Each dish was perfectly prepared and truly delicious. Be wary of the spicing--- it gets a bit hot, so be sure to speak with your server about your preferences. Service was great and the ambiance lends itself to great conversation with little interruption.

This restaurant is on the site of the former Baluchi's. It's now clean, beautifully
decorated with framed silk textiles and has a magnificent chandelier. We enjoyed excellent, authentic Indian food and our waiter was knowledgeable and personable.

Stellar Indian Cuisine
Stumbled into this spot for a celebratory lunch and was greated by warm and helpful staff. My party elected for the daily hot lunch buffet that was outstanding in quality and amount of choices (meat and veg). Value was spectacular and the buffet items change daily for variety. Will definitely be going back and highly recommend Midtowners to skip any Indian food bar at Whole Foods @ Columbus Circle and try Benares!

Food was delicious, upscale
Food was delicious, upscale Indian with no pretention. Welcoming and cordial staff. We had a nice dinner, beautifully presented, and a complimentary dessert. Great place to go before theatre.

We had a wonderful meal at Benares just before going to the Met. The food was all fresh, delightfully spiced, and made from top quality ingredients. We have eaten in Indian restaurants all over the world, including India, and this is one of the best. We will definitely go back.

Delicious food wrapped in an OK dec
Absolutely delicious, rich, layered flavors and generous portions. This is not your usual greasy Indian! Fresh ingredients. They have done a pretty good job of trying to gussy up what is a pretty awful physical plant--by adding nice furniture, nice upholstery, lighting, and very nice "branding" on menus, cards, etc. The entrance is still a bit odd and the front of the restaurant is not inviting. Never mind all that. Enjoy the delicious flavors of this wonderful food.

Good Food in Easy Atmosphere
Our party of 3 ordered 3 appetizers and 3 entrees.... WAY too much food! Enjoyed tasty Samosas and Bhel Puri which would have been enough. Also ordered Chicken Tikka which was flavorful. The best entree was Malai Kofta which had delicate and complex flavor. We also had Malwani Fish Curry very good and Kohzi Varutha Curry which was average. NO room for desserts. The place was only half full when early (6pm) and we enjoyed friendly and expert service. Would recommend to everyone!!

excellent food and prompt
excellent food and prompt service. Nice Decor. Friendly.
4/19/2013 4:00:00 PM
We started with the Mankyo Tala (Calamari) which was cooked nicely, but a little more chutney would have been appreciated. The Rogan Josh was excellent with lean pieces of lamb and the Chicken Vindaloo had the requisite spiciness. The portions were generous. Service was prompt but not pushy. A very good value for NYC.

Best Indian food, better than the average Indian Restaurants in NYC. Large portion of refined Indian cuisine, great atmosphere and fabulous service, they even offered to keep the "doggie bag" after I returned from the theater.

Benares was recommended by
Benares was recommended by a local when we told her we were looking for Indian food and it did not dissapoint. It is within walking distance to the Theater district and the service was very timely - we had time to enjoy our meal and arrive in time for our show. The food was very authentic and well prepared. The samosas were the best we have ever had. We also thought it was reasonably priced for a NYC restaurant. We can't wait for our next trip back! Thank you.

Benares brings India to NYC!
At Bernares, you will experience what makes Indian food one of the most transcendent of cuisines: spices of curry, ginger and cumin mixed together with coconut creams, mangos, tomatoes and chutneys, served with the most fabulous dishes. We ate the Lamb Chops that were perfectly grilled, the Tawa Scallops and the Goldhar Dhingri (Lobster). They will absolutely transform your senses! Do try their variety of Naan breads with the Cucumber Raita and for dessert: the Gullab Jamun with honey! With the General Manager's standard of excellence on hospitality, you will enjoy a remarkable dining at it's best!

A terrific find 2 blocks from
A terrific find 2 blocks from Carnegie Hall. Specializing in Northern Indian dishes, the portions are more than ample, the plating exotic and the spicing spot on. Try the Aloo Chat app and the tandoor shrimp main and you won't be hungry until breakfast.

