Nice to be able to split a large Sunday prime rib dinner, as it was plenty for two people.

Great service, elegant feel
A few friends joined me here for a pre-theatre dinner. The service was perfect".not rushed but very attentive. I started with a Lemon Drop cocktail that was lovely. Crab cakes, ahi tuna and salads were selected, and we finished with the peach cobbler. I recommend saving room AND sharing that dessert. The portions were generous!
Will definitely go back. It is one of the few places I've eaten lately where the music or the room wasn't irritatingly loud. It was actually peaceful and quiet!

Great place for special event
I took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner. The Grill has a great menu selection and wine list! I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to take someone here for an anniversary dinner or other special occasion with a significant other. Nice ambiance, dimly lit, and pretty quiet, too.

I received a gift certificate for the restaurant and we decided to use it on my birthday. Had never eaten there and had an overall very nice dinner - nice ambience and very good food -- BUT expensive, so would only go there for a special occasion. We shared a crab cake appetizer which had a delicious sauce, shared the mixed greens salad which was excellent (really good dressing). I had the petite filet mignon with bordelaise - very flavorfull, tender and cooked to perfection and the sauce was wonderful but would have liked a little more of it. My husband had the special - Chilean sea bass with pinapple-mango sauce and he loved it. The servers were friendly and attentive.

the Vegetarian at the Steak House
notable wine menu gets me there, but what has me coming back is the staff, especially the Manager, Philippe. My friend had the chicken and the Grill made me a delicious pasta dish with seasonable vegetables.

Great food...excellent service.
Great food...excellent service. We were celebrating a wedding anniversary and it was a lovely place to celebrate.

One of my favorites.
I come regularly to this restaurant and always have a positive experience. The food is delicious and the service is friendly and expert.

This has been a favorite spot to come back to on that special occasion. As usual it NEVER DISAPPOINTS us and we will continue to return on that special occasion

Grill on the Alley
Awesome experience. We are never disappointed when we dine here. It's pricey but well worth it. The steaks are phenomenal and the service is the absure best you will find anywhere.

My long time favorite
Always a pleasure to dine here. The finest of food always prepared satisfying the highest expectations. Parking is about the only downside issue . . . Staff are always friendly and professional -- they know how to ensure they facilitate your dining experience. Selection or variety of food makes it so anybody can find a favorite, especially those dishes they never get at home!

Is it possible to request a specific table when I make a reservation? We changed tables once due to noise and distraction of food
delivery, etc. However, the second table was not much less distracting. It was the first table as you walk in the restaurant. We
love the food, service and people at The Grille but would prefer a table in a quieter setting.

Best steaks in Town
We celebrated a friend's birthday at the Grill and really loved it. The meal began with calamari and a sampler of hummus. Both were delicious. For the entrees, three of us had the filet mignon which melted in our mouths. One of our diners had the grilled vegetable plate with its very generous portion. The service was excellent. Our two servers made excellent suggestions and accommodated menu modifications. We found the noise level a bit too high, but not outrageous. We'll definitely return for a special occasion dinner.

This was a pleasant experience, but very pricey . I had a lobster soup that was absolutely awesome. The service was wonderful.

Mom's HOT DATE Birthday Weekend!
Mom's children and grandchildren planned, connived getting Mom/Grandma to hang out for her birthday weekend at the Fairmont Hotel:
We booked a Fairmont Suite and we booked a reservation at The Fairmont Grill! Overall, Mim/Grandma had an awesome, impressive, memorable weekend!

We dine at the Grill about twice a year. It is an expensive night out but the food, the ambience and the service is outstanding. We started the evening with cocktails, a ginger pear for her and a Jamesons double for me. Michael was our waiter. Normally, they do team service but Michael was alone this night. He's a good looking waiter with a surprising booming voice (think a young Blair Underwood sounding like Seth Rogen). He recommended the Onion Rings as an hors d'oeuvre (excellent). She thought we would get five and we got 12. She ordered the Filet Mignon (medium rare) with a baked potato while I had the Filet Roquefort (rare) and a bottle of Guinness. All cooked to perfection.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everyone loved what they ordered. The filet mignon with melted cheese on top was amazing.

We went here for my husband's birthday and made a note to ourselves that we have to come back more often because we forgot how great it is. Everything from my lobster/butter lettuce salad to the amuse to the AMAZING short ribs was expertly prepared. My husband got the 12 ounce filet oscar and practically licked the plate. I even broke my gluten-fast to have some delicious warm, crusty sour dough bread. They also have the best wine list in the South Bay.
7/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food and service
The Filet Mignon was perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth. The service staff was excellent. A great place for a special occassion.

Sloppy Sunday Service
Love your restaurant - the waiter this time was a clutz. Only told us you were out of something AFTER we ordered the entree. Duh. And then - said desert crumble was one raspberry - served it as apple - and NEVER said a thing - until we mentioned it and THEN he said - oh yes I was wrong about that. Duh. To his (your) credit took it off the menu. He also brought the wrong wine we ordered. Exceedingly pleasant - just a poor waiter. So we have been here enough times we just wrote this one off - food was excellent. I guess the second string waiters work on Sunday?

