We've come to expact a lot from this establishment...yet, they always rise to the occasion. We're getting close to not even ordering...just say "Sonny, feed me!" and a wonderful selection arrives...

What a pleasant surprise
Wow! I reluctantly went to this restaurant after some coaxing from the husband. I've tried Indian food on several occasions and have always walked away disappointed but not at Lehja! The flavors and quality of the food was fantastic! Delicious! We will definitely be eating there again. Soon!

Amazing restaurant with absolutely
Amazing restaurant with absolutely amazing food. When we go, we ask Sonny to design a menu for us and we are always left feeling as if we've had a wonderful culinary experience. They also have a great mixed drinks menu and if you go there, try the Snake Charmer. It is a different but very successful take on a margarita. I can't talk about this restaurant enough...we only go for special occasions, but I wish I could there every weekend.

We love Lehja! Have been there several times and always had excellent service and delicious food. When our family visits from DC and NoVA, it's one their favorite places to eat with us. My husband especially loves their lamb chops.

Love everything about this place. Have eaten here at least 10 times and they are consistently good! They also make delicious cocktails! Be sure to try the mango gimlet!

My husband was reluctant to try an Indian restaurant, but I watched him devour his dinner and pronounce it "Delicious!" We all tried diffferent chicken dishes at a moderate spiciness level and the flavors were complex but not hot. Don't miss the chickpea appetizer; it may sound ordinary, but it certainly was not, and the waiter says the type of preparation changes frequently and that it mirrors various regional Indian preparations. We were celebrating a birthday and the staff went out of their way to makie it festive. A warm and inviting atmosphere and dining that expanded our food boundaries--it made the birthday dinner a special experience.

Great food,great ambience
We went there at 5:00 on a saturday, so not too crowded, had a great conversation with the owner who clearly has a vision for this restaurant, nice atmosphere, all three of us enjoyed our food and the experience

We dined at Lehja this past weekend. The restaurant was busy, but not packed. We were with our two young children. There is no kids menu, and while we did not ask, the staff did offer to make up a kids meal for us. While we appreciated the offer, we do not agree with asking restaurants to make non-menu items--and we are so glad we orded standard meals off the menu for all 4 of us. Both kids loved it--even our picky eater--and the leftovers were fantastic for lunch the next day.

Having been going to Lehja for several years, it continues the excellent quality in food and service that initially appealed to us. The menu shows slight changes each time in the dishes with the standard items remaining. The staff is extremely helpful when trying to understand the different dishes. As not all enjoy the same level of heat in their Indian fare, the staff is very attentive to your desires and will even amend a dish if it didn't come out hot enough for your taste.

Great ethnic dining
I loved our trip to this restaurant. Food was good, it was authentic Indian cuisine, not something Americanized. We enjoyed ou dishes and chef was great offering not spicy options for our kids. They were really cool with our kids. Atmosphere is very quiet, there is not much noise. We loved it.

Fabulous food and amazing service!
I had dined here with friends for lunch both outside and inside, and we always have a wonderful experience. This time, my husband and I went for my birthday -- what a treat! The food is absolutely some of the best Indian food I have ever had, in my limited Indian food experience. The flavors are so unique, I want to try everything! The server was wonderful at explaining all of the dishes and asking us questions so that he can find the perfect dishes that go well together and match our spiciness levels. The cocktails were fabulous and the wine list is superb. If you haven't already tried this place, it is a must!

Our entire family is addicted to Indian food, so this is our go-to place for any special occasion b/c both the service and food are phenomenal. They will always go out of their way to make it special.
There are new vegetarian/vegan offerings so we actually broke our usual: Paneer with chili sauce for an appetizer and the vegetable biryani and paneer with a cashew based sauce (can't remember the name) were all fantastic (and a nice change from my usual paneer shashlik). I would've licked the plate if I could. There is also an extensive wine list & these folks know their wines--love the Sula Vineyards chenin blanc. But save room for desserts such as kulfi & gulab jamun which are to die for.
Best indian restaurant in the area.