Great Indian Lunch Buffett
Food wa excellent at the mid-town location. Great place for quick lunch mid-town though buffet tempting enough to stay a while and have a second plate.

Indian Food near Carnegie Hall
We went to this restaurant after an event at Carnegie Hall. It is a short walk from CH and offers excellent Indian food. We eat Indian quite often and thoroughly enjoyed everything we were served. The service was also wonderful, attentive but not hovering.

Very solid food.
Good food all-around. We especially enjoyed the tandoori salmon appetizer and the crab curry.

Best meal we had in NYC
Wonderful, authentic Indian food, incredibly attentive wait staff, I'm still thinking about the flavours days later.

Relaxing and Delicious!
over all a great place to eat.
Appetizers were not as good as the main course. table next to us said the white lamb was not good. Our choices were very good.
Service was a little slow with only 4 tables occupied.
6/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you want authentic Indian cooking then this is the place. Our first time there and definitely not the last. Our server Edwin was wonderful. Advised us on what to order as per our tastes and everything that he suggested was a hit. Their home style chicken dish is a must. and don't forget to order the rice pudding from the dessert menu. Trust me you will love it.
6/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
the manager (Niting) and his crew picked up the vibe instantly and catered to the crowd in the exact way that could to cater to the group. There were no complaints on the service and the food was very yum!

Not your usual "Curry Hill" place. Close to Carnegie Hall, a little pricier than the run-of-the-mill Indian places. Well worth it. Portions are HUGE, presentation of food lovely (not the usual aluminum dishes, but pretty pottery, nicely garnished). Nice wine/cocktail list too. Chaat appetizer deliciousSamosas gigantic, crispy, tasty. Main dish - lamb,,,,not vindaloo - sorry can't remember, but very nice sauce, huge chunks of very lean lamb. Got the cumin rice which was also lovely. And my favorite, saag paneer, spinach with Indian cheese, Attentive service, water refilled frequently. After dinner my friend and I lingered and the wait staff did not try to rush us out. I would definitely return here.

Fabulous Food and Excellent Service
Another excellent experience at Benares. The service, as always, is attentive and knowledgeable and the food authentic and tasty. We always ask for certain dishes to be served extra spicy and this request is always carried out superbly. We are so pleased to have such a wonderful Indian restaurant in our neighborhood!
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Flavorful and great service!
Surprisingly excellent service, wait staff courteous and informed. Banarsi Kachori appetizer was very good, veggie biryani was very spicy (a bit too spicy but I asked for spicy so probably my fault) but the side of masala sauce was divine. Garlic naan had WAY too much garlic but the regular naan seemed fine. Would definitely go back to try more veggie dishes. Interesting combination of spices/ingredients in entrees (not the same olds you see elsewhere). A bit pricey as rice not included with main dishes and disappointed pappadam was not provided (free). However, would still recommend! 4.5/5

Great and diverse Indian restaurant
Very nice Indian restaurant with extremely diverse menu. Very good food, good service, nice ambience.
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
I went on open table to find a good Indian restaurant that could accommodate 18 people, my family from Vietnam, Canada, New Jersey and New York. The highest rated restaurant was Benares. The food was great with larger portions than I have seen in most North Indian restaurants. ( I'm Indian... I talk from a wealth of experience). The food was also well made, tasty, fresh, and was not too expensive. We had 6 kids in our group, so the price may have decreased bc of the smaller amount of food.
The best part of our experience was the service. The manager and waiters all were working tirelessly to take care of all members ofthe table. everyone loved the food especially the Naan and the chicken briyani

Good Indian restaurant not too far
We had dinner here before seeing a Broadway show. The service was fast and courteous. The food was very fresh, good and bit more spicy than expected, but I liked that!! Although each item on the menu seems reasonably priced, by the time you put together a meal for four people,(rice, bread, vegetables) it turned out to be more expensive than one would expect. All in all, a good dining experience.

Quiet, Inexpensive Indian Dinner
Everything tasted great and it was one of our less expensive NYC because we share appetizer and two main dishes. It was very quiet the night we were there.

