The food was great. Loved the atmosphere. A real gem. Would highly recommend!

Every dish that our group had, including appetizers and entrees, was great! No matter the type of seafood, each item was cooked perfectly and blended wonderfully with the accompanying sides. Pairing all of this with a nice bottle of wine made for a superb meal that had everyone very, very glad we had chosen The Water Grill!

Love the food.
This was my second time here and it was a good experience again. The food is great. I've never ordered anything here that wasn't just amazingly good. The service, too, is excellent. The entire staff is on point and very friendly. The only downside to eating here for me is the noise level when it gets very busy, which it often is. Being surrounded by so many people all talking at once, some of them pretty loudly, makes it difficult to be able to to have a conversation at your table, unless you talk louder too. I don't know that it bothers a lot of other people who eat here but it certainly does bother me. Still, I will keep coming back, because the food and service are just so good.

Still a favorite but ....
As always, the food was good, but the service was a bit slow. We dined upstairs for the first time and there appeared to be a few larger groups/parties going on. Our server was working the main dining area which was not full, but the service was slow. While she was friendly and attentive while at our table, when she left, she disappeared. She didn't write our order down and had to return to the table twice to clarify. My drink was not prepared correctly and while she was apologetic and corrected it immediately, her response was that it was dark at the bar and she couldn't tell if it was correct or not. None of these issues will keep us from returning or recommending, but should be addressed!

Four of us had seafood - each a very different choice - and they were ALL wonderful. The fifth had a steak which he said was outstanding so we were all very pleased. We all will definitely go back for another delicious meal.

One of my favorites.we took my mother for her birthday and now her favorite.

Fit for an Anniversary
Went to the Water Grill based on online reviews and the food and service were excellent. We had a corner table to ourselves right at the window. The server was friendly and didn't mind that we took our time to finish our food and drinks. I had the spinach/cheese/tomato stuffed chicken breast and polenta cake. My girlfriend had the mushroom tomato pesto pasta. I would recommend and will go again for a special occasion.

This restaurant was very enjoyable. The wait staff were very attentive, and we had just the right amount of time between the first and second course of our lunch. The food was very good, well presented, the correct temperature, and there was quite enough! We were there for lunch, had a reservation and therefore no wait to be seated. I would highly recommend this restaurant!

Great atmosphere and food
My wife and I enjoyed perfectly prepared shrimp and tuna skewers for dinner. Great service!

Will be back
My husband and I went to dinner at Water Grill at 630 on a Saturday evening. We were seated promptly out on the front sun room. It was a little crowded there; if you were hoping to have a private conversation forget it. The food was delicious though! We had the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer; I had the crab cakes and my husband had grilled salmon. We will certainly be back.

My wife and I chose Water
My wife and I chose Water Grill based on a previous experience and we were not disappointed. My brother and his wife were visiting from Florida and we wanted them to have a nice dining experience. My brother is a Chef who used to work in Richmond. He now heads a cullinary program at a college in Florida. All four of us had the dining experience we had anticipated. From the food preparation and presentation to the service and ambiance, we were not at all disappointed.

Pro's and Cons
Excellent variety of oysters, Killer Pork Chop, very good seared scalllops, fair she crab soup, fair shrimp and scallops... Mediocre seared Tuna over Salad.
Service... 3 out of 4 Very Good.. Once a real stiff.
But I'll be back...

Great find in the Richmond Area
This is our second time to the Water Grill Restaurant. Both experiences have been excellent. We were seated immediately and the service was excellent. The food is not only delicious but the presentation beautiful. We would highly recommend the she crab soup, curry mussels and calamari to start. As entrées, I loved the crab cakes and others raved about the shrimp and scallops and rib eye. We will definitely be back again and again!

Great food, but very loud
If you are out with a group great place, but this is not the place to go for a romantice evening.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is always excellent here.
I almost always have the Simply Grilled, because the salmon is so good.
8/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Delicious dinner and excellent service. The name change but not the quality. Enjoy the experience of dining there.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is terrific but the noise level upstairs is so loud you can't hear across the table. We had also eaten downstairs several weeks ago and it was noisy but not quite as bad. If that problem could be taken care of it would be great.

Oysters are the best
We were looking for a reasonably priced seafood night out, and one of our first thoughts was Water Costal Kitchen. (It's still Water Grill to us, but that's a different story) Monday night features oyster dishes on their special menu, and we all chose fried oysters. Normally we're not big fans of fried anything, but these are a big exception. Light, perfectly cooked oysters are a real delight and these don't seem "fried" at all. Can't wait to go back for lobster night!

Went to Visit our son for the first time at university of Richmond and found this restaurant on Cary st. Excellent food. I had the Mahi-Mahi which was fresh and had a great flavor. The Hummus w pita and veg. had a great flavor too. Would definitely go back.

Favorite Restaurant in Richmond!!
We've dined at the Water Coastal Kitchen for special occasions the past 3 years. It's a favorite of our family because of the great food, warm & inviting ambience and the friendly staff. The location is fantastic and the look & feel of the restaurant is unique and very "un-chain" like. We love it - and will plan on coming back when we're in town to celebrate memorable family times.

We dined here on a "Lobster Tuesday" Had a 1 1/4 lb of Lobster! It was very good and the price was even better ! Coming for the San Francisco Bay Area this dinner was a bargain !!! I would go back again. The server was very attentive to our needs!

Our food was delicious and our server was polite and attentive.
The burgers were a little overcooked, we asked for pink centers and got well done.
All in all a very pleasant experience.

