Too many changes in so little time
I've been to Kushi multiple times. I live 2-3 blocks from it so it's a shock to me that they had their renovations to accommodate people and forget about the ambience which adds up a lot in a restaurant's service as well. They removed the sushi bar and squeeze them all in their barbecue spot in their massive kitchen. I missed their wide variety of sushi. Don't get me wrong but their food is still awesome. They added some but removed a lot though.

This was my third visit to
This was my third visit to Kushi and the food as usual was superb. For the first time the service was off--a member of our dining party added another Donburi bowl to their order mid-way through the meal. The bowl never showed up. While the waiter did apologize for the mistake he brought the pork belly skewer to the table instead of the pork belly bowl. Otherwise the experience was great.

Food was great as usual, but
Food was great as usual, but the kitchen was really disorganized that night. We had several orders that never made it to our table and the server had to go back and forth unnecessarily. Not sure what was going on there. All in all, we had a great time.

Kushi is a great spot. The food is so good and there are a ton of different options. The sushi is great, but I like to get things off the wood grill as well. And the sake options are great.

Kushi is a good and fun restaurant
Kushi is a good and fun restaurant with interesting offerings, especially if you sit at the robata bar. Unfortunately, it used to be better when it offered sushi (and also had a sushi bar) -- this is primarily because the sushi was so very good. I moved here from SF and don't offer the "good sushi" compliment easily, but Kushi had good sushi. I just wish they hadn't changed their menu.
We had the pork belly donburi bowl, daikon salad, lots of sake, salmon belly and asked for off-the-menu sake (salmon) sashimi. the pork belly donburi bowl (and the salmon sashimi) were delicious. everything was good - but those items were really good.

Great Wednesday dinner with friends
Went to Kushi on a quiet Wednesday night to catch up with some girlfriends. Coming in at 7pm, it was pretty quiet and our waiter was fun and attentive. We started with a round of cocktails -- good but the saki blossom was a bit on the sour side -- and then switch to Kiran on draft. Food wise:
Spicy tuna roll (one of the best I've had in DC), shrimp tempura roll, pork belly skewers, brussel sprouts, mini chicken bowl
In all I will definitely go back, service was much improved over my last visit. Next time I want to branch out into nigiri sushi as well -- I've heard good things about the white tuna.

Love this place
I simply love this place! Try to sit at the bar if you can - it's great to watch the food being cooked. Actually this is how we found one of our favorite dishes - the crispy duck thigh - on a previous visit. Don't miss the fried chicken - it is the best I have had in the area.

DC's Best Japanese Restaurant
Kushi has a young, hip vibe. We went on a Saturday night. The restaurant was crowded and very lively. It is fun for groups or a date. We had a window side table with wooden stools near the bar. The sushi and yakitori/kushiyaki (grilled items on a skewer) were both excellent. The service is good but not great; they forgot one of our dishes. I would rate it as the top Japanese restaurant in the DC area. However, it is pricey at over $50 per person with drinks.

Freshest Affordable Sushi in D.C.
Kushi is a great spot for affordable sushi. It is fresh, the restaurant decor is simple but nice, and the service is excellent. Can't complain -- and I have been back since my OpenTable reservation!
4/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
The quality of the sushi was great, very fresh. They also had a wide variety of other Japanese dishes that we fantastic as well. One of the specials on the menu was whole, live sea urchin, and it was amazing.

I love the place, the decoration
I love the place, the decoration and layout is really nice, the place have a big tables as well as small ones. We make a reservation because were not sure about how busy will be, but there were plenty of open tables. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The slow grill pork was delicious, my favorite dish was a spicy tuna over sushi rice, simple but amazing. We also try the cold udon noodles with sesame and wakame, which was refreshing and tasty. Service was well-timed and friendly, the waiter help us to navigate the menu and was eager to suggest dishes and help us to choose from there selection of sakes. Overall was a great experience, is was a bit expensive, but for us was a special occasion so we were willing to splurge.

I thought the food, drinks, and service at Kushi were great! I think the only drawback is that, because of the open indoor grilling, the entire restaurant is smoky. My eyes were tearing by the end of the meal, and everything on my smelled for days. Other than that, I thought it was great!

Great Food, Great Service
The food was delicious and the service was great, but it was too loud in the restaurant. The decor and seating was poorly done. Definitely not a place for a romantic dinner, more like a spot for a couple of friends to have a few drinks, while nibbling on good small bites of food.
5/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Don't go expecting a typical sushi restaurant as it's definitely more of the traditional Japanese "pub" food. The sushi is good but they're known for their bbq items. It makes more sense to order family style because when you order individually, things come out at different times and you must remember exactly what you ordered as the servers don't always remember. And you order many items in order to get enough to eat as each item is small. Therefore, it's pricey. The bbq items were good as was the sushi. Don't need to go back, though.

