The hostess was so nice and understanding when I made the reservation for the wrong time. The staff was helpful and polite, and the food was amazing. I am definitely going back.

The Mermaid Inn was good but
The Mermaid Inn was good but far from great. Four of us dined for lunch. The Shrimp Cocktail was four limp shrimp. They were out of two listed beer choices. Shrimp salad was nothing extra. The shrimp were sliced in half lengthwise. Im not a fan of this. I guess its to make it appear there are more shrimp than there actually were. Catfish was pretty good, but nothing left one's palate feel like they had a great dish. Chocolate pudding at the end of the meal (complimntary) was a nice touch and it was quite good and smooth. Hadnt had choc pudding in years and it really satidfied. Coffee was served cold! You can do better for a lunch choice and they should do better. Eh.

One of the best values in Manhattan
Unfortunately I usually work until 6:30-7pm every night so I very rarely get to this place in time to enjoy their tremendous happy hour. Consistently fresh oysters for only $1 is pretty much the primary reason to come here. I've had several items on the menu, the Lobster roll is decent, but Luke's lobster crushes it for only half the price. The Skate was good, though not expertly cooked. I ate all of it nonetheless. Stick with the Oysters and appetizers and just eat a bunch of them Tapas style and you and your fellow diners will be very happy.

I have been here a few times now and I have to say its always a solid choice. They have great food, great service and lovely outdoor seating. it is just very well run and always a solid choice.

Another Great Night at the Mermaid
This is one of my favorite places in the East Village and our latest visit didn't disappoint. We were a part of five and the setting was a bit cramped in the barroom near the front. (I do prefer to sit in the country room in the back.)
We started with a nice variety of East coast oysters. I enjoyed the Skate and my wife sampled the Branzino. Other members of our party enjoyed lobster salad and various other seafood treats. As always, the food was perfectly prepared and delicious. And the cocktails were brilliant. The service staff here are extremely helpful and well informed.

Merits repeat visits
Our second visit to the Mermaid Inn did not disappoint. Their menu hasn't changed in over a year, and as we recalled so well what we had last time, we made great pains to choose something different, and we were still pleased. The skate, catfish, octopus, lobster, mini clam bake, and fish tacos therefore all come highly recommended! High-quality fresh ingredients are always used well here. No dessert menu, but cute chocolate cups are served free of charge to everyone after their meal. We still haven't tried the oysters, though, so we'll have to come back :)

Lovely birthday dinner
My two friends and I went to celebrate my birthday at the Mermaid Inn in the East Village. A few minutes later, we ran into three more friends, and the staff was friendly and helpful in accommodating them and allowing them to join us. I had one of the best crab cakes I've ever had, and my friends also made some great choices -- the lobster sandwich and catfish were particularly good. The cocktails are also delicious (and strong!). The setting is lovely and we really enjoyed the first officially warm night of 2013.

Mermaid Inn is wonderful
I had a thoroughly enjoyable lunch on Memorial Day. The food was exemplary, along with the wait staff, oysters, drinks, and on and on. I highly recommend this restaurant!
5/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the food and the oysters. My only issue is that my server was unable to describe the different oysters to me. The patio in the back was quaint and beautiful. I will be back.

We had a lovely anniversary dinner which we truly enjoyed although we had hoped to sit outside in the garden. It was a very very warm evening so we opted for the AC in the rear dining room. Bad decision. Unfortunately, the cozy room's sound level is nearly unbearable if you have any sensitivity to noise. Some find it "energetic" but we will return only when we can dine outside and be able to talk without shouting. Everything else about the Mermaid was a delight.

Really enjoyed dinner at the Mermaid Inn. Loved the little garden in the back and the lively atmosphere inside. Service was excellent - fish very fresh and delicious. Had the mini clambake for starters - very cute presentation and catch of the day. Complimentary chocolate pudding for dessert was perfect! Already recommended it to friends.

Seafood and rose outdoor
Perfect place for seafood and rose!
the only thing is half of the clams were meh... but the shrimp are amazing (seriously 4 shrimp for $15 or so???), the tuna crudo is wow! And the seating is perfect, service really rocked.
A good gem, on the expensive side so do not go if you are starving!
The complimentary chocolate pudding is a good sweet final touch...

