I always take out of towners
I always take out of towners here. This a great place to dazzle guests, BUT also has CONSISTENTLY good food and great service. Make sure to ask to be seated in the main dining area and not the lounge/bar area. This is also a great place to grab a fancy cocktail. It is not loud, so you can actually have normal sound levels of conversation.

The restaurant week set menu
The restaurant week set menu was great - would go back to order off the full menu. We loved the home made tofu!

Great Night Out!
I intended on going here for restaurant week with a friend. We decided to skip the restaurant week menu and sample various items off the menu. From the food, to the service, to the ambiance this restaurant is a perfect 10. I will definitely be back.

Food on Restaurant week was good, although I would have like a sushi choice and at least one other choice for the ice cream. Beautiful place.

The ambience is outstanding,
The ambience is outstanding, the interior and the crowd is amazing. The food was not too bad but not amazing. Perhaps I didn't order the right thing on the menu or I was expecting too much. I've had better japanese in the city for this price range.

We all came here for restaurant week, we were a table of 6, and service food and everything was perfect! Great experience again! LOVE this place!

Fancy + Yum = $$$
It's a fancy joint with good decor. The food is delicious, but a bit pricey.

Perfect Japanese Restaurant
The sashimi here is extremely fresh, which will melt in your mouth

Excellent Japanese Food
This is one of my favorite restaurants. The food is always excellent. My only complaint is that it can be a little noisy - I think it is how the room is built.
8/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Restaurant Week menu is as yummy as the regular. Two starting dishes (mushroom and homemade tofu), an entree (I had a delicious piece of fish, my boyfriend had the Kobe steak) and some sesame ice cream that was absolutely divine! The service is top notch, the decor is beautiful and spacious and the sake flight is a must. I definitely look forward to returning.

Cool decor. Service was excellent. Food was not spectacular, but good

washoku via new york
We always have a wonderful meal, with something for both of us, a vegetarian and an omnivore.
I am an avid sake drinker, so I enjoy the wide range of those on offer.
Desserts, while limited, are also well suited to cap off the meal.

Great decor and good food
It has a great decor with high ceiling that keeps noise level low. Starter menu of Restaurant Week home made Tofu was outstanding, so were o-banzai. I liked fried tuna but some people might say too tasty. Other members Liked Washy Gyu very much. Regular Manu may be a little pricy, but foods here are very good. I recommend this place.

Fine food, service, ambiance, but..
I've always liked this restaurant: food, service, ambiance are all superior, and dishes are often unusual. But this is my 2nd time there for Restaurant Week and, though my reservation said clearly that I'm highly allergic to pork, both times there were only 2 entree choices (every other restaurant I've been to had 3): 1 was pork, the other steak with a $13 surcharge. Since (unusual for Japanese restaurants), they also charge for tea, this was unacceptable and I won't return during Restaurant Week again.

Had a great time.
I used this restaurant for my husband's birthday the other night. This was our first time to use this restaurant but it was one of my must-go-Japanese-restaurants. They did a great job with the interior and the atmosphere. I had the Restaurant Week dinner and my husband had the Soyokaze kaiseki dinner. All the food was served on a beautiful dish and the presentation was also beautiful. The service was wonderful, too. The meals started with Obanzai, then sushi was really fresh. My main dish, maguro (tuna) was really good and my husband's, saikyo-yaki cod was wonderful, too. Overall, we had a great time with the food and the service and would like to come back on another special occasion.

Great ambience. Perfect for a date or groups for a special occasion.

Great food and sake list
You'll find all the traditional fare you'd expect at a Japanese restaurant plus quite a bit more for you to explore. The scooped tofu is delicious. The Wagyu dishes are great. The food quality is consistent. The staff is knowledgable and can recommend dishes and sake to match your taste. One of my favorites!

Great restaurant, terrific service, the food amazing.

