Every bite was delicious!
Our friends who joined us - it was their first time - said it was one the best meals they'd had in a long time - and that the "chicken under a brick" was definitely the best chicken dish they've ever tasted. The cauliflower and hummus continue to be absolutely fantastic, and two of the specials, an octopus appetizer and a skate main course were superb. Service was, as always, friendly and professional. We were full, so no room for dessert. But we're counting the days until we go back.

This rustic little space transporte
This rustic little space transported my family and me back to Israel. Food was simple and delicious - standouts were the Mediterranean sampler (za'atar pita is like a tasty cloud). My husband enjoyed his merguez sandwich and my shakshouka was flavorful.

Balaboosta doesn't disappoint
From the fried olives to the shrimp kataif to the red snapper, I was thoroughly pleased. I'm a long-time Taïm fan, and I'm happy to say that Balaboosta did not disappoint. I can't wait to go again — next time for brunch!

I love the energy of this
I love the energy of this restaurant. We went with the classic crowd pleasers- the hummus, the crispy cauliflower and eggplant bruschetta then tried a newer dish of snapper - all delish!

Birthday at Balaboosta
A colleague at work recommended that I try Balaboosta. We were discussing Mediterranean food and I was gushing about Tunisian cuisine being my favorite in the region. So, when I was looking for a place to have a memorable meal for a friend's birthday I immediately thought of Balaboosta. The menu is simple and does not overwhelm new diners. Before we were seated, the bartender offered an excellent Moroccan Syrah to go with our meal that was the perfect accompaniment to our dishes. The food was beautifully plated, elegantly seasoned and offered a delicious range of vegetarian to beef, lamb and chicken options. Our server was kind, patient, well informed and like the ambiance, he was non-intrusive and graceful. A wonderful experience!

Really enjoyed it
And we were about an hour late but they still saved our table. Food was really great.

We headed here from NYU with our daughter for a late dinner and were thoroughly satisfied. The hostess gave us a very warm and friendly greeting. We arrived early, and she said she would try to seat us early, which she did. We shared the Boneless Organic Half Chicken Under a Brick, Crispy Cauliflower and a salad. The chicken was very flavorful and the skin was particularly crispy. The cauliflower was great: crispy with interesting spices. I didn't have any salad but I heard it was good. For dessert we shared the Kanafeh. It was delicious. It didn't quite taste like the Kanafeh that I'm used to eating in Israel, but I still thought it was exotic and delicious. I would go there again.

FANTASTIC! However, lamb chops are very teeny - they should add one more chop. The short ribs and chicken were very generous portions and incredible. Biggest detraction: someone asked for a gluten-free substitute for the bulgar wheat side dish and our server didn't want to accommodate [She told them ANY of the other veggies or side dishes that didn't have wheat in them would have worked, like the kale that comes with the short ribs]. So - absolutely top-notch, flavorful, fantastic food, but if you are celiac, don't count on being accommodated. [Surprising, since so many people have gluten-intolerance].

Did not disappoint 2nd time around
We were excited to return, and are happy to report that we weren't disappointed the second time around.
We stuck with small dishes and appetizers and created a wonderful meal.
Dishes that we liked include: hummus; cauliflower; watermelon salad.

A chef recommended Balaboosta to me. The menu online looked promising with echoes of Ottolenghis cooking (in UK). The restaurant was busy and loud on arrival and we liked the feel of it. The portions are large and we just had two appetisers (humous and pitta and courgette pakoras with minted cucumber yoghurt (tzaziki). I ate chard spaghetti with ricotta and walnuts and my daughter had the street food which was sweet potato chips, chicken I think in a flat bread and pickled veg. Excellent bottle of Rioja. Took home banana and date bread pudding which was again..delicious! Nice service, friendly fun ambience. Probably our most interesting meal in Soho this trip. Highly recommended.

