I came to Mateo to have lunch
I came to Mateo to have lunch with my Aunt for her birthday. The food was outstanding and, as my Aunt is French, she thoroughly enjoyed both the menu and the food we both had. The service was only fair. I ordered coffee as we sat down and had to remind the waiter as he broughtour lunchesh that I still wanted the coffee. The waiter basically left us alone yet a bit more attention would've been nice. It was a two hour lunch because it took a long time to get a dessert ordered and then get the waiter's attention to get our bill. Thank goodness we had the time to dine slowly...

Mateo - un festin merveilleux
I was looking for an affordable French restaurant in the Boulder/Denver area, and Mateo ended up being a solid solution. The food was quite delicious, especially the appetizers. Loved the Cepes! Was expecting a zoo-like scene as Mateo is on Pearl Street in Boulder, but it was a bit away from the walking mall which made it more quiet while still providing some of the people watching pleasure of Boulder. Service was outstanding! Will definitely go back sometime to try some of the other options on the menu!

Good choice for dinner in Boulder
Excellent dinner in Boulder in a town where there is a lot of competition. We booked a dinner on a Sunday evening. Very quiet, so we had our choice of tables and very attentive service. Food was very good. Excellent pate for appetizers, the table really enjoyed the hand-made pasta, and the burger was first rate. Worth a visit, or a return visit.

We had a great meal ....the chicken pâté with pear compote was lovely. The salads were good. We had three entrees...a lamb special, roasted chicken and a pork chop with polenta. All were good portions and really delicious. All in all a great meal.

Always a pleasure
This is the third time we've eaten here. I would eat here more often but we live in NYC and come to Boulder to visit our son who's at CU. The place has a nice vibe, the food's great, and there's always something on the menu to pique our selective appetites. Go--you'll like it.

top marks all around
Great food, outstanding service, lively crowd. Only drawback was the noise level when all the tables filled up, which seems like something management should pay attention to.

Pleasantly surprised to find
Pleasantly surprised to find they have outdoor dining. Perfect for a nice spring/summer evening!

love Mateo. Food is great and the restaurant ambiance is very charming.

Good food, tiny portions
I was pleasingly surprised by the quality of the food, but was equally surprised (and not in a good way) at the portion size, which would have been appropriate for a small child. If the prices were scaled down to accommodate the small portions, I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it. But the prices were high for the amount of food that you get, so to walk away without feeling hungry or eating an entire loaf of bread, you'd have to order a lot of food, which would rack up the $$$ significantly. However, they didn't skimp on dessert potions, which is an area where they actually could scale back.

Mateo is one of our favorite restaurants in Boulder, and this is a town with some serious competition. The menu is based on traditional bistro fare, but is elevated by the use of fresh ingredients and excellent preparation. The specials are always worth checking out - the morel and asparagus appetizer we had this time was fantastic. The service is professional without being stuffy and the wine list is well thought out, with a variety of moderately priced bottles. The dining room can get a bit noisy when it is busy, but if the weather is nice the patio is a great alternative.
5/31/2013 4:00:00 PM
My husband decided to treat me to my favorite mussels in the world. These mussels are my gold standard for mussels and I have yet to find ones that can compete. Our waiter was friendly and professional. We love this restaurant and will be coming back to enjoy a summer evening on the patio!!

Mateo is clearly one of the best restaurants in the Denver/Boulder area. The menu choices are varied and exquisite, the service is exemplary and the prices are reasonable. Although widely-known and appreciated by selective restaurant patrons, it should be brought to the attention of a wider audience. This restaurant definitely should be on your list of venues for special occasions, or just as a standby when you want a really good meal.

I went with a friend and it was really nice. It was the first time he had ever been to a nice restaurant and they didn't make him seem out of place. The food is fabulous!

Multiple servers, no one knowing what the other had just asked or done.
Great food....nice casual place to share a meal.
My wine was not available...upgrade at no cost delta..nice touch.

Consistently good food
Always great favors at Mateo. Been going there for years and they still deliver a great meal. The wine List is terrific and the wait staff are friendly and knowledgable

This place is truly amazing.
This place is truly amazing.
I would recommend it to anyone and everyone who loves consistently great food, an awesome wine list, and a staff that is great company while you dine.

