One of the best Italian Restaurants
The review title says it all. Interesting selection of great food. You must try the mozzarella appetizer. As Arnold said: We'll be back!

I have eaten at your restaurant several times with my girlfriends, but decided to make a special night with my boyfriend. We had a nice table and enjoyed a lovely evening. I have never had a bad meal at your establishment and look forward to many more evenings.

Assaggi Osteria Doesn't Disappoint
Not pour first time there...great food and great service...again. One area that AO could focus upon are the desserts...cookies were dry and bland and the other desserts we selected were so-so. We don't usually choose dessert, but we did this time...you are not missing anything if you don't have dessert here since the rest of the dishes are always quite excellent.

Another superb dinner at Assaggi Osteria. Reservations for dinner at 7:15 and promptly seated at our table. Restaurant was very crowded, but we were greeted warmly by our server. Menu is diverse with daily specials from soup to desserts. Two very different entres were orders (mixed seafood grill and ravioli), and each were delicious! Great drinks, delicious dinner, lovely dessert and excellent service.

One good one not so good
I took a neighbor for lunch. I enjoyed my meal. My friend was not as happy with hers. She started with gaspacho which she said was ok but slightly vinegary and fully blended whereas she prefers to have a few chunks of ingredients added... but for her that was a so-so ... Then she had a seafood with "spicy" tomato and fish broth. She could not taste the "spicy" though felt the seafood was cooked perfectly. She finished with coconut ice cream which she did enjoy as it had little pieces of strongly flavors of coconut in it. They took the cost of her entree off the bill which was a good gesture. I had a house salad which was fairly standard, nothing to rave about. And had grilled salmon with olives and tomato and baby artichoke. Fair not rave.

Another Great Dinner
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Assaggi Osteria. As usual, the food and service were top-notch. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

The Italian Neighborhood Gem
This is a real and homey Italian restaurat
The menu is excellent and everything is

Great appetizers, salads & desserts
They have wonderful appetizers, salads and desserts. Their main entrees are good, but not exceptional. The next time we go I think we will order two appetizers and dessert. Service was outstanding.

Excellent Italian food in
Excellent Italian food in a very comfortable environment,The maitre/owner Gianni was very very accomodating and made our good experience even more memorable and positive because,I left my wallet at home. When we offered to go back to Reston (20 miles away)to pick it up,he offered let me pay him the next day...I was so embarassed but he was very generous and trusting.
Never had had an experience like that.i think that this epitomizes customer service even when there is risk.

The freshest Italian food in McLean
I brought my girlfriend to Assaggi Osteria based on reviews in the Washingtonian Magazine and a couple of others sources. The food was all fresh, and you can tell the pasta and sauces were homemade. The only issue we had was with the service. Our waiter was slow, and he gave a lot more attention to other tables than ours. If you have to ask us whether it is alright to bring the next course, then there is something wrong. I would recommend the restaurant but just not the waiter.

Lovely meal, great service.
A wonderful place for true Italian food in McLean. There are many choices for Italian but this has got to be one of the best.

Food was very good - service was good but not exceptional. Somewhat high pricewise.

Assaggi Osteria is wonderful
We celebrated a birthday -- and were so pleased by the service and the food. We especially enjoyed the fresh pasta dishes. The stuffed zucchini blossom salad was really delicious -- what a treat! A perfect celebration!

What a gem! Probably the best
What a gem! Probably the best italian restaurant in all of the VA suburbs. Delicious, delicate fare in a quiet strip mall restaurant.

First time. Won't be the last time
Our friend suggested this restaurant. Everything was perfect. Good service. Great food. Fine wine. And can't say anything less than a perfect evening.

This is a favorite neighborhood restaurant. The food is always good and the service is excellent. You always feel special here.

Good old standby
We live in the neighborhood and this is one of the places to which we return time and again.

Raviolini was still good but was missing usual asparagus or mushrooms. I was disappointed they took the meatball appetizer off the menu.

This chef does fish with a gentle and skillful hand leaving the fish tender and sweet without grease. The seafood is always fresh and fabulously prepared. The table bread is New York imported with a lovely crust and moist center. I tried the seafood risotto and was not disappointed as the shrimp, lobster and scallops were tender and sweet. The spinach salad has asparagus and beets with shaved cheese and a light citrus dressing. I recommend this restaurant to all my friends.

