Chet's taste not up to expectation.
The service and ambience were wonderful. However, the 6 course Chef's taste was not up to the same standard that we had enjoyed in the past. The main entree, braised short ribs, could best be described as "pot roast".

Still the best in town.
I looked at the new summer menu with some concern (why fix what isn't broken?) but once more had a terrific dining experience.
We enjoyed the pork shoulder and rack of lamb entrees with fried brussel sprouts. Dessert was a key lime preparation that was delicious. We shared a nice bottle of Stolphman Syrah with the meal.

Once again, Matthew's delivers
Party of five picky eaters with not a single complaint. Food was outstanding. My well-done beef tenderloin really was both well-done and tasty. Service was impeccable. Water glasses were kept filled, which is a big plus. The capstone was the Meyer lemon souffle with raspberry creme anglaise. Who knew that Meyer lemon and raspberry flavors would meld so well together? A bit dressy, a bit pricy, and totally worth it.

Slipped a Bit
We're long time Matthew Medure fans, having dined there the first time on Matthew's opening night. The restaurant started the fine dining scene in Jacksonville -- no small feat. But, the meal we had last week was off the mark. My wife's divers scallops and sweet potatoes were excellent, but my gray grouper was overcooked, and the corn stuff (don't know what else to call it) it was lying in was uninspired. The charcuterie plate we started with was excellent in taste, but for the money, very stingy. The soufflé to finish was chewy.
Our benchmark for an expensive meal has always had two factors: (1) we couldn't make it at home, or; (2) we couldn't do the dish as well. This meal missed on both criterion. We could have done it better.

Food was terrific, service
Food was terrific, service was the best. Our server, David, was absolutely on top of everything.
6/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
You will be hard pressed to find another restaurant in Jacksonville that serves better food and provides service as well as Matthews. If you truly want great food as well as great service then Matthews is where you need to go.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Classy, elegant atmosphere ideal for a special occasion. The radiatori-bolognaise (homemade pasta!) was scrumptious and the pork melted in your mouth. Our waiter surprised us with a Happy Anniversary message scrolled on our dessert plate - what a nice touch!
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went to this restaurant for my wife's birthday. With Opentable we were able to let the restaurant know this. At the end of the meal they brought an excellent pastry plate with Happy Birthday on it written in chocolate.
6/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Another fantastic night
I would get the chef's tasting menu every time. It's a wonderful dining experience.
6/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Jacksonville area's most sophisticated restaurant...and way better than Salt at the Ritz, or Azurea at One Ocean.
Bring your wallet.
6/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our first look at the new menu, we loved the additions, more choices and everything was great.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Outstanding dinner experience!
Wonderful service, great food preparation, lots of attention to detail. Definitely will return. The people who work there are well trained and are genuinely helpful and nice unlike other upscale restaurants that can be very pretentious. The sea scallops were cooked to perfection. The special drink menu offered some unique selections also. The lemon souffle and the chocolate torte were excellent dessert choices.

Excellent Dining Experience
What can I say, the food at Matthews was excellent. My "waiter" Sarah was OUTSTANDING. She was knowledgeable about the food and wine pairings, intelligent, funny, yet professional. If you demand great service, always ask for Sarah.
I give Matthews Five out of Five Stars.
I highly recommend the Chef's Adventure with the wine pairings.

Birthday Dinner for Husband
The 6 course Tasting Menu was superb! The delicious scallop carpaccio starter was unique followed by a trio of fantastic tomatoes, melon gazpacho, and then two meat courses: halibut, and rack of rabbit together with rabbit tenderloin wrapped in bacon. The sumptious homemade brie course with the honey & walnuts was wonderful. The dessert course with the creme caramel topped with caramel popcorn and the to-die-for blueberry compote which complemented perfectly was a stupendous ending to a memorable birthday evening for my husband. The dessert had a birthday greeting, so he felt quite special. Romantic dinner, lovely ambiance, attentive service, although not as warm or friendly as would have liked, more clinical and impersonal.

It's all about quality!
Our first time at Matthew's was fantastic. The ambiance is elegant but casual and friendly. The bar is placed away from the dining area so that there is no noise issue at dinner. The bar is extremely well stocked and the bar tender is excellent and knows his stuff! The dining area is open and elegant but simple and next to an open kitchen. The service was beyond reproach, impeccable and professional. The waiter was courteous and clearly knew the menu very well. The wine list is complete and highly sophisticated containing some rare wines. The food was excellent from the appetizers to the dessert. The ingredients were fresh, of great quality and expertly done. This is a great restaurant that clearly is about high quality at all levels!
6/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first visit the Matthew's after meaning to go for some time. It did not disappoint. The food was outstanding. We will absolutely return to try some of the other items on the menu.
Positives: food was delicious, the wine list is extensive, contemporary decor, manager made personal visit to the table
Critiques: service was initially a little slow, but improved as the night went on, my wife was initially given a damp napkin, parking was a bit precarious (this was somewhat expected due to the area)

plus- excellent wine selection,
plus- excellent wine selection, bread good, pleasant ambiance
minus- meal good, not great. small portions
overall= pretentious, overrated
suggestion- spend a week or two on the road- go to atlanta, new orleans, richmond (yes richmond), portland oregon (yes portland), san fran, savannah- surround yourself with success

