Genoa is a special occasion
Genoa is a special occasion dining spot. The food was excellent, the waitstaff superb, although there was a VERY long wait for our first course. Not sure what was happening there, as other tables did seem to be served in a normal amount of time. The other thing that I found interesting was the way a corkage fee was applied. Have never encountered a place that charged by the person instead of by the bottle. Part of that fee was discounted by a chef's "comp", but still, rather unusual. It was a very pleasant experience, but again, due to both the cost and reserved ambience, one reserved for very special occasions.

My wife and I had our 27th wedding anniversary dinner at Genoa. As usual, it was an outstanding experience and well worth it. The staff is always friendly and never stuffy. Unlike many places, they all seem to enjoy their work and enjoy seeing the guests have a good time. This was our first visit with the new menu format where one chooses from a selection for each course. We approve!
We both enjoyed every course immensely, even when it wasn't exactly as we had envisioned it. I do not mean this as a negative; they surpassed our imagination in every way: better, tastier, and more attractive. I had several things that I normally wouldn't, and don't regret it at all.
I heartily recommend Genoa. You can't go wrong.

An excellent evening
Fabulous everything! Expensive and well worth the cost.

The chef has changed and now
The chef has changed and now offers 3 options per course, which I do like better, but the food isn't as creative and amazing as it was before. Two of my courses, I actually didn't like much at all but my husband helped me eat them so it didn't look like didn't eat them as I didn't want to be high-maintenance. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty good, but just not every course AMAZING. I didn't care for my wine pairings either as they were so sweet they were giving me a stomach ache, but on last course, learned they would be happy to find me something more to my palate next time. Good to know.

Seeing Food in a New Way
Genoa delivers in a creative, eye-popping manner, causing diners to see & taste ingredients used in ways they never dreamed possible. On top of this, the presentation of each dish resembles a modern, beautiful painting on plain white "canvas" dishes. My dining partner and I chose the five course tasting menu with wine pairings, and each of us had different dishes and wines. Several of the grape varietals were ones we had never heard of, much less tasted. Sheer genius on the part of the sommelier who chose them! Jeff, our water, was happy to answer any of our questions about ingredients, their preparation and procurement. If you're a true foodie or are celebrating a special occasion, this is THE place in Portland to go.

Great food, great service
The food and service were fantastic! However, we were not prepared for the slightly uppity feel to the restaurant, especially given its SE Portland location. Had we been prepared, this would have been fine.

We went for Portland Dining Week and were quite impressed. Most of the restaurants we've been to with prix fixe menus like this were French and it was great to try something new. Service was wonderful. The decor is lovely and the small seating area with double fire places makes for a very cozy feeling. Most of the wine pairings were good and a few excellent. We will definitely come back to try the full menu.
6/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed Genoa, but agreed that our meal at Beast was more memorable and of better flavor for around the same price. Genoa had some interesting and creative Italian dishes, whereas Beast's French cuisine was more traditional and simple... but the taste of Beast seemed more spot on than Genoa's. We wouldn't not recommend Genoa, but would probably recommend a few other places above it.

It's been here since the 1970s, excepting a few years of closure, and the reopened version is as good as ever. Their five-course fixed-price dinner is an evening's entertainment, with delicious food and elegant but not pretentious service.

We ate at Genoa during Portland
We ate at Genoa during Portland Dining Month and had a fabulous three course meal with wine pairings for under $50 each. The lamb dish melted in my mouth.
6/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
We tried Genoa after being on my list of places to try for a long time. Tried it through Portland Dining Month. Wonderful dinner. Great presentation, well seasoned, good food portions. Desserts were quirky and a little pricey
6/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a very knowledgeable woman waitperson--very pleasant also. The food was wonderful and we had a terrific evening.

NOT WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE
A friend and I were celebrating our mutual June birthdays with dinner at Genoa. Didn't know what I was expecting--but something more akin to an Italian restaurant. In its new guise, this long-admired Portland seems dark and ponderous. The dining room is formally gloomy with dark wood and two rooms. This is in contrast to the food--there's a lightness to the cuisine that is at odds with the decor. There's a quiet calm here that is almost too calm. I hate noisy restaurants, but this isn't church either.
Service here is very attentive and warm without being intrusive. The wine steward and our waitress couldn't have been more gracious or helpful.
We had a pleasurable time at Genoa. But I'm being reverential about a dining experience.

