Love, Love, Love
I am never disappointed in this restaurant!!! They have a wonderfully unique menu, service is usually spectacular and the outdoor patio up top is so fun in the summer. This continues to be one of my favorites in Pittsburgh!

Food is always outstanding
Food is always outstanding but the service is sometimes spotty and the noise levels high.

Nice dinner at Tamari
This was our first time dining at Tamari and we'll definitely return. My husband and I enjoyed sharing the ceviche, empanadas and fried rice which were all tasty and uniquely presented. Both the Sashimi platter and Tamari roll were delicious largely due to the fact that the fish was very fresh. The Thai iced tea creme brulee for dessert didn't disappoint and a pleasant way to finish the meal. All the employees were pleasant and the service was outstanding. They definitely aim to please. Recommending this place to our friends.

Something differently delicious
Went to Tamari for Restaurant Week last year, and its taken us too long to venture back. My dining partner and I shared some "Shareables" - the mussels and the fried rice. Both were unique and delicious!! I had a Butler St. Mule cocktail and it was so refreshing. Everyone should try Tamari - if you haven't already! It has something for everyone.

I live in Lawrenceville, but had never been to Tamari. I was really missing out! I had lunch with a friend and it was amazing! I loved the lunch menu where I could chose from a bunch of different things all on one plate, so I got to try a lot of different things. And all were wonderful. Everything was delicious, nicely served by two pleasant women, and we weren't rushed.

Fun even at 5:30
We had an early reservation and even then the place was jumping with after-work clientele. It's more fun to sample a lot of little plates than to be bogged down or disappointed with a main meal. Definately going back. Lobster mac n' cheese rocks.

Excellent food and service
The title of the review says it all. Really liked almost everything we ordered. Didn't like the mussels though, found it too fishy and they had some lentils in it that weren't properly cooked. We've been there a couple of times and ordered many dishes, so other than that one dish, everything else we ordered was excellent.
The restaurant even followed up on a little request from my end to bring in a dessert with a candle at the end of our meal -- it was my wirfe's b'day. I added the request through my open table reservation and didn't need to bring it up a second time. I thought that was great.

Maki with a twist
The eclectic and thoughtfully prepared and presented appetizers and main dinner Makis are each special taste treats. We especially like the lamb empanadas and shrimp tacos while the tuna Maki with avacado called TNT was a soft balance of flavored and texture as the main course. Try the lobster tempora as well. The wine list is modest but balances the flavors of the foods quite well. Call for reservations even on weekdays.

Fantastic food and service
The food is exciting-you can tell the chefs love what they are doing. They combine flavors and textures in ways I have never experienced before. This is "fusion" cuisine at its best. I also have to laud the service at Tamari. The servers are professional, well informed, and know how to pace a meal. Our favorite server is Sara. She knows how to make an evening special, balancing attentiveness with letting us relax and enjoy our meal. This is our favorite place in Pittsburgh!

This is a great, fun place. We sat at the kitchen bar and watched the cooks and sushi chefs do their jobs. The executive chef was there checking every dish as it went out. The menu was large and the prices were extremely moderate for the quality. My companion and I shared roughly 6-7 dishes, including a huge sushi special, and we were stuffed. The wine list and cocktail menu are nice and the food was very high quality and extremely tasty. Everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. The only dish I wasn't nuts about was the chicken skewer. It struck me as a little dry and was a little sparse on the sauce. My Pittsburgh friend goes to Tamari often, and I look forward to going back.

We live in the Lawrenceville neighborhood and we have been to Tamari many times since they opened. And I am pleased to report that Tamari is still serving great food. And, as always, Allen is a great host.
7/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went to Tamari for our anniversary dinner. While the atmosphere wasnt romantic, it was trendy, clean and nice. The service was very good. The server was knowledgable and attentive. The noise level was low.
Now to the good part - the food! We ordered a bunch of small plates and shared.
Koean tenderloin - my favorite
Spicy quinoa fried rice
Spicy tuna rolll
Chai tea creme brulee
A bottle of red wine
Grand total - 75.00
And unlike some of the other reviews, I did not leave hungry. I was quite satisfied. I would definitely return!!!! I am glad we chose Tamari over Cure. :)
Thank you, Tamari, for a great experience!

