We enjoyed a quiet, European-like
We enjoyed a quiet, European-like 2 1/2 hour leisurely meal with our Swiss visitor. Reasonably priced and delicious. My only recommendation is that the actual price of the bottled wine is listed on the menu. I assumed that the corking fee mentioned in small print on the menu was for wine brought in from the outside, rather than for their own bottles.

The service was great - apps
The service was great - apps came after our entrees, but the server was very apologetic, the food was well worth the wait and my nightcap was comped for the trouble. I loved my white wine flight, it was the perfect amount for the time we spent here. We had the tapas mushroom soup and the Red Wine Braised Beef Sliders. My husband loved the soup and we fought over the last of the 3 sliders; they were flavorful, tender and the brioche was deliciously buttered and slightly crunchy. Do-over for sure. The accompanied dijon was good, but decidedly unnessecary, the braise on the beef was superb. For dinner, we had the Medallion of Venison - cooked medium - and the Diver Scallops. Home run on both. We will be back when they open up their patio!

Wonderful neighborhood wine bar
I've been to Grand Cru many times; it never disappoints. This was the first time for lunch, a different menu to try. The spicy chickpea and potato cake was delicious, with a balsamic onion marmalade that just melted in your mouth, a hot and spicy green sauce, and seasoned toasted pita as accompaniments. One fellow diner had the grilled reuben sandwich, and the other one of the crepes. No one was disappointed. I had a glass of the house shiraz, which rounded out the flavor experience nicely. I highly recommend Grand Cru for lunch, dinner, or just wine exploration. Their wine flights are invariably interesting and reasonably priced. You get a nice-sized sample glass of each of three wine, and can then purchase a bottle of your favorite.

Every time I've been to Grand Cru it's been a great experience. So many options to enjoy a wide variety of wines, and the food is terrific.

Great place for wine lovers
Small, intimate. Make a reservation for sure! Food and service have always been excellent. We go there often. Pick from the featured wine menu or select a bottle from the retail racks. Food is always first rate with good deserts. Parking can be a chore but there is a nearby underground lot open during evening dining hours (IF you can find the hidden entrance.)

As always, a great location
As always, a great location with wonderful wine and good food. Too loud for conversation the night we went, however.

Great place to have some good
Great place to have some good wine and share some small plates; great HH too. Entrees are solid as well, but always enjoy the cheese, foie gras, and wine. Consistent neighborhood performer.

Good Food and Wine, Obnoxious Noice
If you're looking for a place for a quiet dinner, Grad Cru is not it. It was not just that we were seated near an obnoxiously noisy table; the bare, high ceiling reflects all conversations back to the tables. We couldn't even hear our waitress. Other than that, we enjoyed the food and the concept of buying wine at retail store prices is inviting.

My New Favorite
My new favorite place when in the DC area. Food is excellent and service is great.

Great food and wine!
I brought a group of 11 here to suprise my wife for her birthday. They were incredibly accomadating and provided great service. The ambiance was fantastic for our group: not too quiet, not too loud. Great food, great wine, couldn't have asked for more.

Once again we had a lovely
Once again we had a lovely meal at Grand Cru. It is close to home, cozy and always reliable. The menu always includes interesting and well executed offerings. This time we particularly enjoyed the butterfish. The dessert menu is also pleasing - the pear financier and bread pudding capped off a delicious meal. And of course we love the wine!

Great food and service in
Great food and service in a very cool space. We were there when the weather was nice, so we sat outside in the courtyard. Food was very good, as was the presentation. Will definitely be back.

My guests were one-half hour
My guests were one-half hour late; yet the premium table was saved for us. I sat and waited patiently, while the waitstaff gave me water, offered me wine, etc. I love Grand Cru!

Great for dinner!
Went here for my boyfriend's birthday before heading to a movie across the street in the Ballston Common Mall. We were disappointed that rain kept us from sitting outside, but the overalls experience was wonderful. The food was delicious and there was an extensive wine selection. We would definitely go back.

GREAT FIND - GREAT SERVICE
WOW! What a find - the food and the service were outstanding! Our Server Melvin - was a delight and very educated on wines - he even helped us select some great wines and great prices - even gave us a taste of a few gems while we enjoyed the fabulous food at this gem of a restaurant - don't be driven away by the fact that it is a little challenging to find as it is in the court yard of a ofice/condo complex....

We had a wonderful time on Saturday night. Grand Cru had an extensive wine list, we loved the wine tasting option, and the food was delicious. It was the perfect place for a quiet night where you could enjoy a glass of wine and talk.

