Excellent dining experience
We enjoyed the innovative menu choices. The portobello mushroom appetizer was delicious as was the attractively-presented iceberg lettuce salad, fried chicken and a wonderful cherry cobbler.

SauceTastic! Great food & drinks!
I enjoyed eating at this restaurant. The drinks were great - Strawberry Mojito & Cosmo. Appetizers: highly recommend the Portabello Mushroom Fries & Deviled Eggs with Bacon on top Delicious. Main Entree: Vegetarian Phyllo wrap - great flavors. dessert - PB&J ice cream - Amazing as well. The server was really knowledgeable and nice and made great recommendations as well as giving us a great explanation of things we had questions about like the Putin. I would recommend this place - it was just a bit too hot for me. We were seated towards the back - nice ambiance but I wish the place had A/C for hot days. Great for small or big groups - they are very accommodating.

This was my third pre-performance visit to Sauce and it did not disappoint.
Cocktails are inventive and tasty, wine list well curated for mid-level dining.
Sauce on my salmon and its salad bed was a bit heavy on bacon grease- tasty but too much of a good thing.
Friends hanger steaks looked awesome! Very ample portions all round as well. You won't leave hungry.
Guinness milkshake could have used a bit more G to give it some bite but it was tasty. Cobbler was only okay.
Sauce is a reliable go-to locale in the Gough Gulch area. Give it a shot.

Tasty Comfort Food
Three of us had a great dinner at Sauce. All of the dishes had wonderful flavors and the main courses were larger than expected, leaving enough to have left-overs the next day. I can't believe we've never tried this restaurant before! We will be back!

was not very pleased to be
was not very pleased to be seated in the backroom which was very dark a bit loud and just gave off an overall much less pleasing vibe than the front of the restaurant. apart from that though food and service were both quite good.

Yummy in your tummy!
Sauce is a quiet little gem with only delightful bites on their menu. They serve a good drink with a ton of options! Their servers are friendly and have good suggestions for all the choices on the menu. Don't skip the tater tots! Great spot before or after theater, easy to walk to Davies or the Opera House. Enjoy!

My wife and I needed a restaurant
My wife and I needed a restaurant near Oak St and found this place. I had the braised ribs. They were cooked to perfection. The Au Gratin potatoes were awesome. I ordered the A3 wine, which was only $8 for a glass and it was terrific. My wife got a salad. Can't remember the name but it had shaved corn in it. She was really happy. Overall great place to go for a quick meal.

Good option for civic center
We've eaten here several times over the past year and have enjoyed the food, drinks, and wine each time. They have many choices in small plates, fairly priced entrees, and a nice wine list. Three of our group ordered entrees, fried chicken, pork chop, and steak. All were delicious, but the pork chop was definitely one of the best (and biggest!) I've ever seen. We shared crab wontons as an appetizer, and I made a meal of oysters on the half shell, tasty coconut shrimp, and an ample salad with peaches. Everything was cooked to perfection. Also, we really enjoy the bartender and, on this visit, our server, Nicole, fun and knowledgeable. A very enjoyable experience.

been a while
Hadn't been to Sauce in a few years. Was happy to find the food and service to be as good as I remembered. Will be back!

We thorougly enjoyed everything about our evening at Sauce- especially the food, which was fabulous. We were a party of four, and we each ordered different appetizers, entrees and desserts. There wasn't one dish that we didn't love- a great meal and a great evening!

Good overall quality service
Good overall quality service starting from reservation, food & accommodation at the restaurant!:) I'd highly recommend this place for large group dining.

Comfort food done with a fun
Comfort food done with a fun flair. We started with bacon-wrapped figs that were packed with flavor. Also had the ham hock tater tots, how could you go wrong with those? Then the hangar steak with a surprisingly good side salad (rocket?). Many interesting menu options. Drinks good too. Service was just fair to midland, our server was in no hurry to get to us and clearly not concerned about us actually liking it there; she got the order in and the food on the table but that's about all. Still go back though!

Always great imaginative take
Always great imaginative take on "regular" food and the staff is always incredibly nice and efficient! Nicole is the best!

A Night at The Theatre
My girlfriends and I were in SF to see a show at the Orpheum and were looking for a nice place with great food within walking distance to the theatre. We decided on sauce and loved it. Our waitress was a delight. She recommended a few dishes and we tried them all and were not disappointed. The mushroom fries were out of this world. The hangar steak was so good my friend is bringing her husband back for it. The ravioli and the corn and heirloom tomato salad were both delicious. Our waitress suggested a few wines and they nicely paired with our food. The walk to the theatre was just a few blocks. Just enough to recap our delicious meal at Sauce.

