fun sunday jazz brunch
If you are crazy enough to wait 90 minutes for Sunday brunch in Fells Point, this place isnt for you. Make a reservation, walk right in and enjoy the jazz, the nice atmosphere, good service and fresh unique food. Eastern European food is normal homecooked food that so don't be afraid of the name. I tried the Red Storm which was great. Scrambled eggs with keilbasa and greyere cheese between 2 wonderful big and not heavy potato pancakes finished with hollandaise sauce. It was almost too much food, lol. Small fry had The Big Boy Breakfast which had French toast, pancakes. Eggs, Bacon, polish sausage and cubed home fried potatoes. The only drawback was the polish sausage which was a little grainy for our tastes. Highly recommend.

Jazz & mimosas ...good day starter!
It had been a long time since my last visit......same coziness....great bar.....but the food was less memorable. Bacon was crisp & delicious, the French toast also a hit, but the pancake fell flat (no pun intended). I'm Polish so my standards might be too high, but this place advertises itself as an Eastern European restaurant so that Polish sausage shoulda rocked! It didn't. To be fair, the potatoes were plentiful & crisp......I'm just not a potato person. Now for the scrambled eggs....."uninspired" sounds like I'm a foodie, and I'm not, but that's probably the best description.
The jazz trio playing July 28th was spectacular, but even with live music the place only had about 8 patrons @ 11:30 on a Sunday morning! Look for a reason.

Ze Mean Critique
The decor was uniquely quaint! The furniture was antiquely nice! The waiter and waitress were friendly and helpful! The food was exquisitely delicious! Timing was poor however! It took a long time to get our appetizer! Out of the nine entrees served, one came out about ten minutes later than the others! Overall, everybody enjoyed it!

Eastern European Food and Great!
Eastern European can be hard to find. The dining area is cozy. The Slavic band was charming. Service was very good. The food is authentic and delicious. The price is fair. We arrived on time but there was no parking close by. Because I was wearing heels, we decided I would wait at the restaurant while my husband parked the car and walked back. This took a very, very long time. He had to walk about ten blocks from the garage in which he finally parked. When we left we tried to walk it, but got lost in a not-so-great part of downtown Baltimore as night was closing in. We flagged an off duty cab who kindly took us to the car. My suggestion - arrive early, park in a garage, hail a cab to the restaurant and then back to your car.

Jazz Brunch Winner
The ambience, cuisine, service, mimosas and live jazz music were superb. I suprised my singer/poet hubby with a spontaneous brunch date and he couldn't stop smiling. The Hungarian and Slavic dishes were prepared with great care and finesse. I loved the borsch and goulash. The dessert, not your average apple pie and vanilla ice cream, was a delightful treat. It was homemade, served warm and featured a crust with just the right blend of crunch and flakiness to support succulent spiced apples. A light drizzle topped the pie slice and ice cream in complement , a rare feat, accomplished, and gratefully so, without the unappealing sugary overload.
Soon to become one of my favorite local/ european experiences.

My husband and I had dinner at Ze Mean Bean Café after running the Baltimore Half Marathon and I have got to say, wow!!!...what a great meal. Love the atmosphere as well. It is really cozy and they had a fantastic jazz trio playing that night, which added to the ambience. Overall, terrific time! We will return soon!

I'm gluten intolerant, which excludes me from much of the traditional slavic menu at Ze Mean Bean. Wanting to try something other than the holupkis, which I've had both other times I've dined here, I asked about the Chicken Kiev. It's breaded normally, but the chef was willing to make me a special, gluten-free version of the dish. Served with a salad and green beens, it was fantastically delicious. My partner had the crab meal and was in heaven the whole time. Paired with an appetizer of borscht, some chardonnay, and the guitarist, it was a lovely and romantic evening.

We had a lovely lunch. The service was perfect - we took the servers recommendations and were so pleased! It was quiet, so we could talk and eat and enjoy our time together. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone.

Almost like my mother's cooking
Great neighborhood place in Baltimore. The food was terrific, reminded me of my grandmother's and mother's home cooked Ukrainian meals. Will come back and bring friends.

We enjoyed a great variety of foods. Everything was delicious! My husband lived in Hungary for nearly 2 years, and the Hungarian goulash took him back to Kaposvar. Our server was wonderful. The lighting is a bit dim for reading the menu (small font size). We will definitely return; a definite gem in Baltimore!

Whenever both service and
Whenever both service and quality of food is good it's a plus then we orderede a wine off the menu and the server told us honestly they did not have that wine, offered another option , let us taste it all for the same price per glass.
