2nd Year Anniversary Dinner
This was actually our second time to Chez TJ - the first time was for our 1st year anniversary and we enjoyed the experience so much we decided to visit for our 2nd year anniversary as well. The chef did not disappoint - we chose the full chef's menu and wine pairings. Each dish was so carefully crafted and unique! The chef even threw in a surprise dish because he found out that we were celebrating with them for a second time. Chez TJ has earned a third anniversary visit :)

Ambiance was disappointing.
Ambiance was disappointing. Out table was in a corner surrounded by heavy traffic. Disappointing to see other tables left open while I was constantly getting bumped by the traffic. For price of the outting, you expect a little more in terms of over all experience.

Exceptional Menu and Dishes
All foodies should eat at Chez TJ. The menu was seasonal and ingredients were excellent. The staff was very well informed of the dishes and the wine pairing was really well done. I had the A5 Wagu as my red meat option, it wasn't exactly to my liking, but the staff noticed I wasn't thrilled and informed the chef. The chef came out to speak with me, and removed it from my bill. It was completely voluntary and unnecessary, but a great gesture to show that the chef cares and wants everything to be perfect. We had a great meal and will be going back to Chez TJ again.

Tasty but Pricey
The food was very good and the service was very cordial. The entire environment is very formal, as to be expected for a fine dining establishment. All of items were very creative and delicious. The portions are on the small side and the price is on the high side, but all of this is expected in this type of restaurant.

The food was great. The pacing
The food was great. The pacing was fine. We had been here many years ago and the service at that time had been iffy. It was great this time. We got the "abbreviated" menu. I'm not sure the full menu ("gastronomique") would have been worth the price, but abbreviated menu definitely was.

Truely made date night special. Our first time at ChezTj and we cant wait to come back
The cucumber/scallops was outstanding. The wife thought they had the best tuna ever. The only thing better than the food had to be the service. Everything was outstanding in every way. My hat is of to TJ. Lol. Thanks the clarkes

We truly enjoyed our experience at Chez TJ. The menu offers a thoughtful combination of local ingredients, French technique, and cutting edge presentation. We dined on the 8 course chef's tasting menu which offered a remarkable variety of flavors, colors, and textures in each course. (Don't deprive yourself of the additional cheese course: It's distinctive and well conceived.)

The restaurant is expensive. The food and service is outstanding.

Romantic anniversary dinner
We've dined at Chez TJ many times over the years, but not since the arrival of the current chef, Jarad Gallagher. We chose Chez TJ for celebrating our wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed.
The cuisine is French with California and Asian influences. It is a fairly light style, which we enjoyed. Every dish was delicious and the portion sizes were perfect. The wine pairings were excellent and the pours were generous; in fact, we were given a second serving of the sparkling wines.
Service was attentive and the pace was just right, except for an awkward pause near the end. We declined the optional cheese course, which must have thrown off the timing, because then we waited 20 minutes for dessert.

Best meal I've had. Also the most expensive meal I've had. We had the 10 course tasting menu $140 per person, $180 per person including tax and tip. Creative and delicious. Pot of earth was my favorite.

Justin the GM and everyone who came to our table was amazing, the food coming out of the kitchen was outstanding and creative, we will be back,
thank you to Chef Jarrad and of course George the owner for making our night so special!!!!

Good food, slow service
Good ambiance, excellent food, slow / expensive service.
Before we had a baby, we didn't mind waiting around and having a leisurely dinner, and maybe Chez TJ is one of the places you shouldn't take a baby. In any case, we needed the staff to expedite our dinner, but it still took three hours before it was finished. By that point, my wife and I were stressed from managing our little one. In addition, they required an 18% gratuity, which I don't think was worth it. Thumbs up for the food; thumbs down for flexibility / service / overcharging.

I'll be back!
Usual excellent and attentive service that I have come to appreciate at this fine restaurant over the years. I love the slower pace that allows you to fully enjoy your meals and company. The courses continue to tantalize and delight me in their creativeness and presentation. I can't recall ever seeing gold flakes on chocolate cake before! And the tempura egg yolk was amazing! A definite must place to dine.

