This is the third time I've been to this restaurant. They have an excellent selection of cheeses that are paired perfectly with jams. Their pasta is incredibly fresh, and the service was great.

new neighborhood favorite
Very impressed with the food. The house-made meatballs are simply divine. Our entrees were generous and delicious. And dessert??? We enjoyed the goat cheesecake with blueberries & strawberry shortcake. Decadent.
They have wine flights, which can always be fun. The attention to detail & customer satisfaction is high on the wait staff's list. My husband wasn't drinking and there were long stretches where he'd go without a water fill. This is not a negative, but nothing here is complimentary. The bread is a heavenly grilled foccacia, but it comes at $3 for two small-ish slices. It's delicious but doesn't go that far with a table of three.

We always love our time at Sonoma. The wine list is superb. The food delicious. And the service is outstanding!

We had FANTASTIC service during our dinner. One of the guests in our party didn't particularly love her entrée; however, the wait staff and manager were incredibly accommodating and gracious about the entree switch and she wound up loving her new dish. Highly recommend.

We popped over to Sonoma (a hot spot for the more upscale Capitol Hill crowd) for a nice lunch. The food is terrific but we had to wait a really long time for it to come out of the kitchen. I used to work in restaurants so I know this happens from time to time. I don't sweat it if the management handles it correctly, which they absolutely did. They lowered our bill and apologized and got the food to our table as soon as the mishap could be remedied. Properly and professionally handled. I would definitely go back and encourage others to d the same.

Sonoma is GREAT
We arrived late due to summer storms but no problem. The team at Sonoma helped up in very way. Their dinner suggestions, top service and time-clocked our meal with directions to The Folger. A perfect evening. Our only disappointment was that the show ended at 11PM leaving us no time for a nightcap and dessert at Sonoma. NEXT TIME!
Lenysa was GREAT! She deserves a raise!

Best for small plates
I have been to Sonoma a few times and the food is always good. I like the small plates menu the best as it has a great variety and isn't too filling. The cheese and meat boards are great too and the staff is well educated on both the wine and the food.
It is usually not very packed but somehow does seem a little loud - maybe because it is a smaller place?
Also, it is pricey but has a great atmosphere and it is right on the Hill, so to be expected...
Overally, I keep going back because the food is great and the wine flights never dissapoint.

Good Service and Food
Had a light dinner here while catching up with a colleague I hadn't seen in years. The waiter was great and the food was equally impressive.

We were impressed with the quality of food and en iron ent for the price given the area

Great For Date Night
This was a great little romantic spot right in the heart of DC. The menu is well-balanced and isn't too pricy unless you spring for some upper tier wines. Would definitely recommend.

I am always satisfied!
Sonoma is my No. 1 choice to bring important guests! They never disappoint me!

Delicious, deliberate and delicate
enjoy a lovely catch up with a friend over a delicious meal. Attentive, yet patient staff managed our long conversation before ordering - and made sure wine glasses were refreshed. Octopus was cooked to perfection. Eggplant parm was more like an appetizer, but delicate and yummy, and the salmon moist and delicate. A perfect meal.

Capitol Hill Gem
I have been coming here for several years because I know that the food and wine will make for a great evening. The ambience is sophisticated yet relaxed, with brick walls and low lighting.
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Why aren't there more restaurants like Sonoma, and when are they going to open one in Northern Virginia? Good and varied food, excellent wine, solid service, pleasant ambience, convenient neighborhood location - if you're on the Hill or in Bethesda (Redwood). We think Sonoma is the best so far of the group because it's a great place for a quick pre-theater meal or a long evening with friends. The wine choices are the primary draw, but the food (octopus, salads, pizza, pasta, burgers, small plates and full entrees) makes it a destination.

I always enjoy!
Excellent food and excellent and personalized service make me very happy there!

We had the Chef's Dinner for two, where each course was selected by the chef and was a complete surprise to us. Everything was delicious. The Israeli couscous was creamy and flavorful, by far the most pleasant surprise. Can't wait to do it again to find out what other surprises are in store.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had a deal for a chef's selection dinner and it was excellent. Salad, steak with polenta and asparagus and a chocolate panna cotta for dessert. Everything was amazing.

