We hadn't been to the CS for a while. There have been some small changes. No more jean pocket silverware holders. The food was very tasty and nicely presented. The wine list has a range of options. The service very personable and professional. It ain't cheep but a nice fine dining option in Evanston.

Everything about the evening
Everything about the evening was outstanding, starting with the decor of the restaurant. Our reservation was right on time, the staff was friendly, the service was impeccable, and the food delicious. The special was monk fish in a lobster sauce with vegetables, which was excellent. Someone else had the meatloaf, an old stand-by that's always good. And two people had the arctic char, which they enjoyed. The soup was a cream of ramps, which got an A+. It was such a nice dining experience that I've already emailed a couple of friends about it. And oh yes! there's free parking a block and a half away!

Chet's Station has the most reliable top quality food on the North Shore now that Carlos has closed. I had the Betsy foie gras this side of France. Also the soft shelled crabs were lightly breaded and perfect. Who ever had a rhubarb soufflé before? Wonderful.

An intimate setting
This is definitely a place to go for good food and service. If you want to enjoy a conversation, the ability to talk in a normal tone and volume was particularly refreshing.
5/24/2013 4:00:00 PM
Love the Ambience
At the risk of sounding like an old fogie, it's refreshing to find a restaurant where you can converse at a normal decibel. I never understood why having to yell at your dinner partner means trendy. Restaurants have to compete at many different levels, and Chef's Station meets all the tests, but here's a novelty...I don't believe I've seen a male, professional wait staff since Berghoff's.
5/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
Quiet & Lovely
Very different spot for a restaurant. The waitstaff was professional. The noise level was amazing - so quiet you could have a normal level conversation, but didn't feel like everyone was listening. Perfect. Only downside was not a good spot to have a pre or post dinner drink - not much of a bar. Food was great.

Very Satisfied Diner
Chef's Station achieves the perfect balance between quality of food (which is very good), ambiance and price. It has a unique setting which adds to the atmosphere. It is the only restaurant where my son and I have dined more than once when I visit him from out of town. I look forward to bringing my wife here when we both make the trip in the near future.

Love this restaurant!
Every time we have been here, everything has been wonderful. The food is always amazing, the service attentive, and the ambiance is lovely. You can talk with your dining companions because it is never too noisy. I'm sure the wine list is great, but I don't really drink it so can't comment too knowledgeably. We would recommend this place unconditionally.

A winner every time!
I absolutely love this restaurant - very peaceful, excellent service and fantastic meals.
I had the halibut with a safron sauce - perfect, wife had lamb chops - perfectly prepared. The artic char was a little bland, but not bad. great appet. and deserts.

This was my second visit to
This was my second visit to Chef's Station in 3 weeks and I again found it rewarding. It's pricier than I usually spend but worth it on a special occasion. The tab for one cocktail and one glass of wine apiece, shared first course and dessert, and separate main courses, came to $160 with tax and tip. It won't be regular hangout for me but I will definitely return when it's time for a celebration.

Best Outdoor Dining in Evanston
What a wonderful way to spend an evening: romantic, attentive friendly service, superb food!

Great Indoor and Outdoor Dining
Aside from the wonderful food and service, we go here for the amazing atmosphere. It's always a difficult choice whether to sit in the super romantic (and ingeniously lighted) indoor dining room, or the wonderful outside patio, where you can watch the world go by. One of our favorite restaurants anywhere.
6/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
I really enjoy Chef Station. The food is always consistently good, as is the service. My only issue is that it just seems pretty dated and could use a good upgrade. It's rather dark and gloomy. It also seems as though it's a hangout for the over 80 crowd mostly. Go for the food but be aware you're going to feel like you went to the 1980s.

Great Outdoor Dining
Best place in Evanston to Enjoy a summer evening. I also think the Chef's Station has the best wine list in town, with a wide range of offerings categorized by style, as fair prices.

outdoors is very pleasant
we always enjoy the outdoor patio, but trains do make noise occasionally. the food is consistently very good.

Wonderful dining experience
Excellent food, attentive service and quiet atmosphere. Our guests raved about the soup. Fish special (grouper) was excellent.