A Taste of Italy
Very nice after an extended stay in Italy. Not Italy quality but very nice considering the options available in the U.S. Would dine there again. Nice menu. Good mostly authentic Italian food and good wine pics. Even had a Fallenghina!!!

Wish this was in our neighborhood
We originally went to Assaggi based on Open Table reviews and we've been back many times since because of the food and service - all outstanding. If we lived closer, we would go even more often. We love the neighborhoody but upscale feel and the staff is always very friendly and helpful. Love the home made pastas and the menu changes seasonally with specials every night so we also find something new to try.

A more authentic take on Italian
Assaggi Osteria is a nice smaller restaurant in McLean, it has somewhat limited seating - especially for outdoor seating, but as we came for lunch, seating availability was not a problem. Although the waitstaff could be a little friendlier in their attitudes, the management/owners seem to be quite pleasant, welcoming individuals. The food is quite good, and I can highly recommend the rucola salad. As far as the entrees went, everyone at our table was quite pleased with their food. The salmon was excellent, and the paninis were also quite good. I ordered the garganelli pasta and found the meat sauce somewhat strong to taste, but still quite nice. The flour-less carrot cake dessert was fantastic and a must have, it is worth going back for!

Assaggi Rocks with 4.5 Stars
We thoroughly enjoyed our Restaurant Week lunch at Assaggi. The food was delicious, and service was attentive. The choices were excellent. My friend had never before had panna cotta and is now a fan. I was always a fan of that wonderful dessert. The bread was also beyond delicious. Ambiance is also excellent. I would rate it a 4.5 dining experience.

Had lunch with a girlfriend who has never been here. She loved the food and commented that she would be visiting again soon. Our salmon entree was excellent and my latte was very good as well. This place never disappoints.

Great value for money
Food quality definitely first class. Prices reasonable. Unable to book other restaurants on Restaurant Week, it was surprisingly empty.

One of our favorite restaurants
We love this place! Good food, good service, it is always a wonderful evening.

The homemade pasta with crab
The homemade pasta with crab meat and veggies was excellent and served piping hot. The Halibut special came with lobster mushrooms and shrimp with an herbal sauce that enhanced the fish without overwhelming it. The bread here is the best...thick chewy crust with soft , moist center and served warm. You can eat late at night and always have a great dining experience.
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice place to try
The food was pretty good, though not earth shattering at all. Nice quiet place to go to lunch to catch up with an old friend. The main letdown was a vanilla panna cotta for dessert. Salad and pasta dish were nice. The service was professional and attentive without being overbearing.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
We love having Assaggi nearby!
It is great to have a place in McLean with great food and wine -- we just took another couple there for dinner without realizing it was restaurant week--got a great dinner at a moderate price which was a lovely surprise! I had asked for a quiet table and dear Giovanni immediately took us to the back room which was perfect.

Tiny Little Slice of American Italy
Overall, the restaurant was good. My mother and I went during lunch. The restaurant has an outdoor option but we went indoors because of the heat. The inside was a bit dark compared to other restaurants but the scene was more of a relaxed feel with empty wine bottles lining the wall. The restaurant is quite small despite it's appearance. The waiting staff were friendly and quick and certainly knew their wine. The food was delicious. The sweet pea soup was exquisite but the surprise was the fried calamari with jalapeno dip. The calamari was lightly fried. The pasta with veal and borgone (sp?) sauce was good and paired nicely with a pinot grigio. The restaurant also special that I would definitely check out in the future.

The house made pasta was excellent
The house made pasta was excellent and came with a generous portion of crabmeat. The fish here is always sweet and cooked to perfection, and mine was no exception. The bread is always crusty with a moist, soft center and is usually warm. The bread is so fresh and good the no butter or oil is needed.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Add $10 to every entree from your neighborhood Italian restaurant and that's what it costs. Maybe because they put shellfish in every entrée. You can order your meal without shellfish (and then send it back when they don't listen) but you still pay top price. The bread was great though. And they use fresh grated parmesan. They don't normally give you the parmesan with the oil for the bread. But, believe me, the bread is much better with both oil and fresh grated parmesan. The service is really good though and they try to please.