Great food! It wasn't just a meal it was an experience. But be prepared to pay for it. Two glasses of wine, one app. and two mains about $92.00. However, it was worth it.

Don't be put off by the mall...n
Not being a mall person, I hadn't tried this restaurant before. The food was amazing, the servers helpful and friendly, and the outdoor fire table was lovely. They even got a sense of our taste and offered up an off-menu appetizer that was delicious. This was a wonderful dining experience and I would definitely go back.

This place nevers disappoints which is why we end up eating here at least once a month. Both the food & service are consistently superb. Highly recommend letting the owner pick a bottle of wine as it's pretty diverse & expansive; also it covers every price point too. Now to the food--the paneer pakoras (appetizers) are to die for. I seriously could've made a dinner out of 4 plates & a bottle of wine! The salad is always good with apples, craisins & pistachios--the dressing always changes. For the entrees, the vegetable biryani was excellent as was the paneer mahkni & paneer shashlik (notice a trend here?) Dessert: homemade kulfi, chocolate cake & coconut cake. Worth every calorie & the 3 hour workout the next day.

for ethnic food afficionados
Not only is this authentic and very, very good Indian food, it would surpass the test of the most discriminating pallette as great dining. The only draw back is the lack of ambience, but I will take quality over ambience any time. The owner Sonny is always available to explain the various dishes.

Off the menu
Me and my husband are regulars at this restaurant. We usually have good meals, but this last time it was out of this world. The owner is always very friendly and came to talk to us as he often does. We started talking about some well known restaurants in the DC and New York area - especially their signature dishes. He said that they could re-create any dish we wanted - and they did! If you have a favorite Indian dish that you thought you couldn't get in Richmond, think again. Lehja will come deliver and you won't have to battle traffic in the big cities to get it.

Service was EXCELLENT! Manager
Service was EXCELLENT! Manager came out and had a quick conversation with us and ensured we had the best quality seafood portions available. Seafood was cooked very well! Everything was good. My only reason for not giving 5 stars was my personal preference on flavors. Indian seasoning were very different to me. Glad I tried them though, will take some getting used to. Very fresh flavors. Would go again. Prices very reasonable. Good portion sizes.

Best Indian outside of DC
Best Indian in Richmond.... and probably outside of DC in my opinion. Food, ambience, and service....but I'm going to focus on the food for this review as that was the star. We had various chicken, lamb, vegetarian dishes that were all so complex yet balanced in flavors. Cauliflower is normally not a favorite of mine, but by the suggestion of our server, we had the cauliflower appetizer as well as the chickpeas appetizer and that alone would bring us back. As we were celebrating a friend's birthday, we again went w the server's recommendation and got the "cake" dessert--yummy airy cheesecake-like consistnecy w mango flavors! Now the hard part is picking between Peter Changs and this restaurant when we are in the Short Pump area......

Glad we went
Our first time to Lehja. Saw it on Restaurant Week post and all the reviews were postive. I had Lamb Sagwala (not on the menu but they made it without hesitation). Wife had Chicken Biryani. Both were excellent and portions were very generous. It was packed for the middle of the week and a bit noisy. We will definitely return.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
impossible to have a bad meal here
Decided to be adventurous and try their restaurant week menu. We had the beet & arugula salad followed by the paneer kale ka salan & homemade kulfi. The paneer kale was very light and not spicy--could be described as a fusion version of palek paneer. Definitely would order it again. Love the fact that they know their wines and offer good wines at all price points. So I recommend letting the owner pick a bottle for you if you're not an oenophile.
Service is always top notch which is why this is the only restaurant that I can stand to actually eat in rather than do takeaway. They should run a school for servers in Richmond to learn how to serve.
I would totally eat here every day if I could afford to.

Excellent food served well
One of the best Indian food in a very tough competition. Excellent flavor, good presentation and good and pleasant service. For some reason it is not broadly known but my several visits there were always very satisfying.