Matthews is how you say exceptional
How many ways can you say exceptional? We choose seats at the "Chef's Table" to check out the action as this was our first experience at Matthew's and found the kitchen immaculate. My husband and I decided on the filet, diver scallops, fried brussel sprouts and lemon soufflé for dessert. The diver scallops were cooked flawlessly and served with a tasty citrus sauce; the filet was aged to perfection and so tender the steak knife was unnecessary. Without a doubt the best scallops and steak on the planet. The brussel sprouts were good; their preparation and cooking outstanding but the sprouts themselves were a little bitter. The lemon soufflé with a raspberry sauce was truly a taste of heaven. We can hardly wait to return!

Still good after all these years!
We usually only go to Matthew's a couple of times a year since we have moved to the beach. It's still a restaurant worth the drive. They recently changed the menu and seems like they have dumbed it down a bit. I really liked the fact that their menu was more elaborate than any other restaurant in town. Now it seems a bit more normal and not much different from the other high-end restaurants in the area. With that being said, the food is still excellent and probably the best in town. On this night, we decided to have the tasting menu. They no longer list out each course, so you have to rely on the server to explain it to you. Each course was expertly prepared and tasted wonderful. I just miss the old menu and hope they bring it back.

We chose this restaurant to celebrate a recent graduation and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it--quiet, beautiful surroundings, and intimate dining experience. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about the menu and offered wonderful advice. The manager greeted us as well and wanted to make certain our evening was as perfect as it should be. The food was spectacular--and we partook of almost everything on the menu. Delicate, beautifully presented on the plates, and divine. Almost everyone who served us knew about the graduation and offered their congratulation. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the Jacksonville area!
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Cozy restaurant and great food. Perfect portions so you can have a dessert. Taste and presentation of the food were excellent. Since the restaurant is small, one loud table can make it noisy for all diners. It was our anniversary and it was acknowledged by all staff. We also received a lovely dessert with an anniversary wish.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Matthew's has consistently given my wife and I the most memorable evenings. Everything about our visits exceeds our expectations - food, service, drinks (pre-dinner cocktail is always a special part of our evening) and atmoshpere.
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
We took some friends who live in Jacksonville to Matthews for their 40th anniversary. First time for all, and the experience could not have been better. Our server Nick was very helpful and the service was excellent. We all agreed that our meals could not have been any better, and that the steaks were the best we had found in the Jacksonville area. We will return.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Whenever we have a special occasion or even if we want to treat ourselves to a fine dining experience, we head to Matthews. So far, the restaurant has never disappointed us, and we always leave with a feeling of "we'll definitely be back some time soon." So glad to have this high quality restaurant in our neighborhood.

Started the evening with a
Started the evening with a cocktail. The bartender there was one of those guys who leans more towards mixologist than just bartender. We had a couple creative twists on traditional cocktails that were excellent. We had a cheese plate as an appetizer and Matthew's always has a few names on their cheese list that we don't see many other places. We had their bone marrow appetizer, which is hard to find in this town. I had the air dried duck breast. Outstanding. Shared a dessert and a dessert cocktail. Both were good. The only negative was the noise level or just the accoustics. We found ourselves saying "what?" all night long. We couldn't hear each other. The waiter couldn't hear us. It got a little better later in the evning.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was great! Our waitress Sara made sure our every need was taken care of. Great and unique cocktails. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
food and service outstanding. see if you can have Sara as the server.

Fabulous food and impeccable service! If you are in the Jacksonville area, this is a must-go!
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
A solid choice for many years
While a lot of newcomers have come and gone, Matthew's has always been one of the top choices for many years. If you are expecting a gentlemen's steakhouse experience go to Ruth's Chris. But for a truly fine dining experience this is a solid choice.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wine pairings for fun
We did the wine pairing meals and were thoroughly satisfied and entertained. The ceviche, haddock in potato " papillote", and a tenderloin rabbit roll were as exotic as one finds in this town, and all were terrific. There is Matthew's, and then there is the rest.

Exquisite Dining Experience
My husband and I are spoiled by our dining experiences at great restaurants worldwide, and Matthew's absolutely matched the quality of the very finest of restaurants we have visited. The food was divine, and our server Pavel was masterful with his suggestions and descriptions of the food as we were deciding. He also recommended beautiful wines for our meals. We also were treated to a toast of champagne since we were celebrating my husband's birthday, as well as a lovely little dessert at the end. We were so happy with our meal and with the whole experience. We will certainly go back the next time we are in Jacksonville!
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Even a napkin option
The tables were set with white napkins but I was wearing a black dress. Upon seating us, the hostess offered me a black napkin so to avoid lint on my dress. Typical of Matthew's attention to detail.

