We had dinner--3 of us-- on
We had dinner--3 of us-- on a weeknight; the restaurant was not crowded and while tables on the deck looked inviting, we ate indoors as temps were borderline. We elected to order the from the prix fixe options (appetizer or salad, entre, dessert for $27.99) and had no regrets. Food was very good, well presented, and service was attentive. Wine list a bit on the expensive side. We plan to return and explore the menu. A great neighborhood bistro.

The food and service here
The food and service here are always consistently good. When the weather is nice, it is a treat to sit outside on the patio and enjoy your meal. The servers will not rush you and you can really have a relaxing meal.

delicious French classic cuisine.
delicious French classic cuisine. All four of us were very pleased with the bistro-try the prix-fixe for an outstanding value-you can bring your own wine which I would recommend as the wine list is very small. This is a small place-a made over house-so it is casual--try it. Everything was delicious.

great comfortable patio
Friendly waitress, nice patio, very nice food. This is a favorite neighborhood place for us. Outdoor seating is fully covered so you don't have to worry about an unexpected shower.

"I like the location of the restaurant nestled in a quiet corner of University & Morningside.
The escargot was excellent. The Bordeaux was just the right taste. I definitely would return to try more dishes.
Service was well-timed and friendly. The live music with acoustic guitars should have a speaker so we can hear
the musician better from afar.

Have dined there a number of times, and have never been disappointed.....excellent service, delicious food, and an atmosphere befitting its name

Birthday Lunch at Bistro des Amis
We had a birthday lunch for two friends on Thursday and it was a delightful lunch! The service was impeccable and the food was fabulous! We had a Cuatro Caballos Tannat with our lunch which was also wonderful. I have had lunch and dinner at Bistro des Amis several times and it is my favorite restaurant! The atmosphere is very cozy and wonderful.
Don't change anything!!!

A Bit of Paris in Houston
We discovered Bistro des Amis after a trip to Paris and Normandy last year. The food, atmosphere and staff made us feel like were back in France. We have spent several special occasions including the Mother's Day Brunch at Bistro des Amis. Each time has been marvelous and we will continue to make the trek for Clute to Houston to enjoy this lovely little bistro. It is amazing to be greeted and recognized by the staff when we arrive!

Great romantic dinner spot!
Great spot for a romantic dinner, very friendly staff and good food. Noise level can get a little loud and tables are very close together, largest group that could be seated "comfortably" is 4. Large outdoor patio with ceiling fans but it was far too hot out the day we dined there! I do not recommend for small children. Recommend reservations for anytime after 5-6 pm.

Fine Bistro Fare in the Village
The fish was very fresh and not overcooked. The French wines are reasonably priced and well suited for the bistro dishes. Service was welcoming but chaotic. Noise level was high but made for a festive evening on a hot summer night

Great local spot
Exactly what we expected - casual french restaurant with classic french food
6/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
Not what we expected
Overall it is a fine place to eat. Our reservation was at 7:30PM and we were promptly seated. Seating is tight, as you find in France, so quiet conversation is difficult. Given the close quarters and the high temps that day, it was a little warm inside. Food was very good and the price was reasonable. Wine list was more limited than we expected. Would go back and try it again for lunch. They have a nice out door seating area - for the 6 months of the year in Houston one can do that.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love it, but ...
I've eaten here a number of times and really like it, though parking is a big problem.
Also, last two times the food was way too salty.

Nice French Option
There's not a lot of French dining options in Houston, so this is a nice change of pace. I've eaten here several times and haven't haven't had a bad experience. There are a three vegetarian options . . . okay, not very Frency, but nice to have. Also several seafood options for those who don't like to eat beef or chicken. It is a little cramped when crowded and the tables are a little small, but it's generally a quiet place to eat.
As with most of the Rice Village, parking is a problem. The restaurant doesn't have a parking lot but does offer valet service.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Neighborhood gem to be sure, but worth a visit from anywhere in Houston. The special twist is Basque-influenced dishes. The small staff was very upbeat in this converted 1940s wood framed house. The mood was fresh, not pretentious. Nothing we tried was so-so; our table was roundly pleased with their orders. Oh, our waiter moved to Houston from Paris just 3 months ago.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fourth or fifth time to visit. Always friendly. Food is always great and at a very reasonable price. BYO wine with minimal corking fee.

Overall just an outstanding
Overall just an outstanding experience. Zollie, our waiter, was fantastic, funny, engaged, and very astute to the fun and energy level of our party of 4. He helped us pick out 2 different types of wine for our individual pallets and made recommendations for the food as well. He was a fantastic waiter!!
The food was magnificent. The escargot and steak were outstanding, but the creme brulee was to die for. It will speak for itself and needs no hype.
Matt, the owner, not me, stopped by for the better part of 15 minutes and chatted with our table very openly and was extremely receptive to all forms of feedback. This impressed our table very much and we all agreed that this sealed the deal on our making plans to return.

