Still my favorite restaurant
Still my favorite restaurant -- great food, service, and straight-forward no nonsense atmosphere

Jar was recommended by a friend as a place to check out while we were in LA. We enjoyed our food and our server was quite personable. It's not cheap but the food and ambiance are good. It was quite noisy when we arrived but got better as tables started to leave. Surprisingly it cleared out early for a Saturday night but I may be judging it against NY standards.

My new favorite
I'm allergic to gluten and Jar was very friendly to my stomach! The food was amazing and I will not complain about the pricing either because I do think that it was both fair an reasonable. The overall ambience was lovely and we had a wonderful server (Geoffrey), I wish I could eat here for every meal, every day and I also know where I will be eating for my birthday this July. Lastly, the lobster cocktail and signature pot roast... I hope that you decide to put the lobster cocktail on the menu for good and never ever remove the pot roast as well as the crab deviled eggs.
Thank you so much for making it such a wonderful experience and I will definitely be back!
(I brought my friend here for his birthday and he is also in love).

Jar is a fun spot - definitely worth checking out. Great service, food is what you would expect for an upscale steakhouse. And you may even spot a celeb or two
5/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
Excellent STEAK!!! Low Key Ambience
The steak and the service here was excellent. Our waiter was great, I haven't had great customer service like that in a long time. He checked on us, smiled, made good suggestions and was very pleasant. The steak was amazing. the Kansas steak was well worth the $50. No complaints but valet should be free when you're paying that much money for food. Their restaurant needs an ungrade bad. It's just not hip or cool, sort of blah. Other than that I highly recommend this place.
5/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Jeff was an amazing waiter that evening, my date and I loved him to pieces and would love to have him again! The food was to die for as well, best Coq au Vin and pot roast I've had in ages! Cheers!

Really nice dinner. Regarding
Really nice dinner. Regarding my choosing good for service, is NOT a reflection of our server, he was great. But clearly there weren't enough servers on that night, because things did take longer than they should have.
6/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was a great meal 6/9/2013. We ate early. The staff was attentative and helpful. The meal was perfect. The lobster salad had an excellent light dressing not to overpower the tender lobster and crisp french beans. The main course lobster was wonderful in taste. The portions were great. Not too filling but enough to get all the flavors. Great meal. Will go to other lobster Monday..

Everything about our experience
Everything about our experience there was fabulous, except for the dessert, which was a let-down. The peach cobbler was to have been served hot, but it was still cold in the middle, and the streusel-like topping was a dry powder. It was like eating mouthfuls of flour. My pork chop was amazing and my husband's steak was perfect.

Great birthday dinner!
We arrive early, 5:30, and were the only ones there at first. Really nice and attentive waiter.
We had crab deviled eggs and fried clam apps. They were really delicious. For dinner we got rib eye, a filet on the bone special, and their 28 day aged kansas city steak. It's a tossup between the ribeye and filet for which one was best they were both really good. But, the kansas city steak was a bit tough and none of us thought very flavorful.
Sides: french fries, pea shoots and duck fried rice.
All of the sides were delicious. Our only comment on the duck fried rice was while delicious didn't really fit since it was asian flavors.
6/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
I hadn't been to Jar for over 6 years. Not sure why, but the food was still very good. Pot roast tender and tasty as I remembered, and I had the pork chop, which was melt in your mouth juicy. There was a special salad with summer greens, black cherries and blue cheese that was excellent, and the peach crisp is a must.
6/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
An all-around excellent meal.
An all-around excellent meal. The salad was the only "ordinary" thing. The appetizers, mains, and dessert were all great. Good bread is always a plus. Service was very attentive without being pushy.

A place for grown-ups
JAR does everything right. It’s hip, but not a scene. Its service is fast but not rushed. The food - it’s no secret - is superb. For business or pleasure, or both, this is an ideal spot. The neighborhood (off Beverly) is pleasant, valet parking is ready by the front door. The menu is imaginative, creative, and satisfying. Pay attention to the specials.

Waiter wasn't very engaging,
Waiter wasn't very engaging, personable. Wasn't very busy being that it was the day before the 4th of July weekend. He wasn't bad, but just didn't seem to be completely mentally there.
Great food and great seat, but drinks are waaaaaaay overpriced for what they were. Yes, yes, I know it's LA, but that's no excuse.
7/2/2013 4:00:00 PM
What a great place to dine, truly dine. From the front door to the valet bringing you car, every aspect is curated for an elegant dining experience. The lighting sets the mood like no other dining room in the city. I look forward to returning again and again.