The best risotto ever!
I order the vegetarian special mushroom risotto every time I come here. This time, I ordered the Arctic Char and ordered the risotto as a side dish for 4 people to share. Despite whatever they ordered, they loved the risotto, too. It is not on the menu, but you can ask for it. The rack of lamb was the best ever, said one of our guest.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
a bit pricey, but the food was generally very good although the appetizers sounded better on the menu than they tasted and at fifteen and sixteen dollars should have been better. The decor is sophisticated and comfortable and the host and service staff are professional and welcoming.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, great service!
I always go there for the chef's tasting menu, and I am never disappointed. One incredible bite after another. The service is incredible too.

A Unique Meal
It's rare that my friend and I have found a place we can have creative, delicious food enjoyed in the perfect ambience. Prtice, although not cheap, was fair for what we experienced.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Destination restaurant for friends wanting to chat while eating and drinking. Conversation friendly environment even on a Saturday evening. Corkage fee is $15 when you bring your own bottle of wine. Wait staff is knowledgeable re food and preparations except they do not take into account food allergies. When I asked for the meatloaf ingredients, the waiter said it was the "chef's secret". Food was consistently of good quality and taste and there appeared to be "regulars" at the restaurant. We all intend to place this restaurant on our list or suburban reataurants to frequent.

GREAT as always
Have been here many times and the food and service have always been superb.

Good food, service...no complaints
Well, I can't point to anything especially that stands out with this restaurant but when I go to a nice restaurant, I have higher expectations. So, that said, it lived up to those. Friendly service, good food, good drinks (not light on the alcohol). The outdoor area is actually an area of the sidewalk that they have blocked off and have done a nice job decorating the gates with flowers so that it feels a bit more dressed up. The inside is a quirky set of decorations and paintings. Went there with a group of people and everyone was happy with their meals and the service. I would go back again and would recommend to a friend although there's not anything that stands out as special.

We are from Washington, DC and whenever we are in Evanston, (three times a year) we always go to "Chefs Station," as the ambience, food and wait staff are the top of the line for us.

A real surprise.
We thought the restaurant was even better then all the reviews we read. Friendly service and outstanding food. We will definitely come back to The Chef's station.

Stop the Train at Chef's Station
We had been here on New Year's Eve in the past, and had a wonderufl time. This visit was no different; the quirky setting below a train staiton is offset by its casual elegance. Service was friendly and efficient at all times. The food was magnificant; our starters were huge, sweet scallops, as well as a venison-sausage stuffed quail (two more an it's an entree!) which were both terrific. Our entrees were a flatiron steak that was a huge portion, tender and tasty, and also duck breast that was delicious yet mild. The wines are listed by their characterisitcs, then the vintages; the prices are wide-ranging and very fair. Overall, a fine upscale establishment that calls for a return visit!

All good all the way around we have been there on several occasions and its always consistent the foos and service are outstanding.

Chef's Station in Evanston is a hidden Gem. Situated underneath the Metra tracks, it doesn't look like a place you would go for fine dining. The room is lovely with each table lit by a single copper tube which lends intimacy to the space. The menu has some basics: roasted chicken, meatloaf; but also has some wonderful "special" dishes - roasted duck breast with gnocci in a pinot noir reduction for example. We were there to celebrate my mother's 75th birthday and it was a perfect place. Not too loud, no over-the-top preparations, yet very thoughtful and creative. The cocktails and wine list are not so extensive as to overwhelm, but we all found something we enjoyed. I would highly recommend Chef's Station.

perfect salmon, perfect lamb and the meatloaf was a total surprise and delight. don't miss the crispy spinach

We celebrated our anniversary with a dinner out at Chef Station and it was just perfect! Food was excellent and the service was impeccable. We loved the ambience for this occasion since it was quiet but not boring. It allowed us to hear each other and enjoy our conversation. It's also a nice break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Best of all is the food though. Just amazing!

Delivered against Reputation
I've been walking past and looking at the menu for 10 years. Every time I read a review I've mentioned wanting to go here. Finally, I took my wife for our anniversary. Deciding what to order was a huge project, as there were way too many things I wanted. There is also a tasting menu, but I went with venison-stuffed quail, a beet salad, halibut entree, an extra side of brussels sprouts (because yum!) and a hazelnut souffle for dessert. Every single item was prepared to perfection. Given the fine-dining bent to the food, and the cylindrical presentation of some of the appetizers, the ambiance was remarkably not-stuffy. the casual(ish) surroundings suited the under-the-train-tracks location, and for me allowed me to relax and enjoy the food.

