From my perspective - best
From my perspective - best Indian restaurant in DC.
Authentic yet creative food.
Nice, casual atmosphere.
And the fact that the owner has just this one restaurant, and not a chain of them( and always seems to be present and attentive) -- adds a level of personal service and quality not generally seen.

Great food, best local Indian place
The food is consistently good, nice atmosphere, decent service, great location

excellent Indian food
The food is great, the room is attractive, the crowd is mixed and low-key, and the prices are reasonable. A relief after so many contrived menus that disappoint. If I lived closer I would be a regular. As it is, we eat here whenever we're in the Washington metro area.

Masala Art has mastered the Indian spice sauces. Meals here have never been disappointing. The dish with lamb and beets has a wonderful flavor and just the right amount of spice. The eggplant and peppers side dish is a perfect accompaniment.

Masala Art continues to be
Masala Art continues to be the best value for the best Indian food. My most recent dinner was possibly the best of many fine meals that I have had there. Too bad I can't rent a room upstairs, I'd eat there all the time.

Our default "Let's eat out" spot
Masala Art's combo of
location: Tenley/AU - within a 15 minute drive, easy parking, pleasant neighborhood
core cuisine and execution of that cuisine: A creative and refined take on the Indian Subcontinent - usually superbly executed
...it is now our default choice whenever we choose to eat out, be it for a special occasion or just laziness.
I've reviewed, in raves, Masala Art before - this trip they were a bit overwhelmed by a large Father's Day crowd. we had to wait 20 min post our reservation, and the apetizer was a tad underdone, but all was forgotten in deep satisfaction at the end of the meal and it remains our default "hey let's eat out" place

Better than ever ...
Our dinner of Bhelpuri, Chicken Tikka, Tawa Rockfish, Tandoor Roasted Eggplant, and (of course!) Rock Salt Nan was absolutely splendid. And Masala Art makes the best extra dry vodka martini on the planet. (OK -- I actually don't know that to be the case, but it is the best I've had since moving to the DC area some 30 years ago.)

Calm setting, vibrant food!
Our family enjoys Indian dishes, but our nearby places, while serving tasty food, are sadly lacking in ambience. The service was attentive but not intrusive. The "art" here varies widely, from sculpture to collage and more. It's distinctly Indian in feel, but you won't find a travel poster here. Based on an online review, we ordered the rock-salt/cilantro nan and loved it. The four entrees (two vegetarian, one chicken, one meatballs) varied in their heat content, but all were fragrant and delicious in their spiciness. While I enjoy spices, too much "fire" is not my favorite, but these were moderate enough for me to enjoy, but hot enough for everyone else. We will be back--soon, I hope!

Excellent food, reasonably priced wine list, friendly staff, easy parking near by.
What more can you ask for...

I have received consistently good service and food when dining at this restaurant. I appreciate the selection of wines and vegetarian options here as well...dishes that are not always the mainstream selections for Indian Restaurants.

A neighborhood Gem
Once again, Marsala Art lived up to expectations. We have eaten there many times as this is a local restaurant for us and we love good Indian food. This time we took our friends and were as usual greeted by both the waiter and the manager as we entered. The ambiance was great as the restaurant was nearly full and full of warm conversations and great aromas. The service was warm, friendly and courteous as always and we all enjoyed the terrific food. In all, a great evening which all agreed had to be repeated.

Delicious Indian food
We strongly recommend this Indian restaurant: the food is tasty, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is convivial. You can book your table and you will not be disappointed.

Consistently Good Vegetarian
Our first visit to Masala Art after a six-month absence revealed not much at the restaurant has changed. Vegetarian options, in particular, are consistently well-prepared and vigorously seasoned. Breads are excellent as well. Both the service and ambience are better than what one would expect given the moderate price points.

Excellent Indian Food in DC
Each dish was top-notch. Clean food and delicious. Also, offered many gluten free options, which are just the regular Indian dishes that are made without gluten ingredients. This was much appreciated. We all loved our meal.
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
We live a few blocks from Masala Art and have come here frequently. THe food on occasion was a bit too spicy for me, but always delicious. Our last few visits, I've found dishes that are in my comfort zone though. The staff is extremely polite and efficient and the atmosphere comfortable with a nice blend of traditional India and contemporary design.

Excellent food, service; bit noisy
We had delicious food and wine and very attentive service although the restaurant was very busy. It is a little noisy, so we needed to speak with raised voices. A good time was had by all.

Excellent Indian food
This restaurant was delicious and unpretentious. Excellent service- waters filled quickly, attentive but not overbearing waiter, and creative dishes. We had the broccoli and pea appetizer, the baigna bhartha, and a chickpea dish. all were great. also, sunday is half price wine bottle night, which was a nice surprise! would definitely go back. very nice atmosphere as well.

