Expensive but great food.
Expensive but great food. The service was a little rushed. We got appetizers before we got a wine list, that we asked for, but I didn't feel they were pushing us out the door.

Both food and service are superb! The octopus salad is out of this world and the rack of lamb the best I've had in New York-cooked to perfection! The pasta tastes just as wonderful as it does in Italy! Try the chocolate soufflé and the bomboloni for desert. They have an impressive wine list but ask for suggestions-their recommendations have always been great! The service is prompt and attentive. Overall ...this place exceeds expectations across the board!!!!

Excellent upscale Northern
Excellent upscale Northern Italian. Dishes like grilled calamari (not fried), a garlic lamb saddle, and others you din't find in pasta-and-sauce joints. They have some of the usual fare, but go here for some more unique italian specialties you won't find elsewhere.

I don't want to write a review, its a gem I want to keep to myself. This place is perfect on every level. It is one of those restaurants where every little detail is flawlessly executed, as so you won't even notice the service. The food is amazing. One of the best lunches I have ever had, and for $28 2-course or $35 3-course for lunch, its a steal. Take your business partner, your mom, or the girl you have a crush on. This will get them to seal the business deal, win over your parents, and have her asking you out for another date.
You go here, your meal will be perfect. Every time. Nothing else I would change.

An Overlooked Gem
Why this isn't on NY's top five is beyond me. Food is simply outstanding service sublime and portion sizes are perfect. I've dined here a several times and always look forward to a return visit. It's quite small, so reservations are essential. It's hard to believe, but haven't had a meal of this quality since visiting 3-star La Pergola in Rome (ok, so Caravaggio doesn't have a panoramic view of the Vatican, but the cuisine is comparable). Not a dud on the menu and the staff treats you like a regular.

Special evening -- that made it a most pleasant New York City experience ! Welcoming bar and beautifully appointed dining room.

Reading the menu, I must say
Reading the menu, I must say was not inspiring, 'seen it ate it' combination of food, but that being said, they do those basic/traditional very well. The wine, the food was delicious, no complaints. Only thing haunting me is there wall art.
5/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
What a lovely restaurant! Spot on service, food and ambience. Very special place!

It was our 34th anniversary. I am so glad we chose to go to Caravaggio.

Had a very nice price-fixe
Had a very nice price-fixe lunch here. Very reasonable price for the Lunch but extras for drinks, wine and coffee were way overpriced. Guess they had to make up for the $28 lunch. Overall, we enjoyed the food and the experience. They allowed us to linger without hassle. We would return for lunch another time.

A Must Visit
This is a wonderful upper east side gem. The decor is understated, but very nice and is accentuated beautiful floral arrangements. The wait staff was pleasant, efficient and helpful. The food was outstanding! The Red Snapper was the best and the pasta dishes were excellent. It was lively, but you could easily have a conversation without straining.

Great food but snooty service
The waiters were really not very pleasant to us... They seemed in a bad mood. The food, however, is first class.

Pricey but good
Wonderful for a quiet lunch -- ordered appetizers which were sufficient for a light lunch, rounded out by coffee and dessert--both were delicious and the service was formal but unpretentious. We were able to hear each other speak.

Our second time within a week - first time in private room back because food was so good and now scheduling another reservation in two weeks. May have same thing again memorable white asparagus and morels followed by soft shell crab.

Unique and elegant atmosphere. Nice sized tables with ample space between them. Excellent food and service. Expensive, but not outrageous (in fact, for a fine first-class NYC restaurant, the prices are reasonable).

Caravaggio is a lovely restaurant
Caravaggio is a lovely restaurant with excellent food that never disappoints. They just raised their prix fix lunch from $28 to $30, however, and they were out of my favorite dish--lasagna!

Elegant environs (with some cosy corners) with courtly but expert and accommodating service of delicious Italian fare. Warm welcome. Will return.

This was our third visit to Caravaggio. Food is consistently in a class of its own compared to UES Italian restaurants. I always find that the specials are truly outstanding. Heirloom tomato salad and beet soup were just great.

Wonderful Lunch; Slow Service
Went for a weekday lunch with a client. The food is always wonderful but the service is not conducive to a quick lunch.

This is the second time the restaurant was out of both an appetizer (my favorite) and a main course, both of which I would have picked! There were only six diners when we were there, and we practically needed a whistle to get our wait person to our table.
So, while today wasn't up to their normal high standards, we will come back.

East side gem
Beautiful room nicely decorated with flowers .
Service very detailed and nice.
Interesting menu items all nicely presented.
8/11/2013 5:00:00 PM
This was one of the best restaurant experiences we have had in NYC. The food, the service and the atmosphere were all excellent.
We will go back on on our next trip to NY.

Elegant dining near Met
Our group (4) had a lovely early evening dinner here after several hours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art..a 10 minute walk. We were seated in the back, corner table. Service was excellent. The female waiter recited the long list of specials in great detail, and our appetizers/main course were mostly chosen from that. The food was beautifully prepared and delicious.

A wonderful place, always a 10.
My dear friend Gianni Adamamo is one of the best parts of this spot.

