Will Return Again
I came back and will go back again. I don't often return to a restaurant but Bibou is different. My first visit was wonderful but there were things on the menu that I wanted to try. My second time I tried a few different dishes and they told me that I should make a reservation to return. It's friendly, and the chef turns out wonderful dishes.

This was my first visit, but it surely won't be my last. The specials for the day were smoked snail ravioli with ramps and fiddle head ferns. The pasta was clearly home made, and everything was melt in your mouth delcious. Then we had the bone marrow special entree, which was outstanding. They mix the marrow with mushrooms, breadcrumbs, and herbs and then bake it back in the bone. It was served with a light green salad and the best fried potatoes I have ever tasted. Then my husband had the Veal sweetbread turrine, and the lamb...ohh man, that lamb was so buttery and delicous. So flavorful! The sweetbread turrine was very good, and the portion was decent. Ended with coffee and chocolate cake and the chef stopped by to say thanks. Amazing!

Foie gras is a must order. I specifically go here for this French specialty. I make the trek in for South jersery for special occasions. I have to come here for authentic french food since most restaurants are french fusion or American french.
The sorbet is a very delicious ending to a perfect meal.

Incredible food, rushed service
My husband and I came here for our anniversary. We chose Sunday for the 4-course for $45 menu. Every bit was amazing. My only issue with the restaurant was that the courses were served immediately after the plates were cleared from the course before. I would have appreciated 5-10 minutes in between to let my stomach digest a bit and to not feel like they were trying to rush through our meal so they could use the table again. Our reservation was at 5:30, and the couple using our table next arrived at about 7:00. An hour and a half for a romantic dinner with wine is not enough.

My ladies birthday dinner!
Overall a wonderful dinner. Expectations going to Bibou are extremely high. That is why I only give 4 stars. The escargot was delightful. Foie gras was out of this world, especially the custard. Bone marrow stuffing was amazing with 2005 Chevrey Chambartin I brought. My only knock would be the entrées. The were very good but not great. The hanger steak with green peppercorn steak was yum and tender but still it's only hanger steak. The Wreckfish with the oat bread had exciting flavors. Little over cooked to my perception. I'm probably wrong. Service loosened up and my French girl really enjoyed herself. Which is what counts. Interesting side note: the table next to us of Ukranians, was openly discussing laundering money. Ha. I will be back.

a little France in south Philly,
a little France in south Philly, it should have extraterritoriality.
Bistrot kind of food at a level that is always better than bistrot and often is at the level of the best restaurants.

One of the best meals I have ever eaten. We will plan a trip to Philadelphia just so we can dine at Bibou again.

What a lovely dining experience.
What a lovely dining experience. Wish I could come back to Philly just to come here.
Chef came out to intoduce himself. Hostess waiters super nice. Wish we would have had time to pick up a bottle of wine or bubbly.

A Wonderful Meal
We have been trying for over a year to get a reservation. It was worth the wait. From the zucchini blossom stuffed with a scallop mousse to the beef marrow stuffing served in a veal bone, it was a festival for the taste buds. We were pleased with everything and we enjoyed talking to the Chef about our experience. We are glad that we were able to make a reservation for our November anniversary. It gives us something to look forward to with anticipation.

Outstanding French cuisine
Wonderful evening at Bibou. I love that the owners greet you personally. The food is authentic French with a nice touch of artistry. Prices are reasonable. Keep in mind it's a BYOB and cash only, but that somehow adds to the charm. There's a parking lot next door, but similar to the restaurant it fills up fast. Some of the dishes trend on the rich side (surprise, surprise), such as the seared foie gras and bone marrow special, but you can go lite with a delectable gazpacho, bouillabaisse, and lemon sorbet for dessert. Leave room for cheese. The owners treat the staff like family.

Such a gem!
Food and service always outstanding. Every time we go, we kick ourselves for not going to Bibou more often. It is just one of those special places where everything comes together. Fantastic food, professional service, warm and lovely atmosphere. Hands down my favorite restaurant in the city.

