I love this place! Neighborhood gem, family run, great for romantic spot, or in small groups. Definitely recommend Ruben as a server if you can. Love it :)

Great atmosphere, service
Great atmosphere, service and seafood. What one would expect from SB.

Beautiful restaurant. Lovely
Beautiful restaurant. Lovely food choices. Wait staff was fine. A bit put off that we had used open table to arrange our meal there!

Our second visit to Seagrass.
Our second visit to Seagrass. We go for the seafood although there are other items on the menu that look good as well. The service is very good, without being overattentive. We lingered over our meal and at our table as long as we wanted. And they graciously packed up our dessert selections to take home with us. The surprise was that our bill was less than we expected for such an elegant meal.

Great spot for a nice dinner.
Five of us were dining, four enjoyed 2for1 Aaxxess Cheif Surprise specials, the other ordered off the menu. The staff was very friendly, though weren't totally versed in the menu and didn't know where the wild boar was from. We had both fish and game dishes, nice salads, and delicious deserts. The wine was a little off, not sure if it was just the bottle or what. We'll go back for a special occasion and try to sit outside. Other comparable spots are the Wine Cask, Olio e Lemone, Buschon, Duffeys, etc.

A wonderful evening!
My fiance and I were celebrating a very special evening and our recent experience at Seagrass was outstanding! The service, the food (the taste, temperature, and presentation), etc., were top notch. the only thing that I would say was a negative was the corkage fee of $25. I think that was a little too high. But other than that, our evening was perfect!
4/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
Will try again!
A little disappointed with the temperature of my steak. It was luke warm. They did fix it but in the process over cooked it. I refuse to let them fix me another. I ate the parts that were not over cooked and left the rest. They did comp the meal. The staff were wonderful. They could have used at least one more wait staff. They were to busy.
I will go back again and try something else. Expensive for portions served.

my 1st choice in dining
Came to Santa Barbara for a 3 day weekend. Food was just delicious. Service was perfect. Nice comfortable dining room. When returning to the area, Seagrass will be my 1st choice in dining.

A Santa Barbara Dining Gem
It was hard deciding where to dine in Santa Barbara for my one evening I would be visiting. I chose Seagrass by researching "farm to table" on the internet.
The staff was so attentive, but not annoyingly so. My water glass was always full and my wine was poured for me each time.
My first course was the Mixed Green Salad which I believed to be the best salad I have eaten in any restaurant. The goat cheese added such a richness to it and the citronee dressing was perfect. I chose the steamed muscles for my main course. It had pork belly, sausage and onions with a tomato coconut curry broth. There was a crostini served with it and plenty of crusty bread to sop up every last drop of the broth. It was an outstanding experience.

Great food and ambiance!
Our server let us taste a variety of by-the-glass wines before we bought a bottle. The food was excellent (sea bass).

We were offered the private
We were offered the private dining room on that day as it was available.
The setting was outstanding and the room was ideal for our group.
Food and service was outstanding as always.

Seagrass Restaurant is a must-go
If you desire a relaxed, enjoyable fine dining experience, and you have occasion to be in Santa Barbara, Seagrass Restaurant is the place to go. The food is skillfully prepared and artfully presented, and the staff is actually the best part of the meal.
When you reserve a table at Seagrass, it's yours until you're through with it, and the staff makes sure you know it. The food is top quality and obtained locally, and while the skill level is first rate, the level of pretentiousness is exactly the opposite. The menu choices vary with the seasons, but the service remains top-notch throughout the year.
On your next trip to or through Santa Barbara, reserve a table at Seagrass. You deserve it.

Owner Young, Restaurant timeless...
Rueben Perez may be young to own a restaurant, but he's not letting that get in the way of the ambiance, service and quality of dishes served at his family owned place. His father, Robert, is Chef extraordinaire! My wife and I had the patio to ourselves on a quiet Wednesday evening and Rueben and his server Jennifer waited on us as if we were the only ones in the entire place (which was not the case). We tried the four (4) course Chef's surprise (I, for one, am not particularly fond of surprises) and after the two complimentary amuse bouche, my palette grew immensely. It didn't stop there, Gambas, Crudo Sushi Grade Scallops (best I've ever had), mi-cuit salmon and two more delictable dishes, a cheese plate prior to the dessert..exquisite

One of the best meals I've ever had. What more can I say?
5/13/2013 4:00:00 PM
Seagrass consistently delivers a wonderful dining experience. We've been to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and just a night out. The food has always been interesting and delicious, the servers are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is pleasant.
Look for their 3-course gourmet tasting menu available for more than half off on Groupon.

