Great and unique place. Delicious
Great and unique place. Delicious and unusual food. Relaxed talking atmosphere. Parking down street 7$. No photos in hotel (historic place). No cell signal. Loved the place stayed late too. Yummy dessert too.

The food, ambiance was totally
The food, ambiance was totally amazing, and by far one of my go to favorite restaurants! But I would have liked our waitress to have been a little more attentive. I felt like whenever we needed something we had to flag her down, it took a good 15min for us to get our first round of drinks!. I understood it was busy, so it wasn't such a big deal. If still come back and would recommend to friends. Loved the confit tongue, and definitely one of the best I've had.

The entrance was dismal but
The entrance was dismal but we were met with friendly and attentive staff. Food was delicious with somewhat different flavors than you would expect. We enjoyed the latkes, the soy-ginger-chili broccoli, and the chips. Matzoh balls were dry and bland except for the bacon. Ambiance is rustic, lighting dim but pleasant. Nice to be able to see the kitchen as they created the food. Would highly recommend. Staff helped make this an especially memorable culinary experience.

One of my favorite spots in
One of my favorite spots in LA...the food is always great but I think the craft cocktails have fallen a tad. I would love to seem them ramp up the bar vibe a touch.

A night worth spending
Came in for a Monday night dinner. Started at the Bar, and stayed there for dining given that the craft cocktails were great and the service was attentive, engaging, and very hospitable.
Had a few dishes which tasted excellent. The Papas and the Beef Tongue Con Feit were exceptional.
Ambiance was cool and anti which I like...given the old hotel scenario for a base and the lighting it came across like an old Mickie Spalane Episode. Which is a compliment.
As well, I really dig the exposition style kitchen. Being able to see the action is a good thing.

Downtown hip place inside a hotel
Interesting set up in terms of where it's located and how you find it. I felt like I wandered into the set of 'The Shining' for a moment. Great food - tapas portions and great service. I'd go back.

You could be more adventurous,
You could be more adventurous, or play it safe with food choices. Loved the creativity and fun in several options. So happy to find such a place that isn't a "scene". Will definitely hit it up again.

Must try this place
Food is very unique but fabulous. Must try the latkes w/smoked apple sauce. The cucumber,
Crunchy garbanzo beans and avocado was amazing. It is VERY loud here and it is a smal
place so make a reservation .

Cool hole in the wall
If you're venturing downtown, this is a great place to try. Hidden away in a building that a generous soul would describe as having Faded Glory, it's got hip-on-a-budget decor and an adventurous menu. Try the bacon wrapped matzo balls just cuz, and don't miss the broccoli. Absolutely delicious. My favorite item on the dessert menu was "buy the kitchen a round of beer". We did. They deserved it.

Perfect for Groups
The food is of incredible quality. The hostess seemed a bit strange, but the wait staff and service, in general, was amazing. Perfect for large groups

Unusual location for this unusual restaurant. Always wanted to try the bacon wrapped matzo balls. Excellent!
Unusual menu but food is excellent.

Fantastic all around
Food was amazing. Specifically the Banh Mi Poutine was friggin unbelievable, so was the chicken skin BLT and the cow tongue confit... Great cocktails too. We go to a lot cool restaurants but they all serve a lot of similar foodie stuff like pork belly, which is great but this place really does it in a new way.

Small, adventurous, creative menu
A LOT of newer places have opened up DTLA and I feel Gorbals has been overlooked. I myself haven't been back in a LONG time and after this last visit, will definitely be putting it back on regular rotation. There's nothing super scary though there is a DELICIOUS tongue on the menu that everyone must try - the BEST tongue EVER. Along with the much lauded Bahn-Mi poutine. MAN that was good! The noise level can get ridiculously loud so I suggest weeknights for those w sensitive hearing such as myself - regardless, get yourself over there especially if you haven't since the bacon-wrapped-matzo-ball hype.

Second time was better!
The food & service were great! The lamb neck was out of this world. Their bone marrow is the best in town.

The food was unusual, and
The food was unusual, and some items were better than others. My husband and mother are very adventurous in their food choices and we were there to celebrate my husband's birthday. My daughter and I are very picky eaters; however, everyone enjoyed something. We tried the lamb's neck, bone marrow, matzoh balls with bacon, the grebness (sp?)(fried chicken skin), broccoli, corn, and fish, as well as the sticky pudding/bread. I had a terrific beer and my husband and mother drank a grenache wine, also very good. The decor was stark but the atmosphere was very fun, with the mismatched chairs, and soft lighting. Our hostess/ waitress, Claire, was patient with all of our questions. All in all, it was a terrific evening. Ilan Hall was not there. : (

Unique location inside of the funky Alexandria Hotel, food is very creative and tasty!

Creative but not over the top
Distinctive menu, mostly well executed. I like that the menu isn't over ambitious so they can focus on quality over quantity. Some specials would be nice, particulary in the middle of summer when there's such an abundance of good produce. We ordered a ton of dishes and left our plates clean. The cocktails were very good and the beer list extremely well chosen. The feel of the place is very non-L.A. and there are some charming eccentric touches. Very fair prices.

Especially great on Thursday nights
Walking into the Alexandria Hotel is like stepping back in time. Then you see the doors to The Gorbals and you're not quite sure what lies behind them - its like stepping into a 1930's speakeasy. Love the look and feel of the place. Order food for the table to share - Confit of beef tongue, banh mi poutine, charred mango are all delicious. Bacon wrapped matzo balls sound interesting but just kind of miss.
Thursday night is a must (especially on artwalk night) as the California Feetwarmers start playing at 10 pm. They are so good - their brand of '30s jazz is awesome. Then all of a sudden, kids in their 20's get up and dance between the tables - the Charleston, the jitterbug - they can really dance! I guarantee you'll have a great time!

