July 4th pre fireworks dinner with friends and family. The restaurant is small. But not the food or service. Our waiter was attentive, even after the restaurant filled up. I ordered the ravioli with a side of lentils. Tasty but too rich. Everyone else at the table enjoyed their choices. Not very many choices for a vegetarian.

Since Fisherman's Wharf was a madhouse for the Fourth of July, we were looking for something close to the Marriot Marquis. Fringale was walkable and French, a good combo for us.
We knew we were in for a good dining experience as locals where walking in, at the small bar area which the manager ran himself.
Besides the standard menu, there was a prix fix menu which you could pick off one of the courses which I did. I had the haricot vert and walnut salad. My husband had the carrot soup, smooth as silk.
The beef entree was tender, the traditional duck confit perfect.
Full bar, good wine list with weekly wines showcased.
Who could go wrong with hot fudge sundae for dessert.

Excellent French Restaurant
The service was attentive and the food was outstanding. I can especially recommend the duck confit and the veal shortribs. The prices are about average for a restaurant of this quality. it's a small restaurant and slightly cramped, but not not disturbingly so.

Friendly and delicious
From the initial greeting as we walked in through salutations on our exit, everyone was extremely kind and welcoming. The server was attentive without coming across as bothersome or aggressive.
Calamari - Cooked and seasoned to perfection
Mussels - Plentiful, though a bit too much vinegar
Chicken/Couscous - As described and cooked just the way I like it
The seating was a bit claustrophobic and the acoustics were a bit echo-ey. I'd suggest to take out a few tables to improve the openness and reduce the noise. Even if this means a price increase, I'd be more likely to come back for special occasions or a romantic night out.

Very pleasant surprise.
Small neighborhood place. Wonderful food pleasantly presented. Tough getting a cab back. Allow some time. Difinitely a keeper.

They had a wonderful Bastille
They had a wonderful Bastille Day menu which showcased their strengths. It was an early reservation so the restaurant was not totally full but even leaving 2 hours later it was still blessedly quiet unlike so many restaurants now which seem to equate ear-aching din with a feeling of conviviality. Well done. Hadn't been back in over 10 years but I am definitely returning and recommending it to others. Great place for adult dining.

Great food & reasonable price
Food was great (somewhat surprised by the large portion for French food) and price is reasonable for the good quality. We ordered a bottle of wine and it was also great for the price we paid. Overall, we had a very nice dining experience.

Hidden Gem in SOMA
I used to live around the corner from Fringale and have been going there for years. The food is always great - the Steak Frites and the Frisee Salad are personal favorites, but most everything I've had there has been very good. The cozy atmosphere is also really nice and I love the fact that you can actually hear each other talk. Definitely a restaurant to keep on your list.

A warm welcome by the owner
A warm welcome by the owner set the stage for a lovely evening in this SOMA bistro. When we return to San Francisco, we'll definitely visit again! Merci beaucoup!

Fantastic food and service
Service was amazing and the food very authentic south-of-france. I highly recommend the calamari "a la plancha", the pastis shrimps and the rack of lamb. Everything was cooked perfectly and the sauces were just out of this world. I highly recommend it if you are a foodie, and love french food!
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best rack of lamb in San Francisco
Fringale is like a bistro in Paris transported to San Francisco. We tried the corn soup and onion tarte for appetizers and both were great. For entrees we tried the steak and the lamb chops and loved them both -- and both were cooked to a perfect medium rare. Great french fries and haricot verts. For dessert, don't miss the almond mousse cake.
7/22/2013 5:00:00 PM
I haven't been to Fringale in years, but will definitely go back soon! The ambiance, service and food were all excellent! And the restaurant was not noisy, we could actually hear hold a conversation!
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
After 20+ years, still one of my favorite restaurants. Every cooked to perfection. The duck breast was superb. Service always friendly and efficient. And prices still reasonable compared to the newbies around town.

Fringale For Any Occasion
We had not been to Fringale for awhile and were so happy to return. The restaurant is charming, the service impeccable, and the food scrumptious. Reservations are always honored punctually and prices are reasonable for the quality of food and service. Fringale is wonderful for a romantic dinner for two or for a special meal and dining experience with any companion. I hope to return soon!
8/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fringale is always an excellent choice for dinner. The staff is helpful and friendly and the food is excellent. Prices are also reasonable. I would recommend Fringale for any occasion.

Always excellent in every way
Great food and service at a true San Francisco gem. We love Fringale more every time we go there.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Restaurant was good, but we were seated 20 mins late and the restaurant got really warm... to the point where you almost had to leave because they couldnt open the windows or the people by the windows would be cold.

Food was delicious! Great
Food was delicious! Great onion tarte appetizer and sauces were delicious!
9/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
still a great option
went there for a quick dinner before the game. food/service/setting very nice. portions are not huge but you won't go away hungry/ tasty/well presented/high quality. creme brulee is the best!
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
A great place for dinner before a SF Giants game.
This time, however, the veal short ribs were way too fatty.
9/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Definitely worth a visit!
Well-prepared food, with special attention paid to flavor combinations. Excellent service.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
There is no better
Fringale, around now for 22 years, is a wonderful place to eat, great food, personal service, and well crafted drinks. For me you can find things that are tough to make at home. I like that. Do yourself a favor, take a friend, spend some time.
9/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Still grand after all these years
Dinner on Sat. evening--full house--prompt and service that says "we are glad you are here". Food always consistent. I had the PEI mussels with frites (an indulgence, yes--but worth it--more than enough for 2). My husband had the duck special and it rivals any Paris bistro. This is not a touristy setting, but we always take the Muni and it works well. Go--you won't be disappointed.
9/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lovely and Charming
We found Fringale to be lovely and charming and the food was quite good. The ambience was wonderful: low music playing in the background yet quiet enough to converse with dinner partners. We would definitely return.
9/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
A bit of Paris on 4th
Always have a wonderful meal at Fringale. The service is wonderful, the food is delicious. Bacon wrapped pork tenderloin for me this time and Rack of lamb for hubby....the port was a bit overcooked for me but I did order it Medium because one never knows what medium might look like. Next time I will ask for it to be a little pinker but that did not discourage the taste buds. It was great. Too much for me to eat so shared a few of the medallions with my husband. Beat salad and butter lettuce salad with great dressings. Can't wait to go back. We have been going there for years and it never gets old!

