7th Anniversary Dinner
This dinner was a surprise 7th anniversary gift to my husband. We have two small children. While we enjoy great food and wine, we rarely treat ourselves to what we would consider a fancy meal. We loved it. The service was excellent, the view incredible, and the food outstanding. We appreciated the wine pairings with each part of the meal. Our only criticism is not really a complaint, as it led to an even more interesting experience - We overheard the entirety of the conversation happening at the next table. Luckily the group included a local restaurant owner, so listening to him was interesting. We loved the whole experience, and while we'll need to start saving up now, we'll be back.

Thank you for making our 11th anniversary extra special!!

Classy & relaxed, great experience
The wife and I were impressed by the food, service, and design of the Meritage. We haven't been to the hotel in years, and it has been updated beautifully. The bartender and servers were excellent all around, and the piano lounge vibe was a nice touch. The food was excellent. We had the oysters, scallops, and filet mignon - all smaller portion sizes, all cooked perfectly - along with some other side dishes, and the souffle for dessert was just right. We will definitely be back.

One of the most memorable dining experiences of my life. I was seeing my best friend from college for the first time in ages. There was much to catch up on: our families, our work, the joys and sorrows of life. From the moment we were led to our seats, it was quite apparent this was a spot beyond. The food defied all expectations, our very high expectations notwithstanding. Any attempt to describe the food would result in a novel. Suffice to say, there was not wrong morsel or sip. And the service was superlative. If you have a special occasion, and would like to include the fantastic ritual of doing so around a meal, Meritage is one of the best choices out there.

We celebrated Father's Day with a delicious brunch at the Claremont and it was just what we hoped for.
The room is large and the window seats offer an incredible view of San Francisco.
The food choices are vast and tasty, with Omlettes cooked to order, waffles, salads, fresh fruit, and dim sum. There is a large table filled with chilled shrimp and crab. Also there is Prime Rib and Baked Ham.
The bottomless mimosas certainly added to the festive atmosphere and service was great.
We will defi Italy return.

love the brunch
we had a great brunch, from the wide selections of appetizers to the desserts everything was wonderful !!!!

Wonderful Sunday brunch
We took my husband to brunch for Fathers Day (on Sunday) and it was amazing. We really enjoyed ourselves. We didn't realize brunch started at 10am though, and we had 9:30am reservations (for breakfast only)... so we had to wait a little bit before we could hit the brunch line. No worries though, we sipped mimosas and had good conversation. ;)
The food was very fresh and very good. We stuffed ourselves and kept going back. My favorite was the waffles. Amazing desserts too. We will definitely be returning!

We had a great time in a great place. The service was second to none. All staff was focused on customer service. A real pleasure. And the Deluge at the Spa, FANTASTIC!!! We will be back.......

Brunch food was all so very delicious from breakfast items to a meat station to a pastry station. The servers were all very attentive. Not being placed at a table with a view when there was one available the whole time there was a little disappointing. This is old time grand, maybe a little stuffy, and I can like stuffy at times. I would recommend it for something VERY special that would make it worth the $60 per person.

Consider the Claremont
My wife and I celebrated our anniversay and we could not have been more pleased. The wait staff in particular was naturally friendly and accommodating; not rehearsed as so many hotel staff come across. They earnestly wanted to make it a special evening for their guests. The food and wine pairings were excellent. The smaller serving options were meant for us; since we are not drinkers the smaller pour was perfect and the appitizer portions allowed us to sample other meals. The Meritage stays on our list as a preferred choice in the East Bay.

eritage - a five star restaurant
The food and service were superior and our waiter was very attentive to our every need. For example, when the complimentary demitasse cup of cream soup arrived, my guest mentioned she is lactose intolerant, so almost immediately, a special soup with spring vegetables arrived for her. The portion sizes of the appetizer sizes were perfect for sharing, quite generous for one person, and allowed me to order several items at less than half the cost of the entree size. The perfect portion sizes; very fresh local ingredients, the total experience left me convinced I will be back again for other special dining occasions.

As always, the Claremont is our favorite place to go back and visit! We were married there in 2010 and we try to go back at least twice a year. The waiters, the hosts, and everyone on the staff greets us every time with a smile. We love the Claremont!

Colorful & beautifully presented
Colorful & beautifully presented plates, with an option for small or large portions. The tastes are exquisite. Dining here is a pleasure and feels like quite the indulgence although the prices are comparable to other fine dining establishments. Do check with the waiter about items as some dishes have a surprising twists, such as the roasted chicken. The salads are simply sublime and the chef works magic with fresh vegetables.