We dined at Sauce before heading
We dined at Sauce before heading to a show at the Orpheum on a Sat evening (6:30pm). Parking was easy and free (meters stop at 6pm) on the street just past the front door. You may not be so lucky but it definitely worked for us.
The place is small/intimate and we were there unfashionably early since we were heading to an 8pm show time. We wound up enjoying drinks, dinner, and espressos so much, we had to race to get over to the Orpheum in time!
The place is very relaxed, the servers very hip, and the food very tasty/imaginative. My gf had cod, I had salmon, both were perfect. Heirloom tomato and corn salad for me, wedge salad for her. Again, ALL good.
Happy to recommend to other Open Table diners!

Check Please Indeed!
New in town, I watched "Check Please" and the review of "Sauce". I took all the suggestions from the show's guest and had a great experience at "Sauce". However, the best part was the warm, professional, over-the-top service provided by Nichole.

For a special night out...
I picked this place for a first date. I've found the Hayes Valley to be a romantic spot for a night out. Our experience at Sauce was perfect! Such a cute space with amazing food. They even sat us down at the best table by the open French side doors on a warm evening. The dishes were presented beautifully. We wanted to try everything on the menu. It's a classy take on comfort food. I highly recommend this place for a date night or special occasion near the Opera / Symphony. And the service was wonderful!

excellent food, however, the restaurant does not have air conditioning so it was almost unbearable eating there, for our 2nd time. I really like sauce, go when its cool outside. the tall server (lady) was quite cold and not hospitable, avoid her.

Loved it. Would go back for sure. Food and service were great. The iceberg salad was excellent.

My favorite spot!
Food was awesome!! There were so many parties of two the waitress was a little swamped, so service became a little slow.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was great. Service good. Small and quiet--meaning the acoustics were very good.
9/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Perfect before the symphony
Delicious food, good wine, convenient location to the Symphony, Opera, Ballet and traveling Broadway venues.
9/11/2013 12:00:00 AM

I was there for dinner with a large group. I had a delicious salad followed by a tomato bisque soup that was thickened with rice. It was too thick and heavy for me but good. It also came with filo-dough sandwiches filled with some sort of creamy truffle creation inside -- yummy but too filling for me to eat all of them.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
after symphony eating
Located near civic center and open late this is a great place to grab an after theatre meal. Full bar, friendly service and fine food.
9/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
There were good vegetarian
There were good vegetarian options, which made me very happy. The food was beautifully presented. My friend and I were able to hear each other comfortably, as there wasn't too much noise.

Great preOpera spot
We wanted a quick bite before the Opera. This was a perfect spot the food was good and came out quickly.

This is one of my favorite
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Civic Center area. It is close to all the music venues which is a real plus. Really liked the menu-wonderful appetizer selection. The pisco sours were over the top-compliments to the mixologist!!
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Been there three times and
Been there three times and it's always a good (not great) experience. My steak was a little overcooked, and it took quite a while to get our dessert (we were heading to the symphony and were almost late), but otherwise the staff was friendly and the food (especially the cocktails) was quite good.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM

this is a restaurant that really cares...wonderful service, delicious food, we will be back in several weeks..This is going to be our 'go to' restaurant for opera/symphony season when we are in Hayes Valley practically every Saturday night!
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, sleep over
Food was good. Try the smores for dessert! You won't regret it! If you get a chance, sleep over (boutique hotel above the restaurant is called Sleep Over Sauce).

Always a winner!
Sauce: Gough is always a winner! I could eat here once a week and never bore of the menu selections. And what selections they are....Tomato Bisque, Ham Hock 'Tater Tots, Hangar Steak and the mini-Meatloaf!
In the many years of visiting Sauce: Gough, there has never been a food or service glitch. All these things add up to why it is one of my San Francisco favorites!

Great restaurant -
Our food was special and great.
We were late due to traffic and had to make a show. The service was great and we made the show in plenty of time.
We definitely are going back. Sause was recommended by a friend.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
nice place and staff
Friendly, well-executed American food and a laid-back ambiance. Fried duck wontons were great with the spicy applesauce-based sauce.