Best seafood in the east village
There are not enough words to discuss how much my boyfriend and I love this place. Everything from the buttered rolls and oysters to the blackened fish and lobster rolls are AMAZING. They have the best wine and the service is great. Our favorite restaurant to visit.
6/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sat outside on a Wed night. 6:15, restaurant was already lively. Had oysters, calamari salad, octopus app, trout, all delicious. lovely combinations of flavors. Staff was great - knowledgable and friendly, but unobtrusive - had to be out by a certain time to make a show - they timed everything perfectly. will go again soon.
6/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
The oysters were so fresh they tasted like it just came out of the ocean. The service was especially notable...as I hate anything with mayo or suspect has mayo even though the kitchen was closed they sent out another plate. Then I thought the slaw still had mayo so I wouldn't eat it. The waitstaff and management was amazing doing everything they could to make us happy and accommodate. PS I'm usually not that difficult! Kudos to the kitchen staff, waitstaff and the management there. Class Act!
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was a hot, humid evening in NYC. Only fresh oysters and a cool cocktail would do the trick. Mermaid Inn's oysters were scrumptious, sweet and fresh. The service was fabulous. We will be back ..... All summer!!
6/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
The lobster roll was pretty
The lobster roll was pretty good except the bread was too tough/thick. It overpowered the lobster. The house rolls were amazing. That's the bread that should accompany the lobster on the lobster roll. The ambiance is nice. Service is really good.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
great attentive service and really delicious food. oysters. wow. great drinks. can get loud.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
The seafood offered is of high quality. The freshness is there, as proven in the shellfish starters, clams and oysters. A limited but satisfying selection of east and west coast oysters.
The entrees highlighted the fish, not over powering or overly seasoned or sauced.
All in all, very enjoyable, in a comfortable setting, with attentive but not overly intrusive service. A professionally well thought out restaurant.

The food was good. Terrible
The food was good. Terrible service. The waitress missed our orders twice a row for the night. First we ordered appetizer and entree. After we had our appetizer, the waitress came around and kept asking us about if we want to order some entree, assuming she thinks we are not ordering enough; we insisted that we are ok.. After 30 minutes of waitiing, we then realized she forgot our entree order. Since we are starving by then and saw the portion of the food, we decided to order extra entree. The first entree came and went. We waited again for second entree.. We waited for a good 20 minutes and cancelled our second entree, paid our bill and left.

Celebrated 26 years of marriage and loved the service and the food. Just terrific. Their upper west side location is equally excellent. The happy hour sliders are scrumptious as well.

Consistent Neighborhood Seafood Gem
I have no idea why, because I live three doors down from The Mermaid, it took me over a year to finally eat here but now I've been twice in the past 3 weeks. They have a ton of patio space and a nice little backyard area for dining. The inside room is well designed and has a great beachy, nautical vibe to it. The happy hour's great, the dinner's are great and you know exactly what you're going to get when you dine here.
It's not as trendy as Luke's Lobsters or Red Hook Lobster Pound but from now on, when I want a lobster roll, this is where I'm coming.
8/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Happy hour is great.
Oysters for happy hour. Food and service is excellent. Very loud inside.

Amazing Seafood Experience
We loved all the food we got and the wine, which was a Pinot Blanc from South Africa--very reasonably priced and perfect with our meal. We shared everything --6 oysters (3 Montauk and 3 West Coast), the tuna crudo with jalapenos, and a shrimp cocktail to start. We then moved on to sharing a crab cake and grilled octopus salad as our main. Everything was delicious, fresh and kept me wanting to return as soon as possible.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Came here for my birthday and our table was ready as soon as we arrived. The servers were very attentive and accommodated serving my birthday cake. Great happy hour menu as well as the regular. Everything we had was good. Overall, a great experience!

Go for the oysters, stay for dinner
We loved oyster happy hour--oysters and clams were fresh and delicious, good variety. The garden was the perfect quiet spot for dinner. Grilled octopus with apples and jalapenos was spectacular. Fish tacos were tender and tasty. There's no dessert menu but a chocolate pot de creme comes with the meal--a nice touch. Service was great, music was perfect, and the noise level wasn't so loud that you can't have a conversation, which was a nice change from most places these days.

Always a favorite
Love Mermaid Inn. My friend and I wanted to try new dishes, but she loves the lobster roll and I love the fish tacos so we stayed tried and true. The server seemed very rushed - not very friendly - but she was efficient. Great place to sit outside.