Evening with friends
Tamari is consistently very good with interesting menu choices, variety to please most palates and creative opportunities to share. It is a wonderful group experience. When the weather permits, consider the upper outside deck. It provides a flavor of Pittsburgh with an engaging ambiance. We much enjoyed the special - 2 tapas and one maki. Tamari in Lawrenceville is only getting better with time.

Loved Tamari, everything about it. Can't wait to go back!

Delicious innovative food
We enjoyed our brunch. The only problem was that all the food came at pretty much the same time. As the air conditioner blew at the food, it cooled down the food pretty quickly. Most of the food was cold by the time we ate it. It would have been better warm. Maybe the waiter could suggest staggering the food for this reason.
7/27/2013 5:00:00 PM
We really enjoyed our meal. However, it's a bit loud and it was difficult to have a conversation. We were seated inside, upstairs.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Arrived on time but no seating at bar.
I thought the portions could have been alot larger.
I ordered two apps and dinner, was still hungry.
Nice place though.

First time at Tamari and I loved it. The food was great and the service was friendly. The noise level upstairs got very loud but we had a really nice night.

Asian with flare!
Tamari's food continues to exceed expectations. Each bite is loaded with flavor and never disappoints.
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
The quality of food and its presentation are superb. We ate several fish dishes and they were each very fresh and amazingly delicious. The good service is worth noting as well.

Great Sushi with Great Service
Tamari has amazing food. The only reason that I did not give 5 stars is because I felt that the Restaurant week special wasn't as exceptional as I feel the rest of the menu typically is.

Love this place
I have dined at Tamari on a regular basis and this place never fails to deliver. The Executive Chef, Roger, is a genius and his support team is consistently fantastic. I've never had a bad meal there. Ever. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for fine dining and unique quinine. The small plate format allows you to try the entire menu over several trips. Great concept. Superb execution. This place is a winner!

We were seated on the rooftop deck - great view! Sharing the small plates provided the opportunity to taste so many great dishes. Don't miss the fish tacos and save room for dessert. We loved the spicy chocolate torte.

Nothing to complain about. Great place for great food and a good time.

Amazing food, unimaginable taste!
I gave this restaurant a shot, and when I stepped out of the restaurant I was really satisfied with the food and service, I even gave my waiter a 30% tip thing that I don't do quite often. The taste is great with a mix of Asian and Latin flavors, definitely worth trying and definitely worth every penny.

Pittsburgh is Lucky
I dined here on a business trip after a friend recommended it to me and wow was I blown away! The food is creative, beautiful, and delicious. The atmosphere is hip but without massive pretension, and the service was excellent. I recommend sitting at the chef's counter if you can so you can at least look longingly at the dishes you didn't order this time but will come back for in the future. I have tried other Asian-Latin fusion places before and always felt a bit ambivalent about my experiences but Tamari really nails it. Superb flavors, colorful plates, and a nice attention to detail. I can't wait to return!

Excellent Food, Average Service
The food here was amazing. Unfortunately, despite noting that it was our first time with our reservation, we were giving zero guidance on what the establishment was all about. After asking for help with the menu, we were told which items were popular and what tapas are. (My guest had never had them.) Still, I was left hoping to learn more about the restaurant's story and how this fusion came to be. It was VERY loud and because I was visiting from the DC area, the vibrance was welcomed and made the scene feel fast paced. At the end of the evening the server seemed less busy and more earnest with her recommendations and suggestions. It was also much easier to hear the excellent dish descriptions the food runners were bringing.

Great food, great service, love, love, love. I've been here multiple times and will be back.