Prepared with care
Nicely thought-out menu for Portland Dining Month. Choice was of two distinct menus for this special dining month: vegetarian and meat-based options, both well prepared and served with care. Selections explained without pretense. Good wine pairings for each option, or if one prefers to make a wine selection, there's an extensive wine list. Good experience for our introduction to Genoa.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was the very best "dining experience" I have ever had. It is not just a meal. It is an experience. We came for the Portland Dining Month, added the wine pairings and could not have been happier. The food was just ethereal. I have never had anything like it. Cocktails before at the sister restaurant next door were great and our martinis at Genoa were just lovely. It was more than we have ever spent on a meal, and worth every penny.
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Every course was amazing. Well balanced flavors and great presentation, down to the small chocolate and cookie we got at the very end of our meal. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and each course was perfectly timed. I would spend millions of dollars here if only I had that much!

Over the top in more ways than one
Exquisite food served in ridiculously small portions. It is all show and no substance. Pretentious wait staff who really love their food. Emphasis on their food. This is really lovely cooking that is prepared to within an inch of it's life for people who like to talk only in superlatives about food and the experience. As someone who has enjoyed food from street food in the 3rd world to 3 stars in Paris, I would say that Genoa has slipped from the sublime to the absurd. They are to food what Christo is to art. Is this really necessary?

Great place for a long dinner
Had a wonderful evening enjoying the portland dining month menu. The food was excellent as you'd expect. And the service was
un-intrusive and patient. The 3-1/2 hrs we spent there just flew by.
6/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
It had been awhile since we've
It had been awhile since we've been to Genoa, but it's still the best restaurant in town. Wonderful food, perfectly match with the wine. A great experience with prompt professional service.

Enjoyable evening and did
Enjoyable evening and did the 3-course June menu with friends.