Always Great Seafood
We made our reservation for Mermaid Inn through Open Table but have dined there many times. They call it a fish shack but this is seafood dining at its best. We have always enjoyed our appetizers (can’t beat the fresh raw bar) and the entrees are terrific along with the wine and beverage selections. The lobster roll is our favorite, served with seasoned fries or a delicious salad, but we also have had the fish dinners. The service is excellent – attentive but not overbearing. We happened upon the end of happy hour which takes place daily - fish tacos were being ordered by just about every table along with a raw bar plate. Dine street side, inside or in the garden. We always recommend this East Village gem to our friends and family.

Great sea food
Great oysters, clams and other cocktail hour goodies.

Lovely spot on the Lower East Side
A short walk from the Angelika, the Mermaid caters to lively crowds in the front bar/restaurant and outdoor street cafe. Further back is a quieter eating space; and beyond that, a charming garden space. We had an early dinner in the garden. The octopus and beet salad appetizers were delicious, the fish was beautifully cooked and was served over small, tasty vegetables. The Cava was appropriately chilled and delicious. The wine list was generous and should please wine lovers.
Note: If you want to sit in the garden, go early as they don't take reservations for the garden. The service was notably good.
We will definitely return; and have already recommended it to several friends and family.

Always Great Seafood
The seafood at Mermaid Inn is always outstanding, from the lobster roll to the market-catch whole fish, perfectly grilled. The raw bar excels and every table we see has ordered something from it – I am partial to the littleneck clams but oysters abound. We have never gone wrong at this East Village gem which includes great service and casual ambience. The complimentary and only dessert is a small cup of chocolate pudding – I have never seen so many people scraping out every morsel of this reminder of childhood sweets. We are foodies and must admit that Mermaid Inn competes on a par with more high-end seafood restaurants in NYC.

Loved their Sunday lobster
Loved their Sunday lobster special. If you go, sit outside: the garden in the rear is very secluded and feels like taking a step outside of Manhattan

Oysters and wine
Great place, I often go for their happy hours and have oysters and wine, so cheap and cheerful!

Great seafood at reasonable prices
Mermaid Inn was a great place. The garden area in the back was fairly quiet and the food was fantastic.

Wonderful find, classy and delicous
Weekend happyhour(s) from 4-7 with dollar oytsers, delicous appetizers, and nice wines and cocktails, friendly staff that lets you finish each course before ordering your next (this is such a plus, and a lot of places won't do it). I'll definitely be back here.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Comfortable atmosphere, great food
It was a wonderful laid back environment to catch up with a friend over solid, delicious food. Everything tasted great and was presented beautifully as well. Service could have been more attentive, but it was a relaxed pace of dining, and we never felt rushed. Enjoyed octopus, lobster knuckle escargot, baked oysters, skate, and hushpuppies. All very delicious.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sooooo yummy! Great fresh fish tacos, oysters Rockefeller were sublime. Lobster rolls and lobster "escargot " also divine. Highly recommend.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, decent prices. Pleasant atmosphere. Definitely recommend to friends and look forward to dining there again soon.
10/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Such a nice evening: good wine, waiter, and ambience. I was looking for a nice place that wasn't too stuffy or loud and I got both ! The fish was scrumptious!! I will definitely go again!

I took my wife to dinner for her birthday and we had a really wonderful time. We had truly great service including a lovely waitress. We ordered oysters to start which were really wonderful, but before they came we had a complementary appetizer that included smoked salmon that was delicious. My wife ordered the fish tacos which she loved, however she felt they needed some seasoning (salt & pepper) would have made them even better. I had the blackened catfish that was excellent. They also noted it was my wife's birthday and brought us a complementary desert with a candle for her. Very nice touch. We are looking forward to returning for a happy hour sometime soon.

Fantastic dining experience
We got there early and had no trouble getting seated right away. The food was amazing and service awesome. Can't wait to go back next time we are in the city.

Very good food and very relaxing
Very good food and very relaxing atmosphere. The service was very attentive and considerate. Would definitely return.

Atmosphere was amazing, service
Atmosphere was amazing, service was excellent, food could have been better, the butternut soup which was a huge appeal for me to go there wasn't the greatest. It was too sweet and made me question if the chefs have ever tasted it. I eat that kind of aoup all the time. By far my favorite but this was a dissapointment.
