Food service was excellent
Food service was excellent as was the food quality and inventiveness. I am a novice in the fine food/wine category and although the wine was also good, I did not know what kind of questions to ask and the sommelier didn't offer any details on the choice of pairings other than the name of the wine and where it was from. Would've been nice to receive some unsolicited details such as reason for that pairing, flavors, etc.

An epicurious weekend in Chicago
We flew to Chicago for a long weekend and our main goal was good food. We were excited to try "molecular gastronomy" at Moto after researching all the best places to eat. Without getting into specifics on each course the overall presentation and variety of courses was very nice. Presentation was everything from elaborate serving apparatus and exquisite table service. The actual food itself was not as good as I expected. There wasn't one thing we had that we said "we have to have that again." Usually when we do a tasting menu (like the next night when we went to Everest) we comment on the merits of each course and wonder how it was prepared and wish we could make it at home. It didn't happen here. It was interesting and worth trying.

One of the greatest dining
One of the greatest dining experiences I've had. Four hours long, delicious food, and the presentations were just stunning. Probably not for everyone but if the web site intrigues you it's an amazing, unique experience.

High end dinner experience
Incredible dining experience. Wonderful wait staff. Very attentive. Worth the expensive price. Awesome each course presentation.

GREAT MEAL!!! absolutely no
GREAT MEAL!!! absolutely no complaints on the food...and would definitely come back. presentation was awesome as well. Other thoughts...1) reservation was accidentally cancelled due to having the same first and last name reserved at the same time 2) waiter stated that English breakfast was one of the tea options which I ordered (needed caffeine) however a different tea was poured. He stated that they didnt have that tea available however confused why he would have given me that option in the first place. I didn't feel like he took responsibility for bringing the wrong beverage. good tea either way. 3) There was also an accent barrier and hard to comprehend during meal descriptions

Will go again
My dad and i went to moto to celebrate my last night in Chicago, and moto definitely matched up to our expectations. The services was great and so was the food, will go again.

An experience one should try once
Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Moto. That said, is it worth the price of entry? IMO, no. The food was very good overall. Some dishes were fabulous (all desserts, lamb 3-ways), others just average (cherry smoked fish). I knew what I was getting into before making the reservation. Perhaps my expectations were still a bit too high. We sat in the basement, and there were 4 parties with 14 people total. The acoustics were horrible with 4 hard walls and no soft fabrics to absorb. So the noise level rapidly increased. Upstairs was definitely quieter as we left despite the place being almost full. But I have to say that the service was extremely attentive, and the servers were very polite.
5/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
My girlfriend and I went to Moto to celebrate our 2 years of dating. The service was better than what you see in movies. The food was amazing. The food was constantly changing, nothing was similar or the same taste repeating. It was contrasting and extremely imaginative, and fun. It made for a great memory and a lot of fun.
5/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
This was an awesome and unique experience. My husband and I found Moto to be both innovative and extremely tasty. Our favorite course was the breakfast, totally amazing!!! Everything was a surprise. And the service... wonderful!!! Would love to come back in our next trip.

This was quite an exquisite
This was quite an exquisite culinary experience. It is really expensive but once in a lifetime thing to do if you are a foodie. I was full after 5 servings but continued on eating since every plate is spectaculary presented
We will recommand it for sure to our friends who have the open mind you need to go there
5/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Visit to Moto was highlight of our trip to Chicago. Can't recommend it enough - food, service and customer care are top notch. We went with wine pairings, which were spot on.

Amazing dining experience
The 11-course dinner was beautifully presented and the food was excellent. The chef called in advance to ask about dietary restrictions, and I was accommodated with food that was just as good as a meat course. It took about 3 hours so we did not feel rushed or stuffed!

A WOW Experience!
We had the tasting menu with the accompanying wine progression. Everything was flavorful and well presented. The ones that stood out even more were the goat tastings (the braised shoulder left an aftertaste of coriander). The garlic and onion ice cream was a very pleasant surprise. The lamb belly was awesome! The cheddar in the cheese course was outstanding. The triple creme - not enough creme with the pastry. I'm not a wine expert but I enjoyed the reisling, the Demi sec and the Madeira. The service was excellent. Alanna was very approachable and encouraged us to offer our opinions on the food. She didn't mind repeating descriptions. We left the restaurant feeling that we had just had a really great experience and not just a meal.