Still impresses me after 40+ years
Genoa has been around since 1971. My first visit was in the late 70's and I thought it was marvelous back then. It's even better with the remodel. Took my husband for the first time and he loved it too. Yummy yummy and happy happy.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
So nice to have the wait staff
So nice to have the wait staff really know the food and wine well; professional and still friendly. (Kudos to whoever hires and trains, as well.) The food was fantastic!
6/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Genoa remains a classic
I always think my most recent dinner at Genoa was the best dinner of my life -- until I eat there the next time. Fabulous, memorable and surprising as usual.
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Will go to Genoa again
Delicious and creative without being pretentious. The 5-course prix fixe menu for $65pp ended up leaving us both stuffed. You get to select from 3 options for each course and out of our combined 10 picks, 9 of them I would definitely have again.
7/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Old school fine dining
The five course meal provided many choices, several for each course. The attention to detail--from the gorgeous plating to the mixture of colors, textures and flavors--was artful. Each course was an appropriate size; we left quite full, but not over-stuffed. It was a relaxing and unhurried meal in a lovely, quiet space.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We enjoyed all the dishes we ordered, particularly the Sepia Agnolotti filled with smoked potato. This is a very creative Italian chef that brings interesting ingredients together for great flavorful food.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wine service good
We brought our own bottle and it was decanted away from our table. I would have preferred having it done at our table. I know it can be messy at times but I would like to see the condition of the cork especially for older bottles.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Meal Great Serviec
One of the best meals ever eaten. Well rounded meal with perfect wine pairing. One of the most knowledgeable and skillful servers I have ever had. Knew when to swoop in and when to leave, which is a surprisingly difficult trait to find. Only complaint, which has nothing to do with the restaurant but with their clientele, was the loud group of snobby grad students seated in the center of the room, which was somewhat disturbing. A job well done Genoa.
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been to genoa twice within this past month and its been excellent both times! Great unique dishes and I was glad to have the option for just three courses as I try to eat lighter at night. Wonderful to have a delicious meal that is not overfilling
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wine & Food match perfection!
The wines chosen to accompany the first four courses were excellent for each. Can't remember when the wine food combinations were so enjoyed by both my wife and myself.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Genoa never fails to impress; food was fantastic both visually and to taste. Ambience and service was very good. Oh, forgot the glass of Italian red wine---yum, yum, yum! Excellent place for a special treat!
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I have been to this restaurant in the past and were pleased, but not overwhelmed. This last Saturday we gave it another try and were very impressed. The service was excellent, the food was exceptional and we felt even more comfortable in the quiet unassuming ambiance of the restaurant space itself. I especially appreciate that the table spacing is generous, so that you are free to have an intimate conversation at the table without fear of a neighboring table listening in. All and all, a delightful experience.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Exquisite Food, Fantastic Service
This was my wife and I's first experience with such a high caliber restaurant. We we started to worry when we didn't recognize half the things on the menu. Our waitress was fantastic and went through each dish to let us know what they were. The food was amazing, the restaurant is nice and quite, the staff goes above and beyond. Plan 2 1/2 to 3 hours for your meal. Its a five course meal. Will be going back again!
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is incredible. 1st and 2nd course were my favorite: cured hamachi and a squash raviolo. I was not as impressed with the prawns and radishes, but the halibut and chocolate dessert were incredible. Our server (Haywood) was knowledgeable, charming and professional. I've never been to a restaurant that charges each diner a corkage fee for only one bottle. Hardly affected the experience though. The ambience was beautiful, service was wonderful, and the food was incredible!
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Another outstanding meal at Genoa. From the beginning to the end, our food was delicious. I'd give Service four and a half stars, I took off a half star because we had difficulty getting coffee at the end. (Mostly due to everyone being busy with the other customers.) I would highly recommend Genoa for any special occasion!
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Genoa is all about the food;
Genoa is all about the food; every course is prepared to perfection. This is a place to enjoy the best slow food in the Northwest. The waiter & sommelier are first-class, and some of the best in Portland. The last time we had food and service this memorable we were in Trastevere. Don't come here unless you have 2-3 hours to enjoy a very special meal in true Italian tradition.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Food, Spendy Wine
The five course fixed price menu is superb. Portions were perfect, and some of the dishes were notably well conceived. The paciing could have been a bit better but that is nitpicking. What isn't nitpicking is the wine list--its overpriced in my view. There are very few middle of the road "gems" that the best restaurants in Portland offer, and the high end wines carry east coast prices.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything was great ! The food and wine pairing were outstanding ! A night to remember forever:)
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellence at Genoa
We had dinner on a Saturday evening, celebrating a birthday. Every single bit of food either of us had was delectable. The wine pairings were perfect for both of our choices. The servers were friendly, kind, informative and knowledgeable--they made us feel cared for and appreciated. The best (albeit also the most expensive) meal I've had in Portland for awhile!
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Dont miss it. We go every month the menu changes and are never disappointed.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
An Unforgettable Anniversary
We celebrated our 14th Anniversary at Genoa. The service was perfect, every attendant had incredible knowledge of the wine parings (a must with the meal) and every course was amazing. Best Meal Ever!
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious food, friendly service, but very slow. We arrived at 7pm and left at 10pm. There was no bread basket to bridge the gap of 25 minutes between courses. If our experience was condensed to a two hour meal, I would have rated them five stars.
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Worth the price
Every dish, from the preliminary snack, through the dessert, seems like a carefully crafted piece of work, with ingredients, colors, sauces, textures and tastes perfectly blended to make each of the five courses a visual and sensory pleasure. The chicken and the lamb both reached that "I've never tasted something so delicious and interesting" level. And unlike most places, none of the courses or dishes disappointed. The revamped decor is luxurious and private, while also giving a great sense of everyone else's enjoyment of the same thing I am. Finally, the service was impeccable. Helpful, but not arrogant or pushy. We walked away with the sense that the wait staff really loved being there. What a treat of a dining experience!
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
It's the experience
The food was mostly great and the service was great. I think that the experience of Genoa is the really special aspect. People do not typically dine with such distinct courses and over such a long period of time. It requires you to be patient, to slow down, and to savor the experience. And even though the portions were small, I actually felt full by the end because the food is rich and because the act of dining took a couple of hours.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful, as always!
My wife and I have been coming to Genoa for special occasions for the past ten years - birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas Eve, etc. We have been there through changes in ownership and approach, but the quality of the food and service has never wavered. We were there again last Friday evening with our close friends, celebrating their wedding and our birthdays. And of course, Genoa did not disappoint. The meals were all amazing, the service was fun and friendly and attentive, and we left feeling happy and satisfied. Thanks for another great night, Genoa.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
never a surprise
It is always a pleasure to expect the unexpected and never be disappointed. Our taste buds can't wait till our next visit.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fantastic All Around
This was our second time here and it was every bit as wonderful as the first time. I brought my mother here for her birthday and everything was top-notch. Our server even remembered us from the previous visit which I thought was impressive. The food is always to die for and we had a great table next to the fireplace. The pace of the service was excellent. I let our server make my wine selections based on the courses and my taste and it was just perfect. It's definitely worth the extra expense to dine here. Thanks Genoa for making my mom's evening so special!

Special event meal
Genoa keeps it's reputation as a premier Portland restaurant. Impeccable yet friendly servers, passionate sommelier, inspired chef. Buono appetito!

Went here for a romantic birthday dinner with my spouse. The five course meal with reserve wine pairing was more than we could have imagined. One of the top restaurants we have ever been to.

A restaurant for those who appreciate great food and amazing talent as a chef