We went to Benares prior to going to a Broadway show, and I would highly recommend this restaurant if you like Indian food. We went because we saw it was the #1 rated Indian restaurant and it didn't disappoint; the staff was friendly and attentive, the food was excellent and we were easily finished in time to walk to the show.

Great location - close to theaters
Very convenient to the Theatre district. We were just a few blocks from Book of Mormon and it was a pleasant walk. Food was very good. Flavorful and spicy without being killer hot. Staff was very attentive. It helped that we were they at 5pm when they open for dinner. Woudl absolutely recommend if you like Indian.

I ordered the vegetarian biryani
I ordered the vegetarian biryani and it was sublime. The blend of vegetables was magnificent. The raita was creamy and thick. Absolutely loved it. The naan was piping hot, fresh and wonderful.
The "appetizer" was a complimentary bowl of some sort of small fried rings. They were really unpleasant.
The service was typical for an Indian restaurant- flawless. All of my needs were quickly met without the servers being intrusive or hovering. My water glass was always filled, which I appreciated. My cocktail was very good.
Definitely want to return the next time I'm in NYC.

We visit this restaurant quite regularly and every visit is consistently v.good. The staff are very friendly, efficient and happy to adjust dishes to suit personal taste. The food is wonderful, plentiful and always well presented.

These dishes are delicious and feature spices and flavors not found elsewhere. Hands down best Indian food in NYC.

Awesome Indian food - my favorite
Awesome Indian food - my favorite in the city. But SLOOOOOOOOOW service. It wasn't even busy when I was there - I've been to the restaurant twice in person (they're also my go-to Seamless Indian place) and service was just as slow for an off-hours weekend late lunch as it was for my mid-week dinner. The food is fantastic though. I'll still come to the restaurant, but only when I've got 2 hours to kill.

Robbie the sever was very kind. The owner greeted our table. I highly recommend to diners who want great Indian food.

Great food...great prices!
I discovered this restaurant on Open Table. Went for lunch and was very pleased. Great food and prices. Id recommend it to anyone who wants good Indian food in a relaxed atmosphere.

Follow the reviews
Just as the reviews on "Open Table" stated, this was an excellent choice, very glad we went with Benares. Great selection of meat-free entrees for one in our party.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
superb vegetable dishes
Benares turns out some remarkable vegetable dishes. Excellent variety with agressive spicing. Watch out for the whole spices which show that this kitchen really knows how to do it.

Beautifully Prepared Indian Food
This restaurant is a gem, tucked away off Broadway in the '50s, and easy walk to the theatre. We love the freshly prepared Indian food and the ambiance. The Classic Samosa and Bhel Puri are among the best I've ever tasted. My favorite is Saag Paneer, perfectly prepared! And a plus! We are an omnivore, and a vegan, and because the cooking of Benares is noted for its vegetarian fare, we always find just what we like on the menu -- no fuss about specially prepared dishes.
11/7/2013 4:00:00 PM
Theater District Dining
Though the menu was limited and not nearly as expansive as many other Indian restaurants in which I have dined, the food was very good. They have some unconventional items, like duck, and some interesting fish dishes, but many standard dishes were absent. The naan was perfect, and the two lamb dishes we ordered, lamb vindaloo, and a lamb shank, were excellent. The lamb tasted fresh and wasn't tough, sinewy or gamy.
We reserved seats for after a show, at 10:00, and it clearly was too late. I knew it was their last seating, but expected many patrons to be finishing up from earlier seatings. They gave the appearance of being poised to close, so we were a bit rushed, but it didn't diminish the quality of the food at all.

Best Indian Food and Service in NYC
I have eaten here at least a handful to times and on every occasion I have walked away greatly impressed with the quality of the food. It is fresh, perfectly cooked and tasty. I recently took a work colleague here - he is from India and a cook himself. He commented on how you could distinguish each curry and that you could tell the food was individually prepared to order. The wait staff is high caliber and very professional. Finally, I am vegan and have found Benares to have many options for me. I highly recommend it here.