My favorite restaurant
Santa Barbara has some terrific restaurants, and this is my favorite. The food is interesting, delicious and and the menu changes frequently. The chef cooks melt in your mouth pork belly, will cook your fish just as you like it (I like it undercooked which is hard to get if you're not eating sushi) and everything fish, vegetables, fruit is really fresh.
Wine by the glass has an excellent selection, which also changes.
And most importantly it is a restaurant where you are greeted and treated warmly with excellent food, wine and service. Always a treat to go there.

Always Enjoy Seagrass
The service here is always top notch, and I always have high expectations for the food! I have eaten many exceptional meals here. This visit, my halibut dish was lacking flavor, but others in our party loved their dishes. My dad had the Australian Wagyu Steak Frites, yum! We will be back! We especially love to visit for their special early 3-course tasting menu (before 6pm). Nice romantic setting.

Great for a Special Occassion
We came to Seagrass to kick off a bachelorette party; received exceptional service and the food was spectacular. I originally made reservations for 6:45 and we mistakenly got there at 5:45. The host accommodated us even though it was our error. That was the first sign that this would be a great dining experience.
We went all-out and ordered appetizers, salads, main courses, and almost every dessert on the menu. We brought our own wine ($25 corkage) so can't speak to that. My favorites were the scallops & the lavender panna cotta, but everything was delicious.
The restaurant is perfect for a special occasion, or for foodies, or a romantic night out. It was more than I normally spend at a restaurant, but was so worth it!
5/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
love this place. kind of pricey, but worth it for a special occasion!

Great little restaurant in SB
The chef understands fish at a higher level that most and his preparation of it was sublime. We had dinner there last week and then canceled reservations at another restaurant to come back for a second dinner at Seagrass, it was that good. The black cod and farmed raised king salmon where among the best I have had anywhere.
5/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderfull fresh food
First time using open table, being used to having a live person to confirm my reservation, I was pleasantly surprised that the reservation was made, and everything went smoothly. Will use open table again. The Seagrass is a wonderful restaurant, with very good, friendly service. The tables are set apart enough so you are not disturbed by the adjacent diners. Nice blend of music to enjoy your dinner.
We had the three course dinner, with the wine to compliment the course. Each wine selected was a wonderful compliment to the meal. The entire meal was very good, the wine was good and we had ample time to enjoy each course and each wine. The desert and wine was perfect. would recommend the three course dinner with the wine service.

Dinner with my husband at Seagrass on Tuesday evening was delightful. The chef does a fabulous job of presenting the dishes, and our waiter was superb. I will say that a dish with a listed-on-the-menu ingredient of "forbidden rice" should have more than the teaspoon of rice that was on my plate; similarly, "candied walnuts" in a salad should mean more than one strategically placed walnut half. But the prices were reasonable, so overall we were very satisfied.

Exceptional Dinner Spot
We have never been disappointed with our dining experience here. The service is exceptional, staff are knowledgeable, well-timed and friendly. The wild boar spare ribs appetizer is amazing! Wagyu beef also delicious, as well as the scallops. Mmm and the chef served us a tasty "surprise" dessert. They also have a great wine selection by the glass (they even offer 1/2 glasses!).

If we lived in Santa Barbara,
If we lived in Santa Barbara, we would frqient Seagrass. Had a great restaurant experience. Steak frites was really outstNding. Excellent advice when it came to choosing a wine.
Must say that the exterior doesn't do much to attract the passer-by. Weren't sure where to enter and initial reaction was - this doesn't look very inviting. Glad we ignored that first impression.