Near Capitol & Library of Congress
A great little restaurant on Pennsylvania SE between 2nd and 3rd--a mecca for small restaurants. Convenient for tourists to the Capitol and the Library of Congress which are 2 and 1 blocks away respectively. It's also popular with workers on the Hill. Since it touts itself as a wine bar restaurant, you can sit at the long bar for a casual lunch. We were there for Restaurant Week and had a $25 3-course offering which was excellent. A watermelon salad and an arugula salad with peaches were both pretty and delicious. A light offering of Pei mussels and of lobster fettucini with a pomodoro sauce were plenty to eat. Desserts were a modified bread pudding and a creamy goat cheesecake. At 12 there was space, but by 1 pm, it was packed.

Good for Restaurant Week!
I thought we received a decent amount of food for the prix fix Restaurant Week price. The wine selection is excellent and diverse. On the food itself, I have a mixed review of Sonoma. All the reviews said to try the meatball and polenta appetizers, but they were underwhelming. The calamari with lemon aioli paired excellently with the house white. Best main plate was the gnocchi, by far. My dinner companion ordered the pork, which was tough but flavorful. All in all, it's a great spot for a date, or a girls' night out!

Wonderful meal and service
Had a wonderful dinner on a Tuesday night. Four of us shared a charcuterie and cheese trey that was one of the best I've every had. Everything was delicious, and a "half trey" plus two cheeses was plenty for a party of four. Entrees and dessert were all delicious as well. The service was superb, and our waitress was both friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and wine list. She steered us toward two of the best bottles of wine I've had in a long time. With all the new restaurant options on the Hill, don't forget to go back to this gem.

What a find!
Having just recently moved to DC, I have been scoping out the area's restaurants and bars that have a local flare and a vibrant feel. I found this place when I did a search for restaurants located around the Capitol. I must say that Sonoma rates as one of the best dining experiences I have every had. Since my job requires that I travel world wide, that is saying a lot. The staff was courteous and efficient which added a great deal to the dining experience. The menu was varied and has some very interesting recipes and combinations that could satisfy everyone's palate. It was also very convenient that you could make a reservation, even for lunch. I can certainly recommend Sonoma without any reservations.

My go-to in the neighborhood
I love this spot on Capitol Hill . . . very good option for a casual meal. Ingredients are of great quality, fresh and the dishes are well prepared. My only suggestion is that, as a wine bar, the red wine should be presented at the proper temperature.

Delicious but Noisy!
First experience at Sonoma was definitely delicious, but had to move tables because we were seated next to a group that was quite loud. Not the easiest place to carry on a conversation without having to project your voice, but no complaints otherwise.
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
I went to try the Crab Feast for $38 this past Sunday. This special offered unlimited blue crab, sides of grilled corn, hushpuppies, cole slaw, potato salad and mixed greens. Overall, the sides were pretty good. The crab was a new experience for me...I don't tend to eat the small crabs. I think they were a little over-boiled, but not horrible. I would try it again. I think it was a great value for thee food provided.

Service matches the amazing food
Took out of town guests to Sonoma and the did it up right. Lemon slices for the water already on the table. Alerted them when we needed to leave and they accommodated our schedule while delivering amazing food and service. I go to Sonoma about once a week because of the level of food and service. Can't go wrong.

Small menu but good; expensive wine
Sonoma had a much smaller menu than I was expecting but I really liked it. I had the potato gnocchi and it was delicious! Perfectly prepared. I was a little disappointed by the wine list. Everything was very expensive with no middle-of-the-road wines, price-wise.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Hard Metal Tables
Overall the restaurant was very good - Service is great and food is great. But what is it with the hard, cold metal tables? A friend got a pizza, which, when delivered it chilled down right away because the tray sat directly on the metal table. This also adds to the noise level, though at lunch, noise is not a problem.
With that exception, I would highly recommend Sonoma.

Great Hill Restaurant
Sonoma is a great place to have a nice sit-down meal on the Hill that's reasonably priced.

South Capitol Tucked Away Gem
Our meal at Sonoma was memorable and delicious. The smoked trout with mascarpone cheese was wonderful and ranks among the most surprising and delicious appetizers I've enjoyed in recent memory. The ambiance was lovely, the wine hit the spot and overall, I would recommend Sonoma to anyone looking for elevated dining and a romantic, intimate evening on the town.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
I loved the Brioche French Toast with maple syrup. Truly delicious! And I liked the atmosphere. Great service. A perfect place for brunch before a Sunday matinee at the Folger!
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
My boyfriend & I recently used a Gilt City voucher for a 3 course chef's menu and a bottle of wine at Sonoma. We were not disappointed. We were each brought different courses which were fantastic. Our server was terrific and the food was delicious. I would definitely go back again.

