great b-day dinner
we chose to sit outside and although the day was warm, we were really comfortable. had a nice cozy feel and felt like we were on vacation although we live only 15 min. away. server was friendly, efficient, knowledgably, and unpretentious. the food. so great. fabulous execution from cocktail to dessert. I had gnocci that will make it incredibly difficult for any future experiences to live up. portions are on the small side but for the happy in your mouth, you won't be annoyed. a bit expensive for frequent dinners out (for us at least), but we will be making stops in for drinks/apps/desserts:).

A Surprise Anniversary Gift
Although I had shown "Anniversary" in the additional note section of my online OpenTable reservation in the hope of a more private table, our shared dessert at the end of a delicious dinner seemed to take longer than usual. When it did arrive, we found an unexpected delight, when "Happy Anniversary" had been inscribed on the plate, in chocolate sauce, for a private celebration. Suddenly, we realized why Chef Shane had previously delivered the two earlier courses; a rare event, normally, for such a busy, creative, outstanding Co-Owner/Chef.

4 Square of Durham
This is a place that I use as a go to for special occasions, I never worry about my guests enjoying themselves.

Awesome dishes with good service
The food is seasoned very well with creative combinations. The service is very good. The building is very nice. The staff could be a little bit more engaging. Almost all of them seemed stand-offish. At least that's how I felt when I called to reconfirm the reservation and reiterate our special occasion, to how we were greeted when we walked in the door. Not sure what the deal is, but I expected more 'southern charm'.

Truly a surprise
My husband and I won a gift certificate to Four Square and wanted to go for our anniversary. It had e pored as they were closed for holiday but they called us and honored it anyway. We were very pleased; Durham has great food and this is no exception from start to finish. But somewhat more affordable than other spots we frequent and this was a good surprise. Excellent all the way around.

This visit was especially enjoyable. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, service was excellent, and the food was interesting, delicious, and creatively prepared. Prices did seem to have increased over what we have encountered previously, but justified. We'll be going to FourSquare many more times.

In a beautiful, historic house, home to great food and service. Innovative menu, with fresh, locally procured meat and produce. Lives up to its reputation.

First Time Diner
My wife and I dined at 4 Square tonight for the first time. The menu was extremely well suited to the season. The wait service was well done.
They accommodated a request for an all fruit dessert option which was very well done. We had a tasting flight of dessert wines that was excellent and a lot of fun.
All in all a great evening. I would recommend 4 Square for an upscale night out.

Great selection of both appetizers
Great selection of both appetizers and entrees. I recommend the specials, which seem to be the terrific chef's creative ideas for the day. The grouper and grilled prawn entree had an amazing sauce. And I would have had the soup special as well except that they had run out, since we were late arrivals and the last table to order for the evening. it sounded amazing. I still loved my fresh tomato and fried okra salad (more things in that, too).
It is wonderful to dine there because it is easy to have a normal voice conversation. We love the porch, as well.

Quiet dinner ...
...with the team. My colleague from the UK came to our US-based office for a week and we enjoyed a wonderful meal at 4 Square. An amazing array of southern-style cooking w/farm to table emphasis. You will die when you taste the pork pave appetizer. Order two! Highly recommend if you would like to have a relaxed but amazing gourmet feast that shows southern cooking at its best. Great wine/drinks as well including a NC gin that I've never encountered, 'Cardinal' w/lots of juniper!

Wonderful, personalized service! Innovative, tasty food in just the right sized portions! A wonderful experience as always and a great value for the money!

Always a good experience
I've dined here about ten times over the last few years and I've never been disappointed. The food is fresh, well plated, and always well served.

We were visiting from out
We were visiting from out of state for our anniversary. We definitely had a memorable meal and evening. We shared the suckling pig, which had warm hints of ginger in the broth. For our entrees, I had the pork chop draped in red currants with a delightful Asian slaw, and my husband had the venison. Both were artfully prepared and arrived in picture worthy style! The food was 4 diamond quality, and the atmosphere was charming. We usually visit the area a couple times a year and hope to return soon for the lemon curd/blueberry mousse dessert - to die for!

A nice evening out
"Nice" is the operative word. This place isn't trendy. It isn't particularly cutting edge. The setting is quiet, tastefully decorated, and unobtrusive. The food was quite good, the gimlet I ordered not quite so. We had a very pleasant waiter, even though we had to prod for things like "specials" and "no, don't take my plate away quite yet." The place kind of reminded me of a Durham version of Raleigh's Second Empire - an old-style nice restaurant that operates at a slower pace than other high-end Triangle hotspots.

