We'll go back
We celebrated our wedding anniversary here and the staff was very attentive and kind. We enjoyed the food, which tasted very much like home (Germany). Although we are vegetarian it was very easy to find something for our taste and the cook even prepared something which was not on the menu. In addition cost/ benefit was very good too!We would recommend this restaurant without hesitation.

I've been going to Cafe Berlin for years. It has consistently (very rare for most restaurants) has great food and service. I have never been at all disappointed in either. Portions are sized moderately and they have a great desert selection In the summer they have a very nice outdoor setting area.

best date ever!
We had a request for an entree not on the menu that was our favorite meal - the waitress asked the chef and he said it would be no problem. It was delicious and filling - not particularly cheap, but it came with a great salad. We had strudel for desert. It was a beautiful evening for outdoor dining.

Enjoyed dinner before a Folger Theater production. Server was very friendly. Food took quite a while, however. Glad we gave ourselves plenty of time to get to the show.

What's not to love
German-style food in a friendlty neighborhood setting---on a nice summer evening it makes for a pleasant experience, whether inside or outside. Portions are large and the food is tasty.

Great for a business lunch
Quick in and out, easy to get a table, good service, quick service
Not good for vegetarians though... but what do you expect, it's a German restaurant!

If you like German food and
If you like German food and have trouble finding something approaching authentic without spending a ton, try this place. The food was great! It brought back loads of memories! It did seem a little Americanized, though, but I would definitely go back again. The service was excellent, neither overbearing nor forgetful, our waitress seemed to be there exactly when we needed her.

Charming, delicious, and authentic!
LOVED this spot for brunch. We couldn't sit outside due to weather but would like to come back to enjoy the patio. Indoors was great and we were happy in there -- we loved how authentic and cozy it was and the older German vibe. They don't try to be sleek and modern; rather it is unpretentious, nice, and they focus on the service and food. Both were phenomenal. I ordered Groesstle, a skillet dish (eggs, potatoes, chicken, gravy and DUMPLINGS!!!) and my boyfriend ordered the Schlachtplatte. We also got some great rhubarb/cheesecake and apple strudel desserts and they didn't disappoint. We will definitely return for many different occasions!

We enjoy this restaurant for good food, comfortable settings inside and out, diverse menu and dependable service. Great place to bring out-of-town friends or just relax on our own.

Ask for the Austrian red wine -- it is sublime. The potato pancakes are delicious. I enjoy their seasonal selections. Great place.

German food at its best
My son found this restaurant and wanted to try it. It could not have been better. I go to Germany every year for business and have for 20 years. It was very authentic and the service was great.

A perennial favorite
One of my long time favorites, we eat here about once a month, it is very quiet in the summer

Great German food and beer
Great german food - try the Draft Lager! Nice and quiet, tucked away near Union Station/Capitol.

Great food & great service!!!
We love Cafe Berlin!! We've gone there with big groups over the years and always had wonderful food and service. Recently we've gone there on a couple occasions for lunch and brunch with a big group and babies/kids. The staff has been very accomodating and the service continues to be stellar. It's not easy to go to a nice restaurant with that type of group and feel that you're getting a great meal, great service, and even have some privacy while not disturbing other guests (set us up in a long table in the back room on our own) - but Cafe Berlin makes it happen! Looking forward to returning often to enjoy their delicious German cuisine!

Great German food in a nice setting
Food was great, nice outdoor patio with a great Capitol Hill location
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our server was very nice (I think her name was Patricia) and accommodating. The food was very good and we would go back. The only negative was that it was a little pricey, but for a special occasion worth it.

Well done German food
If you are looking for something different this is worth a try. Traditional German recipes combined w/a seasonal menu emphasizing local sources. We had a knowledgeable and well trained waiter who handled our table of six flawlessly. Very nice outdoor dining is available.

Great German Food in DC
As tourists of DC, this was a great find. The food was great as well as the service. If you are looking for a quiet meal during the week, this would be the place.

Quaint, tasty, but obscure
Almost walked right past this place, but glad we found it. Food and service were excellent for Sunday Brunch. $15 bottomless Mimosa, but make sure to order it that way, or $6 each! Food is well prepared and filling. Not your typical brunch though. Better than any other tourist brunch at a hotel. Portion is enough to satisfy without the usual overeating.

Dinner was good as usually.
Dinner was good as usually. The summer menu is great, fresh and light. Always good place to dine and chat with out-of-town guests.

A pretty little secret
I had a group of about 14 there. Our waiter was just great and so accommodating. This place is almost hidden in the street but that's what made it so quaint. The food was just off the walls crazy good! The bottomless mimosas were also definitely worth it, especially if celebrating a special occasion. Great place to take people visiting DC too!
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sauerbraten and salmon both excellent, service friendly, efficient, and unobtrusive. I'm going back.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Recent new management has made this pillar of Hill dining even better. Been going here for almost 30 years! Great example of authentic ethnic food, not an Americanized version.
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Authentic German Food!
Cafe Berlin's menu has authentic German food (schnitzel, spaetzle, bratwurst, etc). There is a nice outdoor seating area and the waitstaff are extremely friendly. If you don't like German food, there might not be other options available but this IS a true, German restaurant and you won't be disappointed.

