Can't go wrong :)
This is my absolute favorite place to dine. Every time it is a wonderful experience, without fail. The food is always fresh and delicious, and the servers and owner are always warm and welcoming. This beats the pants off any of the Ethiopian restaurants in NYC. I simply cannot recommend it highly enough!

Excellent Ethiopian, we have been going here for years and its always consistent. A real treat for a first timer. You can eat with your hands. The service is attentive and helpful if you are unsure about some of the dishes. They have sampler plates which can give you a taste of everything. Love this place

Nice change of pace
Good food , good portions. Tight seating. A little loud. Very accommodating staff. No liquor license so BYOB

Shares the meat platter for two. A great choice for your first visit...get a chance to try a few different styles of meat. It also came with your choice of three vegetable. Our favorite meat was the lamb and our favorite vegetable choice was the mushrooms. Great atmosphere. Good choice if you want to try something new and different.

We've been dining at Mesob
We've been dining at Mesob since they opened. We've always had a good experience. It's a hallmark of a good operation that, even years later, the food and service are consistently high quality.

Delicious Ethiopian Food
Despite having a reservation we had to wait a while for our table (over 30 minutes), but it was more than made up for with the excellent food and service. Everything was extremely fresh and very delicious. We can't wait to go back!

Ecclectic Place to go, but worth it
Interesting place to go to eat. Half of the fun is eating with your hands. Must be good with double dipping though. Unless you use silverware, but that takes the fun out of this place. The food is very good and it's worth trying out the sampler platters for a variety of tastes.

Love Mesob! We just went for a pretty quick week day evening meal but me and my friend both enjoyed it. We've been there before but the menu works very easily, easy to try a nice selection and either share or have your own food.

I always love going to Mesob!
I always love going to Mesob! We were originally a party of 6 but had to add 2 more. They were able to accommodate us without issues. Also, even if several of my party were late, Mesob did not make a big deal out of it.
4/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
It was my first experience eating Ethiopian food and I absolutely loved it!!! We ordered two main courses that come with two choices of veggies and it was enough food for at least another person. It was so yammy! I cannot wait to go back!

Well Worth a Visit!
Interesting cuisine, nicely prepared and served in a pleasant ambience at fair prices well worth a visit and repeat business.

Good As Ever
This is one of our favorite neighborhood restaurants. The food is always excellent and service courteous and attentive without ever being intrusive.

It's so refreshing to enjoy a delicious dinner in North Jersey at something other than an Italian restaurant. The food at Mesob is simply delicious. The dishes are refreshingly simple, with just a few ingredients that are expertly prepared and seasoned perfectly. The injera bread is so addicting that I wanted to keep eating it even after I was stuffed! The dining experience at Mesob is very unique by "typical" North-Jersey standards and I cannot recommend it enough!

Wonderful Mother's Day Dinner
Mesob provides excellent service, great food. Waitress guided us into making great choices. Vegan daughter, great options. Owner came by at end of meal and gave the mom at our table a beautiful rose. Nice touch.

Perfectly cooked, fun and healthy!
This neighborhood/destination gem has been my favorite for years. I try Ethiopian wherever I go, and none has ever measured up. The place is spacious, warm and clean. The owner is one of the warmest and charming people you will EVER meet, the same for her waitstaff (mostly family.) The tables and settings are always spotless. The food is healthy - although NOT low in oil be aware - and fun as injera is plate, food and utensil all in one. Carnivores and vegetarians alike will have no trouble with choices same for those preferring lamb or chicken or shrimp. They have fantastic desserts and you MUST leave space and energy for the Ethiopian coffee. Coffee is my passion - I even plan vacations around it - and I drool for this every time.

If you are interested in delicious and unusual food, Mesob is very much worth a try. The wonderful people who work there are an attraction too.

They Get It Right!
Mesob is a gem. Having lived in Washington D.C. for a number of years, I was fortunate to have my pick of many wonderful Adams Morgan, Ethiopian restaurants. Mesob surpasses most and is as good or better, than even the best that D.C. has to offer. Staff is friendly, attentive, knowledgable and stunningly beautiful. A superlative dining experience for all the senses.

Fun with out of town guests
My boyfriend took my Mom and her two sisters to Mesob for lunch while I had to work. The sisters are not food adventurists, at ALL. My boyfriend and Mom are very much down to try anything and have experience doing so. Though I was not there, I can vouch for their continuous talk about how satisfied they were, how great the service was, and how much they would love to go back. I have heard multiple stories about how the staff was friendly about explaining the menu. Bonus: In the heart of the best part of Montclair. P.S. My boyfriend's parents were both born in Ethiopia. This place is tasty AND legit!