Great Middle Eastern
We recently enjoyed a wonderful birthday celebration at Balaboosta. From the moment we sat down, our server was friendly, attentive and full of helpful information. Our water glasses were refilled without asking, he suggested delicious menu items and made sure to include a candle in the birthday girl's dessert. All four in our party absolutely loved the incredible crispy cauliflower, as well as the silky-smooth chicken liver paté special!!! We tried many of the appetizers/small plates and were not disappointed. The hummus might have been one of the best I've ever eaten. Although the "Israeli Street Fair" wasn't the best for sharing, we all devoured it and the accompanying sweet potato fries were amazing. I would definitely return!

Definitely worth trying
Hadn't been before, but a client recommended it. Great food, great service. Very much a family-owned feel.

Another great meal
Every bite was delicious (again)! We're now regulars, but continue to be amazed by how good everything is. Appetizers/small plates included the fried olives, cauliflower and a special calamari a la plancha. Mains were the chicken under a brick, the outstanding short rob, and the whole daurade. And for our vegetarian guest, the market salad special and the lentil pakoras. Plus a side of sautéed endive. Totally delicious. And don't forget to order the pomegranate honey iced tea!

The food is fantastic, the ambiance is really nice but watch out for the Maitre D', he is so rude it is shocking he still has a job!

Thoroughly enjoyed this middle-eastern/mediterranean restaurant. This is the third time I've been here - and my first for dinner. Every time has been fantastic. The specials were great - I really enjoyed the monkfish with okra and roasted tomatoes. The dessert was also fabulous - very interesting - not your usual cheesecake and apple pie.

Great food in an adorable quaint atmosphere. I especially loved my red snapper. All the ingredients are really fresh. Our waiter even brought out a dish on the house because he overheard us talking about it.

Lively lovely Little tel-aviv
It was after finding the cooking book, that we found the restaurant, and what a great discovery!
The food is really packed with Israeli flavours and the front of the house really charming and helpful.
Only "but" , it can get very busy and loud at night, but that is a little price to pay.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lived up to expectations
We had a hard time getting reservations here previously and were excited when things finally worked out. Every dish ordered at the table was excellent. The flavors and textures just sang. All 5 of us were delighted with our selections and would return without a doubt.

Enjoyable Dining Experience
Our first visit to Balaboosta...hopefully, one of many. The menu is thoughtfully creative, the service is warm and friendly and the setting is small enough to be personal not tight. The staff knew their food and wine very well and the kitchen, which is mostly open from the dining room seems to be incredibly efficient operating within a tight space. Highly recommended.

Great, Unusually Delicious Food
We loved Balaboosta. The eggplant bruschetta, lentil fritters, chicken......and everything else was fantastic. The food combinations are unusual and delicious.

I dined at Balaboosta for the first time this evening. We were a party of 4. From the appetizers to the first course to the main course and dessert everything was so delicious. I cannot wait to dine there again. Do yourself a favor and go there.

Mediterranean Gem in Soho
This low key restaurant will delight your tastebuds. Delicious and healthy food prepared with flavors to be savored.

Tasty Mediterranean treats. Stick with small plates. Nice variety especially crispy cauliflower and burrata. Pizza ok but a bit bland. Pleasant service...but a noisy room

Very good Efendi!!
Really a good hit out of the obvious NYC scene.
It was indicated by a local and everything was really delicious. The Boneless Organic Chicken was amazing!
Good Gin&Tonic to start. Little noisy but great vibe!
Already in my NYC list!

Good but somewhat uneven
Good vibe at the restaurant, and generally healthy and yummy israeli/ mediterranean food. The appetizers we had were mostly vegetarian and delicious, including the hummus, salad special and zucchini pancakes with yogurt sauce. Especially noteworthy was the fresh from the oven pita bread that came with the hummus. The entrees for our group were mixed. I had the lamb pappardelle, which was delicious. A friend had the grilled dorade, which was excellent. But two in our group ordered the short ribs, which were surprisingly dry and lacking in flavor. Dessert of berry cobbler also very good. Service was friendly and proficient. Noise level was decent for downtown.