What a nice find.
My wife & I found Sauce online. It sounded promising, we needed a place to eat before the show and they had seats open early. Decor is understated but tasteful. The menu, well suited for splitting though pretty meat heavy. The incredibly, warm, accomidating staff offered that they could leave the meat out of anything we wanted also suggestting that they could bring us half orders so we could try more. We had 1/2 order each of deviled eggs and chicken sliders, we split the vegetarian phyllo, mac & cheese and spinach/kale side. It was all fresh and well prepared. The wine list is small but wonderful and emphasized sustainable practices. Service was efficient but not rushed. Attentive but not intrusive. They got us out on time. We'd go back
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wrong food served
Considered ravioli, but ordered salmon. Got ravioli. Returned with no problem, but friends almost finished when salmon arrived fishy and over-done. No charge but no offer for any consolation. Had been many times but won't be back.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
I have been to Sauce several times and it always impresses. Great food, cocktails, wine list. I hosted a group before the Symphony and they were very careful to make sure we finished in time to walk over. A terrific place...definitely recommended!
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
we like the smaller plates for sharing(2 of us) and for the variety. the items change around as well as speicals. we enjoy the food a lot.
10/30/2013 5:00:00 PM
This was our third time at Sauce. I suppose the best recommendation i can offer is as we were walking to our show we were discussing how nice our dinner was and wondering why we don't come more often. "Yeah - let's put this into our rotation," I said, meaning the places we regularly go.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
A resturant for a conversation
We chose Sauce for dinner because we had SF Symphony tickets and because the reviews said the noise level was moderate. It's more and more difficult to find a place to dine and have a conversation and Sauce, even with a noisy bar and high ceilings was perfect for chatting. The spirit list is interesting . We had an artisan gin over ice , lovely and floral.
We split a delicious salad with figs and asian pear and the short ribs. I can't imagine eating a whole order of the short ribs by myself. The short ribs were en croute and very tender. The dish could have used a bit more gravy and so could our delicious side of poutine, very cheesy but kind of , all three dishes had interesting flavors. Thoughtful service.

Pleasant new find
I often use OpenTable in places I do not live, or where I haven't lived in a really long time (like SF). When a colleague's suggestion in Hayes Valley couldn't take a large group on a Friday night I looked for alternatives via OpenTable and found this place. Likely what I saw on the site, I booked a table. We arrived a bit late and with an additional person but were accommodated graciously and immediately. One top of that the service was attentive and friendly. The food was American comfort but with a twist and quite yummy (and affordable). Everyone one in our large party agreed it was a great find, and would be back.

Good food and friendly people
Our table was ready right on time, and they accommodated my request for a window table. We decided to share a few of the social plates and a soup, which were all wonderful. The sausage bread with bacon fondue was a total hit with my boyfriend, and I loved their tomato bisque. We would happily go back.

Great Late Night
This is a recent discovery. I've been there three times in three months. Great late night dining - so good that I'm ready to try it in prime time! Hard to find a place in this provincial town that serves good food late at night with service and a smile - you can count them on one hand and right now this is my number one.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
My sister and I wanted something simple and healthy before a jazz concert. Sauce was perfect! We had scrumptious mushroom soup and crab endive appetizer. We had a relaxing dinner in plenty of time to walk to the jazz center. $40 including tip.
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
love that brussel sprout salad!
We finally got there in the fall when the famous brussel sprout salad was back on the menu! It is sweet and tangy and not at all cabbage-y.
We always like this place after the matinees at the opera. Our only complaint is the music or the TV coming from the bar. It can distract from a really nice, peaceful meal.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good, reliable food, top service
Ideal for a pre-performance dinner (it's just a 5 minute walk from the Opera and Symphony Hall). Food is always good and service is very fast and friendly. Don't sit too close to the windows / doors in the winter. It can be drafty.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great Pre-Performance Dining
Food was well prepared and tasty, taking comfort foods and adding a new twist. The short ribs done Wellington style were excellent and the portion so large, I took half home. Starters are pricey but large and I'd recommend sharing them.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great for Groups!
We had a great time at Sauce. We were a group of 8 and they accommodated our party very well. They food was excellent just like always & the desserts are so amazing. The waitress was great and got us out quickly so we could get to the opera.
Thanks again. I highly recommend Sauce.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Overall great meal
From social plate (portobello mushroom fries) to soup (mushroom bisque) and salad (pear salad) and then on to the entrees ( Hanger Steak and the Wellington dish), and finally Chocolate Ice Cream, all was great. Only criticism was reduction sauce on Wellington entree was a little too salty for my tastes. Otherwise a great dining experience all around (including service).
