Great for intimate dinner party!
We had a fabulous experience at Chou Chou, where we celebrated a birthday with eight friends and family. The restaurant accommodated our special request for a larger space, as two of our guests are exceedingly tall over 6 feet). The food was very enjoyable and the service was perfect--very attentive and friendly, as if you were having a dinner party at your own home but with help! Thanks for the great evening!

There were only 2 waiters and we think they were surprised to have so many people stream into the restaurant early on a Sunday so the service was slow. But the food was delicious ...crisp salad with flavorful dressing ... filet cooked perfectly ... scallops absolutely mouthwatering as well as the beef bourgonoin (sp?)

Big portions and Great Food
This place is quite small; however, it pales in comparison to the food. We ordered a appetizer dish of mussels, which in itself, could be considered a main course, but it was absolutely delicious to say the least.
The mussels were creamy and the broth was amazing, not overly salty or heavy in cream; just perfect balance and amazing with some bread.
I had the hanger steak which was cook beautifully: it was juicy and required nothing more. My girlfriend at the Canard Duck Wellington. Might I say, the duck meat was tender off the bone. She was able to eat that dish with just a fork; however, the meat was packed with flavor.
Overall, I've was really satisfied with the food and has always been. This happened to be my second time.

Almost like being in Paris
Both the decor, the scrumptious food and the long hours we lingered at the table (even though the restaurant became full) reminded me of Paris.
The pesto salmon and the duck confit were amazing. The Creme Brulee equalled what I've eaten in Paris. And the baguette was as close to a Parisian one as you can find here.
The staff genuinely wanted us to have a wonderful dining experience.

Loved the french onion soup. All food was delightfully prepared. Excellent service- better than expected service for SF. Free corkage on Thursdays. Perfect place to celebrate our anniversary.

Relaxing neighborhood gem
Good creative food- had duck leg Wellington that was scrumptious, juicy, balanced with mushroom stuffing, and delicate sauce. Started with huge bowl of tasty steamed mussels. Fresh made apricot tart was nice finish. Attentive service. Quiet, relaxing ambiance.

Lovely Sunday night dinner
We had a group of 6 at ChouChou on a Sunday night, some of whom had already had dinner. Our waiter still treated them fine (they each ordered just an appetizer) while dealing with the rest of us. I have to have gluten-free food and they recommended and served a nice dish (seared scallops) that was tasty and fit within my dietary restrictions. My daughter loved the hanger steak with blue cheese sauce. Everyone who had the onion soup made happy noises.
This is a small restaurant tucked away in St. Francis Woods. If I'm in the area again, I will definitely go again.

great food and service
Traditional French food served in large portions and with very attentive service. We went to spend an evening with old friends we hadn't seen in a while. Very quiet atmosphere for conversation -- sometimes hard to find in a restaurant these days. We'll definitely be back.

66th B Day at Chou Chou
Where do you take your 89 yr old Mom for your 66th BDay ? Chou Chou of course. Having been raised by my French "Nana" this is the closest to her home cooking I've found. Authentic French comfort food. So of course i have to take her daughter (my Mom) there for dinner. Parking is easy but hard to get to; swing down to Forrest Hill Station and make a U turn back to the restaurant. A real neighborhood find ! Prices are reasonable; food is delicious.

Excellent Neighborhood Restaurant
We've been eating there for several years. The food and service have remained consistently high. I don't really think the staff recognizes us but they greet us as if they do. Sometimes we eat at home but go there for dessert. Their fruit tarts are the best I've found in this country. Their wines are exceptional, too. (Although I admit that I eat more tarts than drink wines.) It can get a little loud when the room is full, but the food is more than worth that slight annoyance. This is a terrific restaurant.
8/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is excellent, the service too. It is one of our favorite little French Bistros.

Wonderful Neighborhhood Gem
This restaurant changed owners -a few month ago. The food is much better and they now have a faiux pre menu in addition to their regular menu, which makes for a reasonable evening. They have also removed a few of the tables so you are not sitting so close together as in the past.. The noise level was pretty low, but not all the tables were full.
If you haven't been in for a while - it is a must to try again.

We visited Chouchou for a romantic dinner and we were not disappointed. This is classic French food featuring greatest hits like escargot and filet of sole. While the old school menu might not jive for some the gorgeous food will not disappoint.
Service was extremely friendly and attentive. We were made to feel special and well taken care of while not being intruded on or bothered. Just a great balance.
Food not to miss..
Mushroom ravioli. Seriously, best dish of the night. Perfect pasta with well balanced flavors and textures of cream and mushrooms.
Filet mignon. Perfectly medium (as ordered), tender and sublimely flavorful. The mashed potatoes on the side were salty and creamy, these were pretty amazing.