Interesting place in Lawrenceville
Tarmari is just far enough out of downtown, East Liberty and Shadyside to make it attractive to those who want to venture a bit afield to eat out. The service and food are great. Its a small plates place, but the portions are ample. Needs a better wine list, but otherwise is great value.
10/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great one again
This was my second time at Tamari and loved as much as the first time. My husband doesn't usually like tapas because they aren't filling enough for him, but the portions are definitely generous (and delicious)!
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM

Great food, prompt service, knowledgeable wait staff and clean kitchen.

A definite must
If you enjoy the concept of tapas, Tamari delivers well with a mix of asian and latin offerings. Their menu is creative, very tasty and on-trend. They do not stray into the "too exotic" and their prices are reasonable and on par for the high quality of food offered. Every table is taken- reservations are a must. Service was beyond attentive, which is a big concern when ordering multiple small plates.

Tamari Unique Flavors
Went for our anniversary. Every dish had a new taste. The server and I think the manager or owner were very attentive without being overbearing and the food came out quick. Seems like allot of people were just having apps and drinks but we strapped on a feed bag and loved everything. You can tell it's a very well run place.

if you haven't been to tamari, go!
the food is sensational.
the lunchtime bento box is the freshest, most interesting, creative and delicious meal ever.
and the lobster mac and cheese is out of this world.
service was great, too.
it was too cool to eat outside at this time of year, but i could see sitting out on their front patio and really enjoying it.

I've dined here many times and it had always been a fantastic experience. Amazing food, service & drinks I've also ordered take out & their sushi is the best in the city!

Finally tried it!
After hearing so many of my friends rave about Tamari, my partner and I and another couple finally got to go last Saturday. Great food - it was everything I hoped for. And it was decadent even though I currently on a gluten-free restriction. So glad we went and can't wait to go back!

Innovative menu-great food
Interesting mix of mex and japan, for the most part well-executed and in a nice environment. First time there and lots of interesting things we will want to try on return.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
This was the best sushi I've had since moving to Pittsburgh. The maitre'd was great, but our waitress was just so-so.
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Out of town guests love it.
When looking for a spot to take out-of-town guests, we chose Tamari. The eclectic menu appealed to everyone. We ordered a first round of small plates to share. We then ordered a second round to sample a few more of the delicious and creative combinations of flavors. The service was friendly and well paced. It was a younger crowd compared to many area restaurants which was refreshing although a bit loud.

When in Pittsburgh, stop by TAMARI
Sunday brunch was perfect. The host was helpful in recommending several wonderful plates. Try the price-fix option for a great combination during Sunday brunch. Parking may be tight during busy hours. Will be back to TAMARI the next visit to Pit.

Love the Bento Box for Lunch
It was cold so we didn't sit outside but they have a nice outside patio area when weather is nice.
Also easy to get to on Butler Street.

I don't know why I waited so long to try Tamari. It was so good. The food was delicious and out of the ordinary. I was very pleased with every small plate I got. The fish tacos, the pork cheek quesedillas, the sushi rolls...The service was on point and the atmosphere was great! Will be back for sure. Thanks!

Fun first date
Both my date and I had been there before, but that did not create any lull in conversation. Quite the opposite in fact, we both wanted to try a few new things and were able to exchange recommendations on the wines. We were seated upstairs with a good view and the service was fantastic despite it being a bit busy. Wait staff was very knowledgable and polite. Finally, the food was amazing latin zest to asian meals makes a fantastic combination and honestly took away from the view. Overall a great night!

We went with some friends on Black Friday. Our friends were stuck at work and in traffic and didn't arrive till almost an hour after our reservation. My wife and I were asked if we wanted to wait for the rest of our group at the bar or sit down. We sat down, from this poit everything was spectacular, the service was great we ordered small plates we had two of them while waiting. No rush from the server great food presented beautifully. We will definitely be back. I can understand whit it's hard to get in.

My wife and I enjoy world travel and dining very much. Tamari in Pittsburgh was the most outstanding meal we have had in a long time in the US. We would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys excellent world class food .