GRAND CRU EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS
GRAND CRU EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS FOR AN URBAN OFFICE AREA RESTAURANT ON A SUNDAY EVENING. THE FOOD WELL WELL PREPARED AND SERVICE VERY EFFICIENT. THE NUMEROUS SELECTIONS OF THE HOUSE WINE BY THE GLASS FOR $5 WAS GREAT.
4/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Grand Cru is tucked away in a courtyard, below large office & residential towers, near Ballston. The service is above-average (good). The wines are good to very good. Pricing is Arlington (pricey).
Noise level can be loud if more than half the tables are occupied because it's all tile floors, glass windows and stone walls; no attempt was made by the designer of this place to moderate the very loud level of noise that it gets to inside when even half the tables are occupied.
Has some outdoor seating, and I would opt for that if the weather cooperated.
My second time here; I'd go back.

great food and wine
We loved this restaurant! The food choices were amazing and big enough to share, and the wine flights let us try new wines without committing. It was a great find!

This restaurant is the definition of Neighborhood Gem. Adorable, wonderful service, and great food. I also love the wine flights. It is a great Where are you? To try several types of win.

nice little place in Arlington
My mom and I went to this restaurant while we were staying at an Arlington hotel. It was very close to the hotel, so we were able to walk (which was a selling point to be sure, we were exhausted after sightseeing in DC all day!). We had the charcuterie and cheese plates, which were delicious and a perfect accompaniment to our glass of wine. We also had he crab cakes tapas, which to me was a bit under-seasoned and nothing to write home about. The staff were lovely and the service excellent; we only had one glass of wine, but the bottle selection seemed quite reasonable and the wine flights well-priced from what I could see. Overall, a very pleasant experience!
5/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our group booked because the restaurant was close to the movie we were seeing. It was a great experience from start to finish. Cute hideaway location, 600 bottles of wine store to explore for a reasonably priced bottle at wine store, not restaurant prices. A $5 corkage fee makes it not just fun to peruse the shelves, but worth the time. The food was expertly prepared and the service was timely and expert. We will be back often

A surprise in Ballston
You don't expect to find a restaurant of this caliber tucked away in a quiet little corner of Ballston. Grand Cru is a wine bar that also produces amazing food. As you look at the menu you can't decide what to choose. Everything sounds interesting and when the food arrives you are not disappointed.

Fabulous place to relax and enjoy
Grand Cru sits off the beaten path in a very central location. The food is excellent, the wait staff amazing, the atmosphere - especially when the weather allows for outdoor seating, is exceptional.

Bistro at its Best in Ballston
Grand Cru pairs gastronomic delights well presented with well balanced and affordable wine flights from around the world. Service is outstanding both in the French bistro/wine shop or outside on the patio overlooking a lush park and fountain. This is Ballston at its best, and all very affordable.

The food was great, portions on the small side though. Wish they gave bread at least for free. Im not into wine as much as others, wish they had a regular bar so I could of had a real drink.

Wine bar with great food.
Once you find the place, you won't be disappointed.
Yes, it is tucked away and a little bit hidden with no easy parking access.
But is worth the "trouble".
Great wine selection to choose from and the low corking fee makes it even more attractive.
The food selection is reasonable and extremely good.
And to add to the experience all this comes with a very attentive service and friendly wait stuff.
We will be back ..

It's all about the wine
The wine selection is extraordinary, and the food menu is designed to be paired with the wines. All together Grand Cru offers a delightful experience where everything is designed to enable a celebration of great wines. The flights are a great way to try several different wines at a reasonable price.
6/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
After 3 visits, Grand Cru has been a consistent pleaser. The food is something special. The wait staff is friendly and made great wine. recommendations.

Worth using compass to find it
I stumbled upon this place about a year ago. Finally lunched there with a friend recently. Prices very reasonable, ala carte items or better, the "Executive Lunch" for $12.95 (soup or salad, sandwich or crepe, and small, perfectly sized desert. House wines for $5/glass just right for lunch. Other wine options available. Service was solicitous, not unctious. Reuben sandwich particularly good, as was the seafood crepe (both served with some side salad, so if you do the 3course lunch, get a soup). French Onion soup always available for additional $2 but worth it. Bread not part of the table set-up at lunch, so if you need bread at lunch, you'll pay extra, but really you don't need it. Will definitely return.

Cozy? In Ballston? What fun!
tucked in a courtyard is a small but charming little bistro with great outdoor seating, a wine store, and an eclectic but delicious menu. Who knew? not most people, and i have a feeling those who do would like to keep it a secret.