High-end food without high-end $$$
Worth eating here and easy to get to. Located right at the Forest Hill Muni station. Food is very tasty, and the chef come by the table to make sure we were happy. Huge wine list. The sole and mushroom soufflé were amazing. For dessert, we got the crepes suzette cooked right at table side. Quite a hidden neighborhood gem.

Like a visit to Paris
Charming little French bistro with very authentic, classic French menu and very good service. Sometimes the food can be a bit too rich, but asking for sauces on the side will correct that. Very reasonable prices. You get a Parisian experience at one-third the price and without the "attitude". I'd return anytime. Also nice wines by the glass.

Charming & Romantic
I brought my special guy here as he was looking for a great French restaurant near by. Chou Chou hit the mark for a delightful romantic evening starting with wonderful service. We were given a comprehensive wine list - so hard to pick one! The food was great! From the steak tartar through our entries. The steamed mussels were out of this world! He had the salmon, I had the sole. Both were terrific. Our whole experience was a delight. The prices are most reasonable, as well, which makes it easy to look forward to coming back soon!!

French with local flair
Chou Chou has added dishes beyond onion soup, moules and steak frites that incorporate our local and seasonal ingredients. Nonetheless, the ambiance is Euro-bistro, and we feel like we have been on a little weekender to Paris when we have spent a leisurely evening of dining, chatting and people-watching.

We are so glad Chou Chou is
We are so glad Chou Chou is back up to delicious! Once again, I had the scallops and they are just perfect, beautifully presented in a sauce that is unbelievable. My husband had the hangar steak and thought is was exactly what he wanted. This is a wonderful little restaurant and we are happy that it is practically in our back yard.

My favourite restaurant in the city
This is my kind of dream restaurant.
A simple little French restaurant in a quieter part of town. Great tasty and authentic food with perfect personable service. This time round we had the french onion soup with a thick ooze of cheese on top, and a delicious beef tartare. My wife's filet mignon was perfectly juicy at medium rare. My lamb had barely a hint of gaminess so I know its lamb, but was so tender with a mildly sweet plum that goes very well with the meat. Wish they gave me more of that sauce.
Best part is we didn't have to deal with the crowds. Comes with parking right beside the restaurant, and even if this ~15car lot is full, free street parking right up the street is never hard to find.
I'm sure we'll be back soon enough. :)

GREAT FRENCH RESTAURANT!
I reserved for more than 19 people at Chou chou Bistro and everyone LOVED IT! . We are all from different part of the world BUT what we have in common is OUR LOVE FOR GOOD FOOD! :) :)
I am French and I was not disappointed by those french dishes that were VERY GOOD!
The Steak Tartare was GREAT as well as the "Crab and avocado Feuillete" which was DELICIOUS !! And the "Confit de Canard"is different from what we can have in France, but it is VERY GOOD!
The desserts were DELICIOUS too! I'd recommend the "mousse au chocolat", "the fruit tart", "the crème brûlée" and the "mille feuilles".
The ambiance was GREAT with Good Traditional French Music!
The employees are SUPER NICE, HELPFUL AND JOYFUL!
I would TOTALLY RECOMMEND this place!

French neighborhood bistro
We were in the area for a concert and decided to dine at ChouChou afterwards. We went on a Sunday evening and the place was very quiet. I imagine that it's much busier earlier in the evening (we got there at 8:30PM and were the last party seated that night). Interesting and eclectic wine list with many by-the-glass choices. The food is very French and reminded me of meals I've had on my visits to Paris and environs.
The service was prompt and personal. The waiter remembered me from a visit many months prior, and recalled my food allergy as well. He took excellent care of me, even removing an item from my plate when he remembered it contained something I cannot eat, and replacing it with an allergy-free item promptly. I'll go back.

Chou Chou for Charm and Romance
This is the 2nd time we have dined at Chou Chou Bistro. Our first experience here was so special we wanted to do it again. And we were so pleased! We requested the more private table by the window which is just perfect for us. Again, the service is so nice, polite, and knowledgeable. The wine list is an adventure all of its own. The steak tartar is such a treat. We both had the salmon this time and loved it. The portion was more than ample and very flavorful! The chef came to our table and made us feel like family.
We don't live in the City, so coming to Chou Chou Bistro is easy and not in the crazy traffic of the more common downtown/tourist zones. Their own small parking lot helps, too. We look forward to our next visit soon!