Food is Art
Romantic dinner at Chez TJ became a highlight of my month. With Chef's Tasting as a selection you are always in for a special experience, every moment was made special by the staff. The food was outstanding, tastefully presented and artistically executed. The staff was flawlessly courteous. We had dietary restrictions, All dishes were carefully augmented. Everything was delicious, but by far the best duck I have had. . Lamb was fragrant and cooked to perfection too. Japanese Suzuki Tannen fish course melts on your tongue. Chef plays with taste palet in every dish, adding unexpected but suddle notes to each dish. My only regret us that the menu is seasonal so we may never taste some of these dishes again.

Best Food for Miles Around
The food at Chez TJ is truly stunning. Innovative, exciting, and wonderfully flavored without being too rich. At $140 for the tasting menu, it's very expensive, but actually good value for this level of quality. The matched wines were equally innovative and impressive. The service is very good, and all in all this was a real treat, nothing else in the Peninsular comes close.
On the downside, the property is really not great, and the music brash and intrusive, but don't let that put you off. I also found the matched wine portions a little mean.

Good intro to fine dining
We went here for our anniversary and had the 10 course tasting menu with wine pairings. The presentation and preparation of all the dishes was impeccable, and most of them were very tasty and interesting. A couple were just OK (the fried egg wasn't too interesting and the tuna was soft). I don't think any of the dishes really break new ground, which is why they dropped back down to 1 Michelin star. Service was attentive but not really personal. Decor was almost kitschy.

Wonderful interaction with
Wonderful interaction with the servers and sommelier. Would have loved the chance to talk to the chef for a minute.

had a wonderful experience, food was amazing and it was wonderfully presented.

The best Kobe beef I've ever had...
Omg, the kobe was spectacular! next best was the heirloom tomato salad. Service was impeccable! We've heard mixed reviews but wanted to Try it for ourselves. Boy, are we glad to have tried it! My husband and I are big foodies! The dishes they served were different than we've ever tried. The flavoring and the detail was outstanding. We also had wine pairing with our dishes. The samalea (sp?) was awesome! We saw her more than our waiter. I'm glad we tried this place. $750 total with tip (this was the whole shabang chef's menu) I would definitely recommend. It's a must try. This place is fit for people who aren't scared to try something different (raw fish, raw meat and etc).

Always a great meal
We love ChezTJ's for special occasions and a nice 3-4 hour meal. Just a celebration of food and every new chef (they rotate through chefs every now and then) brings their own special style and tricks. The wine pairings are also a great way to discover new wines and styles.

Chez TJ is a wonderful culinary experience. The food here is delicious, the service is the best in town and the presentation of the food can be considered works of art! Each dish that we received in our 10 course meal was more amazing the last. The flavor profiles were like nothing I have had before and you can taste just how fresh the food was. We had a salad that features a goat cheese and tomato macaroon that was amazing. The duck trio offering three different types of prepared meat was exquisite.
The staff here is very well organized. Each empty plate was quickly picked up and another course was brought out. Our hostess/sommelier gave the perfect wine recommendations for each of our dishes. I would highly recommend to all!

Started off stellar but...
We dined here on Friday. The first two courses were inventive and very promising: a savory panna cotta called "Pot of Earth" and a tempura egg yolk. This was followed by a tasty but nothing-too-special seared tuna and a pretty pedestrian scallop dish. Next was the duck course which was executed perfectly in 3 different incarnations (confit, pate, and breast). The main course was antelope which was fine but nothing too spectacular. The meal was rounded off with assorted palate cleansers and a scrumptious Nutter Butter dessert. If there was more consistency from start to finish, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a go-to special occasion place but, at $140 per person, I was hoping for something that truly knocked my socks off.

great date night out
service was great, wine pairing tremendous, definitely worth it.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Whole new level
An excellent dinner, but not for the faint of wallet. We haven't been their in years and our recollections were fond, but not mind blowing. We both had the full course prix fixe; I had the wine pairings and we shared the wine. It was close to mind blowing; the wine pairings were spot on and excellent. Service was very friendly. If you love very finely crafted taste journeys with each plate, you'll love it. Not weird, but wonderful. We're still talking wistfully about the duck course. I was shocked at the tables around us that didn't know the drill of prix fixe menu dining and wine pairing: sit down, enjoy the food and wine pairings and at the end of the meal open up your wallet.

