Romance and Comfort Under One Roof!
Comfort food at its best. Romantic evening destination with a casual, low-lit atmosphere. Service is top drawer. Reasonably priced for the location. Hint: Request an upstairs table when making your reservation.

This restaurant was recommended
This restaurant was recommended by my son who was there a few weeks ago with some co workers. We had a group of 8 also co workers and the food was amazing. Great comfort food, great surroundings and a wonderful staff! Have already recommended it to other coworkers and look forward to going back!

We enjoyed our food very much.
We enjoyed our food very much. They serve comfort food such as the delicious mushroom barley soup. Also the salmon sliders and chicken wrap were quite tasty. The portions were good and we enjoyed the nice atmosphere.

Great foodie find!
My friend and I were blown away by the food right up to dessert. Everything we ordered, simple though it was, was divine! My mouth is still savoring the ricotta butternut squash bruschetta. The cocktails weren't as exceptional especially for the price but I still enjoyed them very much. We were also tended to by our server on a timely basis. The reason I gave this a 4 is because we were seated by a rather large, loud group of girls and it was disruptive to our evening. I know the restaurant can't totally be held accountable butttt I felt it was worth mentioning.

An old friend
This restaurant for MANY years has consistently been wonderful. Fresh foods, great specials and one of the few places that does all meals perfectly. The homey atmosphere is a throwback and it is comforting to be in an established neighbor spot.

Highly recommend their meatloaf! So delicious and an unexpected thing to order when you're out.

Known for its large portions
Known for its large portions at reasonable prices, this place is the mecca for hungry students and young professionals.

Quaint & hearty
A lovely place in a lovely neighborhood. Rustic and cute old house with a upstairs, downstairs and outdoor seating. They start you off with a big square of corn bread with homemade apple sauce. We had a piping hot chicken pot pie with a lattice top and a chicken club sandwich on thick fresh baked honey wheat bread. We also had an all crab crab cake - delicious! We were stuffed and relaxed!

We had the chicken wrap and
We had the chicken wrap and matzo ball soup. Both were good. We were disappointed that they ran out of split pea soup. They were busy during lunchtime so service was a bit slow.

Friend of "Friend of a Farmer"
I've been coming to Friend of a Farmer for years. It's a reliable treasure in the heart of Irving Place. Conveniently located, the menu is seasonal and oh so savory. I usually get my Chicken Artichoke salad and it never fails. Served with a side of red peppers and kale, it'll fill you up and keep you steady through dinner. Make room for desserts, they are decadent and enough for 2-3. The atmosphere is inviting, very rustic country. One would never think they were in NYC judging from the decor. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A great place to indulge for any occasion.

Really Nice Cozy Spot
Great food, great atmosphere- only complaint is that the service was a little spotty. No personality in the server or runner, and even though we were sitting enjoying coffee at the end of the meal, and they definitely were trying to move us along with the bill, etc. Other than that, a really nice time.

This was a great place to eat I had the chicken pot pie and it was amazing

Went for late lunch (2pm). We stayed until about 6pm and nobody tried to get us to leave! Food very good as it always is. Definitely recommended.

nice dinner for two old friends
It was a gorgeous night and we sat outside. I had the salmon broiled and it was delicious. Only wish I had enough room for dessert. Also enjoyed some nice Champagne and the chamomile citrus tea was very tasty.

Food and ambience was fantastic.
Food and ambience was fantastic. However, I am not sure what was up with our service. They "set the table" for six and when we sat we were missing untensils. Then the waitress gave us the dessert menu before the table was cleared. They forgot the candle for my mothers cake and several times we had to ask for utensils because they either took them away or forgot enough for desert. Also my dad received the wrong side. It was just annoying having to ask for stuff all the time.

We've been here many times and are pleased each & every time. Everything is fresh and well prepared. Always worth the trip! I wish they would reopen a Lomg Island location. Miss the Roslyn restaurant!