Neighborhood gem with great food
The food is excellent and the atmosphere is great. There is a trendy nice comfortable vibe in this place and the food is very interesting and tasty. We will definitely go back !

We had the best meal. The food was incredible, the service wonderful, staff veryf riendly and helpful. We arrived early and they sat us down. One of our party arrived 45 minutes late and they were so nice and let us sip wine and eat a small plate while we waited. I would go back in a heart beat. The food was memorable!

Had lunch here with two friends who'd never been. They were both very impressed, not only with the quality if the food, it also by the friendly service. Be sure to get the chopped cabbage salad - absolutely delicious!

Outstanding celebratory meal!!
My fiancee and I celebrated our engagement recently at Balaboosta. Perfect from the moment we walked in when we were greeted with celebratory champagne. We've been before for brunch (love!) but this was even better. Each course was different yet interconnected, and very interesting. Eggplant, with brilliant touches of honey and smoke, was the best eggplant I've ever had...would eat it daily if always tasted like this. Ceviche...Short ribs and skirt steak...Crumblee...all fantastic. Service was exquisite, as well. Will certainly be back.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Interesting twist on Mediterranean
We shared 2 apps(fritters and a burrata with a date /walnut pesto both very very good ) and then had two small plates- an Israeli gyro with sausage and chicken and a Swiss chard spaghetti with artichokes . Both were so so good. Could have done the whole meal again. Dessert a yummy date/ banana bread with yogurt ice cream. The people next to us had chicken baked under a brick that looked crispy and succulent. I will definitely be back!
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
The ambience is inviting and warm and the food full of love...everything is fresh and layered with vibrant flavors and textures. The Bellini's are made with fresh peach puree and are not overly sweet like most, the Blood Mary's are tasty and have a great kick!
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Something for everyone
Steak, snapper and cauliflower all wonderful, we will return, it's comfortable, not too loud, portions are right, our party of 4 finished everything on our plates and we stayed for coffee and tea.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great meal - not to be missed
Back for or another wonderful dinner with friends. Specials were all amazing - the market salad, potato latkes in honor of Chanukah, Persian meatballs served almost like a "pot pie" but with flatbread as the cover - and the regular menu mainstays (fried olives, cauliflower, short rib) were delicious. Copious portions, friendly and professional service, and a really warm vibe.
11/24/2013 4:00:00 PM
Picked it b/c I loved the name, but was delighted to find the food at least as appealing. All of us loved it (including my foodie nephew) and we even ordered a second portion of the pakoras.
11/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
Nice to get a couple of blocks
Nice to get a couple of blocks off the beaten path on a busy Black Friday. This is a nice neighborhood place with a limited menu. It's a bit tight for seating as NYC restaurants can be and unfortunately we had a real talker seated next to our party, making it a bit noisier than I would have liked. But the food and service were very good and I would surely go again.

Surprising value for money
We loved Balaboosta. We had the ribs and the lamb chops which both were amazing. The portions are generous, so with a couple of sides we were pretty stuffed. I liked the semi-rustic vibe in the food (no extra mish-mash-fancy-bling-bling decoration, but simple, beautiful portions with the necessary ingredients and structure). This place is great value for money, make a reservation, thouhg. A lot of people had to turn back at the door, the place was really full. I especially recommend the place to groups of friends, after work long dinners. The vibe was energetic and pretty loud, felt like I could sit there drinking wine with friends the whole night through after a dinner.

A wonderful discovery
The food was excellent, the service attentive and the cost with in reason which is not the case with a lot of NEW York restaurants.
I do not understand when using open table, there are no points given to reward the user of this service.
12/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
The brunch was excellent. Portions corresponded to the low prices, so order some items items to share for the table. Service was very nice and attentive
