A neighborhood gem
The quintessential neighborhood trattoria -- wonderful food, plenty of wine, quiet attentive service, comfortable as old shoes. Small family birthday at adjoining table, young couple holding hands, the gentleman reading Tolstoy over his solitary supper, two bearded ones deep in discussion after a toast to the new pope, and our table of four old friends planning a trip to London and Venice -- typical Noe Valley enjoying dinner out on a midweek evening. Every dish was perfect -- salads, fresh pasta, tender duck breast, mussels, accompanied by two bottles of smooth Valpolicella. We skipped dessert, but Tolstoy enjoyed his! Warm ending over expresso. Highly recommended -- perfect for a relaxed date night.

A great find in wolf's clothing
Had passed by Lupo back in November while taking a walk in Noe Valley and took note. Glad we gave it a try. Excellent saltimbocca and best fried
Polenta I have had anywhere. Intimate interior with highly attentive waiters. Definitely transported me to Rome.

Very good Roman Italian food.
Very good Roman Italian food. The unremarkable decor is more than made up for with excellent food and warm, excellent service. No fru fru pretense on the plate: the grilled radicchio with goat cheese starter was gone in seconds, the gnocchi braised in wild boar sauce was spectacular, the lamb chops in a balsamic reduction were deeply flavorful, and the veal special was tender and flavorful. Neighborhood vibe, diverse diners. $18 corkage. We will definitely be back!

Ate here for the first time
Ate here for the first time while on vacation. We were a party of six. Every single one of our order was very good. My only complaint is that the serving portions are small. Smoked mozzarella a la fungi is excellent and the fettuccine with several types of mushroom was addictive. Very authentic to No. Italian cuisine.

Eat here.....and often
Delicious Italian food in a casual setting.
The place is not fancy but the food is so fabulous you won't notice the bare tables
I have never been disappointed in one of their pasta dishes especially the homemade pastas
The only time I found it a bit noisy was when there was a table for 12 celebrating a family event.
We did my mother's 90th birthday here a few years ago - rented the entire restaurant for the evening.
The service was so friendly and attentive and caring you would have thought they were doing it for their own mother

Everything was amazing. Can't stop thinking about the white chocolate lemon torte for dessert. The lamb was cooked perfectly!

Service was great as always
Service was great as always - prompt but not rushed. Love the dining room - when it is full, it can be crowded but does not feel like you are sitting in your neighbors lap. Table favorites are always the prosciutto & pear appetizer, the beef & pork tortelloni, and the veal saltimbooca. We liked the fava been special and the asparagus risotto this time too off the specials menu.

Good, solid Italian food --
Good, solid Italian food -- consistently good. Love their pasta! Always good service, too: friendly, accommodating. I go there often; in fact, I returned the following night!

Good, consistently good Italian
Good, consistently good Italian food. I love their pasta, esp. the "con funghi" one. Great service, there but not in your face. Friendly, accommodating staff. Def. a repeat. In fact, I did repeat it -- on both Monday and Tuesday nights! Buona or -o, or -i.

Lupa is one of my favorite
Lupa is one of my favorite neighborhood standbys and even if I didn't live in Noe Valley, I'd make it a point to visit regularly. The food is always high-quality, authentic Italian, and the service is great. Reservations recommended Thurs-Sunday, or be ready for at least a short wait.

Thisnisnangrat little neighborhood
Thisnisnangrat little neighborhood restaurant. The food, especially pasta are good. They always have some interesting twists on salalds(currently artichoke and fennel). It is our go to restaurant for visitors!

Great little spot!
I was looking for a place for my husband and I to take my Dad out for his birthday. My Dad has lived in SF for about 40 years, and sometimes it seems like he has been to just about every restaurant there is in town, so figuring out a place to take him can be a challenge. I found Lupa Trattoria on Yelp and the reviews were so good, and more importantly, pretty consistent, that I decided to take a chance and book us a table. We were not disappointed. First off, the wait staff is really great. Secondly, the interior is really nice and cozy looking, which is just what I was hoping for. The wine list is a nice mix of by the glass versus by the bottle of Italian wines. And, the food was delicious. I will definitely be back.