The food was very good (cinnamon
The food was very good (cinnamon gelato superb!) and the service truly outstanding. However, they had not read the reservation (very few other people there because it was Labor Day) so didnt recognize my name when I arrived and, gave no indication of awareness that we were there to celebrate a birthday.
But, will certainly go back - some very inventive dishes on the menu.

Almost a great experience
This was our second time here. The first time was close to perfect. The food is excellent. Especially try their cheeses, which are top notch. They fell a little short this time because we asked the waiter for recommendations and told him that we don't eat port. Sure enough, we stopped him when he recommended something with pork. You'd think that reminder would be enough but the appetizer came with pork on it (which wasn't mentioned in the menu). Everything else went well and I still recommend the restaurant. Especially the cheeses!

Great dinner as Always.
Dinner this past Saturday night was, again, terrific. We always enjoy our meals, the atmosphere and whole evening.

Great food and welcoming atmosphere
We had a small family gathering and had a great time. The waiter suggested an antipasto assortment to start, which was a BIG hit--wonderful cheeses, meats etc. We also had the quail appetizer, which was outstanding. All of the entrees were delicious, although my husband complained that the lobster portion on the seafood platter was a little skimpy. Obviously a popular neighborhood spot but worth a drive as well--we left feeling well fed and well taken care of.

The New York strip was perfectly
The New York strip was perfectly grilled and the homemade pasta dish was full of crabmeat and delicious vegetables. The kitchen always gets it right at Assaggi Osteria.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
A most pleasant meal
The setting is quiet and friendly. A good place to visit while enjoying carefully prepared and presented food. The prosciutto and mozzarella is quite nice and. not something you could replicate by a trip to Balducci's. The calamari are always fresh and tender. The cioppino is very nicely prepared without an overdose of tomato paste. The raviolini made a very nice second course for my guest. It is a good place for grown ups of all ages.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
GOOD FOOD AND SERVICE
pasta was fresh home made and sauce was just enough richness to go with gnocchi. Salmon and puree celery root were done just right. Home made bread is one of reason we go back to this restaurant. Great food and service! Very quiet and peaceful for middle age to senior citizen.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Overall a pleasant experience
Being on a busy road and sitting outside is a trade-off. For us it was worth it. The daily-made pasta didn't taste as fresh as expected but this was the only low point of the experience. The service was exceptional and all the other items from drinks to appetizer and entree compliments were outstanding. We will be back.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Italian Food
We went for lunch. We each chose the $14 lunch special, which was for 2 courses. Great salad, tiramisu and veggie lasagna. It was made with spinach and butternut squash. Service was great, as was the coffee and bread to dip in the olive oil. I've already recommended this place to my friends.

Making it Right!
Food and service are quality indicators that make us return to a restaurant, and those are just two of the reasons why we dine at Assaggi for both lunch and dinner. Another indicator is that when there is a problem or something goes wrong, the manager takes responsibility and makes it right. So, because of a communication issues, our celebratory dinner on Saturday did not turn out the way it should have. The matre'd accepted responsibility, was deeply apologetic, made amends for the evening, and made an attractive offer to ensure our return for another celebration.
We are looking forward to another dinner with all four of us present!

Fine (expensive) dining
We had a very nice Thanksgiving dinner at Assaggi and were all in all very happy with the experience. I was not too crazy about the tuna that I ordered (a little dry and almost no sides except some garnish). I think that when you pay almost $30 for an entrée, it should at least come with a side or a salad (or be outrageously delicious).. The rest of my family liked their Thanksgiving turkey specials very much. The deserts were delicious too.
All in all, I would definitely go back, but think that the prices are still a bit on the high end.

First timers--we'll go back!
We honestly found this place doing an internet search for restaurants that were open for Thanksgiving. What a gem we discovered!
My husband had a veal ravioli dish and I had the pasta garganella. Both were incredibly delicious. Salads & appetizers were good.
The wine selection is *extensive*. Everywhere you look there are wine bottles in various storage pieces. We will be coming back to sit at the bar (small, cozy and very inviting) to try some of these offerings.
Dessert was tiramisu for hubby and a type of chocolate mousse w/berries for me. Tiramisu was the best we'd ever had. The mousse was a bit more 'frozen' than usual fare but it had bits of dark chocolate in it and was absolutely delicious. The berries were also yummy.