A little taste of France
My husband and I recently dined at Bibou for a special occasion. Everything was delicious, and very French, right down to the bread and butter. We tried to pick some items that were unique (halibut mousse in a zucchini blossom) or that we wouldn't normally order (escargots) and we weren't disappointed. BYOB makes this fine French dining experience a more reasonble price, which we appreciated. And we really enjoyed talking with Chef Calmels when he made his rounds to each table. I will definitely come back and recommend this restaurant to others.

Perfect Yet Again
Bibou is one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. From their perfectly executed country French fare, to their patiently paced service, a meal here is always a special occasion. Add to that the BYO status of this cozy dining room, and life is good. Bring the best bottles in your collection.

We did the Sunday 4-course prix-fixe, which included a soup, and then a choice in entrees, plats principaux, and desserts. We heard great things about the duo de foie gras as well as escargot, and both exceeded our expectations. Among our party of three, only one of us got the foie gras to share so we could save our stomachs for latter courses. In retrospect, this was a good choice since it was so flavorful and rich. They had pig's foot added onto their menu for the night, and it was amazing and tender with a crispy skin. Scallops were probably the best we've ever had. Desserts weren't nearly as impressive, but they weren't why we came to Bibou. The server was courteous and attentive without being obtrusive. Definitely worth revisiting!

This was our first time at Bibou. With an almost 2 month wait between when we made our reservation and when we dined, our expectations were high. Bibou certainly did not disappoint! The food was superb, the service was excellent. We made our next reservation then and there.

a bit less French, but still fine
Great food with attentive, personal & skilled service. The menu is small but broad, with choice of fish, fowl & meat in appetizer &/or entrée. The tomato salad was simple & beautiful, the green soup (watercress?) was reportedly fabulous, & my cod rillete was both unique & delicious. My wife really enjoyed the risotto special with black truffles shaved over it. Then 3 of the 4 of us had the wahoo, which was also excellent, & my wife loved the mussels. Each couple shared a chocolate mousse, & I left satisfied but not full. With appetizers from $9 to $18 & entrées circling $30, Bibou competes with & holds its own against many fine BYOs. It's now a bit less French & more generic than when it first opened, but it's worth the drive & the price.

Sketchy Neighborhood, No Parking
This restaurant is either in the ghetto, or dangerously close. It took us 45 minutes to find a parking spot. The food is very good, but the experience would be so much better in a better location. We were concerned for our safety, and the safety of our vehicle. It is in a very rough, rundown, low-rent area. Not quite a housing project, but close enough.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
I would still like to see
I would still like to see a change or addition to all courses. We love this place -- the ambience, the service, the quality [particularly for BYO], the acoustics and unpretentiousness -- but we find we have trouble selecting from an odd offering that limits our choices.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best in Philadelphia
The overall dining experience is singular, the service is mature knowledgeable warm and friendly, food prep and presentation best in Philadelphia, seating is a little to tight but you can friendly conversation with nearby dining partners.

Doesn't get better than this
Great food, BYOB, $45 for 4 courses on Sunday, perfect and friendly service. Cannot recommend it more highly. This was one of the best meals I've had in a long time, and certainly the best bargain within 100 miles.

Bibou can't be beat.
How many reviews does it take to confirm that this is one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia. The food is excellent in preparation, presentation, french style and quality. We shared 4 entrees; all were excellent. Appetizers were near perfection. Service was very alert, polite, and although not in tuxedos were perfectly consistent with ambiance. A BYOB and reasonably priced. I've tried numerous times to get a reservation via OpenTable, but always unable between 7 and 9, even months in advance. On chance I tried for a Wed. 8:00 P on the same day and got a reservation, but was certain it was a computer error, or I used the wrong year, or month. It can happen and we enjoyed the surprise as though we'd won a lottery.

