal away from the kids. My wife and I wanted to have the degustation experience, and were pleased to find the staff and chef creatively accommodative to our respective food allergies. The wine pairings were somewhat obscure, yet perfect for each course. Recommend an earlier seating (we had 7PM reservations) - we were the last in the restaurant at 10:30PM - we were not rushed but felt a tad guilty. Staff was very knowledgable and perfect in their judgement of our needs.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Hand cooked by the chef himself!
From our entry, the level of service was evident. As we sat, the wait staff always made sure our water was filled and bread plate wasn't empty. As the night went on, the food got better and better. I especially loved the ahi-aleppo pepper and goat cheese-arugula dishes. The wine that was recommended with the squab (Chateau des Jaques, 2010 Moulin-a-Vent "La Roche") was exquisite. What really made my night was when Chef Mavro prepared the squab right in front of us. It made it such a personal experience.

A Special Ecperience
We booked at Chef Mavro off of internet recommendations for "best gourmet food in Honolulu" and we were not disappointed. The seasonal tasting menu was exquisite with choices for 4, 6 or 11 courses with optional wine pairings. Each course was unique, well thought out and exceptionally tasty. We opted in for the wine pairings, which I highly recommend. Our servive was attentive & everyone from our bus person to waiter & sommalier were equally knowledgable. We were thrilled that Donna, Chef's wife, made her rounds to our table to check in on our experience. Be prepared for a $$$$ check...the meals are priced high, but worth it for a special evening out. Not recommended for kids without adventurous pallettes though.

Top Dining in Honolulu
Superlatives fail in writing about Chef Mavro. This restaurant is on a par with some of the finest restaurants in Europe. My companion and I have dined in many Michelin One and Two Starred places in France and Spain, and Chef Mavro is the equal of all of them! The ratings I gave speak for themselves. The only way in which Chef Mavro competes in a somewhat negative sense with those high level Europeans is price--this is one of the most expensive restaurants we have dined in, anywhere--nearly $500 for dinner for two with wine pairings and tip, and that was the least costly of the tasting menus offered! If you have the bank account, though, and want an exquisite dining experience in Honolulu, Chef Mavro is the place to go!

Excellent wine pairings
We went back to enjoy amazing glass of Meursault.
We are not wine connoisseur at all.
But always we can find some new great taste to us here by amazing wine pairings.
8/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Extraordinary! The 6 course dinner was the single best meal that I've enjoyed anywhere.
Presentation and combination of flavors were superlative.
Did not order the wine pairings because I don't drink, but my guests, who ordered them, were very impressed by them.
Expensive, but good value for the money!
Easily the best restaurant in Honolulu!
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
We really enjoyed the preset menu with wine pairings. Service was excellent and the chef greeting was an added plus. Very nice.
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
I love this place
Every time I go to Hawaii, I am dining here and ordering the tasting menu with which you can have small plates of everything they make on the menu at the time---something like 14 courses. They have a great mix of French and local ingredients.

An amazing experience!
Is there better way to celebrate life's special milestones than having a dining experience at Chef Mavro's? We certainly don't think it is possible. We had a lovely evening filled with lovely gastronomic delights and amazing service. Pure magic and luxury! Chef Mavro's is an ideal pairing of heavenly dishes and incredible service. We tip our hats to the Chef for his inspired approach toward food and wine. We were delighted as well by the service, silky smooth, charming and inviting. This was not our first dining experience at Chef Mavro's and it certainly will not be our last :)

True Neighborhood Gem!
This time again, wine selection were EXCELLENT!
We would go back again to just enjoy those rare wines perfectly matched to Chef Mavro's beautiful creation.

Quiet and refined
A great place for a quiet, romantic dinner for two or an intimate meal with friends. Menu choices change frequently, options are a 4, 6 or 11 course prix fixe with "wine pairings." Contemporary Anerucan cuisine with many local ingredients. The pace is relaxed without being slow, service attentive but not intrusive (though I wish our waited would drop the "we" as on "how do we like the food?" "Are we ready for the next course?" Etc.). Good is top notch, very tasty, beautiful presentation, not flashy or gimmicky.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent, but pricey
Although the overall dining experience was excellent, we felt that it was a bit overpriced. We've spent more than we spent here at other restaurants (not in Hawaii), where the food, wine and service were so good that there was no question that it was worth the price and that we would return if in the area. We're not big eaters and we got the 4 course with wine pairing. We thought the wines complemented all the dishes very well and well worth the cost. There might not be enough food for big eaters, but my wife actually took home half of the two main dishes. I guess if you get two meals out of it, it's not really overpriced. :-)

Best restaurant in the country.
Best restaurant in the country. Chef is personally in the kitchen unlike other celebrity chefs. Always have been amazed at the layers of flavor in his dishes. He ceases to amaze me with his culinary passion and imaginative dishes. I always walk away feeling that I had the best dining experience and can't wait to travel back to Honolulu. It is the highlight of our trip. The service staff is extremely attentive. Have been going there since he opened and I am always surprised with his new creations. If you are a foodie, you should not miss going to this place.