A Hit for our Anniversary
My husband and I dined at the Meritage on July 31st for our 25th anniversary. We had a table by the window and enjoyed the stunning views of Berkeley and San Francisco. The ambience was great and the service was wonderful (special props to our waiter Caesar who looked after our every need.) The menu was a bit confusing as every dish could be served as an appetizer or entree portion. So you could choose to do the normal appetizer and entree or try a variety of small plates. Our beet salad was absolutely delicious, with a beautiful mix of flavors. I chose the lamb entree and it was some of the best lamb I've had -- perfectly cooked. Wine pairings were suggested for each dish, and the suggested Cabernet pairing with the lamb spot on.

My wife and I dined at this restaurant this past Saturday and had an excellent experience. I had the filet mignon and my wife had the salmon, both were delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a delicious meal in a comfortable atmosphere.

Delightful dinner out
The prices were fairly high for small-to-moderate portions (as often happens in hotel restaurants), but the dishes were creative and delicious. Excellent wine pairings as well.

Meritage - this is dining!
Dining at Meritage at the Claremont is always an elegant experience. The gourmet menu, attentive service and refined ambience all contribute to the exceptional "evening out". Yes, it is "pricey", but then you are not going there too often and it is worth it for those special occasions!
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
very good, but
Food was excellent -well prepared, quite inventive. Waiter was very knowledgeable about the plates, and able to answer questions relating to the food allergy of one of the party. The wine list was extensive, almost all California - and no one could answer any questions or offer suggestions about the wines. Very strange non-knowledge of the wine list by the staff, since even in most smaller, less fancy restaurants in the region the server has tried many of the wines and has good advice. Why have an extensive wine list (of generally smaller vineyards) if there is no one around to describe the choices?
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good but Not Jordan's
We hadn't dined at the Claremont since the Meritage evolved from Jordan's. My son had well seasoned pork loin, my wife had a dish featuring some quite flavorful procuitto, and I had a good but not special sirloin steak. The price was a little lower ($270 w/tip and wine for 3 of us) than its predecessor, and the food reflected some reasonably well executed creative flare. However, several dishes were a bit bland, portions were adequate but no more, and the service somewhat forgetful. The menu also seemed a bit more limited than in the past. The wine list was extensive, but over priced. So it was a decent upscale meal, but we won't look forward as we once did to a top of the line dinner at the Claremont.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was to be a romantic evening, and except for the fact that the -very pleasant--waiters were overworked and that we were seated next to the kitchen entry with a constant coming and going, it almost became that way. The food was delicious, we liked the suggestions of wine/food pairings but missed an expected selection of 'unadulterated' fresh vegetables at this time of year, the height of the season. The description of every single vegetable item on the menu that day came across as being dowsed in butter/oil/fat of some sort. A SIMPLE vegetable would have been a great foil for the rich main dishes, much better than a side of mashed potatoes. We left feeling full rather than pleasantly satiated. Food for thought for the chef/s, we hope.

Put on Your List for Fine Food
Took the family there for a celebration. This restaurant serves outstanding food (ahi & watermelon -- quite remarkable; chocolate souffle -- don't pass up if you like this kind of dessert), provides wonderfully attentive service (Cesar) and has created a casual, but very nice atmosphere.
I dine out a lot when traveling and this matches virtually any restaurant that I've eaten at. You'll have to adjust to the menu layout a bit but once you figure it out, it works. Definitely worth a reservation -- the iconic hotel is a very nice bonus.

Elegant dining in Berkeley
Exquisite atmosphere and elegant dining experience. The service was very good. A formal, beautifully appointed dining area.
The menu and wine list were superb selections. The food was prepared well and arranged artistically on the china.
A very good experience, particularly for a special occasion or for a romantic evening out.

We came to the Meritage to have an intimate family dinner to remember my father , who had recently passed away. Everything was lovely, and we had a great experience. I only gave the food 4 stars because a couple of the members of our party were disappointed in the portion size of their choices - and they had ordered the full size portion, not the appetizer. The size of my choice (salmon) was fine, even included a small salad, but the members who ordered beef and ahi tuna were all disappointed at the "several bites" they were served - though all agreed that the food itself was excellent. We live in the area, so I am sure we will be back for another special occasion.

We celebrated our anniversary at the Claremont and had dinner at the Meritage. Very enjoyable dining experience. The food was outstanding and the service matched.

The restaurant is very good,
The restaurant is very good, but what is really outstanding is the view. It overlooks the bay and the city in the distance, really beautiful!

Great view, very good food!
We enjoyed a booth with view of the Bay and San Francisco. Gloating Northwestern fans were in purple, everywhere! And it was Labor Day weekend, to boot! The fruit (variety of melons, grapes, strawberries), the salads (grilled peaches, an endive and pecan/blue cheese salad) and the fish (two kinds of salmon- baked and smoked- plus smoked trout) were very tasty and fresh.
The dim sum were not special, and I won't have them again, here. Not sure how "international" or "artisanal" the cheeses were, but some of the salumi was very good, and the roasted vegetables, too. We did not have waffles or omelets (made to order, line was always a bit long to wait). We did have tirimisu, red velvet cake, carrot cake for dessert. Tip the piano player!