Consistently first rate
There's a certain security in knowing that the high culinary standards, the low-key expertise of the staff, and the elegant comfort of JAR have remained consistent for years. This restaurant satisfies every time and it's a pleasure to return. Then there's the butterscotch pudding.
7/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Chic but not a scene
Jar caters to adults and takes its mission seriously. Upscale earthy room, a little dark, but that's OK. Tad pricy but you get what you pay for. Food and service makes Jar a 4 star affair. Good spot for romantic date, biz dinner, or special occasion.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Cool Special Occasion Restaurant
Great food. The service was exceptional. Nice dining room. This is a place you can dress up a little and not stand out. Great for a special occasion. More red meat than you find on a normal LA Menu, but my pot roast was delicious and tender. Well-priced for the portions.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Serve and Food Experience
It was a very good dining experience and the waiter was very engaging. I had the pot roast which was very tender and juicy. We order for our sides the french fries and purple potatoes, both very tasty. For dessert we had the butterscotch pudding and the peach cobbler. I enjoyed the pudding but the peach cobbler, althought the presentation was nice, had to much of the spice clove for my taste. Overall, we had a nice experience and would visit Jar again..

Ate too much!!
My friend and I decided to check out JAR during the DineLA week. Once there, we checked out the DineLA offerings, and felt that the full menu was better and just as cost-friendly. We ended up ordering the Crab Deviled Eggs, Tempura Squash Blossoms, Pot Roast, and Jar Burger. Needless to say, it was alot of food, but was so good that we kept eating though we were bursting at the seams. Everything was pretty much amazing, and I will most likely be returning to Jar in the future to try different items on the menu. Oh yeah, we managed to fit in their amazing Butterscotch & Salted Caramel Pudding for dessert, and it is definitely a MUST for everyone!!
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
I'm all for trying out specials not on the menu. The highest priced steak was $50. The special bone in ribeye was $120. That's fine, but when an item is 240% higher than the highest priced item, it would be nice if the server informed us prior to ordering. I expected maybe $80-90 tops... not $120. It's fine, it was amazing... but that was the only glitch out of an otherwise amazing dinner.
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Very good, not the best.
Overall very good food. The service was slow but courteous. The cocktails were ok, some were flat & not good, but wines were excellent. It was too loud this time for my taste. It made it difficult to hear the waiter & people across the table.
8/9/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Food - Great Evening
We have been to JAR several times and each time it gets better and better. This time there were 4 of us, we ordered 4 dishes and shared them all, several appetizers and desserts. We had never had the Pork Chop and it was AMAZING, the Pot Roast and Scallops were superb also. Don't miss this Top Chef Restaurant, and another Highlight. Suzanne came out and talked to us as we were leaving for the night. Great evening! Thank you

The entire experience was 5 stars
A perfect night a date with my husband. We both enjoyed the entire experience would defiantly go back again.

Culinary, Comfort Food Oasis
A superb meal to linger over always trumps a 5:30 PM drive across the Los Angeles basin and we were certainly not disappointed. The "friends" of Jar were much in evidence at the bar and scattered about and they add a warm and familiar coniviality to the place. The wines by the glass are superb and how often does a chef make a tomato and lobster soup to die for. I could not resist the onion rings and creamed spinach with my pork chop which was extremely flavorful and tender. They work hard bringing farm to table and it shows. My wife's filet was top quality as well. I wish I lived closer as I would not mind at all joining the regulars at this inviting restaurant with cuisine to make LA proud.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellence in Los Angeles
This restaurant is terrific. It has the best steaks I've ever had! The other meats on the menu are also excellent. For veggies there is fish.

This was my second visit to
This was my second visit to Jar and it was as memorable as the first. The food was delicious and impeccably prepared. For the quality, the meal was worth every penny.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good Food but to much noise
I would like to go there often as everything is enjoyable- except as the evening went on the noise level became very bothersome!!