Third time at this Neighborhood Gem
The food is great and very authentic French! The fact you can take your own Wine, is a plus for my husband. NIce for small groups/Casual ambience
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you love French food - ENJOY!
Although we have seen it many times, we never dined here. We found out the restaurant is a BYOB - which we love and why we decided to try it out. We took very dear friends and we all were thoroughly pleased. The escargot was wonderful - uniquely served in a crock with a pastry top and the perfect amount of garlic & herbs. Two of us enjoyed the beef medallions & the other two enjoyed the duck. The service (Eric) was terrific! It is a small restaurant, so a lot of tables - a little crowded, but still not cramped. The only way to park is to valet! We will be back many times to come! Truly a 'gem'!

Houston Restaurant Weeks
We went for Restaurant Weeks, and it was excellent. The food was good and the service great. I apologize for not remembering the gentleman's name, but we had the Hungarian waiter and he was a joy.

Charming neighbourhood bistro
Love this place for its European flavour and interesting food. I am vegetarian and appreciate that their are veggie options!

Fabulous, cozy, friendly French
Fabulous, cozy, friendly French restaurant. Food is great as is the service. We'll definitely come back again!
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent for Restaurant Weeks
Other than being out of two desserts, the menu was quite appetizing and had something for just about anyone. I had the "ham and cheese" (don't remember the french) and it was scrumptious!
8/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was good overall, but a bit on the expensive side. A great place for a special date/special occasion.
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
cozy rice village french restaurant
dining area is small but the noise level is quiet. very parisian feeling & the food is delicious. I would definitely come again & the parking is a bit difficult but there is valet or street parking. great place!

Delicious French Food
I treated my boyfriend out to a Houston Restaurant Weeks dinner here. I took advantage of the BYOB and brought a bottle of Pinot Noir. The server was wonderful, and our reservation was early enough that we get to see the place get more and more packed after 7:00. The food tastes wonderful. We had never had French cuisine before, and it was a delicious adventure.
This is, for sure, a place we'll be going back to. Now, if only parking was better. However, there is a $4.00 valet to take advantage of.

first visit - won't be the last!
food was superb, as was service. It's loud, but in an energetic way. Outdoors dining looks great (too hot for this visit). will definitely come back.

Outstanding! First time to dine here. Will happily return over and over even though we drive over 50 miles round about.

Took advantage of Houston Restaurant Week to try different restaurants in the area. We ordered the salad and the mushroom in puffed pastry. The latter was great! Salad is salad. For the entree the lamb and the steak. Both were great but my husband didnt fully like the steak so much. He felt the quality of steak isnt up to par. He felt its 4/5 rate. The dessert was fruit tart and creme brûlée
Brûlée could have been better of the sugar on top was a bit thicker to have that crunch when u eat it. The tart was great! Wine suggested was terrific. The service was superb! The ambience brings back memories traveling in Europe esp the country side. We will go back again to try other dishes....

Food and Staff Great
Went for restaurant week. The food was good, wine ok, waiter was excellent. Nice little gem for the area and would definitely recommend/go back.

Bistro Des Amis - HRW
Had a great experience for Houston's restaurant week. The food options were fantastic, with amazing French Onion Soup and Duck Confit. On the weekends, there is a live French duo that plays acoustic guitar and takes requests for popular French songs. The service was impeccable. We brought our own bottle of wine, with a corking fee of $9, and they were very generous at keeping our wine cooled and our glasses full.

Food: 8, Service: 8
One of our absolute favorite spots for dinner. We love bringing our own wine, which we usually share with Matt (the owner) or Kayla (the manager). The duck reigns supreme. Moist and flavorful, not greasy, it is always a treat. We couple it with the ratatouille gratin -- and what a terrific meal it is! The ratatouille is spectacular -- just the right amount of tomato sauce and fresh vegetables. This time, we ordered the nutella crepes for dessert. They were tasty, but a bit sweeter than we anticipated. It did not keep us from eating it, however. There are several new servers, and it will take a little while for them to "get with the program." Our server, Cedric, was charming, and tried very hard to make our evening delightful!

My go-to place for a nice meal
Bistros des Amis is my favorite place for good food, good wine, and a friendly and informal atmosphere. Good friends introduced me to the place a year ago. We all enjoyed dinner there so much that we unanimously decided to return together for lunch the very next day. The owner, Matt, and the manager, Kayla, have managed to create in Houston the taste and ambiance of a French village bistro, with fresh ingredients, yummy sauces to complement the seasonal meat, fish, and vegetable entrees, and perfectly sized portions. The lamb shank in reduced red wine sauce and the filet mignon with Roquefort sauce are both delicious. You can BYOB (corking fee $8.50) but the wine list is great and the prices are very reasonable.