It seems like Friend Of A Farmer has been around a long time and I hope it never leaves the neighborhood. I know it has a terrific brunch scene and the dinner menu is filled with wonderful comfort food (chicken, meatloaf, etc.). It's the kind of food you expect mom or grandma to make and as such, will make you feel warm inside when you eat it.

Great Lunch Experience
A special find hidden on Irving Place. Great food, decor, ambience. Omelets are a treat, served in the pan with home-fried potatoes.

Great Neighborhood Find
I've been to this restaurant many times and enjoy it every time. The food is consistently good and the service is excellent. Can't wait to come back soon.

Not the cheapest place but everything was lovely. Get the pancakes!
8/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
The breakfast was very good, especially the buttermilk blueberry pancakes. Just wish there was 4 instead of 3 and maybe even a little larger. They were that good! The home made sausage was fair; a little heavy on dry spices instead of fresh, ground, roasted, fennel seed. The bacon was much better, and the syrup was very fresh. A little NY state fresh honey would have been an outstanding alternative offering. The outside patio is a gem in this neighborhood and the service was very attentive. The wheat bread was also home made, but too dense and did not have that sweet accent when toasted. They are only a short but focused distance from being one of the best of the Flatiron Eastside.

Have been here for brunch several times and meals & service have always been great. Love their salads and omelettes!

Delicious country cooking
I stumbled upon this restaurant walking around the area. It is delicious. There were so many choices on the menu, I know I'll have to go back and try more. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful.

Seasonal, Fresh, Homey
Friend of a farmer is a little like walking up to a farmer's cottage being offered a table near the hearth and a helping of the farm's freshest seasonal fare. The only caveat, you're not on a farm, the door step is just a few blocks off Union Square. From classic comfort food to original specials to deliciously healthy options.

Great place for catching up!
Always reliably good food. And they let you sit forever (over five hours in our case!)

I took my mom here while we
I took my mom here while we were visiting the city and loved it. My mom is a picky eater and doesn't like a lot of frills when it comes to dining. I was able to satisfy her and get some great food myself. I thought the atmosphere was great and really enjoyed our experience.

Shared a variety of appetizers and sides. Enjoyed it all. Crab cakes were out standing.

Great fall and winter place. Truly comfort food. Everything was fresh and delicious.

I have been here many times before. Their brunch is extraordinary. I am a vegetarian and my options are rather limited for lunch. I wish there were some more interesting options. I think they always do something interesting, I just wish I had more choices.

A very nice and pleasant atmosphere
The atmosphere was very homey and the food was quite good - the name is very apt. The service was very relaxed, which was nice - it wasn't slow but I never felt rushed, and that is a difficult balance to find.
My only criticisms are that we were in a corner (which was great) but it was darker than the rest of the room and reading the menu was difficult, and the music was a bit too loud so we had to shout a bit to have a conversation (this could again be due to the location of the table with respect to speakers???).

Great menu and flexibility
We all enjoyed our meals Wait staff was accommodating to special requests. It is a fun place.

Could've been at the Harvest!
True to its name, the ambience at Friend of a Farmer makes you feel like you just walked into a old New England farmhouse with period furniture and bins of fresh produce as accessories. The menu was refreshing with plentiful salad choices and hearty vegetable appetizers. We loved the fish selection which offered various preparations of multiple fish. For the meat lovers, there were unusual preparations of duck and pork and the standard NY strip. The staff were patient as I waited 45 minutes for my friend to arrive and served us promptly when she did. I wish we had time to sample the desserts. Guess I will have to return for that!

Great Dinner but watch the service
Reservation for two for dinner, and loved the chicken pot pie and the corn bread that comes with every meal! The meal would have been great however, my strict vegetarian dining mate was served the beef sliders, despite ordering (and even asking about) the vegetarian sliders. She bit into the beef sliders before realizing. I thought the service could have been much more apologetic for the severe mistake. They did end up comping us for the sliders, but we had to point out the mistake to our server twice before they did so, and it took a while after we were given our food to flag down our server.

Great hearty food. The bar
Great hearty food. The bar scene downstairs is great and the food was fresh. Perfect for a winter time dinner out.