It's dynamic place
I like this place, and food and service is good. Recommending!
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always a good option!
I love their pizzas and pastas, especially at lunch. The salads are definitely too small for an entree, but always good!

Sunday night dinner
Great to find such a good restaurant open on Capitol Hill on a Sunday. We'll be back as we live a 10 minute walk away.

Great food just by the Capitol
I took my parents to Sonoma to celebrate my mother's birthday. We were arriving into Union Station in the evening and there didn't seem to be many good restaurants to pick from in the area, but I liked the look of Sonoma from their website. I wasn't disappointed! The restaurant managed to be sophisticated and stylish while also welcoming and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and attentive and the food was very good. The pork belly small plate was absolutely sensational and all the other food we had - soup, pizza and pasta - was delicious. I would definitely go back as it's such a convenient location and suitable for any occasion: dinner with friends, on a date, on a business meeting or just for a drink at the bar.

I went for Sunday brunch and
I went for Sunday brunch and had the omelette, which was delicious. The only complaint was that I had to get up and get my own salt/pepper from another table. The service was a little slow.

The perfect place to to stop
The perfect place to to stop and have dinner before walkiing a block and a half to the Folger Theater to enjoy some Shakespeare. The wine list is very nice and reasonably priced.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was great but the entrees were lacking a bit. The rest was great. The service was good and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere.

European Cuisine, American Prices
Sonoma's menu and wine list continue at a very high level, unfettered by its ancient allegiance to local suppliers. We enjoyed every selection. The restaurant location, just behind the Library of Congress, is excellent for people working or attending events in the area. Parking on the street was easy to find. Service was a bit casual downstairs but very personalized and attentive in the lounge upstairs. Having just come from two weeks in Europe, where sin taxes on wine and spirits are unknown, our only complaint was with the relatively high tab for a meal with wine and after-dinner drinks shared by two. Goat cheesecake for $9? White wine for $15 a glass? Welcome home!
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
If you are in the neighborhood if Folgers theater this is a wonderful place to grab a bite and enjoy some wine. The cheeses & prosciutto are luscious the pate was excellent and we enjoyed Proseco with the entire meal!

Sonoma Restaurant, Washington, DC
I liked the quiet atmosphere but we were
there on Sunday night so don't know how it
it is on Fri or Sat. The beet salad was
fantastic as was the truffle risotto -- oneof the
of the best I've had anywhere. The kit-
chen was willing to split one order of the
risotto between two of us. The stuffed
eggplant was excellent. A good place for
vegetarians. The service was good and
the waitress most amenable. I hope to
return in the near future.

Stick with Recommendations
We found Sonoma while looking for a place to eat before seeing a show at the Folger. It was a good choice and we will go back, feeling comfortable from the time we entered until we left as it was friendly and unpretentious. Everything recommended for us was excellent, from the wine to the specific cheeses on the cheese plate appetizer to the special French Dip sandwich. The two things we ordered straight from the menu were not as good. The fried artichoke appetizer and the mussels main course were both a bit bland and the mussels were a bit soft. Neither sauce was exceptional, but the artichokes would certainly be helped with more capers on the plate.

Good food, nice atmosphere
Went with a friend on a Sunday night. It was quiet, but the waitstaff was attentive. The main menu was a little pricey for us, but we ordered the truffulo (mushroom) pizza and the mushroom burger. The pizza was good, but the burger was phenom. I love the new craze of house-made veggie burgers. It was delicious. The wine was great too. Unless you order like we did, this is definitely a 'treat yo'self' kind of place.

We were traveling by Metro from Bethesda to a show at the Folger Theater. Sonoma Restaurant & Wine Bar was a perfectly located choice, with a short walk from the Metro and then onward to the theater. The food was good and the service was excellent
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
This restaurant remains one of my favorite DC spots. The food is great. The service is always awesome- mainly because I never feel rushed or pressured to order quickly. I come here when I want to spend an evening eating and drinking (and tipping the servers well since its easy to take the table for the whole night).

Sonoma is our favorite pre-theater restaurant because the food is always very good & the service is always efficient and knowledgable. Highly recommend!