Best Italian in UES
Been going here for years.. Never disappoints .. In a city that has a million Italian restaurants, sadly, many are just horrible..
This is in the top 5 of Italian food in NYC..

Upper Manhattan's best kept secret
If this was located in midtown it would be mobbed every night. Fortunately, it's off the beaten track.. My recommendation is to visit the nearby art museums and book an early dinner table. Almost everything on the menu is divine. The room is tiny, but lovely. I've dined here numerous times and have always throughly enjoyed the experience. Lots of upper east side (ie, wealthy) regulars here. Easily one of my top 5 picks in Manhattan.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
As usual, food is superb.
As usual, food is superb. Just wish the lunch menu would vary more. I have had everything on it!
9/13/2013 5:00:00 PM
Excellent Italian food with a very large number of dinner specials in addition to a terrific menu. Outstanding wine list. Waiters are very European with regard to knowledge yet are very friendly to diners. The European style of multiple waiters walking together through the dining area may be a little stodgy to some Americans, but I think it is always quite positive, especially when the waiters are excellent, as they are at Caravaggio.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good food, rude hostess
Food was good (with the exception of a very bland soup special). Hostess/bartender was very rude. We arrived 15 minutes before our reservation to have a drink. She told us we shouldn't and that we should be seated right away because they had another party coming in after us. There were 2 of us. We arrived 15 minutes early. What if we hadn't? Made the experience feel rushed.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We go to Caravaggio for lunch
We go to Caravaggio for lunch frequently. The good news is that the price is right. The bad news is that the menu never changes! However, this is a quality restaurant that doesn't disappoint.

The Best Italian in NY
That is the best italian restaurant in NY, that's it.

Giacomo, Carolina, Paolina,Filippo
A wonderful atmosphere, an exquisite dinner, great wine and delicious Prosecco. We had the specials of the day, burata ( fresh mozzarella),oyster and mushroom soup ( delicate, flavorful, delicious),pheasant, spaghetti with lobster (huge chunks ) and fusilli with porcini mushrooms. The dessert was a special pumpkin souffle. We have been to this restaurant before and will surely return. It was very pricey, but definitely worth the cost. Highly recommended!!!

I go fairly often and like it a lot. This last time however, the service was very slow--too slow, which I did not like. But that will not stop me from going back because it has not happened before.

Everybody has an off night . . .
Less satisfying than many previous visits. Very crowded and the staff, usually masterful, was overwhelmed and less responsive than usual. Lots of bottles on the wine list were in fact unavailable, and these were not esoteric wines, but staples of the list. The food was quite good -- the entrees (dover sole and snapper baked in salt) were very well prepared, and the wine we ultimately wound up with was superb, albeit twice the price of the bottle originally chosen.
In fairness, even on an off night this is a very fine restaurant that performs at a level that's all too rare in these times. The holiday season and the crush of people dining out must be putting some strain on the staff. I hope they return to 5 star form very soon.
11/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
We now have a new favorite restaurant in Manhattan. The service was excellent, the food was excellent; the sommelier and waiter both made suggestions which turned out to be outstanding. We can't wait to get back for another wonderful meal.
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Wonderful staff. Wonderful food
Had a business dinner there recently. We were both very impressed with both the food and the attention of the staff. Not overbearing but always attentive.
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
The one friend who has been in my life since kindergarten visited N.Y. from Baltimore. We wanted and found in Caravaggio a great restaurant that had delicious food, wonderful service, and lovely surroundings where we could have a conversation. It is expensive, but for once, we all felt we really got our money's worth.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Late dining at Caravaggio
Last Tuesday it was raining a lot when we arrived at Caravaggio. I called to inform we would be about half an hour late.
The food was excellent, as it had been the two previous times we had been there, and the service superb. We will be back.
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
We loved this restaurant. So cozy. Great for people who like art. Really fun and lovely.

My Branzino was not noteworthy (in fact not even that good) but I ended up eating my aunt's veal with truffles which was magnificent.

Took friends from London to
Took friends from London to dine at Caravaggio telling them it serves some of the best pasta dishes in New York and would be a place where we could actually have a conversation over dinner. This all proved absolutely true, )but the venison and sardines we had were also wonderful A very helpful sommelier guided us through the extensive wine list to two fine wines. The service was attentive but not cloying. My sole complaint was the oh so large orally delivered "specials" menu---that many items (and there were more than ten) are impossible to remember and their presentation takes forever. Surely it can't be that hard to write a "specials" menu, but even if this flaw isn't corrected, Caravaggio is well worth a visit..
11/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
We took an out of town guest to Caravaggio for dinner and were impressed by the impeccable service, lovely food and chic decor. We could have almost been dining in Milan!
12/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Once again, I had the pleasure of entertaining friends at this wonderful restaurant. The food, service and atmosphere is always excellent. Appetizers were great and the meal was outstanding. As a NYC residence owner at the Saint Regis, a meal at this restaurant is always something to look forward to. Anytime, I have guests at my residence, I recommend Caravaggio. They have always commented back to me on the great experience, wonderful food and the excellent service.