Gorbals was recommended by a friend, so we decided to take our chances. It was the best decision ever! The dining area is a little odd and it's a little loud, but still so worth it. We happened to go during Dine LA so we were able to try a lot of foods off the menu...everything was to die for. So many favors! We will definitely be going back...short ribs and poutine fries here I come!

I ate here for Dine LA. It was the first time I'd been to Gorbals and it was a great experience. As a Top Chef fan, I had some high expectations and they were all met. The service was amazing from the moment we walked in the door. The food was some of the most delicious dishes I've never tried. Never thought I'd be recommending Bison Short Rib to anybody but everyone should try it. I will definitely be going back to try the rest of the menu.

Interesting and eclectic hidden gem inside an old hotel. A bit sketchy at first, but then you get the charm. The food is very interesting and flavorful with lovely presentation. Another fun option at this restaurant is the $20 all you can drink for 2 hours deal. They served a nice red wine and there were a few beer choices. We would have liked more refills, but the restaurant was really busy doe to dine la week. I will return to this place and recommend it highly.

Great Ideas in food
The restaurant was part of Dine LA and the menu had most of the things we had wanted to try. Their persian cucumber dish is very tasty in a simple, subtle way. I tried a bite of the watermelon dish which was infused with pepper, I enjoyed the contrast. The bahn mi poutine tasted great, but the gravy became a bit watery. (Still ate every last bite). My husband had the bison short rib, which was a piece of glazed, tender goodness. We also ordered the bacon-wrapped matzoh balls, which were super-light clouds enrobed in pork. Yum. The latkes are so-so, the apple sauce accompaniment was extremely smoky. The dessert was a sticky toffee pudding, and a bacon ice cream. Loved it. We will definitely be returning.

Located inside Hotel Alexandria built in 1906, Chef Ilan Hall really crated a unique space for Gorbals. We sat at the chefs table and we were able to see Chef Ilan's talent come alive. He was funny, welcoming, and you can see he is passionate about his dishes. He plated each dish with love. We ordered the Pig Head. What a treat! It was delicious. Beware that it may be too fatty for some, but the flavors were out of this world. It's quiet the experience! The bacon wrapped matzoh balls were a delight. For dessert? The Sticky toffee pudding with ice cream was out of this world! Must try.
A real treat to seat in front of chef Ilan. His food gets an A++ in my book! Service was exeptional! Gorbals has a great vibe.

Even if it's a meal of new and unfamiliar dishes everything is still delicious. Only problem I came across was getting too full to keep working down the menu. An excuse to go again I guess. If you choose to go here be open to trying new things and stepping out of your regular food comfort zone and you'll be satisfied.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
The staff & food here is amazing. We went late friday night (11:15pm) and were seated at the kitchen (which we love!). There as a band playing & everyone was dancing.. it was very lively!

Give me more Gorbals!
Food was great. Ambience was divine. It server was very accodimidating. Bacon wrapped matzho balls were plenty tasty.
The lamb dish was sooo delicious and tender. Bahn Mi Poutine was definitely different. I'm coming back to get the marrow. They ran out of it by the time we arrived, bummer.

This place offered an exotic yet simple entrée.
Chic and simple atmosphere.
Amazing and heart felt music and great dancing!!!
I loved it!!!!

This is a great place for
This is a great place for foodies -- but only for scruffy foodies, not snooty foodies. Great list of whiskys and tasty small plates, all in a cool space with a hip but knowing staff. Reminds me of the East Village/Lower East Side in New York before Bloomberg turned it into Disneyland for the rich. Easy to get to via Pershing Square Red Line stop too.

Veggies can taste this good?!
Almost got into a knife fight over the last of the broccoli and brussel sprouts. Saw an article in the LA Weekly that mentioned this place so I decided to finally check it out. I knew it would be good, but I had NO IDEA. We booked a table for 2 at 6:00pm, right when they opened and the service was excellent. The waiter was attentive and very friendly. He mentioned that all drinks are 1/2 off during happy hour so we ordered a few rounds. The "It's Bourbon, Honey" was fantastic, as was the Molly Mule. I can't wait to go back and try a few more items!

Inventive & indulgent menu
Fantastic food with surprising combinations like bacon-wrapped motzah balls and banh mi poutine. However, the duck latkes was probably my favorite dish. Not a lot of healthy options on the menu, but--in the moment--one hardly cares. The small plates are great for sharing & trying several things. Great cocktail, beer & wine options too. The building has a lot of character and the atmosphere is kind of dark & moody--appropriate for downtown. Not pretentious; just good food. Can't wait to go back!

The Gorbals — great food, fun place
The Gorbals is an excellent place to to try a variety of food. We had the poutine, duck latkes, motzah balls and beef tongue as savory bites and the toffee pudding.
Everything was delicious and offered new takes on maybe some familiar foods. The poutine was amazing. The fries are thriced-cooked and were super crispy. The beef tongue was my favorite part. It was like a really good roast with a little different mouth-feel.
The dessert was very good. We were lucky enough to get both ice cream option — banana and basil.
Overall, the restaurant is a cool place with great food. The service is ok, but I wish they would change plates w/o asking. Also, the pacing of plates coming out is a touch quick.

The restaurant is hidden inside the Alexandria Hotel. Once we found our way in, we realized its charm. This place was perfect for our Friday night date. Our server was very attentive and full of suggestions. We had the brussel sprouts, fries, and bone marrow. Everything was delicious. I will definitely be back!
