wonderful ingredients, without overly elaborate presentation. flavors all in harmony. warm and cheerful servers and great vibe in this small neighborhood restaurant. lots of price points for those on a budget. loved the whitefish fritters to start. beet and chopped salads were excellent. terrific veal saltimbocca. apple pie very nice but not as harmonious as other dishes, I found it had too many disparate flavors including otherwise excellent bourbon ice cream. Sunday evenings there is live bluegrass trio, excellent music! Sunday brunch menu noted but not tried yet. there is a backstory to the strange name of this restaurant printed on the menu.

We went on their Thursday night BYOB night which turned out to be an outstanding bargain.
The wait staff was terrific as was the food and general ambience.

What a gem
Wonderful spot. The food was amazing in taste and presentation. So much pride in their product and very welcoming. I can not wait to be back. The staff/service was top notch. Amazing how a first visit makes you feel like you'd had been going there for years.

Truly a neighborhood gem
Got there 2 hour early but they accommodated us at the bar and we were able to eat. Friendly bartender had us taste few drinks we had asked us about and were very attentive while dining. Great ginger carrot soup, baby octopus, even seemingly mundane chop salad was unique in flavor. We found a great place to sit and drink slowly for hours.

There were four of us and
There were four of us and we had a wonderful time. We all had the 3 course prix-fixe dinner. The food was delicious. The variety of flavors were outstanding. I loved the pate compagne and the brandade fritters. The walleye was cooked to perfection. The chocolate souffle was the best I've ever had. . Our waiter was terrific. He advised us and answered all our questions about items on the menu. He was very attentive and helpful. The staff was very accommodating. This is one of the best dining experiences we've had in a long time. We will highly recommend this restaurant to our friends and look forward to returning.

well presented restaurant, warm and welcoming host, our server was outstanding, hospitable. he knew every dish on the menu, how it was prepared, how it tasted,
he did a great job the entire evening, engaging us in conversations and even sold us on returning this sunday for brunch as he could describe the food in such great detail and with such passion!
this place is definatley a neighborhood gem.

Browntrout was amazing!
My wife and I went here for our anniversary, and it was a perfect night. Great local food and drinks. It was comfortable and delicious. Even the coffee was wonderful. I had the walleye in a Boston Clam Chowder sauce that was wonderful. Appetizers were fun and very tasty, fried pork skins and white fish fritters were a nice start. Great local cheeses were a great starter, smoked cheddar from Wisconsin was my favorite. The service was very attentive, fun, and very helpful. We are already planning on returning soon.

We were celebrating our anniversary
We were celebrating our anniversary & chose Browntrout because Chicago Magazine recommended it. It was delightful & we will surely return. Our waitperson was charming and very knowledgeable. I'm thinking going back for 1/2 price wine dinners is our next visit.
5/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
We started off with an order of the morels fried in lard. One of the best things in my entire life. I'm now willing to go to the country to search for them. Or just go back to Browntrout . Delicious meal, perfect, knowledgeable service. Great evening.
5/3/2013 4:00:00 PM
My third time at Browntrout-- all the staff remembered me and said hi :) Food consistently amazing, had the steak this time and it was cooked to perfection. The mac and cheese is incredible and even my friend who 'hates comfort food' loved my dish. We shared the smoked trout appetizer and both of us could have ate that all night long. She had fish with the most incredible lentils. The flavors pop and we both left with a food(ie) glow. So YUM.
Still telling everyone to GO THERE

Serious Food in the Neighborhood
Serious and inventive food at a friendly, casual neighborhood place. They favor local growers and producers. The quality is very high and the taste sublime. Four of us went for the first time. We were extremely pleased with all of the food we had. The menu is small and changes. The signature trout dish was excellent. Our server was knowledgeable, fun and very accommodating.
Highly recommended for foodies.

Great Dining Experience
We were repeat diners at Browntrout and brought some friends there for dinner on Sat. 05/18/13. Dinner was excellent. The mussels appetizer was terrific as usual. Very fresh and hearty portion. The entrees are delicious. The trout is superb. Burger is great. The GM was our server and was friendly, engaging and service was excellent. We ended up closing the restaurant that evening, and never felt rushed. Our friends will definitely be repeat diners as well.

