A GO TO PLACE
THE VIEW IS SPECIAL. THE SERVICE IS OUTSTANDING, INFORMATIVE ABOUT THE WHOLE MENU, ATTENTIVE TO THE GUESTS NEEDS.

Pricey, but worth it!
I enjoyed this restaurant for the food (yummmm...), the gorgeous view, the outdoor patio fire pits, the easy access to the beach and most of all for the service. They hostess was accommodating and flexible with our group of 8. The servers were fabulous in making our dining experience at La Costanera relaxing & enjoyable. This restaurant sure knows how to treat their patrons. Definitely on my repeat list.

Each course was a surprise
No hamburgers in this place. We really enjoyed savoring the unique flavor of every item. We took our time and kept ordering based on hunger and interest in trying some thing different. Go early, you won't be rushed.

Great Food - Great View
Small plate menu allows you a chance to sample several of the well prepared dishes; Every one of the seven dishes we had were exquisite; The view of the ocean, and beach is unsurpassed; The restaurant has several levels that allows a choice of ambiance; We had very pleasant sangria, but there were also wine and bar options; The decor was modern but simple in silver and white; If you could plan your trip when the sunset was not obscured by cloud, it would complete the spectacular evening;

La Costanera a star location
Our dinner Friday night was perfect. We invited our friends who had never been and we were welcomed to a very nice table. Our friend, who's family is from Peru, chose many of the familiar items off the menu and he was very impressed how much they tasted like what he remembers as a small child. Overall, great food and great ambiance.

The End to a Perfect Day
La Costanera is located right in the middle of the bluff which overlooks Montara State Beach, the patio and fire pits outside provide an excellent atmosphere for kicking back and chatting with friends, there were several well behaved dogs enjoying the festivities as well. Everybody is really laid back and cool... bring a jacket, because the breeze is always present. I made a seven o'clock reservation via Open Table, and requested a table by the window, we arrived a few minutes early, enjoyed a drink at the bar downstairs (definitely try the Pisco Sour, it's an adaptation of a Whiskey Sour, and is delicious!) and our table by the window was ready right on schedule, I had the pork loin, she had the fish, everything was wonderful!
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
I was recommended this place by a friend. The staff was classy and great. The latin (Peruvian) infused appetizers were delicious though tiny. So much so we decided to try a main meal, elected the paella but it lacked flavor... Shoulda known since its more a Spanish dish. Still the appetizers made up the evening with authentic flavor and so did the service. The attire ranges from casual to semi- casual, compatibly priced. I recommend it.
Looking for a little escape, then this is the place-off the beach with fire pits and an after dinner walk and a scenic drive to top it off.. Romance fills the air!!!
We really had a great evening.

10th Anniversary-Superb Experience
Upon reserving through OpenTable I noted in the comment box that this was a special occasion to celebrate our 10th anniversary. The staff at La Costanera greeted us acknowledging our anniversary, and sent over complimentary glasses of champagne. Our waiter (Luigi) took special care and time to fully orient us to the menu and made several excellent recommendations. All the wait staff were timely though we never felt rushed. The food was fantastic, as we tried several small dishes and shared one large dish. Finally, the ambiance could not be better as we were seated at a window close to the ocean with a fantastic view. For all these reasons, I rated our dining experience with five stars for all the categories. Thanks La Costanera (and Luigi)!

Great Peruvian Food with a view
One of the few ocean view restaurants in the Bay area. Great Peruvian food with great service! 2nd time we were there! Had a blast!
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
On a first visit, I couldn't have expected/received a more perfect dining experience from start to finish! We were allowed to choose our table (in a lovely alcove overlooking the outdoor deck/patio), our waiter (Jacques) was extremely helpful/professional, the support staff were efficient and unobtrusive, the ambiance was comfortable, the cocktail/wine lists were inclusive and the food was absolutely fresh and impeccable. We drove down from Rohnert Park, and it's definitely worth the trip--skip the fried seafood at other spots and treat yourself to something very special at LaCostanera.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Incredible food and view. Menu is inventive. Drinks are great. Sit on the deck and enjoy the crashing waves. Service is relaxed. Vegetarian options. This is the Best restaurant on the coast. Tapas and drinks on the deck are a great way to go if you want to save money as this place is pricey. I would highly recommend this place. Weekends you need reservations.

Half Moon Bay Excellent Choice
La Costanera has amazing Peruvian food, great drinks, and an amazing location on an amazing beach close to Half Moon Bay! High recommend, oh yes, great service too! We loved it!
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Even though the weather didn't cooperate for us we had a great evening. Food was really good. Loved the pirates punch! Will definitely return.

