Dining Event Not just a great meal
Whenever a restaurant has a Michelin star my expectation goes way up... With Commis you leave feeling like "they deserve it." Every one of the eight dishes (I think it was eight...) was spot on. Gorgeous presentation, vibrant flavors, delish but not rich. Definitely worth the wine pairing. This is a foodies delight.
I understand the interior austerity - the focus is on the food - but would have liked just a bit more warmth and noise reduction. The next time I dine here it will be with one other, not three others, and I'll sit at the Chef's counter. Looking forward to whenever that is!

Lovely dining experience
It was not just dinner it was an experience. It was two and a half hours of beautiful food. Not just the food but the plating each of the seven courses was better then the last with the expect ion of the desert. We did the wine pairing and it was not that great. The wines were interesting but did not always work with the dish. It is a place to go for a special occasion.

Good food, service excellent
my wife and i went with our 9 year old who did the tasting menu. the food was quite good, the service was impeccable. i did the wine pariings, and those were really great, an excellent value. i look forward to coming back.

Even though I am somewhat suspect of restaurants that don't tell you what is on their menu, I enjoyed my taste experience at Commis. Each plate was presented wonderderfully. The order of the courses was well thought out. the only call out is a personal dislike of oysters. I didn't realize they were going to be serving them, so was a bit disappointed with that dish but it was very well presented and the entire dish was balanced.

The food is delicious but can be a little precious at times. The two female servers were extremely cold and unfriendly. The male staff were a lot nicer and friendlier.

fantastic food - very formal
We think of Commis when we want a quiet high-end romantic dinner. The quality of their tasting menu never disappoints us. Each small course is really interesting and the wine pairings are unusual and outstanding. The emphasize seafood and veggies. You don't see much red meat. Over the years the service has become very formal.

once again an excellent meal!
commis is one of the food wonders of the east bay...every time it gets better, more inventive, yummier, sparkling....and watching the cooks plate the food is a fantastic extra...
we will be back again and again...
and it is a truly great value for the wonderful food and service...

This restaurant puts Oakland on a par with San Francisco's best dining.
Because it is so good and so expensive, it makes the small shortcomings stand out. So I would note this:
1. There is nowhere to wait if your table is not ready. My wife has trouble standing for long periods, and she had to go back to the car to sit and wait for me to signal her. No bench or chairs inside or out.

Skillful and innovative gastronomy
Probably one of the best meals I have had in the US so far.
Very inventive and, above all, intelligent dishes. There is a real signeture oif the chef throughoutt the meal, includning 2 or 3 dishes that were truly exceptional, world-class efforts.
Very nice wine menu, although the wine by the glass program should be a little bit elaborate (2 whites and 2 reds only).

Commis fabulous as usual
hadn't been back since my child was born three years ago... came back this week using an elaborate plan to surprise my hubby... which worked beautifully. the meal was excellent overall.... but the scallops with chamomile infusion foam was to die for... along with my desert that had basil iced shavings. couldn't resist snapping pics of the lovely arrangements and sending them to the family friends who were babysitting... staff was friendly and professional. sat at the chef's table which was entertaining and informative fun

Always great food and service!
The staff is amazing from the time you enter till the end of your meal. Food is amazing, and changes often which keeps us going back for more, and this makes the food experience much more enjoyable. The staff explains each course and wine well. The wine pairing complimented the food very well. We truly enjoy our dining experience each time we visit, and some of the staff recognizes us.

technically perfect but lacking
Commis is technically perfect yet almost all the dishes seemed to be missing something in terms of flavour.
While others have mentioned having 8 or 10 courses we were served 7 course. Each showed excellent technique and the very best ingredients yet most are not exceptional in terms of flavours.
With a tasting menu at 85 it's a more affordable option to other tasting menus in the Bay Area but there was a lack of flavour and originality.
The service and decor is best described as cold. The servers reminded me of Michelin restaurants on the East Coast in their black suits but they didn't have the same attention to detail, a they are located in.
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fantastic flavours, a marvellous experience. My only gripe is that the portions were really tiny, even for a tasting menu, such that you don't even feel full after 8 (or 10?) courses, which is quite remarkable. Other than that, decent service, incredible quality and presentaion of food: the attention to detail and the precision with which they plate their food is remarkable.