Lupa has fast become our favorite date-night spot (with apologies to the Sodinis of North Beach and L'Petit Laurent in Glen Park). Chef Steffano Coppolla, himself from Rome, has gone for a Roman menu, with something for every taste and appetite. The staff are wonderfully attentive and understand our desire to dine a la "tapas" (sharing a variety of courses). Extremely high-quality food, extraordinarily delicious, not stupidly expensive and served in a warm, welcoming environment. I would strongly recommend Lupa to anyone looking for a marvelous evening out.

A true neighborhood gem
I live in Philadelphia but come to SF a half dozen times a year and stay in Noe Valley. Lupa is the bext restaurant on all counts in the area, and one of my favorite in the city. The staff are larger than life in the good sense--friendly, welcoming--they remind me of the waiters in Little Italy when I was growing up in NY. For value, service, and superior food, this is the place to go no matter where in SF you are.

Kid-friendly -- and romantic!
My date and I were both enamored of our fettucine with mushrooms, typically a relatively pedestrian dish, but at Lupa it was wonderful. We also enjoyed the baked halibut special (but not as much as the fettucine). Friendly, attentive service was respectful of our privacy. (We were obviously on a date.) We found Lupa to be quite romantic, just dark enough, lots of natural wood and prety fabrics. And despite the many kids at other tables, Lupa still retained a sophisticated feel. We will definitely go back, with kids and without!

Consistent and delicious!
We love Lupa. Food and service are always excellent. We know we can count on Lupa to provide an enjoyable and delicious dinner. Thank you Lupa for being our favorite neighborhood restaurant.

Great neighborhood find
Food is reminiscent of being in Italy. Very friendly staff. Enjoy!!!
5/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
With all the 'new/modern' Italian places all over the city, its nice to find a old school Italian place with great pasta! A true sign of a good Italian place to me. Service was great, the place was very busy (Friday night) but not crazy. Several tables of couples and families.

Just like eating in Nonna's kitchen
Delicious food. Unpretentious setting and service. Reasonably priced. Really good low key weeknight dinner.

Good neighborhood Italian
Our second visit - very good, just like our first visit. Good menu, good service, good food. Can be a little loud.

Awesome food and great neighborhood feel. Lamb bolognase was great.

This is a nice cosy neighborhood
This is a nice cosy neighborhood restaurant with delicious pastas and always good specials .one of our favorite places.

Can't go wrong
We were a group of 5 and each one thought the food was outstanding: Very fresh ingredients cooked to perfection. The pasta is amazing, but so was the soup, the veal, the tomatoes and mozzarella. Leave room for dessert - terrific. I rated the ambiance average because we sat near the entrance and the stairs so it was a bit uncomfortable.

Great neighborhood Italian!
Pasta with lamb ragu was amazing! Heirloom tomato salad was fresh and delicious! Great neighborhood Italian!

Still One Of My Favorites
We had not been back to Lupa's in quite sometime. But when we returned, we were pleasantly to find that the food is still excellent, the service still very personable, and the wine list still full of great choices. Lupa remains my favorite Italian Restaurant in a city full of great Italian eateries.

Noe Valley's Gem Foodie Spot
Unassumingly charming, the staff and ambiance of Lupa never fails to make you feel at home. The pastas & grilled meats are always prepared as if fresh from a Tuscan farm (home made pasta & boar ragu, rack of lamb) & the wine list boasts nice Barolos, chiati. Attentive & friendly wait staff helps as well. Definitely recommend for family & friends.

Awesome last-minute find...
Two hungry people, in the city for just one evening. Couldn't keep our reservation at a restaurant in the Castro -- no parking to be found ANYWHERE. Cancelled that reservation, and found this Noe Valley gem. Best. Lasagna. Ever. As far as I'm concerned, lasagna is the test of an Italian restaurant -- Lupa's transcended my wildest expectations. It was a generous helping of melt-in-your-mouth goodness that practically left me speechless. Started with carpaccio that was everything carpaccio is supposed to be...beautiful, paper-thin slices of beef, perfect baby arugula, and two nice rectangles of parmesan. Finished with a creme brule that was terrific...but where was the cannoli? (I was craving cannoli.)
In short; don't think...just go!