We were celebrating my friend's birthday and found the atmosphere and menu most amazing! We shared several plates and were delighted with each. The staff accommodated our need to be out by a specific time and we were able to enjoy our time together. Everything was perfect!! My fourth time to Brown Trout and I cannot wait to go back!! Don't miss the shrimp cocktail and the risotto.

Unique and Fresh!
My husband and I enjoyed the unique flavors in the dishes at Browntrout. From the rhubarb martini, to the bread service, the fish, the wine, the pasta, vegetables - everything was delicious, flavorful and very, very fresh! Subtle blending of textures and flavors were well executed. Perfect serving sizes didn't overwhelm. The desert was light but flavorful and the coffee didn't disappoint. The ginger beer (non-alcoholic) was a revelation. Comfortable atmosphere and nicely appointed tables. Knowledgable, attentive, and friendly staff. A great balance. We were not disappointed. Final tab was very, very reasonable for the quality and variety of food. We will go back - soon!

Couldn't ask for anything more
Eating at Brown Trout is as close to perfect a dining experience as I can think of. The locally sourced food is tasty and imaginative without being overly 'precious', the service is attentive but not obsequious, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly and congenial - the kind of place where folks from the 'hood would come for a good evening out. We'll definitely be back!
5/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've had the chance to dine at Browntrout twice in the last month. Both times, the service and food were good (table service was a little slow, but we were not in a rush, so that was fine). Rather surprisingly, they only offer two or three fish entrees, but what they do have is very good indeed. The emphasis is on local or Midwest ingredients, even in the drink menu! It is definitely a spot that reflects the neighborhood (there were at least two or three families with children there when we went on a Saturday night), but it was not too loud or rambunctious, and the staff was truly helpful and genuine.

We had a completely delightful Sunday evening at Browntrout. It was our first time there, and service and friendliness greeted us at the door, and set a good tone for the meal. Although we came for the Sunday Chicken special, the fish menu captured us. We loved the mussels starter, trout and walleye entrees were creatively prepared and presented. For special approval, we cite that when friends of ours were seeking a table, when there were none available, our hostess accomodated all of us by letting us share the table
with us at dessert and them at drinks! Worked out well for all.
6/1/2013 4:00:00 PM
Besides the great food and delicious desserts, the service was outstanding. Very people there dining seem very friendly and the staff are fun! We definitely will be back soon. Thank you!

Browntrout overall great experience
First time here, four of us went for someone's birthday. First I love the fact they use all sustainably raised meats and veggies. We started out with the mussel app, pomme frites and a cheese plate. The mussels were PEI and of very good quality. The broth was tasty but thicker than I'm used to and not my favorite ever. Cheese plate had 3 aged cheeses of your choice and tasty breads and sauces. For entrees 3 of us ordered the trout with lentils and grilled asparagus, which was spectacular. My wife ordered the burger which I have to say was the only food item that was sub-par being kind of dry. Our waiter was fantastic, giving my wife a sample of wine, joking with us and at the end of the night giving us a free round of port. Loved it.
6/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Browntrout was a great experience. The servers were welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful. The wine list was great; there's something for any dish. The food was very good. Great place for formal group or intimate dining. I had a wonderful trout and both of my Guests had steak. Ones steak was great and the other was mediocre but this was due to the persons choice though I forget exactly which one it was. Overall I do recommend this place and will be going back again.

Summer Menu is Awesome
As the growing season moves local, the menu items are much more vibrant and lighter.
Still have the old favorites but additions are welcome change to the winter menu.
Great meal, great service ... get a number of smalls to share with your friends.
Stop in for a light lunch or great dinner
6/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
A friend suggested this place. I looked at the menu and was a little uncertain as the items were unusual and it was hard to find a theme. Then I took the plunge and was I rewarded! The food is incredible. Everything we had was extraordinary. From the sous vide soft boiled egg and the oysters (perfect temperature, NO grit and all the liquor to the perfect soft shell crab. I can't wait to return. The service was also exceptional. Everyone covered all tables. Each server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and preparation. Very friendly.
Don't miss Brown Trout.