First time having Brunch at EN
I LOVE EN! there's not much to say, everything is perfect. The food is cooked with heart and soul and the service is absolutely spotless. Brunch was delicious, slightly on the higher price range, but definitely worth it! Another successful meal at EN! No surprise at all!
8/23/2013 5:00:00 PM
My friend and I did the two tasting menus, not including the vegan menu. Our food was delicious! The meals were very intricate and interesting and I truly enjoyed everything that we tasted. We also got the Garlic Fried rice as a side which was to die for.
The only thing I do not recommend is the noodles, I am not a fan of cold noodles or eel but this is a personal opinion. Definitely a great spot to go to!
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is an elegant place overall
Amazing sake selection
Not pretentious nor a scene
Food stellar and service impeccable
The architecture is vast and minimal and you see nature out every window
Tatami rooms available
Please don't tell everyone you know as the noise level is always low!
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
other than dead crab, amazing
Uni don is to die for. Pike mackerel was heavenly. Raw veggies with miso sauce is beautifully presented and tasty. Miso soup was the one black mark. Soup was not special and I could tell the crab was dead before they started cooking it.
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
uni over rice was excellent,
uni over rice was excellent, uni was creamy and just the right amount. Truffle rice pot hits just the right note, fragrant and satifying. Sea bass was disappointing. Must try earl grey icecream, black sesame and green tea icecream are good too!

it was a good first experience
Overall, EN was good and I would return again. I had tofu for then first time and I liked it. It takes an open mind to enjoy it, and my server honestly gave me great comfort that it was prepared as one of the best she'd ever had. Also had the awesome Black Cod and shrimp fritters, which were excellent and finished with great shrimp tempura and avocado rolls. While my server was extremely attentive, the delivery of the food was slow that night. She gave us complimentary dessert to make amends. It worked.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
zen for lunch
Lunch reservation was very easy one day prior. It does depend on time and day of the week. My friend and I both had fresh pineapple juice with ginger. A very nice start to our meal. Followed by sublime fresh and warm tofu. The miso cod was very tasty. Fried boneless chicken was crunchy on the outside, but a bit dry on the inside. The dining area is enormous with soaring windows for a Japanese restaurant. We ate leisurely, but rather expensive meal. Fresh warm tofu is a must! Nothing store bought comes close.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Tasting menu is wonderful, especially paired with sake.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious food served in a luxurious modem space. The food is specialness incarnate. Impeccable ingredients seduced junto their best selves and served on a variety of well chosen plates designed to showcase the food. There are many covetable design details yet each is in service of the food. Can't wait to return. The fried chicken special is whispering my name

Great authentic Japanese restaurant
I had dinner here for a special occasion. The sashimi here is definitely unparallelled, even beating most Japanese sushi restaurants in NYC.. If you want to taste authentic Japanese food, this is the place you should try, for they serve simple dishes in a very traditional manner, called "Obanzai.". While the restaurant is laid out in a roomy manner, the ambient lighting is creating a romantic atmosphere. Only one thing I notices is that I needed some efforts to call a waiter's attention.

Less bang for your buck
You have to spend a lot to get a lot. While En does offer many more affordably priced dishes the real stunners on the menu are equally stunning in price, and though family style gives you a nice variety of food it can also lead to quite a pricey check. And seriously, $29 for 1/2 dozen kumamoto oysters? I can think of several places of the top of my head that charge less than half that!
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good service and presentation.
Good service and presentation. The meal was very good but not outstanding. Perhaps the food is more impressive at dinner.
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Solid but not spectacular
Solid but not spectacular dinner at En Japanese Brasserie. Service and atmosphere were great and some of the food-Cod, Tuna and Clay Pot- was very good but other courses were fair at best. I would go back because of the service and feel of the restaurant-and I would order differently.
10/17/2013 5:00:00 PM
Great place to eat
This place was wonderful. Good food. Good service. I bit high class for me. I wouldve liked a more low key and less fancy of a service. But overall a very good experience. I was expecting this place to be more of a rowdy bistro type of restaurant but its fine. The prices were a little steep for the amount of food but the food itself was awesome. I'd come back again.