Worth the visit.
Pork belly and pheasant sausage very good! Overall, it was super tasty.

1 of the Best Japanese Restaurants!
Excellent food and service!!! I give Kushi my highest recommendation for anyone looking for a taste of Japan.

Tapas meets the wok
This is a very unique "small plate" experience. I sat at the bar, which allows you a full access view of the cooking area. I watched several dishes being made and picked up a few cooking tips. Great sake selection. I highly recommend topping the night off with the honey banana for desert.

I visited Kushi for 1st time on June 15th. The experience was so good that I came back on June 18th!
6/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
Food here is always good, but, the BEST part about this dinner was that my company paid for it! Kushi can be a bit pricey - compared to other Izakaya places in Annandale. Food is always good but dinner for 4 people ran about $100 per person - that's expensive by anyone's standard.

Great casual date night!
My boyfriends and I went with recently, and while the sushi wasn't spectacular, nor the offerings in that department very comprehensive, what we had was solid. Also, as we had heard, the skewers and grill items were excellent. Plus our server was very friendly and I liked the vibe a lot. The music was too loud (though good music!) even after we asked to have it turned down. I would say that was the only big drawback of a great chill date night.
6/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and service
While the lunch menu is limited, it's very good. I really recommend the pheasant sausage. The service also was great. I regret not trying th sushi, but I will next time.

Get to try a lot of dishes
This is a great place to try a lot of dishes and share with friends. Good saki too.

I love the food here and the shared style of eating. I'm glad they have the Salmon Jaw on the menu - delish! Service was great!

Don't miss Kushi for lunch!
It is really quiet and there are great deals to be had! It is a hidden gem for lunch!

Yummy food, but uncomfortable
I've been to Kushi multiple times and have always loves their food. This time was no different, the food was yummy and the service good, however, it was unbearably hot in the restaurant. On a hot, humid, DC day, the temperature outside the restaurant was the same as inside. I imagine this is because of the open kitchen, which must add a significant amount of heat, but it made for an incredibly uncomfortable dining experience. I think I will stick to going to Kushi during the cooler months of the year.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
great service, really professional and respectful along with informative . cool paintings and layout

I loved Kushi. we went there for a birthday Dinner. Sat at the private booth in the middle of the restaurant. We were able to view the grill/sushi/kitchen area and it was fabulous. highly recommend for dinner--great vibe, lots to see, great/attentive service and great food.

Sushi and Sake!
Kushi has a good selection of Sakes and the sushi is pretty good as well. The menu is different than what I am used to, but I asked for what I wanted and the server made the changes promptly and with out a fuzz. It is something I really appreciate when a restaurant gives me what I want. The menu offers other options for your non-sushi or fish friends. Overall I was really happy with Kushi and would definitely visit again.

great food/service, a little pricey
Wonderful Service And Awesome Food But Be Ready To Pay Around $50 A Person.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very happy with this place. The sushi is reasonably priced and tastes excellent. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. The Japanese ribs are excellent, too.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is always great when we come here. Service was could have been better. But when coming to restaurants like kushi you don't come for the service you come for the food. The food is always excellent!
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Went here for a friend's birthday. I'm not a big fish eater, so I tend to get sushi rolls. I got the spicy tuna and California roll (I know - not real sushi) but they were good and I appreciated the freshly grated wasabi and ginger (not dyed pink - yay!).
My friends tried much more adventurous dishes and while they felt they were tasty, they didn't find a significant difference in taste between this and a cheaper restaurant.
Nice to try, but probably wouldn't go back again - mainly due to high prices.

Excellent sashimi, soups, salads - my Japanese friends were very impressed!

Sunday not a good day
They run out of saki. But very inexpensive oysters helped.
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
I've been there few times and I really liked the food the service. Nice and friendly staff. first time I had to wait for about an hour for walk-in table but for my next visits, I've reserved my table in advance and every thing was great. I recently figured out that one of the rooms wall is painted by Kelly Towles, famous local graffiti artist. It's very nice and cool design on the wall and lights.

Many variations on Japanese food
Kushi has good sushi and sashimi. And it has plenty of choices for people who do not like "cold, dead fish." It even has quite a respectable steak for people who had to be dragged there kicking and screaming. Two different grills. Terrific, personalized service.
There are lots of different sakes, the grape wine list is very limited and could stand a good deal of improvement.