1 Year Dating Anniversary
My girlfriend and I went here for our one year anniversary and were not disappointed. We are both big fans of good food and wine, and every course they served was delectable. The wine pairings were spot on as well, and we went home satisfied with the quantity of food(sometimes an issue with chef's tasting menus), and with a healthy buzz from the wine. We would recommend!

Tucked away in Oakland, Commis was a wonderful find. My friend and I love chef menus and this place hit our love for food and wine on the head. The service was some of the best in awhile. The pairings were pretty well perfect. I highly recommend this place for foodies.

Food for Thought
The food was fresh, interesting and made my heart and stomach happy. The service was wonderful. Our server was very knowledgeable about wines and helped us pick out a great one to go with our meal. Each plate was pleasing to the eye and creative with their combinations of textures and flavors.

A sublime experience
Every course was a work of art. The length of the meal made my husband and I take some much needed time to relax and really enjoy the meal.
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
truly outstanding meal
Some of the best food I've ever had! Ever! And this is not stuff you could make yourself so you dont have to feel guilty for splurging. These are truly elegant dishes, that are plated beautifully. My only tip/word of caution is in regards to the optional $45 dollar wine pairing.... ALL but one of the wines was white. So if you happen to love white wine, great for you. However, I, like many, prefer red. I wish I would've just purchased a bottle or few glasses of red. The pairings did go nicely, no one can dispute that.
My suggestion would be for them to offer several different options for wine pairings. They could perhaps offer white, red, and mixed flights/pairing. Just a thought.

We've been to Commis more that a few times. The most recent visit was one of our best ever. The food remains inventive, visually appealing, local, and beautifully apportioned. The staff is friendly and accommodating. It's far beyond delightful to visit.

Commis provided the romantic environment that I have come to expect. We brought our own wine, but had a glass of their red with our meat course. The foods, presentations, & serving amounts were wonderful, and the environment was quiet such that we enjoyed each other's conversation unimpeded by the racket that usually accompanies good restaurants. I have come to call it Oakland's mini-French Laundry, except for the price which delighted us!!
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
This a great place for prie fix dining, good food and service. Definitely one of my best dining experience and my top five must eat restaurant.

Lots of Small Portions
Food preparation and service is extraordinary but not recommended for men with big stomachs. Perfect for the ladies.

Not too much, and not too little. Nailed it!

Trip #4 might be the best yet
This is the 4th time my husband and I have been to Commis. After the 3rd time, my interest started to dwindle a bit. However this menu was just staggering to me. A lot of fish was featured and there was a lot more savory/creaminess than previous menus. I am a protein kind of guy so the courses that lack a significant protein tend to bore me (which I felt were predominant in the 2nd and 3rd times we dined here). Wine pairings featured a majority of whites which I was fine with and which paired immaculately with the menu. This was my favorite visit in our 4 trips to the restaurant. Good going, Commis!

Inventive dishes with intense
Inventive dishes with intense flavors packed into small bites. Do not expect to be stuffed if you have a large appetite; however, my wife and I were satisfied with the 3 hour experience. No need for a Fenton's dessert. Memorable dishes: Slow Poached Egg Yolk (Version 2.0), Grilled Sablefish w/a Bonito Foam, and Wild Plum with Tarragon Float (amazing pallate cleaner). The pre fixe dinner was mostly seafood, thus pairings of white wines from Europe. Also enjoyed the restaurant made wheat bread and churned butter (so creamy that it had the consistency of a soft cheese).
Service was professional with appropriate presentation on each course and wine pairing. The level of staff interaction left to the diner.
Ambiance - minimalist decor.

Always better , always unique.
Commis is in the top 5 Bay Area places for fine dining with Chef counter seating that anyone can afford. There are new faces and long time Host-server Todd is just as gracious and wine knowledgeable as they come. I have been here many times and am alwys treated like a rock star. The menu is always sheer joy to see and consume. Lovely Peibmont neighborhood and a temple for great cooking.
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
fantastic tasting menu
We went there for a special occasion and had a wine pairing.
The 8 course menu was well thought and flowed like music with transitions. It was mostly seafood elegantly paired with French wines. Everything was creative but tasted as good as it looks and the portions are small so it's not too much food.
They change tge menu every month so I can't wait to return when I can! They definitely deserve their Michelin star star.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Believe the hype
Our meal was a solid '10' in all aspects. Each course was top notch. Seriously.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Commis is consistently the best dining spot in Oakland. Lovely. Not ostentatious. Nice wines. Friendly staff. Creative food.