Great Ethiopian restaurant with wonderful choices of vegetarian and meat dishes. All the dishes are great and the waitress explain them very well. We have been here many times and would highly recommend it

Relaxing atmosphere and great food!
The brunch for two is well worth it. Food is different from a usual brunch, but that's what makes it fun. It's so nice to try different types of food. The staff is very friendly and makes you feel welcome. Most tables were taken, but the restaurant was still quiet. This was my second time at this restaurant. The last time was for lunch, which was also very good. We got the sampler, so we could try lots of different dishes. I would definitely come more often if I lived closer. I am looking forward to coming back again.
6/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great food experience
The veg dishes we ordered were varied in taste, texture and appearance. We enjoyed the mushrooms, the lentils and the chickpea preparations. The dessert we ordered was overpriced and European! I would definitely go back.

We have been to many Ethiopian restaurants in the States and a couple in Ethiopia - the food at Mesob is by far both the best and most authentic of any that we have been to in the States. The service is also outstanding. This is a place that can give you a true flavor and taste for being halfway around the world.
7/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you havent tried it Mesob a must
We have lived near other Ethepian restaurant neiborhoods in several cities and Mesob is one of the best anywhere. Great food and atmosphere. Byob a hearty red wine (I recommend Malbec, Rioja,or Syrah) that stands up to spices and stong flavors and you'll love this place. Don't forget to try the vegetarian dishes along with a meat dish. You can't go wrong with any of the vegtable dishes - get as many as you can. Family style is on one plate is a must and skip the fork and knife, eat traditional with your hands and injera. Reservation is recommended if you're going Friday or Saturday night.

Not typically a fan, but....
Given a choice I would just as soon have gotten a steak someplace, but my wife wanted Ethiopian. And I was so glad she did. The food was excellent (according to the others in our party "the best they'd ever had"), and the service was really friendly. In addition to our party of four there was a large party of 25+. The open seating area made sure it was not too noisy, and the staff and clientele all made sure everyone was welcome and had a great time.
Now, if my wife wants to go to dinner, I'll probably ask for Ethiopian. But I'll pretend I'm doing her a favor ;)

A great intro to Ethiopian Food!
What a great experience our group of 5 had at this restaurant! We meet to try different nationalities of food, and none of us had ever eaten Ethiopian before but had heard great things about this restaurant. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful in determining what and how much we should order. There is even a placard on the table that explains how to eat the food, and how the bread (that you use for scooping up the food) is made. And the food is so varied and delicious! The restaurant is beautiful, surprisingly it was relatively empty at 7, but by 9 it was packed. Highly recommend this gem!

Excellent as usual
Consistently one of my favorite restaurants...have never been disappointed. Everyone I bring with me always comes back for more!

A Piece of Ethiopian in NJ
Mesob has been a personal favorite since a couple of years. It has all the elements of a restaurant which one craves to return every now and then. Food is simply delicious. Service.... now what do I say.... Feels like you are coming home to a warm and caring environment. Ditti (hope i spelt the name correct) - manager/owner is a soulful lady. Passing along each and every table, chatting up and paying attention on what's missing on the table. Each and every wait staff member is always smiling and inviting.
Beyond the food and service, the most charming thing I find is the fact that Mesob makes you feel the Ethiopian culture right here in NJ. The coffee pot is the must....Salute!!!!

Food Always Good
I've been here twice. The food is always great and the staff friendly. There is always a wait for something though so you have to go there when you aren't planning on being somewhere else on time but it could also be on the plus side because they never try to hurry you out the door like some restaurants do. On this occasion we were trying to make it back to an art opening and missed it because we waited quite a long time to get our check taken care of. But this will not stop me from going back there and recommending it to others.

Unusual and wonderful
Went with my husband and another couple and stayed for four fast hours! Helpful waiter talked us through the sampler and we enjoyed the good and the experience. It's byob and there are no utensils on the table as you are meant to scoop food up with the spongy flat bread, but you can ask for forks!
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fun and Fresh!
My husband and I went on Saturday night for the first time. The waiter was very helpful and we actually let him select for us. The food was freshly prepared and very tasty. Some of the dishes reminded us of lighter, fresher, indian food. We don't like to go for Indian very often although we love it (too much cream and ghee that are included in most dishes we like). This was the perfect place to enjoy food that wasn't rich or heavy but was instead healthy, flavorful, and plentiful. We got a vegetarian sampler and especially loved the Shiro (pureed chickpea) and Dinich Wat (potato). The injera bread was so interesting and delicious -- like a sourdough pancake. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Great experience. Will be back!!
I was looking for something a little different, a low-key, good but not too expensive place to celebrate a recent anniversary so I made a reservation this time. My wife and I had never had Ethiopian before. The service was a bit slow a first but it was somewhat crowded, even for a Thurs night. As first timers, they were very nice in explaining the menu to us and how to eat the food. All the food was nicely spiced and very tasty. Where we had a choice, we ordered the medium spicy dishes (mild, medium, hot) and it was perfect. The medium is on the lower end of the spicy scale. I may order hot next time for a least one or two dishes just to try it out. Overall a great first Ethiopian experience. We will definitely go back to this gem.