Best Halibut Ever
I hosted a business dinner at Jar this past Monday evening. Three of us had the halibut with a lemon caperberry relish. The dish was magnificent. Our fourth colleague had Jar's Signature Pot Roast which I tasted. Only my Mother's pot roast might top this one. It was perfectly tender. Our waitress (name?) was delightful. All in all, we had great meal and experience. I would highly recommend Jar.
8/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
It was our first time at Jar and it was my birthday. What a fabulous
Dinner we had! The John Dori and the signature pot roast
were so delicious. Champagne and wine, appetizers,
salad... All were so good. To top it off we had the butterscotch
pudding for dessert. I am a butterscotch pudding connoisseur and
make my own homemade. This (hands down) was the best I've ever
had anywhere!! A thousand times better than the one they
serve at Mozza. And theirs is good. We will be back,
and we're not waiting for another birthday. :-)
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of our favorite restaurants in LA. Consistently excellent. Fabulous side dishes. The best chairs in any LA Restaurant! Love the Chicken, the Pork Chop, the Pot Roast, Creamed Corn, fantastic French Fries, be sure to get the Duck Fried Rice.
9/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food and the restaurant is incredible! The service is mediocre. Overall I had a good experience!
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Oldie but Goodie!
We recently returned to JAR after about a 2 year hiatus ... how could we have forgotten it? Not only was the food as good as ever (with some of the same signature dishes -- post roast, tempura onion rings and butterscotch pudding!), but the service -- thanks Nicole -- was divine. We'll definitely be coming back to try other things on the menu.
9/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
It's amazing how consistently
It's amazing how consistently wonderful Jar has been over the years. The kitchen is top-notch, the menu remains fresh and well-executed, and the wine list is expertly curated without imposing any price-gouging. If there is one blight, the hostess could use some additional training.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Pot Roast was excellent,
The Pot Roast was excellent, the best we (3 of us had it)have ever had! Our special of the night Salad was very good! The Butterscotch pudding was delicious. The only thing that was not to par was the wedge salad, the lettuce was not real crisp, it was a bit wilty. The service was very good, and the restaurant was very loud! We had a party of 4 and we were actually shouting to carry a conversation. Overall, I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
There are a lot of old people here, not really for young people i think...
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
I waited all summer for one of Jar's fixed price Lobster Monday's to be gluten free and it finally was. The main dish was terrific, but the appetizer had such hot chili flavor I could not finish it. Imagine leaving large hunks of lobster on your plate!
The waitress kept coming over asking "how are your enjoying your food" , but she did not say anything when I told her I could not eat the appetizer. I guess I could have been more aggressive and requested a different appetizer. The rest of the meal was great.
9/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, average service
Jar justly received the 21st position in Gold's top 100. The food was excellent and the wine-list mark up seemed less than the standard 300%. The service should be better considering the food quality.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved everything we had for dinner. Three of us had the pot roast & one had the salmon. Everything was cooked to perfection. The sides we had were the purple yams, kale, mashed potatoes & onion rings. The bread was nice & crunchy too. It is a bit pricy but we enjoyed every bite. The seats are extremely comfortable which makes for leisurely dining with friends. Also, our waitress gave us excellent service.
10/12/2013 12:00:00 AM
The pot roast and oxtail are not to be missed! Excellent service - thanks for making my brother and sister's birthday celebration tasty!
10/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of our faves
We go to Jar almost every visit to LA as we love the food and specifically the Butterscotch Pudding!
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
When I first heart about Jar
When I first heart about Jar as a re-imagined chophouse, I was skeptical as I try to steer clear of chophouses. But Jar has won me over, and now is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. The service was friendly and the food - especially the sides - which are amazing. The Kombucha squash is a must-have and the oxtail was delicious.

Bring Your Appetite...and Earplugs
From the service to the food, Jar lives up to its reputation for excellence. However, this is not the place to go for a romantic date, or even if you wish to comfortably converse across the table without ending the evening feeling sated, food-wise but hoarse, throat-wise. Quite simply one of the noisiest rooms I've been in for quite a while. But depending on your tolerance for decibels, the food might make it all worthwhile.
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Jar is a place that you can always count on to serve delicious food. It's great for "meat and potatoes" people and for foodies who prefer nouvelle cuisine. From stuffed squash blossoms to impeccably done skirt steak, they always get it right. The services is very good and the room is comfortable if a bit noisy (it's so lively). Definitely worth visiting on a regular basis!

First time visitor after couple
First time visitor after couple of years of passing by and thinking "one day, we'll treat ourselves to an evening inside". It did not disappoint. A table of four included two friends from London who wanted something, they said, that would not have them feeling hungry after dinner.
They ate a lobster salad appetizer followed by the signature pot roast. We did steaks and assorted sides. The service was first-class, managing to combine attentiveness and relaxed with ease. The food was cooked, as requested, and included things being taken off or added to menu items by our picky Brit friends.
We drank champagne and when they ran out of the brand we were drinking, our waiter substituted an alternative without trying to upsell our order.
10/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wine Snob Waitress
When we asked for wine suggestions, the waitress recommended the highest price wines. When we asked to think about our preferences, she took her sweet time to return and take our order. The food was great however.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
best steak in town
the very best in town for quality, service, innovative wine list, noise level and ambience. by far the porterhouse steak is best in town including the famous steak spots like cut and flemings.

Met my wife here for a romantic dinner, we were not disappointed, food and service were great. I really like the clean sophisticated feel of this restaurant.

A wonderful evening
You must try the rack of lamb and the Brussels sprouts. The prices are high, but the food is really good.