Great Onion Soup
This was my 2nd visit. 1st visit (lunch) I’d been underwhelmed by my sandwich but wowed by the onion soup. This visit (dinner) onion soup was still outstanding (light on cheese; great depth to broth). Excellent lamb. Very good coffee. Very good mousse and creme brulet. Bread—which must be ordered—is uninteresting. One issue: I ordered “Hawaiian Butterfish.” My 4 requests of the waiter to ask the chef for another name for the fish were ignored. It was only, when leaving, I asked someone directly outside the kitchen to inquire, that I learned, as I suspected, the fish was walu. Walu (or escolar) is a very tasty fish, but a diner should read about risks before eating it. (I’d been careful not to eat much.)

Outdoor Dining and Great Wine
I try to get here at least a few times while the weather is good to enjoy the outdoor dining. The setting makes you feel slightly removed from all the concrete of Ballston with the relaxing fountain and shaded area. The happy hour menu is a fantastic deal which we took advantage of. The house wine is good, and the ceviche tacos and crab cakes were memorable and priced right. I have eaten here before and still remember the wild mushroom orzo (which is still on the menu)...amazing!

Great for wine lovers
Grand Cru has a feel of a real French cafe mixed with a Napa wine tasting experience. The food is excellent and the menu interesting. They took fois gras off the menu, but its probably not for the masses in Arlington. They have interesting wines for their flights. Some are highly rated. They were great about swapping out a wine in the flight when one was pretty bad. This is not a place for kids but makes for a great date night away from the kids.

Love this small, hidden away from the busy Ballston streets, fabulously delicious restaurant. My 6 year old loves the Mac n cheese, her parents enjoy the small plates and al fresca dining with fountain view. The staff are accommodating and the wine options can't be beat.

Great wine selection, food, & serv
Probably the best inexpensive/mod/expensive wine selection in town, where you in essence get your wine at retail price, a stunning saving.
Server was very attentive and knowledgeable about wine and menu.
We had scallops, duck, and pork loin and all were superb.
The noise level is a bit high, so chose your table wisely if conversation is important.

Grand Cru is a Gem
This has become a "regular" restaurant for my husband and me--frequently with our teen children and/or friends. The service is excellent and the food wonderful. Great wine choices too.

Wonderful Wine and Food
The restaurant was not crowded when we arrived and they were very accomodating about letting us select a table. They were gracious about pacing the meal (we were not hurried to order). The servers were very pleasant and not overly-attentive (in a bad way). This is a nice small restaurant with a french vibe.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice place to meet up with friends.
Met up with a friend for drinks (great happy hour) and enjoyed it so much decided to stay for dinner. Excellent food.
If there was one down side, they ran out of Pinot Grigio .
Will return. For sure.

Wine and Dine
Grand Cru provides excellent food and wine in casual atmosphere with tables spread among wine racks and a bar--adding up to a pleasant and relaxing dining experience. Making reservations was easy; the hostess was friendly and helpful ( particularly when I called to ask where to park--the Mall), and the waitress was knowledgeable and forthcoming with suggestions about menu choices (the Mediterranean and Beet Salads were not disappointing) and wine pairings. Note: Parking can be a problem on weekends, so allow time if you have a reservation.

Among the best for food and wine
First time visit for dinner. The food excellent -- outstanding spinach salad, lamb shank, and duck. Also of note -- braised beef sliders -- a smaller plate but if you prefer tapas rather than a large entre go for that plus a salad and maybe soup. Wine was (not surprisingly) excellent; even the house pours are good (and less expensive). Consider one of the wine "flights". The best was the Grand Cru wine flight ($24) -- 3 decent 2.5 oz pours of very high end wines. But even the less expense flights (between $14 and $17) were spot on. Service helpful and non-intrusive. We ate on the early side (645p) and thus could easily converse. But once crowded (by around 745p) the noise level did start to play a role. Even so, high marks.

Always a good experience
The menu isn't huge, but everything on it is good. The bread basket - yum! We ordered a few appetizers and a bottle of wine. Also tried a wine flight, and tried the third glass and really didn't care for it - they offered to exchange it for a different one! Great place in Ballston. When the weather is nice, the outdoor seating is a must!
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great atmosphere and food is terrific. Will definitely go back.

A crush on Grand Cru
My wife and I like Grand Cru in Arlington so much we look for excuses to take friends and relatives there. The menu is brief but its content is terrific. The chef, Trent Conry, is creative and thoughtful and has created wonderful meals for my wife, who has some significant limits on what she can eat. Among the menu winners: Deviled eggs (creamy and piquant too), the Mediterranean Medley salad, mushroomy orzo, and especially the duck, so tender, so wonderfully flavorful. And don't miss the New Mexico brut (yes, New Mexico) at the top of the wine menu. It's pretty much all you could want for a bubbly kick-start to a great meal. Go to Grand Cru any time you have a chance!