We live this place
Albeit EN is expensive it's worth the money ! We had the tasting menu this time and it was great. It included our favorite dishes the chicken and the cod! And the signature tofu never disappoints!

Great Omakase Menu
À very original and delicious menu. Sashimi were excellent and lobster was terrific.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
remarkable Japanese 'brasserie'
This wonderfully original restaurant is enclosed in a pleasant, naturally lit space with spare but comfortable furnishings. Start with some of the fresh tofu--this custard-like delicacy is made every three hours.-- and continue with one of the grilled offerings. We tried the grilled black cod, pork sandwich and a special 'hamburger'. All were delicious and served with multiple dishes of pickles, rice, seaweed salad, and another small bowl of the special tofu, this time served with ginger and scallions.
For dessert, the pumpkin creme brule was a winner. But one was shared as it was all we could manage after the meal.
A terrific discovery worth the trip.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food choices seemed more limited at brunch than in prior times.
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
Our waiter was very attentive, and the staff was very helpful and always clearing out plates. I enjoyed the Aozora tasting menu and substituted the beef for the blackened cod dish. Everything was fantastic. My favorite dish was the lobster and sea urchin!....My absolute favorite drink had to be the Seppun! Bill came to over 200$ but it was worth it!
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had the vegan with sake pairing prix-fixe and larger prix-fixe (aozora). Excellent! Nothing wrong with this place... maybe the customers were being a bit loud.

A bit of Japan in NYC
EN Japan Brasserie took me back to Japan which I visited earlier this year with the authentic flavors and traditional cooking styles. I highly recommend the pre fixe meals to give you the full breadth of Japanese flavors outside of sushi. The service was wonderful and it was a great way to kick off my NYC visit.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
This was my first time at EN, had the Kaiseki with some additions (hot tofu, crab miso soup). Everything was very good but the sashimi, which didn't seem particularly high quality.
One big thing - I had a reservation but they seated me and my companion at the long benchlike square "open table' or whatever they call it thing in the middle of the dining room. I think they will do this by default if there are only two in your party. As I did not know this, I didn't know beforehand to ask for a real table. The open benchlike table is basically like sitting at a bar in front of a plant, and it's not very comfortable and makes both conversation and service awkward.

Japanese that isn't just sushi
Went with high expectations and wasn't let down. Started with three 'O Banzai' dishes' with the lotus root with pork being a particular highlight. I then had the pork belly with miso, daikon radish and hard boiled egg - big, soft lumps of pork in a lovely unctuous miso soupy-sauce. My girlfriend went for the trout - her reaction to which she likened to a scene in Ratatouille. I haven't the foggiest what she's talking about but I believe thats a very good thing. We finished with black-sesame & tofu doughnuts with vanilla ice cream - an unnecessary indulgence but tasty. Accompanying glass of shochu was nicely authentic but should have probably wine. We were in the outer room which was fine but the main room looks more fun.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
wonderful as usual!
The incredible food and atmosphere never disappoints. Standbys like the warm tofu, en shiso garlic fried rice, and fried chicken were great, and tried shabu here for the first time. One friend, a former New Yorker, was happy to return to her favorite spot, and introduced En to a pal, who loved it.
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
Best Japanese food & dining experience in the city!
11/23/2013 4:00:00 PM
EN is superb
This was my third or fourth visit. This is all about if you like this type of cuisine. I happen to like it very much. The menu is geared to small serving plates, So order a bunch. The fresh tofu is a joy. I ordered the smelts for the first time and I would recommend.
Just take a look at the menu. And you will know right away if this place is for you. How they do what they do is great. But avoid if what they do is not for you.

We came here because it was recommended by a friend. Really good food and service. Loved the tofu and the Tasmanian trout.