Best restaurant in Santa Barbara
After eating at many Santa Barbara restaurants all week, I have to say the 5-course "menu gastronomique" chef's tasting at Seagrass easily surpassed everything else I ate. From the scallop crudo, to the grilled watermelon and mi cuit salmon to the final panna cotta with figs and almond financier with strawberries and roasted rhubarb, everything was simply divine. Service was fantastic too - Stephanie is an excellent waitress, and the owner Chef Robért is clearly so passionate about his work. He definitely doesn't need a pastry chef. I would come back here in a heartbeat. This is one of the best tasting menus I've had in recent memory and Seagrass is easily Michelin star-worthy. Love the romantic and plentiful al fresco seating options too.

Ruben and his staff always do a great job; food is consistently very good and service is great.

Creative and delicious food!
We were thrilled to find SeaGrass through our SB Axxess card. The food is very creative and delicious. The grilled watermelon appetizer looks like seared ahi tuna and tastes like a well seasoned steak, it's very impressive. The black cod melts in your mouth and the duck, while a little salty this night, was perfectly cooked! With a nice wine list and interesting dessert menu, this is a culinary triumph. The atmosphere, despite being at a busy corner in downtown, is very pleasant with white tablecloths, professional staff and an attractive dining room. We enjoyed our late night dinner and will be back!
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We tried the 5-course chef's menu with the wine pairings. The food was extraordinary and the wines were perfect. Our server gave us the delicious details that explained every plate. All took place on the front patio that was buffered from the street by greenery. One of my favorite dining experiences.

As one of the 5 Top Ten favorite
As one of the 5 Top Ten favorite restaurants of Santa Barbara that we visited on this trip, we would rate this as our least favorite.
The food was good, appetizers were terrific, but the entree's were not that spectacular. As the supposed " Favorite sustainable fish restaurant" we were quite unimpressed by the types of fish on the menu and the preparations. My Diver scallops were good by
themselves, but the Forbidden Rice and Bok Choy served with them just were not a hit for me. My husband had the local Halibut and deemed it merely "OK". After a great start with the appetizer's we selected, we were disappointed with how the entree's turned out. Just wasn't a fav for us, but locals seemed to like the place well enough.

Excellent Food at Reasonable Prices
We ordered the Chef's surprise dinner and were very pleased with our choice. I ended up having an appetizer that had watermelon in it that I normally wouldn't have tried. But I am glad it was part of the 3 course dinner because the flavors all resonated with each other and it was delicious. Also, my halibut was excellent and the presentation of all the food was beautiful. My apple crisp a la mode was tasty if a tad traditional. Good wine selection. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable and explained how the chef prepared each of our courses. Seagrass is my favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara because of the unique flavor combinations, beautiful way the food is presented and the fresh local produce and fish and meats used by the chef.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our dinner was wonderful. The chef skillfully melds together disparate elements into a harmonious whole. The Spanish influence is there in the cooking with the skillfully integrated use of peppers. This is one of the best restaurants for foodies in town. The service was impeccable. I would recommend this without reservations to anyone.
7/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
My wife and I created our own "tasting menu": we split 4 starters, and then split an entree. It was all fantastic, especially the Boar Ribs. We will likely be back and do a full chef's tasting menu with paired wines. Highly recommended.
7/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Outstanding in every way
Our second visit to Seagrass had my wife and I comparing it to the best meals we've ever had -- and it's in the top 2 or 3. The wine list, though not gigantic, is excellent and not over priced. The food was artfully plated and luscious. Fresh local halibut and diver scallops were our main courses and they were perfectly cooked. An imaginative appetizer selection will deight anyone. The service was super and not overbearing. The chef came out to deliver dessert and asked for our opinion of the meal. Can't say enough good things about Seagrass. We will definitely return.