Food and service outstanding
Ate here Wednesday night, had a guest in town visiting NU. Selected this restaurant based on Zagat review. Food was superlative, the chef has obviously been classically trained. The service was also nearly flawless. We had a bottle of 2007 Stags Leap Artemis - I couldn't believe they still had this vintage, and price was very reasonable. There were only a few other tables occupied on the night we were there, which certainly detracts from the ambience. Hopefully we were just there on a slow night. Would definitely recommend for food, service and wine list.

Great food, not quite romantic
Food was quite good. Nice restaurant, attentive staff. Client average age 65-70 of those in the restaurant. Very subdue atmosphere, low on the hip rating. Didn't quite meet our mark with romantic... It was remarkably quiet: didn't hear a single outside noise from the interior.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Classic and comfortable
Fine dining yes- food & service terrific and yet in a warm and comfortable space. Expected the higher end prices and we were never rushed- able to leisurely enjoy conversation over various courses.

Went for the 1st time this weekend. Great place! Sauces were great. I think if I go more often I will know what is great and what is so-so. Mussels, scallops, Short ribs and lamb were great. Berkshire pork chop and Asian bass dry and a bit bland. I will go back. But maybe pork chop to thick to cook. I don't know, I am not an expert. But a love the place and will find other things to enjoy on menu. What I had was great. service was quick and nice. Owner was concerned. Came over to talk.

Chef's station is hidden in
Chef's station is hidden in a cul-de-sac off of Davis Street in Evanston. It is worth searching for. The food is fresh, flavorful, and inspired. One of the must try places on your visit to Northwestern.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We are repeat diners.
Our expectations for excellent food are always met. All aspects of the environment -- soft lighting, barely audible background music, general decor -- make for a relaxing experience.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
My first visit to the restaurant was approx. 10 years ago. My out of town friend who was there a couple of days ago wondered why I did not tell her about this gem of a place. She and her husband are what I would consider a high end foodie and so when she highly recommended this place, I decided to check it out with my husband and another couple. We were all greatly impressed .. The food was well executed, the service was impeccable and the ambience was charming. The only drawback for this place is its location which does not have a good visibility. It's location under a Metra situation adds to the quaintness. They also pay for the parking in a nearby parking facility. I recommend this place highly.

I read one review of chef' Station that said it wasn't hip enough for them. Well, you're right, they don't have a bar that serves 23 different kinds of "Tinis" or 50 types of tequilla. They just have innovative, perfectly prepared food in an attractive setting with great service and a good wine list hat is very reasonably priced.

A real "dining" experience
Chef's Station allows friends to converse without yelling and to really appreciate fine food without ever feeling rushed. The staff is attentive without the customary hovering that we find in so many other restaurants. It provides a rare dining experience in Evanston and one which my friends and I appreciate.

under the radar
Chef's Station offers outstanding food beautifully presented at good value. We were there on a week night so it wasn't very noisy and the service was excellent. Each of the four of us had something different which everyone enjoyed very much. My veal medallions were tender and delicious, an item one doesn't often find on menus.

Everything was lovely. The food was great - portions seemed a little on the skimpy side, but I think it was enough. The room was very pretty and even though it was crowded and lots of people were talking, we could still talk at our table without shouting, which is very important to us. We'll return for sure.

Wonderful Dining Experience
Chef's Station doesn't overwhelm you with the breadth of its selection, it allows the food to have that honor. Attractive presentation, ample sized portions that neither leave you feeling hungry nor over stuffed. The staff is warm, helpful and attentive, without being cloying or vulture like hovering to clear your plates as soon as the last forkful of delicious food passes your lips. This was our second time here, the first our anniversary last month, the second my birthday. An excellent restaurant for a special occasion, or simply a special meal.

What a delightful and gorgeous little place.
Took a couple of times driving around the block (Evanston and those 1 way streets!!) so when we got there with our guest, an elderly relative with a walker, it was a bit of a trial to toddle through the front patio (?) area and find the correct door on that bitter cold night. When we got inside we saw what a great place it was so we felt better.
Anyway, the food was delicious (salmon, turkey and special risotto dish) with out of this world salad with pecans and the soup was scrumptious plus desert was great (tart.)
We would definitely go back there and are planning to do so on NYE - just the two of us this time.