Lives up to expectations
I've been trying to get a "reasonable" reservation (something other than 5 or 9:30 and later) for months. I finally snagged one and loved the entire experience. Tiny place (hence the difficulty on reservations). Excellent wait staff. Food was exquisite. Hubby had chilled heirloom tomato soup, sweetbread pate and red drum. All superb. I had chanterelle fricassee which was good. I played it safe with a filet mignon. Excellent. We both ordered desserts that were good but the "complimentary" macaroons and meringue cookies were my favorite. Bread - to die for. Chef came and greeted us warmly for the finishing "outstanding" touch. Next time, bone marrow. It looked fabulous!

Bibou continues to astound
Bibou continues to astound night after night. The food, the service, the charm... Best of luck to Pierre and Charlotte in their new endeavor. Perhaps getting in to the original might be just a bit easier!

This was my second time to Bibou and it was as good as I remembered. My husband and I came for our anniversary. Bibou is the perfect place to celebrate a special event. The service was outstanding and the food excellent. Bibou is better than many of the wonderful French bistros I visited when at Paris in May. The best part is the personal attention the owners have in the place. The owner took the time to answer my email about wine pairings. The chef greeted my husband and I and remembered the email. The place is truly a gem and I can't wait for their second restaurant to open!
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent food and service.
Always a treat to eat at Bibou. Excellent food and service.
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Service was excellent. The restaurant is small and intimate--excellent for couples or a small gathering of good friends. Food was delicious: think French comfort food. And the chef came out and greeted each of his guests--a touch I thought especially thoughtful and nice.

One Night In Philadelphia
We had only one night in Philadelphia and after reading reviews for many restaurants we chose Bibou. It was an excellent choice. Everything was perfect! I highly recommend this excellent restaurant to anyone that truly loves excellent in an intimate setting.

My sister and I are always looking for cozy very Parisian gourmet restaurant. We have now found one. Bibou. We drove 2 hrs. to get there ( we live in Auburn, PA ) and it was well worth it !! Service is excellent and the food is outstanding. and of course, the Chef, he's sweet and tres, tres, charmant !! What a wonderful experience ! and as the Chef said when we said good bye, A BIENTOT.

We went for our wedding anniversary and will return for other special occasions. The food is so beautiful; the service is warm, knowledgeable and thoughtful. I felt as if I'd been in Paris.

Bibou BYOB, the Best of the Best
I took my girlfriend here for her birthday on a Wednesday night and we both LOVED this place. French Chef Pierre Calmels greeted each table and made the whole experience very memorable. A+

Exceptional, exceeded expectations
Absolutely brilliant - food, service, experience. An intimate space with 10 or so tables. Can't wait to return.

We had a superlative meal at Bibou. The room is small, but cozy. Noise level was low to moderate. Everything we ate was perfectly done, perfectly seasoned, perfectly presented. The service was impeccable, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the food. We have just completed a trip across the U.S., spending a total of 18 days in San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia and this was hands down, our best meal and dining experience.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a very small intimate restaurant. Our first time here and if we ever get back to Philadelphia we will go back..Very good food, excellent service and personal attention. I really liked the intimate atmosphere. Be sure and make reservation far in advance.

3rd Time Still a Charm
Each time gets better. This place is a gem with free parking next door. Our favorite restaurant in Philadelphia!
I hope their expansion to Rittenhouse does not affect the 8th St location.

Good food, but the seating...
We really enjoyed our dinner at Bibou, save for one thing: the chairs were not comfortable at all. They're made for skinny diners, and neither I nor my companions really fit that description.
Still, the food was so good that I'd endure the chairs again.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
One must be the best.
We have been to Bibou a number of times and have loved it from the first. The food is at the center of the experience but the friendliness and attentiveness of everyone from the chef to the wait staff adds to the experience. Thanks to all of you.

I love Bibou. I have been there several times now and it is always a new culinary experience. The menu changes with new interesting dishes, the wait staff is awesome and i again left feeling very satisfied. What a gem. Make sure you have a reservation as we saw people politely turned away at the door without them. Easily one of my favorites.
