Great ambiance. Excellent
Great ambiance. Excellent fare. Low key good service. Like the neighborhood too - off the beaten track. Would go back and recommend to others.

We had a great, quiet lunch experience. The restaurant was pretty empty, but that actually amde it better for us- amazing service, perfect food, etc. We both really enjoyed it.

We have been to New York on
We have been to New York on three occasions, over three years, and go back to Lavagna religiously. The foods is outstanding and the ravioli is the best we've had anywhere! The atmosphere is great too. It's a real gem. Be sure to book though - it is popular.

second time at this place
second time at this place and it was great again. food is fantastic. it's a romantic place, great for a date for a double date. it was a little louder than I wanted, but I am not going to complain about that. I think it was just a sign of the people there and that it was a popular spot. i would def go back.

The staff at Lavagna is a little brusk but the food makes up for the attitude. The papardelle is a must-have as is the roasted artichoke appetizer. If you're having dessert, you must get the crostada!
4/26/2013 4:00:00 PM
While hard to get a good reservation time, and they do try to turn over the tables, the rigatoni here makes it all worthwhile. Possibly the best i have ever had, and i lived in Italy! Extensive italian wine list and very romantic atmosphere also make this a great date spot. I would avoid the monkfish unless you have a special love for it, but otherwise i have not been disappointed here.

Service is wonderful, food is consistently superb. Very authentic Italian. Really is great both for a date or for a dinner with your family. We love Lavagna and go often, sometimes just the two of us and sometimes with our daughters.

Lived up to great expectations
This restaurant was recommended by my sister-in-law. When I saw the website pics and menu - it looked like a lovely, cozy, and delicious spot - and, sure enough it was! Great food. Great service. Cozy.

East Village Gem
We went to Lavagna to celebrate our daughter's graduation from college. It was a cold, rainy night but all that disappeared when we walked into Lavagna. It was warm, cozy and we were greeted warmly by everyone there. The food was great and the service was superb. We loved it.

Best Italian in Alphabet City
Superior, grown-up alternative to overhyped EV Italian hotspots like Supper and the now-departed Max, Lavagna's exceptional food and rustic charm are perfect for a date, special occasion or just an excellent meal. Try the farfalle with rabbit ragu, the pork chop, the fish for two, the amazing artichoke appetizer...I could go on. It's all good here. Also a solid wine list, wood-burning oven, and knowledgeable staff make this a can't miss dinner destination.
5/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Where else in NY does a restauranteur bother to know your name?! The food , wine and ambiance brings us back repeatedly but the personal touch is an added pleasure
6/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
excellent food, great service, noise level was conducive to conversation the night we were there but can get noisy. Consistently a winner. George and staff are real pros.

Dinner in Lavagna
I had a very nice experience at Lavagna!
Very good meal, cava and service. The advice given by the personal was very good and helpful in terms of food and wine selection.
Good choose for especial occasion. Convenient price vs quality relation.

Great place with great food
Great place with great food but a tad o the expensive side. I find the wine was especially marked up.

LES little Italian classic
Lavagna was a wonderful little neighborhood find. I heard about it through the Immaculate Infatuation app and was eager to try it out. The food and environment were perfect, and the server really knew his stuff.

I find the one realable restaurant on the east side is Lavagna, food excellent ,with good prices look forward to going back
6/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
not to be chopped
I think the owner was our waiter, and if not, he should be. Extremely knowledgeable and a perfect guide through our party of 9. He not only offered recommendations, but when asked about the Crostata, he was prepared with a history of its former chef, Amanda Freitag.
6/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
I'm very picky regarding the dishes because I'm Italian and I know to distinguish the quality but let me say something.... Lavagna is on of the best restaurant in the USA, small enough and the service is excellent, the food is ....... you are smiling while you eating because the flavor is so amazing !!!!!!
The owner is friendly, the food is fresh... For me... one of the best restaurant in the USA and Italy. Try maccaroni alla matriciana, OMG better in lavagna restaurant than in Italy.
6/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
Why did it take me so long to hear about this wonderful spot? Delicious, fresh food with wonderful presentation and superb service. Our group shared apps, pastas and main courses. The fish special, a grilled sock- eye salmon served over shaved asparagus risotto with a cold tomato salad was perfectly grilled and really ample portions. I will definitely go back. Only complaint is that it is on the noisy side and tables are really packed in.

Delicious, relaxed, no pretensions
First time we went and we'll be back. Been all over NYC and this is one of those that falls in the category of "real" places. Great drinks, food that's beautifully prepared with wonderful ingredients yet simple enough. Wait staff young but well versed. Just exactly what you need when you need a corner of NYC that is accessible, satisfying and human. Not to knock other places, but this is when you want to dine Italian very well but not with the hectic heightened atmosphere of a Maialino, Babbo or Franny's.

Always a great choice
The food is predictably outstanding. The menu never changes but there are a few specials each night. Reliable, comfortable, congenial. Our go to place for a good meal. George the owner runs the house with style and efficiency. Unrushed, unpretentious, and a wonderful neighborhood gem. Worth the trip from anywhere in Manhattan.