Top elegant sunset dinning
I went here for the first time and was given a great table perfect for two. Amazing 3 course meal thats up to par with extremely expensive downtown spots. They even sang and gave us a candle for a birthday. The chef even came over to see how we enjoyed our meal. Great all around! Thanks

We had a 9:00 reservation
We had a 9:00 reservation on a weeknight. We were the only people there, but felt welcomed and comfortable and generally enjoyed a delicious, intimate meal with a bottle of wine. I hope more people discover ChouChou as a quiet and comfortable place to relax and unwind after a long day at the office.

Went as a group of four for a catching-up dinner, and we had a delightful meal paired with a stunning bottle of wine. This restaurant is such a gem in its location. Highly recommend it!

I love this kind of French bistro! They had all my favorite classic French fare. The mussels were tender, the sauces delicious and the wine paired perfectly!

Fun Place for any occasion!
I've been here twice now and really love Chou Chou! It's authentic French food and the staff is so sweet and they provide wonderful service. We went here to celebrate our engagement with my fiance's family and they even brought out a heart shaped creme brulee. A very sweet touch to an already amazing meal!

New to Lunch Foodies
Chou Chou Bistro is now open for lunch, I mean literally! It looks like the restaurant has decided to commence in a lunch menu and couple that with their (what it looks to me) successful dinner menu. They have their regular lunch menu items (i.e. burgers, salad, etc.), but they nave a great lunch menu of crepes in variety of fixings. There weren't a whole lot of people around when we went, but I take it that it'll grow once the word gets out about this great bistro in the middle of a great neighborhood in Forest Hill.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had been here on a couple of occasions before and enjoyed the food, service and ambience. We found all were even better this last trip. Admittedly we were a little nervous when at 11:30 we were the only people in the restaurant, but others joined us toward the middle of the meal. With the quality of the food and service, the restaurant should have been full. Amazingly good crepes with inventive fillings. A very attentive garcon and a real feel of Paris. We'll be back.

3rd time we have dined here
3rd time we have dined here in about 3 years and it was good as was before. Menu is classic French Bistro, food is served and plated well and proportions are good for the prices charged. We happened to dine early this time as a wedding reception was going on at a nearby large table. We felt like guests and toasted the couple with the others attending.
I feel the wines are good value here and not overpriced. It is possible to have a good dinner with very suitable wines in the $35-50 range. Another plus is there is usually space in their parking lot which is a big thing in SF!

What a treat
This is a sweet French bistro with an excellent menu, an excellent wine list, attentive service, clearly committed staff, and really good food except for the French fries, which were limp :-(
Crevettes with creamy polenta and haricots verts: mmmmm
Steak with mashed potatoes: mmmmm
Salmon: mmmmm. Epinards: mmmmm
Salade compose, Caesar salad, even chocolate mousse - all lovely, well prepared, delicious.
I love coming here to dinner.

Friendly, knowledgable waiters, good food, the chef came to great our party of 3. The reservation was for 9:30 pm and we stayed long, but didn't feel that the personnel is eager to get us out- exactly opposite, they made sure we have good time. It is pricey, but worth it.

Made for a Wonderful Thanksgiving!
We had a superb prix fixe Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone who works here is incredibly nice and the food is delicious. We had 5 courses. Everything was beautifully presented with the very highest quality food and finest preparation. Portions were enormous and we brought half of the dinner home, making for perfect midnight leftovers. Dinner came to $247 for 3 people with tip. Truly a wonderful "special occasion" meal. Thank you for the OpenTable recommendation and thank you ChouChou!

We hadn't been to Chou Chou
We hadn't been to Chou Chou for a couple of years and were a little worried when we read some recent reviews. Happy to say we had a wonderful dinner. Food and service were just as good as in the past. This place always makes me feel like I'm in Paris.
We were a party of 10 and the menu highlights were, french onion soup, artichoke saute, Duck Wellington and the chocolate pear tarte. My kids loved the hamburgers and frites.
11/28/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food is special
My wife and I love this place. The food is supurb. It has items you do not normally find, and they are all tasty and well-presented. The service is fine also, but they take the european approach (I assume) of not bringing the check until you ask, and it is sometimes hard to catch their eye. Parking is easy. We go every chance we have. It is not cheap, but definately worth it.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
At risk of causing a crowd there, I am recommending Chou Chou very highly. We had high expectations that were well-met. You will love it.