Amazing dining experience!
The whole experience was fantastic! From the time I made the reservation online, I received a call within a few minutes from the restaurant to confirm, ask about any food allergies/preferences, any celebration, anything that could enhance our experience. When we walked in we were greeted by name and sat immediately. Service was impeccable. There was 11+ courses/ experiences. All were amazing! We were there for about three hours. Just a great evening!
5/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything I expected and more!
Amazing food and service. It's at the intersection of fine dining and art. Everything I had read about and saw on TV travel shows is true, except one of the TV shows had mentioned something about edible menus which was not there (perhaps it keeps changing?). Well worth it for a special occasion.

molecular cooking at its best
A perfect gem in a surprising setting. We arrived early and were immediately seated. The meal was the Chef's Tasting menu which was an wonderful eclectic mixture of tastes, textures, and odors with whimsical delights thrown in. The wine pairings were surprising, elegant, and perfect. I would suggest rather than ordering wine select the wine pairings. Service was impecable and thoughtful. The wait staff was excellent. Moto called to confirm dietary needs of guests and made reasonable (above the call of duty actually) accomodations, considering that this is a Chef's tasting menu. I left very impressed, and I look forward to returning in the future.

Deserves more stars
This was my 3rd dining experience at Moto and some how they continue to improve on what I thought was an impeccable experience from the start. The food is whimsical, creative and delicious. Between 3 visits in <11months there was only a single course repeated. The only aspect of the experience that bested the food was the service. Attentive without being intrusive, they struck the perfect balance. Miranda Elliot is a gem able to pair a world of wines with complex dishes layered with favors! We were graced with a kitchen tour, a true honor in our book. Brava!

This is great fun if you are a person who, loves Food. Innovative menu highest quality ingredients. Fun presentations Staff is attentive and knowledegeable. The cost makes it a special occasion restaurant. I recommend you make one up and go there.

Moto has become our go to venue for special occasions. After having one of the best and most memorable dining experiences for my birthday, my wife and I dined at Moto this weekend to celebrate hers. We were pampered from start-to-finish and dish after dish was amazing. Such a fun meal; extremely interesting, whimsical food that is beautifully plated and tastes as great as it looks. Some of the best wine pairings we have had and what really makes Moto worthy of a special occasion is the staff; first rate personnel that is among the best in the industry (personable, attentive, professional). Moto has been noticeably better each time we have dined here and we look forward to many more meals! Definitely a must for anybody serious about food.
6/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
one of the best meals ever!
food, service, presentation is beyond reproach or words. outstanding!!
6/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
food and presentation was exceptional. Service was very attentive. Acoustics in restaurant made it loud and difficult to have quiet dinner conversations when tables filled up..

Proof that Persnickety is Good!
I don't think I've ever visited a place that has taken such joy in creating a variety of small tastes. The attention to detail was impressive throughout - especially when it came to serving small tastes of lamb, carrot, and asparagus on tines. Most amusing dish for me was the tasting of cheeses on an indoor "picnic plate" of wheatgrass.
Would I go back? Yes, when there is a new menu. Part of the experience is trying new items and enjoying the pageantry of service. And having both is critical for a night's fun through food. I must add a note of great appreciation for an excellent staff, the balanced the quiet of formal service with a note of fun and friendliness to help guarantee a quality experience for all.
6/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
I won't pretend that I loved every part of every course in the 14+ course menu, but I loved enough of it to want to spent a small fortune again the next time I am in Chicago. The presentation of the courses was fantastic and original; the mix of flavors, colors, and textures was amazing; the staff were perfect in their delivery. Each course was a delightful surprise. I just wish that the menu they gave us to keep at the end had a description of each course with its ingredients rather than just the name. Then my wife wouldn't have had to spend over two hours reviewing our photos trying to remember what the main ingredients were.
One of the top three dining experiences of my life, and probably the most expensive, but worth every penny.
6/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
I dined alone. I never felt uncomfortable or out of place. Each course and wine pairing were placed so that I did not have down time. It was a great foodie experience. I was also treated to a tour of the kitchen. Wow!
6/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
If you ever took chemistry you must try this place. I've read a lot about this restaurant and always wanted to try it. Finally had the chance when my old college roommate came into town. We wanted something different and Moto did not disappoint. 12 course meal. Service that went beyond knowledgeable and nice. Courses that were not just pleasing to the eye but amazing in the flavors. If you take the time to taste and savor the food, you will be amazed. I've read criticisms that people are still hungry after a meal here. I was in a group of 4, and I'm over 250 lb and after 12 courses, I was satiated. If you are a Foody this is a must for the education of your palate.