Great food, service was just so so.
The Scallop salad was great, so was the pork chop. But service was lacking. We seemed almost forgotten at times.

The food was quite good. I
The food was quite good. I had the salmon and it was delicious. I had 2 complaints: the noise level is quite high (and the restaurant wasn't even full), and it seemed that we waited a long time for our main course.
7/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
We found the menu to offer lots of options, yet stay pretty rooted in Southern French. Where it deviates from Provencal, the offerings are unpretentious - Hamburger and flatiron steak. Fries are good. I had the duck confit and it was outstanding. We also loved the mixed salad we had. My wife had a pretty good steak. We were both luke warm on the mussels appetizer, but it was easily made up for by the dessert. Good wine list. Excellent service.

Excellent Food, Friendly Atmosphere
This was our second visit, the first was for First Bite in 2011, and this time for my birthday. The plateau provençal charcuterie & artisanal cheeses was an excellent start. We especially liked the subtle earthy pate and the velvety pear compote. - not cloying in the slightest. The duck and quail were crispy and moist and the vegetables done just right. The wine recommendation was a perfect match, and desert was a brilliant surprise - tarte tatin! Loved it! We will go back again...
7/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Will Be Back
Had a very enjoyable dinner there. Exemplary cocktails, wonderful meal. Wish the acoustics were a bit less severe, but nothing's perfect, I suppose. We will definitely be back.

Continued good food & good service
We have visited Mateo several times in the last few months, and keep coming back for the food and the atmosphere. The servers are capable and pleasant. My only complaint is that the manager or owner - not sure which - stops by many of the tables to inquire and chat, but he has never once stopped at our table. Its become somewhat offputting.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food - can b noisy
Went for HH which is why it was so noisy. We noticed after HH the noise level went down a little. I prefer brunch which is on Sat or Sun and dinner. The food is excellent. One of my favorite dining in Boulder.
8/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
rooftop fan Ugh!!
Mateo food and service has always been very good. Their in house pate is worth the visit alone. Specials are always delightful. When crowded expect the inside chatter to be very loud. Outside patio also leaves a lot to be desired. The fan noise on the roof makes for a unfriendly place to have a quiet glass of wine and visit with friends.
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Mateo's is a wonderful restaurant.
Mateo's is a wonderful restaurant. I've been before and it never fails to deliver. Delicious food, attentive service, friendly staff. All at very reasonable prices.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Noise level made it impossible to talk without yelling. Have always enjoyed Mateo, especially in early evening, but this time noise level was horrendous and not sure we will return.

Gets better all the time....
OK - what more could anyone wish for than excellent food served and presented well by attentive staff with a wide and varied selection of wines to wash it all down with? Well how about a wonderfully restrained - yet chic - decor? How about about a cozy atmosphere close to but sufficiently removed form the hustle and bustle of Down-Town BLDR? How about the feeling of being welcomed and the unabashed sense that your wishes and cares are paramount? How about the expansive and extensive list of drinks form the bubblies to the cocktails to the highly recommended and very knowledgeable wine list? Well that my friend is Mateo. A true neighborhood gem and well worth a visit. And... if that is still not good enough for you? Then please: stay home.

First time to this restaurant for dinner and it was a lovely experience. Everything was prepared perfectly, the service was great and the drink were tasty. Would definitely go back again soon, try this place out for yourself I'm sure you'll like it. The menu online does not represent current food as they change their menu regularly.

Loved the Poulet Frites
I was told to order the burger, which is supposed to be delicious. But I saw the Poulet & Frites on the menu and had to inquire. The waiter said it was his favorite. And it was darn good!

Great Nicoise Salad
I always enjoy the Nicoise Salad here. It's fresh and flavorful.

First Time Experience Very Good
My wife went here to celebrate my 72nd birthday. We have been wanting to try out Mateo and finally did. I am beginning to like the places on east Pearl much more. Parking is easier, not as crowded, and several enjoyable places to dine
Enjoyed Mateo very much. It is loud, sort of like 1010 Brassiere, but in a good fashion. Food was great, service was good, our wait staff was pretty busy so the drinks were a bit late, but that's okay.
I will be returning soon. Another pleasant place to visit.
9/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
I had to laugh at the category description for noise level. I love this restaurant and eat there relatively often. But the noise is too much. I would only go there with one other person because it is too loud to really enjoy being there with 4.