It's worth it!
The restaurant is in a cute little house near the buzzing Mountain View downtown, super convenient yet feels intimate, great for a romantic dinner for two. The service was impeccable, warm yet non-intrusive. The servers may seem a bit proud but they have a good reason for it: the food is amazing! We had the full tasting menu and every course was marvelous, both the presentation and the taste. Many of the preparations were never seen elsewhere. Prepare for a long meal but it is worth every minute and dime!
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was amazing
I've been here a few times and it's always been great. We got the full chef's tasting menu along with the Kobe beef. Each of the dishes were delicious, imaginative, and beautifully presented. The Kobe beef was unbelievable. The wait staff was really good as well and very attentive. Definitely a place worth trying.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have come to Chez TJ over its several incarnations. The newest chef is really hitting his stride, producing fresh, imaginative, delectable dishes that surprise and delight. The staff is attentive without being intrusive. My birthday guest felt thoroughly celebrated by the evening.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
excellent, but overpriced
Food was excellent, portions (both wine pairing and food) were pretty small.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, service needs work
First, the good: the food at Chez TJ is simply outstanding. The Michelin star is well-deserved. If you're looking for unusual, delicious food and are willing to pay a premium for it, this is the place to go.
Unfortunately, the service leaves a bit to be desired. I'm grading on a bit of a curve here, granted, and basing expectations on that Michelin star. The problem is that service is spotty. Some servers are excellent, some not so much. Suffice it to say that if the French Laundry has flawless service, Chez TJ is at maybe 60%. It's not that it's bad, but the difference is obvious.
Overall, it's an excellent dining experience, and no doubt the best in Mountain View.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Chez TJ is a charming Michelin starred restaurant right in downtown Mountain View. Everything was perfection. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to special needs. Worth every penny.

Good one nearby San Jose
Quite surprised by the tasting menu and you do not need to drive to SF, nice and close!

This restaurant was good.
This restaurant was good. The food was very good. But the pricing made the meal hard to enjoy. The prices are there to see and you are free to walk out if you don't like it. In any case, we will not be back. Very expensive, with many better choices in San Francisco for less money.
Just to be clear - they did not cheat us or scam us in any way - we were charged the agreed amount, just very expensive.

Great for special occasions
My wife and I had the chefs menu with cheese course and Kobe beef ($100 extra).
The wine pairings were great. The beet, duck and oyster/uni courses were our favorites.
The Kobe beef was okay but did not blow me away. Will not repeat that.
We go to chez tj once or twice a year.
We are from Europe and especially like the quiet atmosphere and the pace that is not overly rushed.
Chez tj is comparable to other 1-star french restaurants in Western Europe.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Chef TJ fits the bill if you want a pre-fixe menu. It was our anniversary so we went all in. The food was excellent and beautiful and was accompanied with outstanding wine pairings. My only caution is that 10 courses with wine can be a lot of wine and the bill was not cheap.
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Had an amazing dinner here to celebrate our anniversary. Got the tasting menu with wine pairing. Some of the pairings were a little off, but the food was spectacular. The wine steward actually brought us a different wine for one of the courses since we didn't like all the pairings. A memorable experience!

Fine Dining in Mountain View
A couple blocks away from the bustling shops and restaurants in Downtown Mountain View sits a house (literally) that has been converted to an intimate fine dining restaurant. Chez TJ offers a perfect spot for a romantic date night to celebrate a special occasion or just because you wanted to be pampered after a rough week at work. We tried the abbreviated tasting menu and it was absolutely delicious. Each course was meticulously prepared and had its own unique flavors. I was curious about the antelope entree (a rare find) which came out tender and paired nicely with the Chianti wine suggested in the wine pairing menu. The wonderful added free side to our meal was the foie gras stuff crab apple which was a nice finish to a lovely meal.

For a special occasion
Amazing place to celebrate a romantic occasion. Food and wine selection was superb! We went for a 10 yr anniversary celebration. Basically there are 2 options one full price $140 pp of all plates suggestions and the other that we selected of $85pp with around 5 plates that was perfect all with a specific glass of wine... Again is a great experience and you are threated like a king/queen... But be prepared to spend 300 bucks (but are worthy!)

