The food was great but we
The food was great but we had seat by the door and every time someone came in (which was every few minutes in this busy restaurant) a cool gust of wind came with them. Really cold and distracting!
The service was uneven between attentive and very polite to distracted and overwhelmed.
The food was delicious and the saving grace, with great sake and shochu seletion

Fantastic food and service!
Fantastic food and service! I've eaten at Torishin many times and it is my absolute favorite place for Yaki Tori. A recent trip to Tokyo confirmed my opinion of the excellent quality of this restaurant. It is as good as you'll find in Tokyo.

This is my four time to Tori Shin and every time it is great. I had the omakase and love it. My favorite is the chicken soft bone.

All the food was so good.
All the food was so good. Even green tea icecream was so different. Felt like as if we were in Tokyo. We had so much fun!!

Awesome piece of Tokyo in NYC
Excellent food! One of the best Yakitori places I have eaten in many countries. Service is good. Ambience is smoky at times, exhaust system can be improve. Food quality is great and surely will return next time I'm back in NYC.
4/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is my second visit to Tori Shin and it was even better than the first. This is some of the greatest food and sake that I have ever had, and the service is perfect. It's definitely pricey, but well worth the expense. And I rarely say that.
4/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
I've been here a number of times when I have friends who are visiting from out of town - and have always had a good experience. The yakitori is really well done and prepared, and my favorites are the aorta, gizzard, chicken meatballs, and the chicken oyster. First-timers should try for the omakase menu (or chef's selection) which is reasonably priced and includes a selection from the 'special skewer' section. Generally you are not able to choose the skewers even then, although you are allowed to make requests (although it is not guaranteed that they will be able to accomodate you) and tell the chef what you don't eat. They have a good selection of sake as well to complement your meal. In short, go with an open mind and empty stomach!

Great dining experience, loves it!
Best Yakitori in town! Char grilled uni was delicious! Omasake was a great value! Heart joints aka main arteries was awesome.

A piece of Tokyo in NYC
This is just how a good yakitori place is in Tokyo. Noicy, happy people, great food!

I have been here several times. And I was impressed by the amazing food and hostility every visit. Price is moderate for a Michelin restaurant. Cozy space.

Great Food, Great Service
If you appreciate real high quality food and you want real Japanese yakitori, this is the place to go! The service is amazing too. It is not cheap, but it's totally worth it.

Authentic Japanese Yakitori
Tori Shin is like having your favorite Japanese Yakitori restaurant transplanted from Tokyo to NYC. The look, taste and ambiance are "the real thing".

Tokyo in Manhattan
Tori Shin is an authentic Yakitori joint similar to the best places in Tokyo. The food is fantastic. The Tare used to season most skewers is rich and delicious. The presentation is spot on. Also the foodie flourishes were delightful. In particular the Japanese Tomato served with rock salt was spectacular as a palate cleanser and a perfect ripe tomato experience. Besides my son and I there were only Japanese in the restaurant at the time we came (a busy friday night right in the heart of the service time. Place was packed and service was gracious. Though not cheap (given the product is chicken) the price is the lowest I have seen for an authentic Tokyo experience. In NYC to get such a great meal at a sushi bar would be three times the price.

Japanese Style Yakitori
This is the very Japanese Yakitori retaurant. If you are not familier with that, you may feel some unexpected things as the other commented. But this Yakitori can serve the real Yakitori.

great good but not standardized
I love this place and their food but I do have a bit complaints. Each time I went I ordered the 55 dollars omakase set meal.
Not until my second visit did I realize the dessert I got first time was much smaller than I should get.
And I alaways got the special oyakodon. But the latest one I got used a smaller bowl than I used to have. I really hope I should always get what i am supposed to get or more.

This was one the most amazing food experience I had in these last years. Period.
Food quality, variety, cooking, and taste were perfect.
Service was impeccable. Staff was very helpful and friendly.
Sake selection was great (especially by the glass, if you explore restaurants alone like me).
This is the kind of place where you bring your best friends because you care about them.
I only wish I lived in NYC... Now I have to plan my next trip...
Final words: Strongly recommended.

I've been coming here once in a while for about 5yrs now, and it never disappoints. The food is great, the place is small but lively, and the service is friendly. It's definitely not on the cheap side, but I think the course is a great value & variety for the price. I'll definitely return whenever I have a craving for yakitori!

Authentic yakatori in NYC
Doesn't get any better or authentic then this. Food quality is excellent and the service is always friendly.

Tori shin is my go to spot, any time I am in Manhattan.
Never a disappointment! Try anything the Chefs recommend!