Instead of going to one of the old stand by restaurants for this special dinner, I wanted to take my husband to a place that we have want to try and I did. The Grill on the Ally was wonderful!! The food was great, we weren't rushed , the wait staff was great always keeping our water glasses full. I would recommand this restaurant to anyone wanting great food and wanting to try a new place.
7/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Quiet. Good food. Great service.
I've been to the Grill on the Alley many times for drinks and dessert at the bar, but this was my first time at the restaurant itself. The mood is very much what you'd expect for a classy restaurant: dimly lit, attentive service, and a wine list that goes for days. We were promptly seated at a booth and could not hear any adjacent table, which made it feel like we were there alone. Great for a romantic dinner or to celebrate a special occasion. We started with the tuna tartare, which was lovely. The filet was perfectly cooked and the garlic spinach mashed potatoes were outstanding. I had the special salmon, which was simply cooked, but extremely tasty, especially with the heirloom tomatoes. We will definitely be back!

The Grill on the Alley
Service: Impeccable. Very attentive wait staff, friendly and professional without being overbearing.
Food: Veal Tomahawk Chop without question best ever. They serve this with a heavy steak knife, but a plastic knife would be more adequate (but maybe a bit pretentious), the meat was grilled perfectly and has a smoky quality and succulent and juicy inside, more tender than a filet mignon. Served with a blueberry sauce that is delicate and slightly sweet but not cloyingly sweet like a lot of sauces elsewhere. Scallops done to perfection, perfectly seared and med rare on the inside like they should be. ..Peach Souffle makes me think of what heaven would be like, it is truly a religious experience. Kudos to everyone at the Grill on the Alley!

Nice place for Birthday Dinner
Sometimes it's nice to go somewhere a bit more special of special occasions. The relaxed and elegant atmosphere at the Grill is a good choice. The dining room is not too quiet and not too loud (unless you get a table in the aisle way - yuck).
The food was mainly pretty good but I felt my Caesar salad was a bit tasteless. However, the scallops, spinach, filet mignon and potatoes we enjoyed at the table were very yummy.
Oh - and the ginger-pear cocktail was delish too!

After having our son at college in Santa Clara and now living up there with his new wife, This restaurant has always been a go to place for great food and great service. We love it. There are really very many places to eat in San Jose but we know this particular one has always been a restaurant we choose to enjoy each other's company and some terrific food as well. Will go back for sure.

I made reservations two weeks in advance only to have to change them to a later time. The Grill was very accomodating. We were immediately greeted and seated followed by a visit from our server, David. Right off the bat we were impressed with his level of service. The specials were inticinv and I ended up getting a Chilean Seabass and my BF had the pepper steak. Both were delicious! The wine recommendation was spot on as well. We settle on the vanilla bean creme brulee which my BF ate EVERY bite. It even came with a candle. Overall it was a fantastic experience and we will be back to request David!

Great food and ambience (expensive)
The best place for steaks in the Bay area. Good wine pairing.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
We've been dining here since before "the turn of the century". Everything, repeat, everything has been consistently excellent. We try other 'hot spots', but time and again revert to our favorite, The Grill on the Alley
9/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
I went there for dinner after reading all of the great reviews. The table service was great and they really made you feel welcome. My friend and I ordered the bone in rib eye which was really tasty, however, my friend's piece of meat had a lot of sinew and fat which made it hard to eat. When the staff came by to pick up the plate and noticed the 1/2 eaten rib-eye he asked what happened and we told them. This escalated to our head waiter and then to the manager who graciously informed us that they took the rib-eye off of our bill and wanted to offer us a free desert... which we declined, so they comped our corkage free instead. AMAZING service. Carl - the manager - and our waiter Chris were awesome! We will be back!

2nd Time Around...
It was a good while since the first time I ate there with family, but the 2nd time around, it was great. From walking in and speaking to the hostess, to the attentive servers to the delicious seasonal Bone-in Rib Eye, the experience was fantastic. I highly recommend this place and order a dish from their Seasonal Menu.

Everything about our experience
Everything about our experience was excellent. An alarm had gone off in the Fairmont (the attached hotel) so it was a bit loud at first, but that was at no fault of the restaurant's and resolved quickly. I especially enjoyed the loaded mac and cheese. My friend had selected the crab cakes which were full of meat and some of the best she'd ever eaten.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Happy Hour!
Came early as we were going to a 7 pm movie and were able to catch the Happy Hour in the bar. There HH rocks, one of the best I ever been to and I've been to a lot. Had the Kobe burger which was just excellent and the wife had the reuben sliders which she loved. Honestly the portions were so much that we could have split one of our meals. Also, the bartenders know how to make adult drinks.