La Costanera doesn't disappoint!
Went to La Costanera for the second time with my wife and a friend. Drinks were the opener--love the Pisco Sour! Had some yucca fries and an ahi cebiche for appetizers, followed by lomo saltado (my favorite), squid ink paella and prawn paella. Topped it off with some flan and some tres leches cake. All stomachs were very happy!

As we walked in, a couple
As we walked in, a couple walked out commenting the food was "interesting" in a less than enthusiastic way. Yet, we also overheard them say the food was very good. If ordinary is your favorite, don't bother with La Costanera. If you want fresh, innovative and tasty offerings served by enthusiastic staff, give it a try. The view of the Pacific out the large windows doesn't hurt either. Portions are generous for small plates and the only minus about that is the too soon feeling of fullness when there are more "interesting" things to try. Our one complaint with the energetic and friendly staff was a hesitancy to clear our finished plates. We often had new dishes on the table with empties from the previous courses stacking up.

One year later
Got married here a year ago and at that time the staff was great. Now it was our first anniversary and it was great to return to the same location. The bar staff is still super friendly and easy to talk to, even though they were busy. June was great and so was the watermelon drink *not on the menu* he made us. Food was great as always and our waiter was very nice and patient as we asked about the new items on the menu. We would definitely recommend this place and already have many friends and family who return on a regular basis.

Wonderful overall experience
We had a table next to the window with some amazing views. The staff were prompt but not over attentive. The ceviche sampler was awesome. We ordered a couple of cocktails the mango mojito and the pear martini and they were mixed to perfection. We wanted to try a certain pork dish that they were sadly out of. We substituted it with another pork shoulder but it came out a bit over cooked. The waitress never brought water to the table until more than halfway through the meal when we requested it. A bit surprising was when I ordered coffee and they were out of it completely. Overall a great dining experience with just a couple of hiccups. I would definitely go back for a second round.

Best View and Food outside the City
Food and ambiance made up for the lack of parking (Montara Beach is right there). As always I enjoyed the view and the "lomo Saltado", started with "Tiraditos", malbec was superior.
Overall on of my favorites restaurants.
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
They were out of few dishes due to party that was going on downstairs so I couldn't try what I wanted to, but omg!! Everything here is absolutely great. They knew the noise level would be high that particular night due to a wedding party downstairs, so they even took the time to call ahead to inform me; which I felt was very thoughtful. Noise in this case was wonderful DJ music coming from the wedding reception and my son was dancing to it while eating and enjoying it. service could have been better. Otherwise we enjoyed everything about this place, from food to that wonderful music.
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
great food but wear ear plugs
Terrific food but an extremely noisy restaurant so would not recommend it for a romantic dinner or special occasion. Also, parking lot is quite small and restaurant is large so parking is a major challenge.
9/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent service with outstanding
Excellent service with outstanding views and food.
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food was fantastic. We started with the sampler cebiche, entrees were the halibut and the beef tenderloin, finishing with the lava cake. Our waiter / waitress service was perfect. The sunset was drop dead gorgeous!
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
great view, great food
Love this place. food is wonderful. service is very good.
Love to see the sunset
9/16/2013 5:00:00 PM
more than just a pretty view
Too many "view" restaurants fall down when it comes to food. Especially in the HMB area. La Costanera is an exception. The food is as nice as the view, and the view is pretty good! It's not the most amazing dining experience I've ever had, but it was solid and tasty and I do plan to make a special trip and go back again.
9/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
A new experience
We really enjoyed the food. We tried several small plates and all were delicious. We liked the decor, very pretty. It was great to watch the sunset and the ocean from our table. When the restaurant started to fill up, it became a bit noisy. We are definitely thinking of coming back. Great place for any occasion

Experience on 9/26/13
Great scenic view and ambience
I almost did not go because Open Table only showed one table available at 5:30pm when the majority of the restaurant was empty even at 6:30pm. The service was fair at best. The waiter was not very attentive, knew very little about gluten free requirements, wasn't very interested in offering recommendations. Drinks went empty for quite awhile before he came back to check on us.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was awesome
Group of 6 friends, had a great Peruvian dining experience. Went to the bottom patio for a cocktail (Mojitos and Pisco Sours) and could not stop enjoying the amazing ocean views.... Went upstairs for a front table to enjoy sunset views, mesmerizing, and tried several appetizers and anticuchos (Yucca balls, grilled octopus and Scallops stood out, great flavors from savory sauces, although a touch spicy for some. Gotta try one of the ceviches, of course. Entrees were all tasty, the best was the grilled fish served on top of a seafood stew.... Oh my God, what a symphony of flavors - kept asking for bread to dip on the sauce. Leanne our waitress was phenomenal, attentive, great advice.... and a melting smile. We'll be back!!