Food Lover's First Time Foods
Wow. What can we say. Looked forward to this for a long time. Were not disappointed. From our Table Captain, Alana, to everyone in the kitchen, including Richie, Claire and all the staff the experience was unforgettable. Most exciting for us was our first time having goat, sweet bread and duck tongue. Presentations of each of the 12 courses was off the chart. It was part of the total dining experience. Not to be missed. After we were given a tour of the kitchen and a memorable pic with the kitchen staff. It will be framed and prominently displayed for all to see. Be sure and take pics of each course. You will want to show to family and friends as they won't believe what you ate and how it was presented. Thank you Moto!

I took my boyfriend to Moto
I took my boyfriend to Moto to celebrate his birthday. Everyone wished him a happy birthday which goes to show that there is excellent communication in the restaurant. The food was to die for. Everything was plated so beautifully you almost didn't want to touch them, but of course I had to stop myself from licking the plates clean. I loved every minute of this evening. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better experience. We will definitely be back!
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Amazing food, amazing service
This was our fourth time at Moto - it feels like a fun version of Alinea without the high church ambiance - we would highly recommend - its great fun!
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
But beware that
But beware that if they do not have enough reservations, they might sit you in the basement instead of opening the main dining room. When you spend more than $250 per person, it should not be happening.

Food to Remember
I have had Moto on my mind since I first saw them on the No Reservations Episode over 4 years ago. To finally have the chance to dine here was something very exciting for me. I was excited and nervous for each course. Never knowing what to expect. I enjoyed the many fish courses to start off with, especially the smoked sturgeon. The mahi mahi umami plate might have been the best thing I've ever eaten (which is saying a lot because I detest mushrooms). The food was amazing. Slightly disappointed with service. The servers either spoke too quickly about the dishes or skipped certain part of the explanation due to either forgetting or just not knowing. Overall, It was an amazing experience. Thanks to BOH for allowing me to see the kitchen.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
While travelling to Chicago wanted to try something new. We had tickets to Alinea as well and were looking for similar restaurants. The ambiance and service were excellent, very intimate, quiet and modern. The food was excellent, each course (there were 11) was a surprise and tasted better than the last. The staff are very helpful and take into consideration dietary restrictions, allergies etc. It was a four hour meal. And very, very expensive. Wine pairing. Prix Fix. Surprisingly didn't leave us stuffed beyond comfort. The different tastes and presentations were really creative and it was a complete sensory experience. Definitely worth it, once in a lifetime/year/trip if you are a "foodie".

Best experience ever!!!
Is a complete new experince. Really good, best restaurant, best service, best food
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
As usual, fantastic
12 courses. Presentations were clever without being too contrived. Only one slight miss in that department, Service was spot on. The food ranged from very good to superlative. Wine pairings worked well, with a couple of genuinely interesting choices that were a bit unconventional. A chef and a restaurant that Chicago is fortunate to have.
7/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
great presentation; food as art. Seems to be a copy of Alinea but does not have the explosive taste of Alinea. Worth it for the performance.
8/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
No restaurant will ever compare!
Came here with my dad for my birthday and as a person who has been to every delicious, fancy restaurant in Chicago, this was hands down the best food and experience I have ever had at a restaurant! The service was amazing and able to, in details, tell us and answer our questions about each of the 13 different courses we had. Will recommend and love to come back again!
Also, the staff were so nice out waitress gave us a tour of the rest of the restaurant, the Kitchen, and even their herb garden growing room! :]
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
The highlight of our trip
Service was impeccable from the moment we arrived. The wine pairings worked very well with the menu. We loved the creativity and playfulness of the plates, although flavour wise, there were a couple that fell a little short. The most memorable dish of the night was their play on surf and turf- absolutely delicious. Moto is definitely a special treat if you're visiting Chicago.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Moto one of the best in Chicago
I'ts always a nice surprise to come back to Moto, I love this place and to me Homaro Cantu's kitchen delivers a better dining experience that the pricier Alinea, that's supposed to be the best restaurant in the U.S. This is my fouth time in Moto and it does not cease to amaze at the creative cuisine and the inventive wine pairings.