LIke being in Japan!
My wife and I dined here on a Sunday night. Walking into the restaurant was like leaving NYC and ending up in Tokyo. A very authentic experience. Service was precise and friendly. While yakitori may seem like a simple thing, when it's done right, it's a whole new experience. They do it right here. Chicken that's cooked to the exact perfect temperature and texture. Love, love, loved the food!!! Extensive list of sake and shochu and good, Japanese beer on tap. An excellent experience overall.

Food was great. They seem
Food was great. They seem to size you up and if you order the Chef's selection - they do not serve you some of the skewers that experienced Yakitori eaters would expect - which can be good for the squemish or bad for the adventurous. Would go back - and you can use as dinner or a single course if you are doing a multi spot night. Glad we did the Chefs selection on first visit but would prob do a la carte next time.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
It turned out to be a very enjoyable evening with great service and great food..plus we were very lucky to
be sitting next to three chefs from Per Se...

Happy at Yaki!
Exactly as described in Michelin - the use of white charcoal and premium raw material (food) make it a winner. Knowledgeable and friendly staff adds to the mix. If you like eating at a table vs. a sushi bar, get there on the early side or for lunch.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
First time trying yakitori and Tori Shin was wonderful! The chef/owner was considerate and interested in making our experience really terrific, and he succeeded. Excellent service, ambiance, you name it. We did the omikase and left stuffed. The granita for dessert was precisely what we needed to cap off the lovely meal. We'll definitely be back.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Yakitori Tori Shin serves chicken in every yakitori manner possible. Every one is delicious! I ha things that sounded like they would be odd - like chicken neck meat. It was AMAZING! Perfectly seasoned and grilled and a lot more meat (and no bones) than you would expect. We had the omakase meal - which leaves the choices to the chef - although I specified no organ meats. Every selection was delicious including the vegetable selections and rice dish at the end of the meal. I cannot believe I had never been here before now. It is excellent and I hope to return many times! Note that this is not a place to eat and linger, there will be anxious diners waiting for tables and the staff politely move you along.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Really good yakitori. Menu
Really good yakitori. Menu was a bit more limited than some of the other places in town, but I'll trade that for getting to make a reservation and not having to wait an hour! Good sake as well.

Michelin starred skewers
Definitely the best skewers I've ever eaten - I even managed to understand what some of them were (chef demonstrating position of oyster by pretending to be chicken was my favourite bit). However, I had a booking for 8.30pm and there were seats available when I arrived, but I had to hang around standing up in the doorway for over 30 mins before someone decided it was time to seat me. Nobody asked if I had a booking, so I had to insist on giving them my name so they could confirm. Once seated, service was friendly and generally good .... but nothing like Michelin star level service. Food v good, but didn't amaze me ... atmosphere of the place, and watching chefs do their thing made the evening really enjoyable.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
A great authentic yakitori spot frequented by the Japanese ex-pat community, is reminiscent of a crowded yakitori bar in Tokyo. Sitting in front of Ikeda-san is a treat as grill to mouth time is shortened to enjoy the ultimate flavor of charcoal and heat. Just a word of caution, avoid later seatings in the evening as their farm fresh ingredients and exotic parts run out fast. I was very disappointed that I could not try the liver on my recent visit but chicken tail (bonjiri) and chicken wing (teba) definitely made up for it.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
This place is awesome.
The food is delicious. My only complaint is that my waitress could barely speak English. I wouldn't always have an issue with this, but when being served obscure parts of a chicken, it would be nice to understand what it is you're eating. We spent 5 minutes going back and forth to determine that she was serving us the Main Artery.

We've lived in the neighborhood for many years, but had never stopped into Yakitori Tori Shin until several months ago and were surprised at what a great spot was so close by. Food is simple, fresh and excellent, and sitting at the counter is a lot of fun. We were so taken with the experience, including the extremely solicitous and friendly staff, that we have become regulars and enjoy going as often as we can.

Great Food, OK Service
The food is impeccable but the service is lacking.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
A la carte is better
The omakase did not blow me away. It wasn't terrible by any means, but most of the food items were just good, not outstanding. The seasonal dish (fried chicken and yuzu) and the vegetables (mushrooms and gingko nuts) were scrumptious, but the yakitori was just okay. I didn't really enjoy the liver and gizzard (but I sort of expected that). However the breast and thigh yakitori is just underwhelming and dry. Overall I liked my last visit (where I ordered a la carte) much better. The meatballs were really good, as were the fried dishes. Service, like in most japanese restaurants, is exemplary. Overall, I would still recommend Yakitori Tori Shin, but if you want to avoid eating chicken gizzard, skip the omakase.