I am going to Peru
As a result of the exceptional food at La Costanera, I must plan a trip to Peru if this is any indication of the cuisine. The creamy pumpkin soup with shrimp was sweet and flavorful. We had a Cebiche de Chino that was loaded with chunks of fresh Ahi Tuna. The causa of smoked salmon was spicy and delicious with just the right amount of the rocoto peppers. The Yucca balls were atop a sauce of pureed yellow peppers that was so good we ate all the sauce with a spoon. I don't believe I ever tasted anything so good. Clearly the Michelin star is well deserved. There is also a nice bar area with outdoor fire pits in the lower level. Don't miss the sunset view over the ocean.

Dear Folks Back Home,
this is a lovely place where you can meet the moon, the sunset, the ocean, the fire, the waves and have a relaxing evening. The food is good and the service is exceptionally courteous. Clean, elegant, warm and welcoming place. Seemingly effortless perfection that shows amazing professionalism. We won't be coming back home soon. We like it here, where we can go to la Costanera from time to time. If you come visit, we will take you there too and order catch of the day. Bye for now and tell Annie next door she can swallow her words now when she said we would not like it in California.

Dinner by the ocean
Very welcoming place. Wonderful dodo and service. And the view... Oh the view is incredible. I recommend making reservations for dinner at 7 but arriving 30 min earlier to watch the sunset. I'll definitely go back.
10/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fabulous, as usual
Celebrated my husband's birthday with 6 people...service wonderful, food fabulous! Had three appetizer plates to share- don't miss the shrimp small plate and pork spareribs. Entrees excellent. All sauces original and delicious. The tres leches dessert to die for. They even brought complimentary dessert for my husband's birthday treat. Super time had by all.
10/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food is excellent as is the view of the sunset. Only issue is noise due to the full dining room(great) and high ceilings in a large room.
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Experience was so so so...
Ordered practically the whole menu. Shining star was the ceviches and the the alfajores cookies. Service was fine in the beginning, but felt rushed and forgotten by end of meal. It was busy and server was just trying to keep up. He charged our credit card to another's table's meal...
Noticed the chef just wining and dining with a few people in the middle of the room. Was not on the line or evening checking to see the food before expedited out to guests.
Beef heart was tough and chewy, salads were overdressed and traditional Peruvian dishes were under seasoned (lomo saltado).
10/15/2013 5:00:00 PM
best restaurant I've ever been at
The food here is amazing! The sangria is the best, and the ambiance is the closest thing to perfect. I would recommend this to anyone! Went here with my girlfriend for our anniversary and she was absolutely pleased with everything. Thank you LA Costañera.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
We must have driven by this place a dozen times, wondering how it is. Finally took the plunge driving back from the city. And what a great find it was.
Amazing interior design in an unusual building sets the pace for a fabulous night. The dishes on the menu all sound amazing and we picked a special of the day and a seafood stew recommended by the waiter. Both were outstanding. The service was excellent and we chose a great bottle of wine.
We'll come back any time. Sad to hear the restaurant is not open for lunch. It was dark when we got there, but the view on the ocean seemed to be amazing. At least from what we could tell in the full moon light.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Another perfect dinner
This was my 5th visit to this restaurant in 6 weeks. The setting is gorgeous (right on the beach, with fantastic ocean views when it's not foggy), the food and cocktails are amazing, the service is very good to excellent depending on the server (I've had 4 different servers, and the best one is Yvonne), and the ambience is beautiful. The only downside is that it is quite pricey, even without wine. Well, in my opinion it's worth the price and worth the 40-mile drive (from my place).
10/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wish it was Closer....
La Costanera is a gem! I only wish it was closer to Redwood City. I especially love the fact that the patio is dog friendly. I can't wait to try its sister restaurants in SF. Wait staff was attentive and prompt.
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food is always outstanding
Unfortunately, I took clients to the restaurant for dinner and while the food is as wonderful as it always is, the service left something to be desired.
10/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food, service, atmosphere and a spectacular view. We were there for sunset which is the perfect time
10/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great view. Great service
Great view. Great service from the bartender and waitress. Good food and prices.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
The location of this restaurant is amazing and the view is more amazing. I had requested a window seat and was given it, so dinner was off to a good start. The server was also very attentive and great.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
An absolute gem! A friend of mine visited this restaurant a week before I did and highly receommended it for my birthday. I am so glad I chose this location. The food was amazing, the service was impecable and the location is great. Although we went at night to where we could not see anything outside, I am sure the view is out of this world. We are definitely going back, this time for lunch so that we can experience it all.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Delay In Seating
My out of town guests and I had reservations for 7:00 pm and we were not seated until nearly 7:30 pm. I asked the hostess three times when we would be seated and each time all she would say was, "your table is being set now". Clearly the bus staff needs to be trained how to set a table in a timely manner or the hostess needs to be more honest with their guests. If you overbooked and are running behind just say so. People don't like to be kept waiting, but they like being lied to even less.
Once we got seated things smoothed out. The waiter was cordial, knowledgeable, and friendly. He made some great recommendations and helped us order the correct amount of food. The food was excellent and the portions adequate.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
Peruvian restaurant overlooking the ocean. Started off with a traditional pisco sour cocktail which was recommended by our server. Very flavorful and set the tone for the evening. We selected the ceviche pescado (I've never had ceviche before and was amazed at the flavors), scallops carlitos and crispy quinoa encrusted prawns with Japanese sweet potato puree which was my favorite. And I can't believe I ate this, but we had grilled octopus as well. All of the plates were served with side items that complemented the flavors and textures perfectly. Our meal was topped off with a perfectly baked chocolate lava cake and vanilla bean panna cotta with just the right texture. Great service and amazing food. Will be back for sure.

