Third time there, and I keep on ordering the same thing--the lamb shank. Unbeatable.

This long standing neighborhood
This long standing neighborhood fixture has only gotten better with age. Middle Eastern food with a gourmet touch, and an elegant and interesting decor, this restaurant always manages to impress.

A great surprise find in DC,
A great surprise find in DC, a few blocks from the subway in a neighborhood setting just off the beaten path. Staff was very helpful in explaining the menu and making up samples. We ended up sharing several main dishes. Outdoor seating would be fun when the weather is warm.

First Middle Eastern Meal a Hit
My first true foray into Middle Eastern cuisine was not a disappointment. Far from it! Started out with Mahshi - grape leaves stuffed with lamb filling with a homemade yogurt sauce. Delicious. Per my server Hanie's suggestion, I abandoned the safe play of lamb chops for Musakan. It's a half chicken on toasted pita bread. Excellently spiced with caramelized onion and pine nuts on top. The sumac season gave it a lemony sourness that played well with the onion, pine nuts and other flavors. The food was fabulous and very reasonable price-wise for a tremendous value!

Still wonderful after many years!
I have been a fan of the restaurant since I lived in D.C in the 70s and 80s. Back then, it was a small basic middle eastern restaurant known as the Calvert Cafe. Mama herself sat outside the kitchen and greeted guests, also reading tea leaves on occasion. My daughter began college in D.C. last Fall, and I immediately introduced her to Mama's. It is now much larger, and beautifully decorated in rich Middle Eastern style. Although the menu has expanded and the prices increased a bit, the food remains the same-- delicious homemade specialities, prepared and served with love. the atmosphere is terrific, great for catching up with family and friends. It has become my daughter's favorite restaurant in D.C., and the tradition continues!

Always a great experience!
Every time I go to Mama Ayesha's I have a great experience. I brought friends here from out of town because the restaurant is such a special spot. The wait staff and ambiance cannot be matched.
The food, starting with falafel hummus and spinach and feta pairs were delicious. The table shared grape leave rolls, cous cous, and lamb shank. We paired it with a wine from Lebanon.
You can't get food like this anywhere else in the city! Thanks Mama Ayesha's!

I brought my parents and sister here during my graduation and it was fantastic. The food was absolutely divine. I especially recommend the babaganoush. Everyone in my family had a lamb dish except me, and they all seemed pleased as well.

Fun mid eastern food
I grew up in the middle east. It's difficult to replicate the fresh ingredients that are used locally in that cuisine, so usually mid eastern food in the US is different in that it lacks the abundance and variety of fresh vegetables. Mama Aisha's is no different. The salads are a reminder that you are still in the mid atlantic, and are generally disappointing. However, in spite of this, most of the dishes still manage to be fun and flavorful, the ambience is pleasant and unique, and the service is always very professional. The restaurant location, in the heart of Adams Morgan, but still away from 18th street, makes it even more appealing. Fun to be back here.

The Kifta Kabob brought back memories when I was a younger man, and my friends and I would eat at Fetoosh in Georgetown. Just as good.

My friends and I have a FINER
My friends and I have a FINER DINERS meal every month. This gem was recommended by an Adams Morgan local and proved to be a god choice. Good food, excellent Martinis, and a older full waiter.

I remember Mama
I have been going to Mama Ayesha's since Mama was alive and it was called the Calvert Cafe. The ambiance has changed, but the food remains wonderful. I didn't have my usual charcoal grilled half chicken, so must go back soon to remedy that.

Unique both in food and atmosphere
A great place for either a romantic evening or a fun night out with a group of friends, Mama Ayesha's is slightly off the beaten path but well worth the trip. The decor is beautiful, the servers treat you like old friends, and the food is outstanding. Especially if you like "Mediterranean" or "Greek" or "Middle Eastern" food (stuffed grape leaves, lamb, kabobs, couscos, baklava, etc.) you will LOVE this place. Instead of hummus, order the Foole M’ Damas (think salsa with fava beans). As for entrees, they're all fabulous! They also have great cocktails and coffee, and an outdoor patio where you can almost always get a seat. Nuff said!!!

Wonderful food and service
As wonderful as I remembered! The charcoal chicken is fantastic. Service was wonderful: friendly and efficient. I always feel like I am the guest that this restaurant was waiting for. A truly special experience (and very reasonable prices!)

Great Lebanese Food
I moved to DC a year ago and was so happy to find this place. I have dinner here regularly as I love Middle Eastern cuisine. I like the ambiance, which is warm and inviting. The food is very good and the prices are reasonable.

Great Service, good food, altho better Middle Eastern cuisine exists for a lower price at Middle Eastern Cafe in Takoma Park, MD. Still, this is a lovely little spot with nice ambiance.