Good pasta! Other dishes,
Good pasta! Other dishes, also good. Red wines, not so good -- okay, but not great. Stay with the whites.
8/18/2013 5:00:00 PM
Looking forward to a third visit
We've been here twice, the food has been stellar both times. Although the pasta is the real draw, the halibut was cooked perfectly (nice crust, moist interior) and served with perfectly prepared sides (sauteed fresh spinach and roasted potatoes). The profiteroles we shared for dessert were amazing.

Wonderful Italian Food!
My husband and I went here on a date night and were very happy with the quality of the food. We are both big Italophiles, have good friends in Italy and have traveled there for years, so are pretty hard to impress. But this is the real deal. And the waiter (owner?) is Italian and very friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend it!
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food and service are exceptional. This is an easy place to overlook, but the locals know it and keep coming back. We love their quality and service....they have a set menu plus daily specials and they gave never disappointed.
We will be back again and again.....

Taste of Tuscany
Delicious, authentic Italian food with many good menu choices. The wait staff was knowledgeable and available. We sat at second level where there seemed to be a nicer ambiance. Casual setting without table coverings.

A birthday treat!
I made last minute reservations at Lupa Trattoria for my birthday dinner. It was our first time eating there and I would definitely go back! The lamb parpadelle was magical (I'm sure I'll be craving more for weeks!), the steak well-cooked, and the creme brulee perfectly prepared. The service was very professional, and the atmosphere in the restaurant is cozy and welcoming. A wonderful authentic Italian experience!

good service, good food
everyone said their dish was very tasty and it was a crowd pleaser for carnivores, vegetarians, the lactose intolerant and the foodie alike.

A special treat...
While Lupa's is not overly expensive we always go to celebrate an occasion. Everyday is a great day! We really like to introduce new friends to Lupa's as well. The staff always recognizes us and they are never too busy to joke or explain a certain Italian nuance. Lupa's is always busy never crowded and the smallish dining room gives a real feeling to dining La Familia.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
It appears to be just another regulate spot but the food was really fabulous!
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
I love going to Lupa! They are always so consistent in serving delicious meals time and time again. I love the duck and the raviolis are to die for. We will be back again!
10/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
Love this place
This place never disappoints. The food and service are always great, and the owner always stops by to make sure everything is perfect. We always try to fit in a meal when we are in the area.

Best in Noe Valley
I get to SF a half dozen times a year, and always eat here when I go. We were a party of 5; each of us had a different appetizer and a different entrée--all were wonderful. There is a very good Italian wine list with very reasonable prices. It is a neighborhood Italian restaurant, so you don't go for ambience. You go for good food, good service, and a good time out--it always delivers all three.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
I love this place
Waiters are amazing. They go above and beyond. Food is amazing. Ambiance is welcoming. I intend to go back many times. Would highly recommend.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
They lost me at the lasagna. I'm Italian. Everything was wonderful up to that point. Flavorful and complex. But the lasagna was something I'd expect in a cafeteria. Maybe it was just a bad night for it, but if not for that it would have been 5 stars across the board.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Silly name..., but great food
I've walked by this place many times, but somehow the name just did not call out to me. Finally, did have dinner here & was so pleasantly surprised. Wonderful atmosphere, nice lighting, not too loud, great lasagna. Can't wait to go back and try other items...

We Love Lupa!
My family has been going to Lupa for years, and it's consistently great. It's a terrific little neighborhood spot with delicious food, great service, and a nice ambience. They don't try too hard to be trendy and they don't need to - they just deliver excellent quality each and every time. The lasagna is ridiculously good (traditional red meat sauce, not bechamel based). Go expecting a sweet neighborhood vibe and a cozy atmosphere. You won't be disappointed.