We finally made it
After visiting all of Durham's famous for foodies spots, we finally made it to Four Square after being in the area over five years. More than anything, the outstanding service set this experience apart. From the bartender to wait staff to how our reservation was managed at the door, this team may be Durham's best and certainly some of the more famous names in town could learn from this group. The food was very good too, I'd need to visit again to doubly make sure, but the menu offered a variety of nice choices and everyone in our group walked away with a smile.
The charm of a restaurant in an old home may or may not be for everyone, but on this evening we were glad we finally made it.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We'll definitely be back! Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. I would confidently order anything on the menu. My husbad's pork pave (though neither of us had ever heard of that particular dish/preparation) was flavorful and his venison entree was terrific. My heirloom tomato salad was summer perfection with fried okra croutons and my second was the special of fresh sardines with a spicy chili sauce...mouth-watering. It was our anniversary and we shared both desserts which were presented on chilled plates with "Happy Anniversary" delicately written on the plate rim in chocolate. The wines were thoughtfully chosen and the meal was a complete sussess. I can't wait to dine there again.
Thanks, Four Square!

Fine food in a beautiful setting
Four Square has been serving wonderful food in a splendid Victorian house for 14+ years. The indoor seating has old-world elegance, and the screened porch is a bit less formal. The food is innovative with meat, fish and vegetarian entrees available in the appetizer and main courses. The scallop and octopus entrée was exceptionally well cooked. I would have liked a bit more depth of flavor in the sauces; but, overall; the food was beautifully served, and the bread was divine.
Clearly, there is a reason that Four Square has continued all of these years despite a slightly out-of-the-way location. The food is delicious, and the setting is elegant.

Four Square A Durham Gem
Nothing could be finer than to dine in Carolina at our very own Four Square Restaurant! Chef Shane put together an exquisite, off the menu, beautifully composed, and delicious 4 maybe 5 course meal for my husband and me for a midweek date night. We asked for light but flavorful small portions, and because the menu choices all looked fabulous, the Chef offered to put something together for us. For a truly memorable evening, anytime of the week, Four Square Restaurant is fantastic!

The menu is very creative, and everything we've ever tried here has been absolutely delicious! Service was top-notch. It's a great place to celebrate a special occasion.

Best in the Triangle
I have eaten here several times since moving to the area and have yet to be disappointed. The food is nuanced, fresh and creative; the staff always pleasant and professional. The chef is happy to come out and visit with guests. Our waiter (Tony) on our most recent visit was particularly lovely and accommodating. Can't wait for the next special occassion to go back.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything we tried, from first course/appetizer to desert was absolutely delicious! We sat on the wrap around porch outside and it was wonderful, except for the occasional traffic noise from the road in front of the restaurant. The neighborhood around the restaurant is not as sophisticated as the restaurant itself, but the restaurant is absolutely great.

Great food in a unique setting
We especially enjoyed our dinner in a historic old home in Durham, North Carolina. The food was outstanding and we liked the ambience. The one shortcoming which kept this from being a superb dining experience was the waiter who seemed inexperienced. He had a difficult time remembering the specials and needed to read from his notes.

First Durham Dining Experience
First trip to Durham for college drop off and looked for a nice dining experience for the event. Discovered this neighborhood gem on OpenTable with great reviews. The prior folks were dead on. We had an unusually comfortable August night so had drinks on the porch and ate dinner in the screened in area too enjoying the scallops, tuna and the best dish--perfectly cooked Snapper with a pesto sauce that was perfect. Very reasonable wine list to pair pretty much anything. The service was well-paced and attentive. There were reports about the noise from the road in front, but honestly did not find that bothersome at all. Will definitely return and recommend highly.

Their Customer Service is Awesome!!
I mainly picked this restaurant for our anniversary because other reviewers said that the customer service was great. I was not disappointed. There was a lot of attention to detail.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
My favorite restaurant
Chef Ingram surprizes us time and time again with a new menu that is loaded with new tast sensations. The vegetarian choice is much more than just a collection of sauteed vegetables that most other places serve.
This time we sat out on the screened porch for the first time. Lovely!
If anyone has only time for one dinner out in the Triangle Area - this is the place to go.
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
We went to An with a colleague who was leaving for a new job. We'd never been there previously. The menu looked interesting and we were very pleased with our choices. Presentation unusual and interesting, but not at the expense of the food itself. We were surprised and pleased with various items served at no extra cost between courses. The items were unusual, fueling conversation, and shortening the perceived gaps between courses. Prices were higher than we would pay except for special occasions. However, we still felt we got good value for a lovely evening.

Foursquare never disappoints.
Exceptional food, exceptional service, and a great place to enjoy your dining party. It is really nice to eat great food and be able to carry on a conversation without raising your voice. Foursquare is a great value for a special occasion or if you just want a superior dining experience.

Four Square beyond compare
Enjoyed the evening very much from appetizers to entrees to deserts. Braised leg of lamb and grilled salmon were both amazing as entrees. Diners who have the taste should try the grilled snail panini -- top it all off with a pistachio ice cream and you have a great evening.