Fabulous food and ambiance
Food was superb and the service very attentive. We enjoyed the Chef's tasting menu and wine pairing. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and helpful and each wine paired well with the course. The restaurant is a vintage house and each room is wonderfully decorated with 3 or 4 tables, plenty of privacy and ambiance. Overall a wonderful place to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

A great comeback!!
I took the chance on a travelzoo deal since both my husband and I came over 10 years ago (separately) and neither of us found it memorable then. Well, the verdict: we both enjoyed our experience and our meal immensely. We had the full tasting menu and all but 1 thing was fantastic. We did not like was the 1st amuse (the pumpkin patch). It was really earthy and I was very confused by the flavors, but I ate it all, so it must be 1 of those weird "i don't know why but i can't stop eating it" type of things. Everything else was really wonderful, especially the fried egg amuse and the duck. Props to the chef, Micheline star well deserved. We look forward to coming back again soon. Thanks for making our anniversary evening wonderful!

After living in Mountain View for nearly 4 years, we were excited to finally check out Chez TJ. We'd heard that a table by the window was the way to go, and requested one when we made the reservation, but were informed when we arrived that it wasn't available. That was a disappointment, but the whole restaurant is cozy and charming and we had a nice table by the fireplace instead.
We had the abbreviated tasting menu and substituted cheese for dessert. Each course was excellent, as was the accompanying bread. Our servers were friendly and attentive and we had a really nice meal and a fun time. For a pricier, more upscale restaurant, the vibe is still comfortable and welcoming.
10/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
Though a bit quiet for our liking, Chez TJ is a perfect destination fit for foodies. We selected the chef's tasting menu along with the wine parings and the food was outstanding. Perfect amount of food and wine. I recommend Chez TJ!

This was our first dining
This was our first dining experience at Chez TJ to celebrate our anniversary and we certainly enjoyed the experience. The reason I didn't rate this higher in Food and Service was just a few inconsistencies throughout the evening. There was one part of a dish that was overly salty and not edible and the hot tea was lukewarm at best. The responsiveness at times was very slow. The portions were just the right amount for a set menu that we didn't feel overly full and was able to enjoy each course.

Really enjoyed dinner to celebrate
Really enjoyed dinner to celebrate good performance of sales team of five. Outstanding food and service in a relaxed yet elegant ambience. Yum.

Special birthday celebration
We went to celebrate my wife's birthday based on a friends recommendation - it more than lived up to our expectations. An excellent evening, thank you

Reminds you how good food can be
The food is just amazing, make you wonder why we can't have such good food in any restaurant.
Unfortunately it's extremely pricey.

Some incredible food...
A few dishes were the absolute best that I've ever had. The seared yellowtail was like eating a piece of foie gras. Definitely the best piece of Hamachi I've ever tasted. The lamb was also the juiciest, most tender rack of lamb without the usual gamey lamb taste either. All of the breads were tasty, especially their buttery brioche. The macaroon with liver pate was quite interesting, good, but a little too sweet in my opinion. Several of their desserts were exquisite too. The lime sherbet was refreshing, the pistachio ice cream was divine, the chocolate mousse was the best I've come across, and the banana jelly candy had so much banana flavor. Some things were too salty, like the kale chip and their salted Normandy butter.

New chef is outstanding
I haven't been to the restaurant in about two years. It was pretty good then but it really has become a world-class restaurant now.
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
Best food I've had in a while
The chef's were accommodating to cook around our dietary restrictions. The food was delish! The ambiance, awesome!

Food menu explanaiton
The waiter explained the food menu. He spoke too fast to explain the food, so none of us could understand well. We asked him to explain again slowly, and we were fine to understand.

Deserves a 2nd Michelin Star now
I was here a couple of years ago and it was very good. We went as a family of 4 two days ago and it was outstanding. I am not easily pleased when it comes to huat cuisine but this time they hit it out of the ball park. Service was efficient and friendly. Not stuffy. Food to excellent and wine pairing introduced us to some new Loire valley selections that were stunning.