1st time at Mathew's, not my last!
I was planning a Jacksonville trip on Restaurant.com and found this terrific place. I was very pleased with my entire experience!
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was not impressive at all!
I had high expectations of this place when I found it online as the chef had many rewards and seemed like an amazing place for a romantic dinner which it was however the food was perhaps even lower than average. I was not impressed at all with the food as it didn't taste as something i would go for again. however the place looks very nice and service was awesome.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We look forward to it all year.
Matthew's has become our special anniversary place. The food and service are outstanding.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great dining experience!
First time, business dinner. Outstanding food, ambience for either a romantic evening out or a quite elegant place to conduct business.
Will differently go back.

Great Food, Fantastic Service
My wife and I went here for our anniversary. It was fantastic. The fried olives and lamb were noteworthy. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a special meal with your significant other.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
We celebrated our anniversary last week at Matthew's. Our experience was probably the best we've ever had there. The food, as always, was outstanding in all respects. I believe our server, Sarah, made the difference this time. She was knowledgeable, attentive, and paced our meal in a truly expert manner. A very special time. Thank you.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was a special occasion, celebrating my 60th birthday with my husband and our son who was visiting from London. We shared a cheese plate with great choices selected by our waiter. I was informed approximately 45 minutes after placing my order that my selected entree was unavailable, and then selected the gnocchi-house made rabbit sausage-ragu, which was savory and delicious. My husband selected chicken. My son, the scallops and they both enjoyed their meals and commented on the perfect size of the servings. I was not really impressed with the Lemon Souffle as it was runny. Regardless of the minor imperfections, the service was very nice, the food was tasty and meticulously prepared and presented, and overall a memorable event.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Still the Best
Great food prepared by thoughtful and skilled chefs and served by a well trained and considerate wait staff. Matthew's continues to be at the very top of restaurants in Florida.

Amazing Dinner at Matthews !
Absolutely the best restaurant in Jacksonville.....we thought we were in New York City ! The food and service was that good !!
Ask for vegetarian dishes, and you will get gourmet art vegetarian ! The tasting menu was superb ! Highly recommended !

Best Staff in Jacksonville
Came to Matthew's on a Saturday night for my wifes birthday based on a friends reco. As soon as we walked in we were greeeted with a friendly, smiling face. Even though I mentioned when I booked the reservation we would be celebrating my wifes birthday, the hostess asked us if we were there to celebrate anything special, and made note of our response immediately. Every new interaction with a staff member that night began with "Happy Birthday". Pavel was our server and was incredible. Food was delicious and the staff was very attentive to the dietary restricitions we had. The Staff all sigend a birthday card for my wife and thanked us for coming in before we left. Hands down the best place to eat in the San Marco area I have been to.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
best in town
The menu is always imaginative. Everything is fresh and beautifully prepared. In a class by itself in Jacksonville.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
A pleasant surprise
The meals were delightful. We had the tasting menu which I would defiantly
recommend again. Very eclectic. The kitchen is right in plain sight. Alex the
chef comes over to say hi. He is a "Pacific Rim" culinary genius! Our waiter (Erick?)

Celebrating our 37th wedding anniversary, David made our night with his suggestions from starters And wine, to dessert. Service was excellent, food was to die for and the surrounding were quiet and romantic. We will definitely return and highly recommend Matthews to everyone!

A night out for our Anniversary
We were attending a concert in Jacksonville that evening. We traveled from Savannah, Georgia to attend and wanted to make the night an extra special night. My husband enjoys tasting menus and I found this restaurant close to the Theater. We were surprised we might not be able to have the tasting menu that evening. After checking though, the waiter stated they would accommodate us. Both of us had never had octopus and while the pasta it was in was wonderful, the octopus was different. Also, we both LOVE pork belly and it was also tasty, however, we both stated we would love to have had it seared harder and cooked through more. Overall, the experience and meal was wonderful and we appreciated the extra efforts for our anniversary.

Good, not Great
This being the third time there it wasn't up to the first two visits, particularly with the service. Our waitress was a little confused on some of the dishes and we were NEVER offered any bread. She seemed horrified when informed of this and promised to give the four of us a glass of wine on the house which only one of us received. Nor was any removed from the bill. Our cocktails took a long time to arrive and the mojito was awful. I know this may seem trivial but the first two visits those with black dresses or pants received black napkins. I guess this neat practice has been discontinued, however it was one of those touches that made Matthew's extra special. The souffles were not the same either. Sorry I raved about them.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Back to it old self
Matthew's used to be my favorite restaurant in Jacksonville. Then several visits were disasters with poor service and average food but high prices. I didn't visit Matthew's for months but finally decided to see if it was any better. The old Matthew's is back! Everything from service to food was first rate! Welcome back, Matthew's.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
Loved the food! The atmosphere was a little stuffy and prefer Medures over Matthews. But was worth the experience!