Topnotch place for great seafood!
We took a friend from NYC to Seagress this weekend - and you know how picky New Yorkers can be about their food! She loved her mussels, wonderfully-seasoned plump morsels from the sea. And I thought my bronzino special with its crisped and edible skin was the best rendition of that Mediterranean fish the best I've eaten on any coast. My husband's fish dish was more subtly flavored and didn't cry out with the insistence of the other 2 dishes we ordered, but was perfectly cooked.
The waitstaff was professional and very friendly and accommodating. I called this a 'special occasion' restaurant because of the pricing, which hovered in the upper $20's area, except for the mussels, which were $20. Overall, Seagrass is worth the splurge!
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very innovative menu, using fresh ingredients such as grilled watermelon appetizer that was wonderful.
8/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
service AND cuisine!
Seagrass serves truly exceptional cuisine. They use the finest local ingredients and deserve to be proud of their sourcing - we were served the freshest fish we have had in months . The chef's European training shows in the best possible ways - delicious and intriguing preparations that enhance, not fight, with the primary ingredients.
The wait staff was as young and attractive as at other local hot spots, but was very knowledgeable about the cuisine and about the very adventurous wine list. Everything was served and presented with the dignity of a 3 star restaurant without any of the stiffness or pretension.
It should also be noted that the small covered patio is as comfortable and romantic as beautiful inn on the Mediterranean.

Was in town visiting son at college and asked him to pick restaurant. Overall good food, service and ambiance. Not wow'd, but certainly not disappointed. Would eat there again.

This was our first time at
This was our first time at Seagrass which we tried because of its high Zagat score and because, for we Angelenos, at least, it was someplace new. Seagrass did not disappoint. The chef's deconstruction of the classic heirloom tomato and buratta salad was one of the best we've had while there was agreement that the entrees including duck leg confit, black cod over white beans and exquisitely prepared sea scallops were all winners. Desserts also shone, especially the lemon torte for something light.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Have eaten at Seagrass many times. The food and service were excellent. I will definitely be back.
8/31/2013 5:00:00 PM
For my wife's birthday, we chose Seagrass because we have always had good food and great service. This meal was no exception. We chose the four course Chet's surprise and wine pairing. It was phenomenal, a little expensive, but he didn't disappoint. Both of my adult sons want to do this for their birthdays now!
Th food was varied, thing I might not have chosen. The tastes were so remarkable, and then with the wine, it was surprising how each affected the other. Wonderful! Our waitress was very capable and knowledgable and the chef came put to talk to us. It was a home run of an evening. Go for it!

I first stumbled upon Seagrass
I first stumbled upon Seagrass three years ago, on my first trip up to Santa Barbara. I had no idea where the good places to eat were, and after wandering around for about an hour, my companion and I went into Seagrass. I'm so glad we did! Seagrass is our favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara, and perhaps even our favorite restaurant in all of SoCal. The food is impeccably prepared, the flavors are unique and never overdone. The wild boar spare ribs are a must. I love that the restaurant is a family-owned business, and the restaurant has a very intimate character. It's just the right amount of casual and refined. Dinner there is always a special event. The fixed course menus are also a great option if you can't decide on just one option.
9/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
perfect price-quality relation
We've had lovely dinner at family owned Seagrass. Our server was very knowledgeable and well able to accomadate our whole family. The chef created a superb vegetarian meal for our kids as well as a perfectly prepared lamb and seabass fur my wife and myself. Good open wine-list.

Went here on a recommendation
Went here on a recommendation from a local friend. Just a block or two from State St, a bit less busy which I like.
We had reservations and were seated right away. The wine list was solid. We started with the Seagrass bruschetta, yum. The bread was crispy but soft enough to bite. The jumbo sea scallops with black rice were perfectly cooked. Finished with the chocolate mousse.....smooth and creamy. It was a very good experience. I would recommend for a romantic date.

Fit for foodies
This is our third experience at Sea Grass. The food was wonderful...that's why we eat at Sea Grass every time we visit Santa Barbara...

Enjoyed a wonderful early dinner at Seagrass. The service, ambience and food (albeit somewhat small portions) were great.

Excellent food and service. We ordered the 3 course tasting menu paired with wine. The chef's selections were all excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive throughout the meal.

Seagrass is excellent
One of Santa Barbara's best restaurants-food is always excellent and service sensitive to diner's preference. You have to know good food to appreciate what you are getting at Seagrass
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
Intimate and uncrowded
Unlike many smaller restaurants in downtown Santa Barbara, Seagrass is elegant, with an uncrowded intimate atmosphere, the opposite of the typical crowded bistro atmosphere found downtown. Seagrass maintains its intimacy without being stuffy or boring. The menu, while not extensive, is top notch for foodies. A great find for those who prefer intimate upscale dining.