Good Food, Service, and Price
Since I moved here last year, this is a restaurant I go to on a regular basis. The Middle Eastern Food is very good and the service is friendly without being overbearing. The overall ambiance is warm and inviting. And, because the prices are moderate for the area, it is a restaurant that one can afford.

Not Showing Its Age
Mama's has been around over 50 years but with the relatively new -think it was done about 5 years ago- decor make-over, it has great ambience. An eclectic dining room crowd - as diverse as DC. Food is very good: sampling of vegie dishes and the lamb are all very tasty and while portions are not overly large, they are done well and we've been satisfied on our two recent visits. I'd also say that we stayed three hours eating and talking with friends we had not seen in long while and never felt rushed to leave. Wait staff was courteous and efficient.

Tasty for the whole family
We all (aged 2-62) had a great meal. Food is excellent, staff is great, love the family all over the place. Wish there was outdoor seating as the weather was outstanding. Oh well!

Hours Well Spent at Mama's
I hope that Mama Ayesha's will remain a strong, gentle presence in our neighborhood for many years to come. Several old friends from Peace Corps Tunisia days gathered there last week and spent several hours dining on excellent mezze, lamb couscous, good wines in a quiet atmosphere reminiscent of earlier times in Tunisia at the Café de Paris on Avenue Bourguiba. The flowing water fountain is a lovely touch, as well as the Arabian/Andalousian music playing softly in the background. This place takes you back to an historic past that hasn't been forgotten and hopefully will live on.

I ate at Mama Ayesha's after a 40 year absence! I had forgotten about it until the restaurant was featured in the Wash Post weekend guide over the summer. The meal was just as yummy as I remembered it. Is you enjoy Middle Eastern food - GO. I is a great value foe the money.

Came across Mama Ayesha's
Came across Mama Ayesha's as we were walking by, so decided to stop for dinner. The restaurant was very quiet, but we were early. Service was attentive and friendly. we started with hummus, followed by a mixed grill and squash stuffed with lamb and rice. The food was cooked brilliantly -- we'll definitely return!

Relaxed, Good Food, Helpful Service
Able to get a Friday night reservation on Friday night, near the Woodley Park Metro, well organized menu, waiter helpful in matching and sequencing small plates, combination of dishes created well-balanced flavors. One wine label in each category available by the glass (alas, no draft beers); great place to have a normal-decibel conversation.

Wonderful food, friendly staff
The food here is really wonderful. Even the little picky eaters devoured everything that was set in front of them (except for the falafel which was a little spicy but very very good). The wait staff were all friendly and attentive especially to the little ones. All the dishes were great - from the baked chicken dishes to the lamb shank to the kebabs.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lacking sparkle and pizzazz
Items come out of the kitchen quickly and the staff makes you feel like you never left home. That's the good news. The bad news is the dishes are all uninspired and compared to other Middle Eastern restaurants, there's no finesse to the cooking. That special something extra that makes good food great is missing. We wanted to appreciate the special effort that went into making our food. We didn't taste it. Drinks were weak, appetizers were just average, and main courses were just not up to snuff. Don't know if it was an off night or if Mama Ayesha has tired, burnt out cooks who don't care anymore. Management should taste what's being preparing and being sent out of the kitchen and then decide what steps need to be taken.

How could we have waited so long to enjoy this restaurant! It is superb! We will be back again and again.

Mama Ayesha's--2 for 2
I've been to Mama Ayesha's twice, both for somewhat special occasions. Once was when I first arrived in DC and my family took me here, and the other was this past weekend when my girlfriend and I celebrated 6 months of being together.
The first time was a while ago, so it's a little blurred in my memory, but the second time is fresh and I absolutely loved it. The food was delightfully flavorful, the waiter was attentive and prompt if not the chattiest fellow around, and the wine I ordered was great. Definitely worth it. The seating wasn't what I would have preferred--it was a Friday night, and we were sat in a row of tables for 2--but it wasn't a deal-breaker by any means.

Many small portions that are very resaonbly priced, allowing a very good sampling. Many vegetarian choices. Service very fast and well timed

We'll be back
We are relatively new to DC and have enjoyed Mama Ayesha's several times. It's one of the few places around that is nicely atmospheric, with good food, and a decibal level that allows for conversation with new people! The service is always helpful and attentive and the food delicious.

Relaxed setting, great food!
I love going to Mama Ayesha's because I can have a relaxed meal, hear my conversation, and still feel that I'm going somewhere special. The food is great, the ambiance is lovely and the service is top notch.

what a find!
I spend time searching for authentically good restaurants, and this is my find in DC. What a lovely place. Easy to get to, parking on site...food amaing, warm atmosphere. This is not a "hip / cool place"...which generally means great design, mediorcre food and poor service. Mama Ayesha has history, charm, warmth, great professional service and delciious food. What more do you need? I will return again and again.