Simply the best food you'll find
Foursquare empresses every time. We are always excited to read through the menu, and the decision is never easy. Nearly every item offers excitement and curiosity, as they pair unexpected flavors, and describe each dish only just enough.
Once the food comes, there is always so much more to taste than you anticipated, even from the alluring description.
Every. Bite. Is. Magnificent.
Do not skimp. Order a cocktail, appetizer, entree, and desert. You won't be sorry.

My boyfriend and I went to celebrate our birthdays and we had a great time! Delicious food, truly wonderful mix of flavors in each dish. Our waiter seemed new and the portion sizes are small, which doesn't bother me but it was a point of complaint by my boyfriend. Would definitely recommend it and go back again for a special occasion! Thanks!

Foodie best in a Georgian Home
Chef 's menu is always a winner. Put that in a traditional Four Square Georgian Home setting with wrap around screened in porch seating and you always have a hit. Wonderful place to take out of town guests, meet neighbors or celebrate special occasions.

Great Food, Amazing Experience
Four Square was possibly the best meal me and my wife ever ate! Seth Lange, our waiter, was outstanding and the tasting menu provided to us was out of this world. I couldnt find a flaw in the food or the service. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone!!!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food and great service! The duck confit (special that night) is not to be missed if it is on the menu when you arrive. The duck was cooked perfectly! Nice wine selection.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have been patronising Four Square since its 2nd year of business and have never been disappointed in the service, food/wine knowledge of the staff or the quality and inventiveness of the food.

FOUR SQUARE Restaurant deserves
FOUR SQUARE Restaurant deserves all their wonderful accolades. From the minute one enters this charming old house, warmth along with superior hospitality continues throughout the evening.
The chefs seasonally changing menu delights the palette for sure. The combination of farm to table natural ingredients blended with the chefs creativity makes it difficult to choose appetizers, entrees and desserts. Making a choice is a wonderful problem to have when dining out.
FOUR SQUARE will remain at the top of our list as it has since we moved here four years ago.

The Service Was Excellent. We Never Had To Ask For Anything (Water Or Wine To Be Refilled). The WaiT Staff Was Always In Close Proximity, But Never Annoying. The Food Recommendations Were Excellent.

Always great food and service here, and reasonably priced for all that the experience offers.

Comfortable fine dining
You can't quibble with Four Square's food. I've been 3 times now and never had anything bad. I've bragged enough about it to my wife that she couldn't wait to try it, so I took her for our anniversary. And Four Square did not disappoint.
We had the carpaccio and baby romaine/pear salad openers and we both had the pan seared scallops as an entree. Everything was excellent (as expected), as was Silas' service, and the restaurant's surprising little "treat" for us for our anniversary.
I'd say more, but it would all be just the same sort of glowing praise I've provided so far. So I'll save you the time. Go eat at Four Square -- you'll love it!

Four Square is a lovely old home that now houses a wonderful restaurant. The cuisine is
inventive, the menu offered variety and the ambiance was friendly.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
The service was wonderful and our waiter was very knowledgable about the wine and food. The room we were in upstairs was very cozy and quiet which is refreshing and no one had to shout to be heard. I ordered the salmon which was delicious. My husband had the filet of beef which he thought was a little chewy, but the sauce was very good. All in all, it was a lovely experience and we will return.

Tremendous staff and service. The food seemed a bit high in price for small portion size. The restaurant specializes in fresh, local and hormone free items.

I love this restaurant. The food is clever and and surprisely better than the description. And the service is A1!

My wife and I had a great experience at Four Square. We were seated right away at a great little table. The drinks took a bit longer than expected to arrive but it's barely worth mentioning. We had cauliflower soup and fried green tomatoe for a 1st course and the short ribs and crispy flounder for dinner. Everything was fantastic.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent dining experience
Excellent Tiger Prawns with a leek sauce. Beef short ribs were also excellent--tender and tasty. All were carefully prepared and presented. Service was attentive and not obtrusive. Four Square continues to offer a excellent dining experience and also offers consistent quality from visit to visit. One of our favorite restaurants in the Raleigh-Durham area..

Thanksgiving Last Seating
We almost avoided this restaurant because of the 'not enough choices' and 'exotic food combination' comments. I am very glad we ignored them. It was getting late for Tday reservations and we were traveling through so we placed a reservation. The place is elegant yet comfortable, a smallish but adequate bar to wait for your table. An adequate wine menu and quite a few 'signature' cocktails. Our two starters of oysters and duck terrine were terrific. Main courses were traditional turkey which was okay not great and beef wellington which was very good. Desserts were a hit of chocolate cheesecake and pumpkin panna cotta. Overall a very pleasant surprise.

Better than expected...
We went here for the Thanksgiving diner.
After reading the reviews on Yelp, I was a bit worried. There seemed to be a spate of bad reviews several years ago.
However, I was pleasantly surprised. Everything, including the service, was excellent, quite innovative, and most importantly very flavorful.
I think I'm pretty picky. I'm well traveled, sous vide at home regularly, and roast my own coffee beans. All in all, I thought it was a bargain at $60/person.
