I love this place but really
I love this place but really mourn the discontinuation of the lamb boti kabob tandoori - so I've really cut back in my visits.

We live in Cleveland, OH but would drive to Ann Arbor once a month to eat at Shalimar's. We've had "Indian" food from San Francisco to Hamburg, Germany and a lot of cities in between. We ate it often in the two years we lived in Nairobi. Some were good, and we are not experts, but most were pretenders. Shalimar is real! From the Samosas to the Tandoori dishes, naans and ginger rice pudding, If you like Indian food; go to Shalimar!

Nice Change of Pace
First time experience did not disappoint. Prices were very reasonable, and the cuisine was a welcome change of pace from most restaurants. A unique dining experience.

This place is our go to place anytime we have an anniversary, birthday, anything important. Food is great as always, as was the service.

I've only had their vegetarian dishes, but everything that I have tried has been SO wonderful! Would definitely suggest to vegetarians and non-vegetarians!

My partner and I went to Shalimar for this spring's restaurant week. They had some really unique things on the menu--not the typical curries etc. We had a huge variety of things. We tried both the appetizers, and their fresh cheese was amazing. For the main we shared the Tandoori Shrimp and the chicken dish. They were both great. We ordered each "medium" spice, and it was really pretty mild, so next time we will order it hot. Everything was really fresh and tasty. For dessert I had the carrot pudding, which I loved. He ordered the ice cream. They were out of the fruit flavors so he just got vanilla and chocolate, which was a little disappointing. Out server was a bit awkward, trying too hard to be cool, but very attentive and knowledgable.

Our favorite Indian restaurant
My husband and I are very picky when it comes to Indian food and will only go to Shalimar when cravings hit. It is located right on Main St so I recommend a window seat if you like to people watch.

No, my title is not "original", but that is the only word that comes to mind when I think of Shalimar! The food is impeccable and ambience is awesome! My girlfriend and I went there for the second time last week and neither of us can say enough good things about it.

The food is amazing. It is hands down the best Indian food that I have ever had.

Authentid food, very nice ambience
Shalimar probably serves the best Indian food in town. If there's a better spot, I'd love to know about it. Decor is lovely but not fancy. Tables facing Main Street are fun for people-watching. Service was attentive and helpful. Portions gave you plenty without overdoing it.

Best Indian restaurant around!
Shalimar is the best Indian restaurant in the Metro Detroit are. The food and the service are exceptional!

We've been eating at Shalimar several times a year for 6 years now and have never had a bad meal. They even pay attention to spice-level requests. At other places when I've requested mild, I've gotten either still-too-spicy food or totally tasteless food. Here they bring me delicious, well-spiced dishes that don't burn my (admittedly very sensitive) tongue off. The rest of my family likes their food moderate to spicy, and always get exactly what they request. We can heartily recommend the chicken tikka masala, chicken biryani, lamb vindaloo, chicken saag, veggie mixed appetizers... and more. It's often busy and can be hard to get into, but worth the wait!

The real thing
Never been to India, but the local East Indian people say it's pretty authentic, especially if, as a non-Indian, you ask for your entree "Indian spicy." Great tandoori dishes, and the samosas are the best I've eaten since my days in East Africa, 30 years ago.