Friendly and Delicious
Loved this place for brunch. My little guy loved the mac n cheese, and I had a bite or two myself. Ordered the cheese plate to share. The ricotta they make in house was awesome. Egg grinder was also great. They use primarily local foods in their menu, which I really admire. Hope to make it back to try dinner soon.

A lovely evening...
...and a great meal. The food was excellent. I had the warm asparagus salad and the pho bowl and my wife shared the brown trout with her aunt while her uncle had the signature burger. Everyone walked away happy. The service was outstanding, the ambience was wonderful and the outside space was very comfortable even though it was a little tight. Terrific variety for a relatively small menu and all in all a perfectly enjoyable evening. It is truly a neighborhood gem and I highly recommend it.

quiet spot this weekend
We stopped on the July 4th weekend & had a really great meal here, starting with some arancini & a tomato salad which were both really good. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe & served with the right amount of herbs, olive oil & some delicious fried cheese. I had a piece of walleye which was cooked to perfection - moist with a nice crispy skin. My partner had the pho, served with a nice selection of garnishes. This pho was a bit disappointing in that it was mostly broth - very few noodles & the meatballs & sliced meat were more a garnish than a substantial part of the meal. They could have easily been more generous. We finished our meal with strawberry shortbread, with a lime custard, a wonderful summer dessert.

Browntrout is a great neighborhood place with a great concept, great food and great service. We went on a Sunday (1/2 price bottles of wine & fun live music!) it was fairly busy but not packed, out waitress was happy to answer all of our questions about several of the entree's as some had ingredients we'd never had before, while her descriptions were very good the kitchen's execution was even better. Menu changes depending on what's fresh. Go you won't be dissapointed!
7/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
the food was wonderful.
the food was wonderful.
asparagus salad and heirloom tomato salads were amazing.
I had the bucatini with goat shoulder - tasty, but portion was a bit on the small side
friends had the trout and the other walleye - both loved them.
the service was just fine - no complaints. the pace of the meal was good.
décor is rather plain.
looking forward to our next visit!!

Best Kept Secret in Chicago
Brountrout is easily one of the best restaurants in Chicago. I've been there multiple times for brunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. The only thing that surprises me is that it's not always jam packed with diners, because it should be. It doesn't have the location or the scene that appeal to some, but the service and quality & consistency of the food, which should matter more to diners than anything, are better than a vast majority of the restaurants I've been with similar fare. Go there. You'll have a new go to spot that won't break the bank and won't require an advanced reservation.

Great food...great recommendations
Great food...great recommendations by the wait staff who were outstanding. Friends in from Portland loved it. Will definitely be back as we are in the neighborhood!

Very nice near Lincoln Square
A few blocks south of Lincoln square in a storefront, had a great meat and cheese plate to start, then small plates and entrees that were all good. They have a small selection of wines by the glass and more by the bottle. The ones we had were good. The fallen chocolate soufflé was outstanding. A special occasion place for us.

I have been going to Brown Trout for years. Highly recommended. Everyone I bring there loves it.

Celebrating our 8th anniversary here for the 3rd time. Clearly we like it. Great price for the quality of food you get. Never been disappointed.

I loved the choice of fresh, local ingredients and how they were brought together for amazing flavors!

Love this neighborhood gem
Overall, we had a very nice experience. As we were unable to get the time slot we wanted, though, we were confused about why, when the restaurant was not busy at all. My son said his steak was one of the best he'd had. The oysters were fresh and delicious. My salmon was very good, though I was disappointed not to have my usual trout. We were most impressed by our waiter. He was friendly, helpful with wine selection, didn't hover, low key but attentative. We'll be back.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great neighborhood restaurant
I've lived in the neighborhood 2.5 years and finally decided to checkout browntrout. The atmosphere was great and the food was very good. I will be back.

We would go again
We had a lovely dining experience here with a jazz band playing which added to the ambiance. The service was terrific and the food was a bit small in portions but delicious overall. The unique homemade sodas are a nice change and very fresh tasting. We were visiting Chicago when we looked up this restaurant and decided to try it based on the menu. It is north of the city but we would go again if in the area in the future.

Low Key Creative
Browntrout is in a neighborhood I didn't expect to have become so pleasant in the last few years, with many pubs and small restaurants up Lincoln. The restaurant doesn't have a particularly trendy or innovative interior, but the staff is very welcoming and low key. The waitstaff was knowledgeable about wine and food options and didn't rush us. I could have had 3 or 4 of the salad options, they were so interesting. I will return again to sample more items on the menu.