Great place to bring clients
Very nice view of the Bay Bridge/SF - elegant but not too formal; great service; and tasty/delectable food. We brought our clients here and it was the perfect classy and classic place to dine together.

My wife and I celebrated our one month wedding anniversary at the Meritage this week. The service was impeccable. Andrew, the manager, personally greeted us and even brought us glasses of wine. Robert was great throughout the evening as well. We will be returning soon for dinner!

Some might say that the Meritage
Some might say that the Meritage is classical or 'old-school' but when it comes to the service, ambience and overall quality of experience, that's definitely a plus! Not the very most modern food, but excellent, consistent food across all the courses, good wines, unmatchable view and a nice place for a special occasion date.

Great ambience, view of the city lights, bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Great food, 1/2 portions available. Subtle piano music:) Service is outstanding.

For our anniversary I took my wife out for a nice dinner. First of all I love this hotel. It's a historical treasure in our back yard. Every person working at the hotel and restaurant treated us great. The food was excellent! We aren't drinkers but they did have an extensive wine list. Not a cheap meal but very high quality.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Tasty food but pricey. There
Tasty food but pricey. There are small sizes offered, but they are quite small. Convenient location for us and we like the ambiance.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
For that special person or occasion
The food, service, ambience, and scenic view make brunch at the Meritage a memorable experience!
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
I chose the Meritage because I wanted to treat myself to an awesome meal without traveling across the Bay Bridge. The staff was outstanding. The pairing menu had great options. I asked the waiter for suggestions and I wasn't disappointed by his choices. The champagne and oysters were very, very good. The scallops were the best I've had and the filet mignon melted in my mouth. The chocolate souffle was decadent.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
We wanted a restaurant with something extra to celebrate three birthdays. But the restaurant needed to be quiet, well relatively, and have excellent food. The Meritage provides both and more. Plus the view, especially at sunset, is great and the staff is terrific.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Another Delicious Dinner at Meritag
We especially appreciate the two-size plates. We enjoy having two appetizer sizes of something tasty instead of a larger main, and the pairings with lovely wine suggestions are most helpful. Always a treat to eat at Meritage.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
We really appreciated the "half-portion" choices on the menu - that size serving was perfect for us since we were visiting and couldn't take home a "doggie bag".
Filet and mushrooms were delicious!
Sat in a lovely booth - beautiful view of the bay and sunset.

Moonlight and Wine
Waiter was awesome. My dinner date was running late and he reassured me to relax and just enjoy. Service, recommendations, wine and good parings and dessert all top notch.

My experience on last Sunday at the Meriage Claremont Hotel was absolutely amazing!
Old acquaintance with friends became knew again!! I had not seen these four ladies in seven years, our love for one another was rekindled and magnifying! We shared old stories and knew ones. Laughed a lot and shaded happy tears too...
I have been in the Bay Area for many years and had not visited the Claremont Hotel for their brunch, Last Sunday was my very first time and I will visit again and recommend friends to do the same. What a treat and the food was delicious with great presence and flavor.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Service was exceptional. Very old school waiters who were very particular about placements of dishes and timing of food. Mentioned I was making reservations for a special birthday and was given a great table with a view. Was brought classy birthday dessert free of charge. Great wine selection paired with meals. Piano in background. Would recommend this to people who enjoy old fashioned ways of dining.

Food was superb! Wait staff
Food was superb! Wait staff (Robert) was friendly and helpful without being overbearing. Wonderful evening!

Our group birthday celebration
We were staying at the Claremont for a friend's birthday. We had dined at Paragon many times but had never dined at Meritage. The restaurant was beautiful, the view of the bay was gorgeous, as always and the service was top notch. I haven't eaten out much this past year due to major surgery so was a bit disappointed by the richness of the food. I know that heart healthy seems to have gone to the wayside over comfort food. My 3 friends LOVED their food so I am wondering if my disappointment in the richness of the food is my being "out of step" with the shift over the year+ time. All in all, we had a wonderful time. Loved the calamari and butter lettuce salad and soufflé!
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
The pre appetizer soup was fabulous, wish I had known of it...I would have ordered it as an appetizer! Loved the cauliflower salad, amazing. Beautiful presentation, very much appreciate being able to choose a size. Butternut squash tortellini was just okay, rather bland.

Meritage at the Claremonet
Very fine food. Impeccable, not obtrusive, service.
11/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
I booked a time and the staff was super helpful in my proposal plans, at the end they brought us a great desert and the service was awesome, my fiancee was thrilled with the venue and the menu
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
The servers Armir and Mario were excellent. They picked up the plates and as soon as they were emptied and didn't let them build up. They gave great customer service like in the good ole days when people were catered to. I'm in my early 40's and I really appreciated the service. The food was good especially the dim sum and prawns.