My wife, a friend from out of town and I had dinner there on a Friday night, six pack of Rolling Rock and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc in tow. We had a 9:00 reservation on a Friday night and were seated promptly after arriving a few minutes late. Service was nice and attentive but in no way overbearing. Food was delicious. We asked for our dishes to be spicy, which more often than not doesn't end up actually being spicy. Seems like most ethnic restaurants downgrade the heat to suit our assumed unaccustomed Western palates. No such dumbing down here though - the heat was legit! Family style around the huge plate of injera was great! We'll definitely be back!

I always enjoy dining at Mesob
I have been to Mesob many times and the food is excellent!!! I can't bring myself to order one entree so I always get the sampler to get a variety. Who needs a knife and fork when you can dip into all the different tastes. The staff is always so warm and friendly. It's just a pleasure to go there. I suggest reservations.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great! But noisy and busy.
The food was fantastic, such a fun experience to eat in the traditional Ethiopian style! Mesob was very busy and kind of noisy, but still a good experience. The staff seemed stressed and a bit over-worked, but still went above and beyond to meet our needs and make sure we had everything we needed. We had a great time and will definitely be back!

Authentic yet modern Ethiopian
Excellent dishes, comfortable seating -- something for everyone. This visit we asked for the injera bread made with 100% teff (gluten-free). Normally you have to special order it 2 days ahead of time, but they had some already prepared. It was definitely tastier and less bloating than the teff/flour-blended injera. Service is friendly but not always detail-oriented, so double check with your server on specifics like how much you need to order. We ordered the Mesob sampler enough for us 5 adults, but probably should have ordered it for 4. Overall, a wonderful meal. PS: Don't forget to order Ethiopian coffee to cap off the evening. It's fabulous, from the smell of the charred beans to the porcelain cups and saucers in which it is served.
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
I developed a love of Ethiopian Cuisine while living in Washington, D.C. The Adams Morgan neighborhood is chock full of Ethiopian restaurants, one better than the next. Mesob stacks up with the best of them.

Great Ethiopian place.
Went to this restaurant for the first time on a first date. She's a vegetarian and I wanted to find a place that had more to offer than just salad. Having never had Ethiopian cuisine before, I was nervous to see whether she and I would even enjoy it. It was the most delicious thing I've had in a while; spicy, but not too hot, and incredibly flavorful. The atmosphere in the place was good in terms of volume and decor. The service was amazing, and our waitress was very helpful in explaining the menu to us neophytes. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody looking for a great ethnic restaurant.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
All around wonderful experience
From service to appetizer to main course to dessert, this place is a winner. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, willing to make recommendations and explain the different dishes. I dined with a group of four. We ordered the appetizer sampler. For the main course I shared a vegetarian sampler for two with a friend and our husbands shared the meat sampler for two. Although we initially thought there would not be enough food to satisfy our hubbies, we were wrong. The dishes are very tasty and full of meat and veggies - both filling and satisfying. And it was so much fun to eat without utensils - using the injera (a type of crepe like bread) instead - and yes, in some cases just our fingers!!! Great experience!

Unique dining experience
Adventurous diners will love this fantastic Ethiopian place in the heart of downtown Montclair. Great atmosphere, attentive service and fabulous food make it a must go. Try the sampler for 2 if it's your first time. It's BYOB, so bring a hearty red to go with it.

Great food, the kind you don't get every other place. If you enjoy adventure in food, this is one terrific place for that.

Great Ethnic Food
I never had Ethiopian food until I went to Mesob and now it is a place I crave to go! The food is always fantastic and it is a fun experience eating without utensils. The service is good and often I have had the son of the owners/cooks as my server, who is very kind and obviously informative! My only wish is that the lighting was a little better. At many tables it is just too dark.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
The special menu for their 10th anniversary was put together very well, and their desserts had the rigth amount of sweetness. We loved their "shai" tea.The waitresses made you feel welcome and we loved their beautiful Ethiopian dresses. The music was a little loud for my taste but, I understood that this was a celebration. I'll definitely come back .
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
My favorite restaurant
I would eat food from Mesob everyday if I could. It's amazing! Don't hesitate to bring home leftovers. The injera is really tasty heated up the next day.

Their Tenth Anniversary
We went to celebrate their tenth and will be there for the 11th and often in between. Great for and friendly service. They really CARE about what they are doing. Authentic food prepared with pride and love. Remember, you should be eating only with your fingers to enjoy it the most.