Great Food, No Pretentiousness
The perfect combination of a neighborhood/family feel and top of the line cooking.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Just a note to highlight that despite the fact we were 15 minutes late, that one of our party required immediate attention and that we made multiple off-menu requests we were never made to feel we were being the difficult party that we so obviously were. Thanks very much.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sustainable and delicious
The restaurant is environmentally conscious with an emphasis on local and sustainable food. We had a group of four and everyone was pleased with the dishes. Waiters were friendly and enthusiastic and the restaurant was quite enough to engage in uninterrupted conversation.

Kudos to Chef Sean & Terrific Staff
Farm to Table extraordinaire. The atmosphere is a modern, sleek dining room with all the comforts of home. The scent of smoked wood and the communal table is reminiscent of an "on the farm" dining experience. The food is amazingly comforting yet with an elegant twist. The menu/cocktails change with the seasons, and my Bratwurst Dinner was Octoberfest on a plate! Our cravings for a Fall Meal was scumptiously fulfilled. We began with the mellow smokey flavors of the Mac and Cheese with Bacon (enough for three-four people to share) and completed our dining experience with Rice Pudding/Concord Grapes/Glazed Pecan sauce, and a decedant Fallen Chocolate Souffle surrounded by a candied apple and caramel sauce.Great service/knowledged in winepairing

Great neighborhood restaurant!
Great neighborhood restaurant! The mac and cheese and the walleye were pefect!!
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had a great experience. The food was excelent and unique. Wait staff was very helpful with service and suggestions. The recorded music was a little loud but the Bluegrass band was excellent.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The bluegrass music totally
The bluegrass music totally redeemed the fried chicken that had way too much rosemary in it :)

Always a good bet for dinner
We always enjoy our dinner at Browntrout. Good food, comfortable setting, a good kids menu and attentive service. I recommend for everyone.

Sunday chicken dinner!
This was our first visit to Browntrout, despite living relatively nearby. We had a 5:00 reservation so we could get to a 7:00 concert that night and were seated immediately. Our delightful server told us about the half-price wine offers and the fried chicken special for Sunday nights. It sounded so good that all of us ordered it. Even better, it lived up to the description and was moist, flavorful and delicious. I believe there were some herbs mixed into the beer batter but they were quite subtle and added some good flavor. We also tried a delicious selection of cheeses & the parker house rolls. The latter were the only thing that was a bit disappointing. You get four rolls for $6 but they were just basic dinner rolls. We will be back!
11/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
My husband and I chose Browntrout because of their sustainability philosophy, and the meal was fantastic!! Outstanding! I would highly recommend it to anyone. There were families there, so it is kid friendly. On Sunday nights, a blue grass band plays, and they were really good. I really enjoyed the music. I would go back in a second.

Super Sunday Specials
I had been waiting for a Sunday night when I could take my family to Browntrout for their chicken dinner; it was well worth the wait and we will return. Our meal started with the dollar oysters and kale salad. Two of us had the chicken special which came with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli and one had a mushroom risotto. We added a half off bottle of wine to our meal. Certainly recommend getting a side of the rolls as my son who watches what he eats ate two.
The live bluegrass music is a delightful bonus and keeps the room vibrant.
Where can three people eat an outstanding meal prepared from locally sourced foods accompanied by wine with excellent service and live music for one hundred dollars? At Browntrout.

My husband and I had dinner
My husband and I had dinner at browntrout last Sunday and were very happy with the entire experience. Excellent service, delicious and interesting food, and a chef who obviously takes great pride in his craft.

A new favorite
3 of us made a last minute reservation for Sunday dinner. What a find! Sunday night is fried chicken night, and a half price wine special, featuring a nice range from the full list (which features well chosen wine at every price level), adds tremendous value. We enjoyed the autumn green and wedge salads, crispy walleye, hanger steak and the aforementioned fried chicken and moved on to apple fritters and rice pudding with roasted grapes (both fabulous). Lots of restaurants are touting their local farm sources and seasonal cooking these days, but Browntrout really delivers. Highly, highly recommended.