Excellent! - Again
We had a reservation and were going to be a little late. I called and was accommodated with no problem. Not our first time here, and we had the same experience as each and every other time - excellent food, service, value, etc. We'll be back! By the way, while there, a tour bus arrived for dinner. We were never overlooked and all went very smoothly. Not all restaurants can do that without skipping a beat!

Don't miss this gem of a restaurant
After a delicious meal accompanied by an elegant Austrian red wine and an aromatic beer, my husband looks at me and says - why didn't you bring me here before? Cafe Berlin and its staff couldn't be more perfect - large outdoor patio, top grade service, superb food and near a metro, major stops with easy parking for those who drive. Can't wait to go back for Oktoberfest.

If you love German food or want to try something different, Cafe Berlin is the place to explore. The menu offers the best German dining experience in town. The staff are friendly and courteous, the food is absolutely delicious and the ambiance is divine.

welcome to baveria
Decent scene. reminded me of Germany. Food was very good. It is hard to find good traditional German cooking. Was a bit on the salty side but still good.

Authentic, well prepared German
Authentic, well prepared German dishes. The only thing missing was a selection of fish, but there were plenty of excellent choices to fill that deficit.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Each year, I make an effort to have dinner during Oktoberfest here. This year, I chose the pig's knuckle and it was great (and huge). The beer in a chillded mug was perfect as was the Black Forest Cake. The server was good and courteous.

Great German Food
Food was outstanding and obviously made from fresh ingredients. We especially enjoyed the German beers available. Will definitely return when in this area of DC!

Great all year round but especially at Oktoberfest. Enjoyed a feast of wursts and Oktoberfest beer.

Cafe Berlin is one of those neighborhood places that we've been coming to for years. We stopped coming after the place changed ownership & we had a particularly bad meal. Thankfully we came back as we wanted to dine outside & CB does have a pleasant patio. The meal was wonderful. Everything from the pork terrine to the pig knuckle to the roasted pork with dumplings & cabbage was deliciously reminiscent of the old Cafe Berlin. We still miss Peggy & Irene, the former owners who gave the place so much character. However, the German food is back on top. A tip: go when you can eat outdoors & when Thomas is in the kitchen.

Oktoberfest is Hectic But Fun
We went to Cafe Berlin on a Saturday evening after a Folger Consort performance. It was very busy because Oktoberfest was in full swing (we had reservations). The wait staff were scurrying like crazy and the hostess was looking for empty tables with a look of panic in her eyes. Service was a bit slow because of the crowd and the special Oktoberfest menu. Despite that, everyone was having a good time. The management gave us extra 0.3 liter glasses of beer because we had to wait so long for our food. You go to a German restaurant at this time of year, you have to expect this. The food was excellent, and the staff remained cheerful and attentive.

Love the Reuben sandwiches
Love the Reuben sandwiches and the daily soups. Nothing beats lunch on the Cafe Berlin patio on a beautiful Fall day.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We took out-of-town friends for dinner on a soggy Friday evening. The dismal weather discouraged us (but not others) from eating outside under the awning, which we had wanted to do, but it was a very satisfying meal. The hostess was prompt and very welcoming, our waiter was pleasant and appropriately attentive, and the food, beer and wine met all our expectations, from the Metzger Platte appetizer plate to the Wiener Schnitzel to the Wurstfeast and finally the pastry platter. The ambience is cheerful and understatedly Germanic, and it was easy to converse despite the six talkative gentlemen who occupied a table near us. Every one in our small group was pleased.

We were a group of 8, and everyone enjoyed their meal. There were lots of good choices in appetizers and entrees, and the German beer was a very nice addition to the meal. This is the most authentic German restaurant we have been to since living in Germany! We love it!

As Always, Wonderful
Café Berlin is one our favorites in the District. While there are new owners, it is still the Café Berlin we have learned to love over the years. The food we had is as great as it has been. That the new owners worked for the prior owner obviously helps with continuity. The new owners are smart. The have not reinvented the wheel. While they have freshened the interior, they did not make the mistake many new rest. owners make in redoing a successful place to where it is unrecognizable from the original. The great Café Berlin food is still there and the interior has not been redecorated into an Apple store clone.
Our thanks to the owners and our wonderful waiter.

Fantastic simple German food with great German beer on tap.

Lights too bright
The new beige paint look cleaner, but combined with the overly bright sconces the whole room felt like a cafeteria. We miss the warm feel of the older room. Maybe turn the dimmers down a little more?

Wonderful menu - had to recommend something as it's all good. Especially the wild game menu when it's offered.
Also the blue wine (hot spiced wine as a dessert) was said to be wonderful by my partner.
Romantic or small group - it works for all.
Get the Goulash as an appreitzer - great.

We've been dining at the Cafe Berlin for over 20 years and have never been disappointed!

We were looking for a great German restaurant while traveling to DC, I think we found it. The food was excellent, service was great. The decor didn't scream German to me, it was more of a classic look - white linen tables and clean walls, I think I saw 1 beer stein which was the only indication we were at a German restaurant. The food was authentic and the menu seemed to have something for everyone.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Not enthused about German food.
The food was good, but my favorite kind of food. Very heavy, hearty food. Quaint atmosphere. Nice server. Excellent beer.