It is hard to find a restaurant where my 83 year old father, 40 year old cousin and aunt from the suburbs all agree that it was a fabulous experience. Lavagna proved this exists! I am out two-three nights per week for work so I must confess I am not easily impressed! The food was fantastic; authentic Italian, prepared in the simple fresh way my Grandmother did. There was background music and other diners, but the noise level was such that we could have a lively conversation and actually hear each other without yelling! Lastly, the service was impeccable; I felt like I was in someone's home, not a restaurant. We stayed for hours and the staff made us feel totally welcome. I am definitely taking my friends and family back here! Great find!!!!

A Neighborhood Gem
Although Lavagna is not new and in our basic neighborhood, it was new to me and my friends. We were all impressed from start to finish with the service, the menu choices, the wine the waiter suggested for us in our price range, and of course the food. My husband and I plan to go back this weekend.

I've been going to Lavagna for years and it never disappoints. Affordable and delicious.
8/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved Lavagna for Sunday brunch. We had gluten-free folks in our party, and everyone was able to find something delicious on the menu. Our server was friendly and attentive in just the right way. The restaurant was nearly empty at 1:30 on Sunday afternoon, which surprised us because the food was excellent. Try it!

Unique Italian at affordable prices
If you're looking for a great neighborhood Italian spot at affordable prices, this is the place. The windows were open and was perfect with good weather. Excellent wine suggestion from the server, and many under $50. Best rigatoni dish I've had in a while. Loved the appetizer (assorted olives in olive oil/garlic/spices served with GOOD bread). There's a reason why this place is rated so highly. Totally met my expectations and I would definitely go back.

East Village Gem
Went on a beautiful quiet (Labor Day) evening. The front of the restaurant was open to the street which was very comfortable due to the good weather. The staff was attentive and informative. Great wine list and some good selections by the glass. Roasted artichoke salad was outstanding. With our bottle of red wine we ordered the rack of lamb and the pork chop. Both were cooked exactly as requested and both were excellent. The spicy quality of the pork made it the standout. We will definitely return to Lavagna.

Touch of Italia on LES
Noise aside, dinner was very good and a great value. Had the prix fixe ($34 between 6 and 7). Except for specials and a few other items, everything was fair game! Chose the scallops as appetizer -- perfectly cooked and lots of them. Then had the pappardelle (home made) with rabbit braised -- also delicious.
Wines range from $30 to $550 -- plenty to choose from! We selected an reasonable Sangiovese and were not disappointed. It was dry and had enough fruit.
Now for the noise level -- the wait staff turned down the music each time we requested it. The problem was more the loud conversations. Had it been warmer, we would have sat outside in the quiet LES.

This E Village gem is a perfect neighborhood restaurant as well as a worthy destination. I will return for the sweet pea ravioli which were delicate and fresh, scallop app -- sublime, fresh fish and great apple dessert. Exceeded all expectations on every level. GO,

great prix fix
Overall the food was very good. The scallops were succulent not too salty. The chocolate mousse cake was heavenly...rich, not too dense nor "sugary" sweet. My only slight complaint is the pork chop...seems a bit over cooked and on the bland side. The sides that accompanied it helped a little. Felt I had to finish 1"? thick pork chop while the meat "juices" is still there. Otherwise when the heat is gone, meat would be tough & quite dry...which it was..since i could not eat "fast" enough. My boyfriend had the monkfish. To my surprise it was quite good: light and tasty. (Usually, i don't order monk fish since meat is usually on the hearty side).

Intimate and warm
This is cozy restaurant that has a warm and rustic feel. Although it is a smallish space, you do not feel cramped. The service is impeccable. The food reminds me of what I had in Rome, and everything on the menu, including the wine, is reasonably priced. You can always order expensively to impress that special someone, but it is not necessary. You can bring your friends or hunker down for a romantic dinner. The entire experience was lovely, and I will most definitely come again.

Great Food and Experience
We were a party of 6 and had a great time. The food was great and the wine list is pretty extensive. They are knowledgeable and helpful with the food and drinks. I have a gluten allergy and was a little nervous about some of the items, so stayed with food I knew couldn't be affected very easily. Would definitely return!

Fantastic and consistent in the EV
Artichoke hearts were so good as an appetizer and the fish special with risotto was great. Pasta with rabbit was spot on.

great restaurant - bad service
Food and ambience were fantastic. Pasta with braised rabbit was particularly fantastic.
Service was not good - unfriendly, unattentive and slow.

Lavagna is a wonderful restaurant.
Lavagna is a wonderful restaurant. Of all the restaurants I visited on a recent trip to NYC, it was my favorite. I had the sweet pea ravioli and it was fantastic. Our waiter was perfect, informed yet not obsequious (as I find some other wait staff to be). Thank you for a real dining treat.

GREAT downtown spot
The food is consistently great and the service impeccable. I have thrown big parties there, small parties and had dinner for two. Everyone I bring loves it as well. Fabulous restaurant.

My husband and I celebrated our fifth anniversary on 11/16/13. We had a wonderful time! Delicious food, great drinks, and awesome service. My husband and I were surprised with a delicious desert with a candle in the middle. I had mentioned in the reservation that I was celebrating my fifth anniversary but never expected anything. It was wonderful, highly recommended!