Favorite Place in Downtown San Jose
The Grill on the Alley never disappoints. We dined there Saturday night with friends from Portland and could not have been happier with our choice. Sean, the waiter, was attentive, but not smothering. He was able to accommodate our "double glass" approach to the wines we brought for dinner...wanting to drink both simultaneously for comparison sake. The dinner special he recommended was terrific: Filet Mignon Oscar with a choice of crab or lobster. The beef, as usual, was cooked to perfection, and the whole dish was delish! One of the things that I love is that they never overcook the veggies...always fresh and crisp-tender. Their entire staff is professional and welcoming...always a treat!

One of the best in the South Bay
The Grill is one of the best high end dining places in the South Bay. The food, service, and beauty of the restaurant are all outstanding making this the perfect place for a special, elegant celebration. The standout food items were the lobster bisque, souffles, and prime rib (huge!). The cocktails are also fabulous if you want to come just for drinks and apps in the bar.

My bone-in rib eye was absolutely fantastic. My wife's Romano encrusted filet was not that great. We both agreed that the Romano cheese detracted from the overall flavor of the beef. Service was excellent.

Great Service and Food
I ordered the 16 oz Prime New York Steak and could not finish all of it. It was cooked to perfection and topped with the added requested mushrooms which were delicious. Cream of spinach was also delicious as a side. My wife ordered the Cobb Salad. It too was very good. We enjoyed the service and I noticed, we didn't have to wait for the waiter to give us our bill. He was very busy but the Busboy had his back. The Busboy removed our dishes boxed the leftovers and asked if there was any thing else we would like including the desert menu. We were stuffed and he returned in a few minutes with the bill. The waiter did a flyby just to make sure everything was OK with his arms loaded with someone else's meal. It was a very enjoyable experience.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
My date had the Scallops. I had the New York Pepper Steak. I win. She ended up eating half of my dish. Perfectly cooked medium rare. Deliciousness.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, great service – pricey!
The Grill on the Alley lived up to its reputation as a high-end Silicon valley eatery on a recent visit. It has a very "movers-and-shakers" kind of old-money gentleman's club ambiance, and the prices to match.
Service was attentive, but sometimes a bit slow in coming. The quality of the food just misses five stars due to a dry, overcooked – but potentially quite tasty, baked bacon and Brussels sprouts appetizer (which, to their credit, they deleted from the bill after we commented on it), but our entrees were very good (though the sauce on my bacon-wrapped filet mignon was overly sweet, stealing attention from a perfectly-cooked filet).
One shocker – the price of two cocktails would have bought a bottle of the premium Scotch we ordered!
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
This place was amazing!
We stayed one night at the Fairmont in San Jose because we were going to a show at the SAP Center. We made a reservation at the Grill on the Alley and were we impressed. My husband, 15 year old daughter and I all completely enjoyed our dinner. It is a little on the higher price range. We didn't have much time before the show, but would have loved to stay longer and enjoy the ambience.

Great service don't like the price
The service at the Alley is fabulous. I took my daughter in law for her birthday and the staff was ready and waiting with special additions and Happy Birthday! That means they really read my comments when booking through open table. The quality of the food is awesome and the portions were pretty large. I would prefer smaller portions and included options for less price.
All in all this is a great special occasion place!
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Went during lunch
Place was pretty empty, which is the only reason why I did not rate it higher. Have been to many Grills in other cities. This is is very consistent and a good option for a higher end (i.e. expensive) meal.
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
This restaurant has long been our favorite special occasion location. It never fails to deliver impeccable service and amazing food. The steaks here are incredible and always done to perfection. Pretty much every table is a booth so you have plenty of privacy for a business conversation or a romantic evening. The kids menu has plenty of selection.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Truly excellent steaks, sides, bar
My wife and I both had the petite filet mignon, dry, and agreed it was some of the best steak we've had. Truly great. Her Cosmopolitan made with Hendricks gin and my Sidecar were perfect. The mac & cheese with bacon and mushrooms was terrific. (I was worried the mushrooms might not work, but the texture was just right, so they actually added to the dish.) The baked potato came with butter, sour cream, and real crumbled bacon, and was very good. We shared a simple house salad with blue cheese dressing, which was fine. (My wife liked it exactly as it was; I felt it could have used a bit more blue cheese.) The service was great. I don't know if the preceding does the place justice, given that this is my new favorite restaurant! We'll be back!
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Didn't quite like being seated next to the kitchen, but everything else was okay.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
we have gone to the grill
we have gone to the grill for Thanksgiving for 3 years since my Mom died…everything has always been perfect. My father hadn't gone to a restaurant with out my mom in 50 years…. it is stressful for him…he is completely at ease and talkative at the the grill.. the best for my dad
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
Impeccable food and service
They have a large, diverse menu. The wait staff was super attentive and helpful. The food was out of this world! The best Yukon mashed potatoe and Mac & cheese you will ever have!!! Expensive, but well worth it for a special occasion.

My Favorite San Jose Restaurant
My wife and I came to The Grill for a holiday dinner together. The bone-in ribeye was fantastic. Tender, juicy and very flavorful. My wife was very happy with the seared Arctic char. The service is attentive without being annoying. My only complaint was being charged $8.50 for a bottle of Pelligrino sparkling water. I understand it's an expensive restaurant but that's pretty ridiculous.