High-end without the high price
I went here for brunch with friends and was blown away. All the food was amazing, including the steak and eggs, crab omelet and lobster omelet all served with fresh fruit, a biscuit and roasted potatoes - even mini-muffins to start - all for less than $14 a plate! It has a fine dining atmosphere without the stuffiness, but could be very romantic. We would have loved to sit outside had it not been raining. Great location in the heart of Carytown!.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went for Brunch, usually a problem satisfying a large group, but the large selection of brunch items meant they had something for everyone from pancakes to sandwiches.

Wonderful for Restaurant Week
It's always nice when a restaurant uses Restaurant Week to introduce new customer's to their offerings - rather than providing "tasting plates" of their menu! Water Coastal Kitchen is in the former cateagory! Their RW offerings were full-sized and some of the best items from their menu. I had the apple glazed pork chop which was juicy and beautifully prepared. My wife had the pecan encrusted trout - she said it was delicious but maybe had too many pecans in the crust - I didn't know that was possible. Service was friendly and professional. It was a very good meal - we'll be back!

Fabulous Restaurant Week meal
My party of 3 really enjoyed our Richmond Restaurant Week meals. There was no skimping on taste even though the meal price was lower than usual I had the crunchy maple trout with sweet potato as well as a beet and arugula salad to start. Completing the fall theme was my choice of the pumpkin roll filled with a nice, non-sweet filling. My dinner companions had the pork chop and mahi-mahi entrees. We washed everything down with isee. The wine list gave us several good options that would work with our entrees. We ended up choosing a bottle of La Roche Pouilly Fuisse. The atmosphere was lively due to Restaurant Week. Service was very good even though the restaurant was crowded.

Romantic Dinner Suprise
Every year I try and find some where special to take my boyfriend. This place was recomended by a friend that knows my taste and it did not dissapoint. He loved the fact that it was warm and cozy as we were seated near the fire place. He also loved that although we were in the heart of Richmond, it felt like a get away as the inside did not have a "chain" like dining appearance. His New York strip steak was cooked a little well then he would have preferred so although tasty it was a little chewy. My crab cakes were divine and the presentation was wonderful. We plan to go back and enjoy their happy hour and lobster night some time soon

The portions were just right and everything was cooked to perfection.

Restaurant Week Favorite
We both had the house white wine which was a nice generous pour of Estrella chardonnay. It was an excellent choice. My husband had the fried green tomatoes and I had the beet arugula salad and both were excellent. Our entrees arrived as we were eating the last bite of our appetizer. The shrimp and rice dish was delicious and my crab cakes were perfect, served with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The key lime dessert was also the perfect ending. We had a little table next to the window and a fireplace that provided a great atmosphere.

Richmond Restaurant Week - Carytown
We wanted to go to a restaurant we had never tried before for Richmond Restaurant Week and made a reservation at Water Coastal Kitchen; we were very happy with our choice. We arrived about 20 minutes earlier than our reservation and were seated promptly. The service was very attentive and friendly. The special prix fixe dinner menu had several nice options. My wife selected the fried green tomatoes (outstanding) as her appetizer and the crab cakes (very good) for her entree. I chose a caesar salad (nothing special) and the grilled pork chop (very tasty - accompanied by mashed potatoes and buttered apples). The desserts (creme brulee and pumpkin roll) were a nice way to finish the meal. We will definitely go back again!

Work with allergies
Now more and more restaurants are working w/food allergies, but these guys were GREAT!! They took very good care of me.
Attentive wait staff, they let us move when our space was invaded by a large, happy group that was a bit too loud for our foursome.
Suggest this restaurant for sure!

I had heard my friends talking this place and the Tues. night lobster special and had yet to visit. I wanted to celebrate my beau's birthday in a special way, so we went. We were seated upstairs in a romantic setting overlooking the outside and downstairs. The food was impeccable! We shared the she crab as our appetizer, then lobster tail w/ crab cake (yummy) and the iron cast filet migeon (best ever) which was all incredibly great! The staff was very friendly and accommodating, the prices were very reasonable and the atmosphere was romantic, which fit our needs perfectly. We will definitely return, my birthday is in a couple of weeks so I am already hinting I want to go. This is truly a hidden gem so if you haven't tried it this is a must!

A gem in Carytown
I came here for brunch after the Richmond Half Marathon. We were seated upstairs and it was nice and quiet. The food was great, the mimosas were good, and the waiter knew the menu very well and was able to give several great recommendations.
The redneck benedict was a fantastic dish. This place has a very upscale feel with very affordable prices.

Good food, great company.
I dined here with a few friends for a 'girls night' and we enjoyed it. We sat in a cozy little room with a fire, the food was good, and our server was great. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

2nd time back
The overall experience was very good, they were a little short staffed and we had to wait longer than our last visit for a server to approach us. When he did, we found out he was in-training and we were his first table, so overall it was understandable. We will return again.

Wine prices were on the high end and the wines were only fair

we were first seated up stairs by a very drafty ceiling vent and moved downstairs next to a gas fireplace. it was wonderful. Great ambiance. The food was so good that my husband, who got the Sesame encrusted Tuna, and rarely finishes a meal, enjoyed it so much he the remainders home and had another meal of it.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
We were lucky enough to be there on Monday night...Oyster Night! Great oyster specials and the food was great. Our landlocked out of town guest were thrilled and loved it.

Good but not as good as before
Had dinner here - my second visit. Service was good but my meal (fried oysters) was not as good as I the dish was about a year before. Three of our party who also had seafood said theirs was above average but not spectacular - one entree (a skewer with fish and steak) looked a bit dessicated. My son had a steak that was fabulous. Maybe the chef has changed? at any rate a restaurant that specializes in seafood ought to be able to prepare it better.