10 out of 5 stars
I am sorry that we could only give the restaurant 5 stars. It really deserves 10 stars. My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary. This was far and away the most tremendous eating experience of our lives. Every tasting course was truly an experience and each course built on the previous course. I highly recommend the wine pairing. I did not recognize most of the wines on the list. However, for an average wine drinker, the tastes were so clearly matched with each course that even I could appreciate it. Be prepared to push the limits of what you think you will like and take pictures of every course since they are so visually appealing. Although expensive, the price was worth it for a once in a lifetime experience.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you are looking for a culinary treat, this is the place to go. We were impressed with the creativity and thought that went into the menu, as well as the taste. The staff is meticulous in their service. They were prompt, attentive, yet did not intrude. The experience was well worth the price tag.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary with a much anticipated visit to Moto. The experience, from start to finish, lived up to our high expectations. Service: The primarily two-person team serving us were attentive, detailed, and precise. Food: Over a period of four+ hours and 15?? (we lost count) courses, there were no disappointing servings. River, Breakfast, and the several desserts were amongst our favorites!! The wine progression paired perfectly with each course. Atmosphere: There is an open seating area towards the back of the restaurant. However, my wife and I were fortunate to be seated in one of a couple oversized, ultra-comfortable booths. All together, the experience was perfect for our celebration.

Better than Good, but not Fantastic
Meal was very good, but portions seemed smaller than other restaurants with similar many-course tasting menus. We were happy with our meal and the service, but would probably try somewhere else new next time.
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
interesting and sensual dining
we had another lovely dinner at MOTO...we've eaten there 3 times and each time is different...the approach to the dining experience is creative and artistic without being pyrotechnic for its own sake...a very special dining experience.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Pricey for the amount of food
Service was outstanding. Wine pairing was very good and well chosen.
Few courses were OK, few courses were outstanding and the last course "Baking 101" was just uneatable. When you pay that much for a meal, you expect everything to be perfect. I would rather prefer less courses perfectly executed with more food in it. The meats and protein were so good… I would double or triple the portion for sure ;) There was too many desserts courses for my taste (4 out of 13 were desserts)
I was glad to try it but I don't think I will return. Overall, I found chefs works very hard on presentation and gadget but at the end, the taste and the produce should be outstanding and the star of the meal… It lacks at that point.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been to great restaurants with tasting menus and same concept. Moro by far has been the MOST. EXPENSIVE. We were 2, had testing menu and a glass of wine and we payed $480.00. Won't deny the creativity and taste of the dishes but way too OVERPRICED
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The most surprisingly creative and delightfully beautiful presentations we've seen, even in two star restaurants. Stand-outs were the spice "road" , the corn chowder "bridge" and the octopus dish.. We did not do the wine pairings and in retrospect I wish we had. Foodies will relish the evening. Arrive rested and hungry! Superb for a special occasion!
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Expected something a little
Expected something a little different. There was not a lot of over complicated techniques or over the top stuff. The food was just good solid fine dining food. It was fun, playful and very tasty. Service was good and very attentive. I will be back for sure!!!
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Unique sensory experience
Moto is a unique sensory experience. Each of the 11 tasting courses was a still life: plating was creative and unusual (one was a wall magnet commonly used for knives, here with tiny magnetic appetizer forks of luscious palate-pleasers; a wooden box that opened to clams, mussels and lobster on aromatic sea greens; another, a terrarium-like container of growing sprouts, clipped table-side for the perfect fresh green highlight to bison tartare). Flavors were varied, rich and sometimes startling. Accompanying wines were an exercise in indulgence. The staff was warm, informative, and down-to-earth -- no stuffy, elitism here. And a tour of the kitchen, post-dinner, led to delightful conversations with charming, interesting chefs.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
It was AMAZING!! Super special place. Food, wine, and service was perfect!!
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
An experience, period
I had the 14 courses with the wine progression. The wine selection was from the top I tried in my life. 11 carefully selected and paired wines. The food? Come with an open mind and don't come to hungry. Service is slow but not bad, is just that every course is small and almost a piece of art. Come ready for a flavor eclectic experience. I will definitely come back.
Every body complains about the price... Well 95 usd for 11 pre selected half glasses of wine. You usually pay from 10 to 14 usd for full glasses. This is the equivalent to 6 or 7 glasses. Is not totally out of market price. every course is carefully crafted so it totally pays off.

Clever food with phenomenal service
I came from New York specifically to dine at Moto, and was both amazed and disappointed. The food, the ambience, and particularly the service were all among the best I've experienced. Yet, the wild creativity that I had heard so much about was somewhat lacking. There were a few incredibly clever presentations, but nothing compared with the dishes on the website and video.
Again, the service was absolutely amazing. Beyond anything I've experienced.