Mateo: the only way to go
Mateo has become our go-to romantic date night spot. The happy hour is affordable for those of us in our early twenties, and the food never disappoints. A suggestion is to order the Muscles and Mateo burger and split it along with the bread and butter they bring out. Have a glass of wine or two and enjoy an evening on the porch.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had a great dinner at Mateo.
Had a great dinner at Mateo. Everything we had was delicious and incredibly full of flavor. The mussels were the best I ever had... especially the broth. I gobbled up the tomoto bisque and the corn risotto was fabulous. Overall, top ratings for the food.
The restaurant is loud and seats are tightly packed. It makes for a lively environment but conversation is a bit difficult.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good was awesome - loved the casual vibe in spite of being loud.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Mateo food and service is always great and consistent. The ingredients are generally local and delicious. A go to favorite every time.
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Mateo is a terrific French Provencale restaurant on the east end (yes, east end) of Pearl Street. We started our meal with the appetizer plateau which satisfied the four of us - - a little something for everyone. Good wine list, mostly French wines. Dinner menu had four additional specials (two soups, two entrees) which were excellent. The only drawback was the fact that the table were so jammed into the space that the noise level was very high. Even the waiter had to move around the table to hear our order. Once the mad rush was over and fewer people we left in the restaurant it made for a wonderful (and more peaceful) ending to our meal (two fabulous chocolate desserts).
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a wonderful early dinner at Mateo's this week. Everything about our evening was superb! The special of the night was a fig stuffed quail which the waiter got dreamy eyed when he recommended it. My husband had this dish and it was outstanding. My mushroom risotto was the best I have had. Excellent dinner!
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I had a date night recently and Mateo was amazing! The food was excellent and the service was very friendly.

If Service matched Food?
The restaurant, which I have been to many times, had excellent food. The waiting staff was clumsy, disoriented and altered in the prime responsible waiter even though the restaurant was virtually empty. Please be careful with the degree of waiter turnover thta don't know your restaurant well.

High Caliber Cuisine
Extremely well prepared food. Service needs a little work but overall we will be returning.

Fine dining in Boulder
My 2nd visit here.
The food was outstanding. My wife had the Lobster Ravioli. She was gushing. She is an excellent cook, and her opinion ranks high with me.
I had a very tasty mushroom risotto. Starters were good too.
I only gave them 3 stars for service because my Bloody Mary and my wife's glass of wine never showed until we were almost done with our starters. Not a big deal, but since I'm doing this, I might as well cover the bases honestly.
Oh, the dessert you must have are the Profiteroles: superb!
We have just returned from 3 months in Europe and this meal compares favorably with anything I had there......and I know where to eat.
All around; a very good dining experience in Boulder.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
The restaurant was full which made it very noisy and difficult to talk. I would be unlikely to go there again on a Thursday night
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great first bite dinner selection. Our waitress Amanda was spot-on and had fabulous recommendations for wine service as well.

Great First Bite Boulder experience
2 friends and I visited to try the First Bite Boulder menu- 3 courses for $26. It was great! The tomato bisque appetizer was delicious. A goat cheese topped crostini nicely complemented the acidity of the tomato. For the entree, I ordered a lamb ragout- It was perfect! There was homemade tagliatelle pasta, cooked perfectly, topped with lamb sausage and a spicier tomato sauce. For dessert, we had a chocolate terrine. It was kind of like a fudge, but a little less sweet. Delicious! The alcoholic drinks were a little more on the expensive side, though they did have a nice Beaujolais that was reasonably priced. The service was good, but they did have to ask who ordered which dish for every course.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
We visit Boulder once every year. Our usual restaurant was booked so we decided to try Mateo. Great choice. The food was outstanding--perfectly seasoned with creative sides. The venison was excellent. The wine steward was helpful as was our waiter. Friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Love the Lobster
The lobster ravioli was amazing and the wine was paired up just right. Mateo is our favorite spot in Boulder.

Very French Bistro
Reminds one of being in Paris - the food is great, and the wines were nice too. All our entrees were really good. Didn't try desert.
