Grear Japanese environment.
Grear Japanese environment. Fresh food and reasonable price. Great for a dinner with family or friends. Super calm environment.

For Japanese food, Nippon
For Japanese food, Nippon is just excellent. We live in South Florida, where there are very few top rated Japanese restaurants. When in NY, Nippon is a must for us. The food has been consistently wonderful forever. The service is always very good. They appreciate their customers and the service shows it. My wife and I have had many of the items on their menu and nothing ever disappoints.

Had sukiaki for the second
Had sukiaki for the second time, cooked at our table, and their soba salad. It was all delicious. The waitress who prepared the food was very pleasant. We will certainly go back in the near future.

A true Japanese restaurant--cooking
A true Japanese restaurant--cooking at your table option was fantastic--sushi was above average--though our waitress was Egyptian, the service was exceptional

A classic that's still classic
they make their own tofu and buckwheat soba noodles--both are excellent. Plus the sushi is always first rate.

Really poor service. Water
Really poor service. Water glasses were never refilled. Inattentive waiter throughout the meal. I will not return and I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

The oldest and still great
A wonderful throw back in time. This is truly classic Japanese. The food is wonderful, but the prices get very high very quickly. To save money, I tend to order muliple appetizers or small plates. The tofu and the buckwheat soda noodles are excellent.

All about the authentic food
Just walking in here, did not amaze me, but reading Yelp reviews, it looked really good. And indeed, the food is amazing and given my table was one of two non-Japanese customer tables, it did convince me that this indeed must a a true authentic Japanse restaurant.
The service was friendly, but could have been a little bit more alert/ attentive (tea refills etc).

The best 'classic' Japanese in NYC
Restaurant Nippon, now celebrating its 50th(!) anniversary, was the first serious Japanese restaurant in New York, and remains at the top of the heap when it comes to traditional kaiseki dining. Although the sushi is excellent, this is one of only two places in New York where you can experience a true, classical Japanese dinner (the other, almost as good, is Restaurant Hakubai in the basement of the Kitano Hotel). Among other special touchs at Nippon, look for the amazing soba (grown on their own soba farm) and the fresh-grated wasabi (I can't think of another place that offers this.)

An authentic Japanese experience
One of the oldest, and still one of the best. This is far more than just a sushi/sashimi restaurant. The home made tofu and buckweat soba noodles are highlights. [Note service can be slow unless the wait staff is reminded that the diners need to out more quickly than normal.]

Restaurant Nippon is a Japanese restaurant for all occasions. The food is superb, especially the sukiyaki.
I would rank Restaurant Nippon the #1 Japanese Restaurant in Manhattan for the general Japanese food category.
This is a gem and I wish I knew this restaurant long time ago, as I go to Manhattan to have fun for over 30 years.
Thank you Open Table! In any case, Restaurant Nippon is a must visit if you like Japanese food accompany by good service.
I will go back again soon.

Best Sushi Outside of Japan
Nippon has a reputation as a tried-and-true Japanese restaurant in NYC. I was not disappointed. I had wonderful service and delicious food - perhaps the best miso soup I've had outside Japan. The fish was fresh and well presented. My waiter was observant but not overbearing and my experience was altogether very delightful.

Very Good Sukiyaki
It is rare to find a Japanese restaurant in NYC that serves good sukiyaki. This one excels at it. In fact it's their signature dish. There is also a full list of Japanese appetizers and sushi and a fair selection of main dishes. We think it's always better to have the sukiyaki cooked at your table which they will do for $2 more.

This is good
This is good food at its best. Great sushi. Will be back.

The real thing
This was the first sushi shop in NYC many decades ago. The food is very good, the decor a little dated, but it is authentic. Good sushi, Japanese food isn't cheap and this is the same.

I had the beef sukiyaki and it was fantastic. I highly recommend the cook at the table option.

It's quiet for lunch; and happening for dinner but cozy at the same time.
The food quality is unbeatable ~

This is a great resturant. The food here is the best Japanese food I have ever had in New York.

Our families favorite japanese
Our families favorite japanese restaurant between New York City and Albany. We're sorry we no longer live close enough to go there more often.

Authentic Japanese Cuisine
Hard to find these days...I felt like I was in Japan for a few hours. Loved it.

A Restaurant to Remember
We live in South Florida, a desert if you like Japanese food. We used to live in NY and come back at least once a year. Every time, we make sure to have dinner at Nippon. The food is authentic and delicious, the service is wonderful. What more could you ask for? It can be pricey - depending on what you order. But well worth it.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of the oldest, still one of the bets. The buckwheat noodles and homemade silky tofu are treats. The fish is also first rate. Note, quite easy to build up a sizeable bill, stick to the specials if budget is a concern.

The interior of the restaurant
The interior of the restaurant is what you would expect to find in a more traditional Japanese sushi restaurant, which makes it seem more authentic. The sushi was fantastic - not chewy at all.

Great little restaurant.
Not Nobu, but a great place to get very good sushi and very good service.