Superb Indian Food
Where in DC can you find an Indian restaurant where the food sparkles with careful attention to details and unique flavoring, where a party of four can eat for less than $100 (including tax and generous tip), where two appetizers, three order of wonderful garlic Naan, and three vegetarian main dishes are more than enough to fill up everyone, and where a real conversation is possible because the noise level is reasonable? Masala Art is that restaurant.

Always a good night out
My wife and I constantly dine at Masala Art because of the authentic Indian food and the outstanding service. The staff always remember us and are always courteous and helpful. We find the food authentic with just the right amount of spice to make you feel that you are in India. In fact, we had returned from New Delhi several months ago and thought that the food at Masal Art was not only fresher but more flavorful. Although the restaurant can become a little loud when filled with large groups, the decor is pleasing and the overall dining experience makes the visit worthwhile. We higly recommend this restaurant to all of our friends who are looking for good Indian food.

Wonderful Indian flavors
Never disappoints--well spiced and fragrant but not hot...as opposed to many Indian restaurants, everything tastes different with delicacy of flavors that leave you enjoying each mouthful from the first to the last.
Attentive staff who describe dishes and see to your needs.

2 notches above most Indian places
This was my first time at Masala Art, and I had no expectations besides going to an Indian restaurant. Don't get me wrong -- I love Indian food, but most Indian restaurants are interchangeable. Not this one -- the corn cakes (Til aur Saunf wale Makai Kabab); lamb kebab appetizer (Seekh Kabab); "chicken 65" appetizer, tandoori lamb with red chili and spices (Boti Angaara) and chickpea curry (Pindi Chole) were all fresh, vibrant and flavorful. Great chutneys, great "rock salt and cilantro" naan. This place is a winner -- not your run-of-the-mill Indian restaurant. We'll be back!!

Fabulous Lunch Buffet
I had previously enjoyed dinners at Masala Art, but expected the brunch buffet to be standard fare like those at other Indian restaurants. Wrong. Masala Art makes several of it superb dishes available for the lunch buffet, at a very reasonable price of $9.95 including Naan. The vegetarian dishes were wonderful, as was the lamb and chicken. Save some room for the rice pudding, if it is available. Service was attentive. There is a pleasant calm in the restaurant.

Best Indian in Tenleytown
I really enjoyed my first visit to Masala Art. The appetizers were unique and excellent. They have the best curries that I have had. The lamb, beat, curry was outstanding. I would definitely go back to try some of the other dishes.

Better than Ever!
We're Masala Art regulars for a reason: terrific food & service. Especially recommend the chicken tikka & bhelpuri appetizers, the adraki lamb chops, and the rock salt nan. And they make a fabulous vodka martini!

Best Indian Restaurant in DC
Hands down, it's the best Indian restaurant in DC. I'm Indian-American, and grew up eating delicious Indian food, so I have a very discriminating taste when it comes to Indian food. I can say without a doubt that Masala Art is the best. This is the restaurant that we frequent the most - and fortunately, it's only a couple of blocks from our house.
The food is very flavorful and authentic. They also serve rather new, innovative dishes. We regularly get the Aloo Tikki (appetizer), Murgh Makhani, Jumbo Prawns, Zucchini Jalfrezi, and Lamb Vindaloo. All are excellent. The buffet is also a good deal.

It never disappoints
Masala Art is too good to be just a neighborhood gem, but I hope it doesn't become a destination. Leave it for us! The only drawbacks are because of its small size: tables too close together and a bit too loud. But for food and service, imaginative and friendly, it can't be beat.

GREAT Neighborhood find
Atmosphere very warm and cozy. We were a group of 8 women for a birthday dinner. While the service at first was very slow getting our drinks - from then on - the food, service, attention -- al top notch. The food is some of the best Indian we have ever had - and even though everyone in our group has lived in Cleveland Park for 15-20 years, only 1 of us had been to Masala Art.That has changed and we will be back. If spicy is your thing - you will get it and then some - if mild is what you like, they will make your dish very mild. The naans are increidible - rock salt, garlic, butter... everything from appetizers to dessert was amazing. dont drive past unless just to show your friends where to have dinner.

Remains Fine Value
Masala Art was bustling the night before Thanksgiving. Apparently we were not alone in desiring fare that would contrast with that to be offered the following day. The restaurant was hitting on all cylinders that night -- our dishes, all of which were vegetarian, were consistently well prepared, as well as offering a nice mix of textures and seasoning. Prices are those of a neighborhood restaurant by the ambience and service are a cut above. This remains one of the best restaurant values for the money in DC.

Indian food at its best
I've eaten at Masala Art several times and have always enjoyed it. There are several things on the menu that you don't often see on other Indian menus. The tables are nicely spaced, the service attentive but not overbearing, and the food is reasonably priced. The ingredients are fresh and the results delicious.