We enjoyed our evening as usual. Met Chef Mavro too. Great food and flavors!
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
The six course tasting menu - both traditional and vegetarian - with accompanying wine, is to die for!
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
It's all about the food.
While the surroundings do not lend to the experience itself, the restaurant internalizes the views by showcasing the amazing delicacies it offers. From the amuse bouche to the exquisite caviar presentation, we were absolutely wowed by Mavro. Each plate was exquisitely prepared, plated, and paired with equally exquisite wine. Amongst the many highlights, was the goat cheese ice cream with peppercorn. Absolutely amazing! If we are ever within 100 miles of Honolulu, you will find us here.

At a 5 star restaurant
Mavro's can be viewed as a "shrine" to haute cuisine. Each dish on his menu is presented as a picture on a canvas. Everything is focused upon the food. The furnishings and ambience are quiet & subdued. The restaurant is rather small, with no bar. The only meal offered is the evening one.
Mavro specializes in dishes created from locally grown foods and derives his inspiration from the "rainbow" of cultures, which make up Hawaii. Every one of them is "fresh from the farm" or sea. His courses are set up to present whole dinners. Diners are offered several wine pairings for each dish.
All of our senses are engaged. Mavro's offerings are exquisite to look at and to taste. Everyone should experience Mavro''s at least once in their life!

Outstanding in every way
I absolutely loved this restaurant. The food was amazing, staff and service was reliable and attentive.
The compatibility of Foie Gras and Sauternes were perfect, and the deserts were beautiful and classy!
I always can find some amazing rare wine here.
I can't wait to come back for my birthday this month for the same menu.
It is truly that good.

As always, this restaurant
As always, this restaurant never disappointment. It's fine dining and you pay fine dining price. But you get what you pay for and then some. Service and food always exceptional.

5 Stars in Honolulu
Everything about our dining experience at Chef Mavro was 5 stars! The service was amazing with waiters being attentive but not overbearing. They were prompt, polite, knowledgeable, and helpful, but we never felt they were hovering or staring at our table. We ordered the four course prix fixe, which was plenty of food. We started with a light, beautifully decorated salad that included watercress and fiddlehead fern. Then we were given a piece of perfectly cooked local red snapper that sat on a bed of sautéed spinach and radicchio. Next were two lamb medalions again perfectly cooked with a crepe/spring roll of eggplant on fava beans. I do not even care that much for lamb or eggplant, but both were amazing! Dessert was light and refreshing!
10/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've had dinner here each time we come to Hawaii from New York - once or twice a year since the restaurant opened. It's always been fabulous.

Special birthday celebration
I enjoyed a special birthday celebration at Chef Mavro and was very pleased with the excellent service and memorable food. The watercress salad with filddle head ferns and mushrooms was wonderful - vibrant and so fresh. The tender roasted lobster was the star (my favorite birthday treat) with fresh corn, avocado and Serrano ham on the side. The lamb was perfectly prepared with the tapenade accenting each bite. From start to finish, our food was exquisitely presented and the flavors were fresh/clean/complex. The plating was refined and servings were generous. A memorable birthday dinner brought to a finish with a passionfruit creamsicle.

Superb food and service
Terrific spot for special occasion dining. The prix fix menus offered 4, 6 or 11 course meals and wine pairings! You also had the flexibility to mix or match, as the staff was very accommodating. While the price is high, it is reasonable when you consider the time, effort and creativity that goes into the preparation of each course, and the wonderful unique flavors that Chef Mavro presents in each dish. Presentation is beautiful. and the service is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. We had a great time celebrating a birthday!
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfect for celebration!
Became for my husband's birthday dinner and were not disappointed. We wanted to have an extra special meal because he was away on the appointment for my birthday. We got the large tasting menu and caviar and the meal was phenomenal! We also got the wine pairings which made the most of every course. It is pricey but it was well worth the full experience.
10/22/2013 5:00:00 PM
Food was very good. The ability to move items from the 4- to 6-course menu was very nice, as was the ability to substitute. Wine pairings were just excellent and a wonderful introduction to taste experiences. Unfortunately the Wagyu beef was not worth the upgrade price and was really the only disappointment of the evening, maybe because it was requested 'medium' rather than the chef's recommended rare or shashimi style.

All around excellence
Team Chef Mavro delivered seamless service, inspired presentation with wonderful display of knowledge of ingredients and techniques of fine cuisine.

Excellent place for holiday memory
This is our second visit as our 7th anniversary. The food is excellent and the ambience is perfect for a special occasion. Chef Mavro is as friendly as before. Good presentation with local ingredients. The only drawback is wine matching system. Although wines are carefully selected and good value, it lacks a little bit of flexibility and limit the customer's opportunity to select it. Anyway, this is the place to go.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
I know coming in that this restaurant is not cheap. So price point did not deterred me. The service was impeccable. It was raining a little outside, and the guard at the parking escorted us with umbrella to the front door!. The staff, throughout the evening were courteous, polite, helpful, thoughtful, without being intrusive. They didn't look down on us just because we were first time customers. Although I find it odd, they remove table wares as soon as we are done with them. The décor and ambience is just perfect: vibrant, but not noisy.
On to the food. We cleaned every plate. The chef poured his heart out to make this menu. Also, they served amuse bouche and a fruit plate on top of the menu. Can't wait for our next time.