Amazing dining experience...
Wow, 6th visit was even better than the previous ones.
First visit on a Saturday night (yes, still a 40-mile drive, still well worth it). I don't know what it is about this place, but I'm in love with it; it's my new favorite restaurant in the entire Bay Area. The Pisco Sour is one of the most delicious cocktails anywhere, period. The Cebiche Tasting (Mixto, Pescado, Chino-Peruano), the Anticucho Carne, and the Langostino Crocantes were again amazing. And this time they had some fantastic entree specials; we tried the seafood pasta and the ahi tuna (can't remember the exact names), and they were unbelievable.
And, of course, the service by Yvonne (our favorite server there or anywhere) was again impeccable and warm at the same time.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
An outstanding experience
This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been. Not only the food was delicious, the service was very adequate and the venue is beautiful. I strongly recommend it.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
another fantastic evening
This is my second time eating here and it was just as delicious as the first time. yummy food, great service, great drinks. Brought friends who had never been there before and they are sure to return. They loved everything about it also. I took them downstairs to show them the bar and outside area and we ended up staying longer to listen to the Irish band playing. Perfect evening!
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
First of all, my birthday celebrant sister really surprised from my treat and my family really enjoyed the service from Jonathan and Joann. I guess it was the manager who came to greet us at the time we are waiting for the dessert! I thought that was very classy of him to stop by and say hello.
Overall it was a fantastic and awesome experience for us especially as a first time to dine on this restaurant.
The best Peruvian I ever had!
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
One of the best ever...
This was well worth the short drive from Half Moon Bay. First, the service was fantastic. Alex, our sever, was super on the ball; very friendly, personable and knowledgeable about the menu. He was quick to recommend menu items and could easily answer any questions about preparation. My wife had the halibut special and raved about it from the first bite. The sauce was spicy but not too. I had the lamb shank which was simply one of the best, if not the best lamb shank I've ever had; meat fell of the bone and was just delicious. Alex stopped by to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. He suggest the vanilla bean panna cotta for dessert and it was definitely a nice finish to an excellent meal.
11/22/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great Authentic Peruvian Seafood
A variety of well prepared dishes artfully plated. We prefer a variety of the small plates but the larger entre plates are also good. Authentic Peruvian style sauces and preparation (our daughter lived in Peru and has confirmed the authenticity during visits). For small stuff try the yucca balls(!), "bbq" shrimp, scallops, ... Mixed and Ahi tuna Ceviche is excellent. Service is friendly and proficient. We're locals and it's our top go-to place now. The main dining room is nice but in the summer we like to sit outside by the firepits and watch the sunsets over the ocean with Tapas and wine. Has been consistently good since the opening so a safe bet for taking guests or business associates. Wish they did lunch or Sunday brunch.