An Oakland Gem
This was our second dining experience here. We are experienced foodies and love this place. Last time we sat at the chef's counter and if you do not sit there you are missing 1/2 of the experience.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Highly creative while extending
Highly creative while extending flavor story their fullest. Just complex enough to keep everything intriguing and not confusing. The potato and egg yolk soup with preserved pears was out of this world. Not an extensive wine list but very well chosen. You can really tell that they care about making this an outstanding dining experience.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Thank you CDC Aaron and the superb staff for an exceptional meal for our son's birthday. Everything was perfection- every course and superb wine pairings.

Amazing Food, Stiff Service
This was our second visit. The food was once again interesting, tasty, and gorgeous! Our server was professional and polite, but not warm. We enjoyed the service more last time we went. I think the ambience could be improved if the staff smiled more and didn't take themselves so seriously.
11/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Accessible and inventive
Great meal and would happily recommend to anyone willing to entrust themselves to Commis.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Another memorable meal at Commis
The new seafood menu, with influences from multiple cuisines...absolutely delicious!
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Best in the East Bay
The best in the east Bay. Fresh, innovative, subtle, deserves it's Michelin star. I have been three times and was never disappointed.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had an amazing 8+ course dinner celebrating my birthday over the weekend. Each plate was skillfully prepared and it was delicious and fresh. It had all my favorite seafood ingredients that night (e.g. oysters, mussels, abalone, fish).
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
A Serious Restaurant
This is a serious restaurant from a food point of view, which is good. However, the service staff takes itself too seriously. The space is spartan and the mood is somber, which is not a positive. The truly great restauants (at least in this country) generally go out of their way to make the customer relaxed and maybe even laugh a bit. This is supposed to be a fun occasion. Commis needs to lighten up.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent value and quality
Excellent value and quality for a 10-course dinner. The oyster, mussels and abalone are all superbly prepared, The slow poached egg yolk with warm potato is the best poached eggs I have ever had. The tisane of button mushrooms may be a bit salty for some. The roast squab and dessert pears with celery root mouses also impresses. The wine pairing offers 2 sweets, 4 whites and 2 reds. Reservation was at 8 but our table was not ready. That's understandable but we were kept standing at the entrance for 15 minutes without being offered a chair or a little treat afterward. For a Michelin starred restaurant I was expecting a bit more tact and courtesy in this situation. Overall It was a fine dining experience. Highly recommended.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Amazing, reliably amazing
If you look at all the prix fixe places in the Bay Area you will realize what a miracle it is that James Syhabout and his people can put out a meal of this caliber for only $85.
11/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
Way above its Michelin rating
If your looking for a place to have a memorable experience in the US then this it
12/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Really enjoyed dinning at Commis the other day. Outstanding food at fair price. Only thing would be I wish the service was a bit warmer but still great experience overall.
12/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
A unique dining experience
My husband and I had a wonderful time. Sat at the bar and truly enjoyed watching the chefs master each unique dish. It was fabulous.
12/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
This was my second time dining
This was my second time dining at Commis and I think it was even more delicious and memorable. We skipped the wine pairings this time and got a bottle as recommended by Eden and it was exactly what we were looking for. Great value for this tasting menu!
12/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
Starchy atmosphere, great food
No one eats like this every day, but it is quite an experience- the service was pro, if a little stiff for my taste. I quickly lost track of what each dish was, but they were all creative, interesting, delicious, unusual. Great for a real adventure for your mouth, amusez la bouche!
12/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
My new favorite restaurant
It's as good as the best but with an unpretentious Oakland flair that, for me, makes it a cut above, not to mention a better value than, any high profile foodie mecca you can name. Really, really delightful presentation, execution, and imagination. You definitely have to like the people you're dining with, because the whole experience takes a couple hours, and that's just how it should be -- mammals want to take sustenance together in a ceremonial, celebratory and intimate way! Man what a great restaurant.
12/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Chefs not only make great tasting food, but are also friendly and great food artists.
12/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is our fifth time to Commis in last 5 years. It is getting better and better. Food was superb. And I do not give out that compliment easily.
12/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Commis is simply a delight to visit. Each dinner is a joy. If you go once, you will be charmed. If you return a few times, you will become intrigued by the creativity of the food, the warmth of the staff, and the elegance of the experience. Do go.