I always get great service and wonderful food at a very reasonable price here.

Great Place for Conversation
I chose Bistro des Amis for a nice dinner with visiting friends from my high school days. I was looking for good food and a quiet environment so that my friends and I would be able to talk. The food and service were very good, and we were able to easily hear each other. We had a great time.
We have been here before with my in-laws who are in the 80s. It's a great place for us to eat with them because they are hard of hearing, so we don't have to shout at them in order to have a conversation.
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a delightful little place for a wonderful dining experience. The food is very good, the service superb, and the attention paid to diners exceptional.

French bistro ambience
We enjoyed our lunch at Bistro des Amies. We both had an appetizer and crepes and dessert. The only negative thing I could say is that the bread they served was fresh but not special--it tasted like a grocery store baguette, and there were only 4 small slices. Some of the other local French restaurants serve a wonderful crusty "home made" warm peasant loaf. This is one of the treats you expect in a 5 star experience.

We really enjoyed the atmosphere
We really enjoyed the atmosphere and great food at this neighborhood gem. It was an extremely pleasant place to celebrate our anniversary.

A Nice Change for Houston
There aren't many French-leaning restaurants in Houston, which makes this one a nice change. Any criticism I have is the lack of change in their menu over the last year or so. The food is very good but it's still the same offerings they've had since I started going there. The deck is heated on cold nights, which is nice to enjoy the food outside.
The wine offering is okay - offering a 1/2 carafe is nice for two to share.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
the bistro has the look and feel of being in France! We enjoyed the dishes, picked to go with wines from Bordeaux (this was a wine dinner). Excellent choices and pairings! This isn't a noisy restaurant - we could hear each other speaking in low tones - and that is such a plus! It would make a good "date night"!

Nice Neighborhood French Restaurant
I have been to Bistro des Amis twice. I enjoyed my first visit more than my second visit, primarily due to better service and availability of menu items and wine my first visit. On my most recent visit, my first several choices of wine were not available and I finally had to ask what was available. To conclude the evening, I also wanted profiteroles for dessert, but was informed that they were also not available. The food was quite good on both of my visits. I enjoyed escargot as an appetizer. The first time I visited, I had one of the restaurant's signature dishes, beef bourguignon, while on the most recent, I had the tuna special. Although I enjoyed the tuna, I think the beef bourguignon I had my first visit was better.

American Thanksgiving/French Bistro
We didn't have family in town for Thanksgiving this year so we decided to go out. When we learned Bistro des Amis was doing an American Thanksgiving we jumped at the chance. The Turkey was mouth-watering and came with all of the fixins. The pumpkin and pecan pies were out of this world!
11/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great Thanksgiving dinner
Our family of 4 celebrated our Thanksgiving dinner here, and it was a delicious, traditional American dinner. We were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the experience.

Bistro des Amis is a convenient
Bistro des Amis is a convenient thanksgiving locale where making reservations and reviewing on line menu is very easy. The décor is simple and has the flavor of an intimate but not overwhelming or crowded dining space. They have streamlined operations apparently with less of the hectic and more crowded nature of the space. The improvement is in the taste of the food and proportions served while the downside is the service with not quite enough attention to filling your glass and making you feel you can get what is needed in timely fashion with that little needed contact. Overall for a very American tradition done well for out of towner's knowing they have to spend a little more for that day it is a good place to go and it is recommended.

Early Anniversary is a Smash Hit
For French cuisine and a great overall dining experience our first choice in Houston is Bistro des Amis. From Matt the owner to the wonderful and excellent wait staff. The Bistro is a West U gem that we love every visit.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is an excellent french bistro (not to be confused with a high end french restaurant). Food and service were both excellent. The red snapper was perfectly cooked with a savory sauce. Atmosphere was great - cultured and friendly. Next visit to NYC will definitely come again.
We were staying at a hotel in Midtown and found this restaurant easy to get to via subway, with a station a short block away. Quicker than a taxi which has to negotiate surface traffic.

Was very enjoyable plus enjoyed
Was very enjoyable plus enjoyed being able to go to a nice restaurant that is BYOB.

Nice French restaurant
We enjoyed dining here. The food was excellent. We went on a day too cold to eat outside, which left us at a very cramped table next to two large parties. It was strange that the owner decided to put us there when there was a wide open table for two in front of the live music (single man on a guitar). Otherwise, it was quite nice. The pre fixe menu was great, and many choices for wine. They also give you the option to bring your own wine for a small corkage fee or take your wine home if you cant finish the one you buy.

Just keeps getting better
Every time I go the food and dessert is amazing and just gets better each time