Great place for a romantic dinner
This restaurant is a great place for a romantic dinner. Great atmosphere, great food, and something that is usually in short supply elsewhere in San Francisco, not too much noise. I have been to several fancy restaurants where the music is so loud that it's impossible to speak. This kind of defeats the purpose of going out and having dinner with someone. Not the case at Fringale though. Just the right amount of background talk and music to give it a nice feeling, but low enough to not require you to shout to be heard.
10/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
The venue is a bit small but
The venue is a bit small but the service was good, the tastes were magnificent, and the price was absolutely reasonable. The ambient music seemed a bit out of place to my wife and I, but it was easy to tune out and talk over. Conversations from the other patrons were not overbearing and no worse than I would have expected.
10/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were a party of 5. The men ordered various duck and steak, which was all felt to be wonderful. I had the veal short ribs that were VERY fatty and what little meat was there was a bit tough. Now, fatty meat being desirable is something of a European concept, so maybe that was their intent, but didn't do it for me. The short ribs at a hotel banquet the next night were better. The other lady had an unremarkable (but nice) salad and delicious onion tart. The desserts were all fabulous. The service was very good, as was the wine and ambiance. So overall, a great experience, except for the disappointing short ribs.

The best duck breast I've
The best duck breast I've ever had... It was a special that evening. The service was wonderful.

our favorite sf bistro. always get wonderful service and great food when we dine here.

Business dinner at Fringale
Pleasant ambience. Attentive service. Well prepared and served fish dishes for two. Moderately size dining area filled by 7:30 pm. Public parking available nearby.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
always a nice lunch
Fringale offers a very nice French lunch at a modreate pace with fresh food and a very friendly staff. The spicy sauted calamri is a favorite. I find this a perfect place for a business lunch.
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Always friendly and delicious
My favorite French restaurant in San Francisco never disappoints. It doesn't really matter what you order, it's always perfectly executed with the perfect amount of "savoir faire." Service is always efficient but unobtrustive, exactly as it should be. A true gem and a bargain, too.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
This restaurant is very cute. The food is fabulous. Had the shrimp appetizer and the sauce it came in was so good we used the breadto eat the rest. Pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon was so tender and just fell apart when you bit into it. Husband had the ribeye that was cooked to perfection. The endive and arugula salad has the best blend of sweet and sour. Will go back soon!

A slice of Paris in SOMA
The classic French food was great. The duck and braised veal short ribs were rich and delicious. The wine list was relatively short, but its selections are elite. Diners can choose from the best French and California wines by the bottle, half bottle or the glass. The full bar is a nice touch as well. I had a martini with a cheese stuffed olive, before moving on to a terrific bottle of Sancerre. The French waiter was very professional. We really enjoyed our visit.

Fringale for family
Lovely earlier Sunday dinner with mom and god-mother - food was great (k dessert was beyond great), service was highly helpful and attentive without being a nuisance, and an overall lovely setting for family catch up session.
Parking was ultra easy directly across the street.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great calamari salad, good martinis, everything specially prepared
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Needs and update
Fringale is one of my old standby restaurants. However, it needs a host and hostess and more friendly waiters. The density of tables is also a problem. Maybe it needs a new location. The food and wine list continues to be its strong points.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fringale is a Favorite
You can't go wrong with Fringale. The food is delicious! If you like some classic French food, then Fringale is terrific. Great salad, wine, duck, fish, and dessert. That warm chocolate cake with ice cream is quite delicious. The duck is a nice portion for dinner. They don't overstuff you here, but they certainly provide nice portions. I was a little disappointed with the onion tart as I expected something like an onion/vegetable "burger", like a crab cake or something along that line. But overall I always enjoy going to Fringale and getting the window seat. It's a very relaxing place and impeccable service. Oh, the French Fries are great, too..
11/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
I had not been to this restuarant for quite awhile. Food and service was wonderful. Our waiter was very cognizant that we had an event at the Yerba Buena Gardens and some time constraints. Tables are a little tight, but overall thoroughly enjoyed this resturant and would go back.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
All the food was good, no bad dishes. The desserts were excellent, best creme brulée in town. Service was great also. A bit expensive, but great for an occasion.
11/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
Love this place!
My husband and I have been coming here for 16 years now. We drive from Pleasanton to eat at Fringale and we absolutely love this restaurant. Food and service are excellent! I highly recommend eating here.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
An intimate and authentic French restaurant. You can actually hear a conversation around the table. The best of traditional French cuisine and California sources. Professional waiters and delicious food. It feels like a neighborhood NYC spot, with an urban atmosphere. Lovely wine selection.

First time here and really
First time here and really loved it! The food was wonderful and we had a terrific server.
My husband and I will return very soon with friends!

What a Lucky Find !
Very happy with our experience there. We were looking for somewhere close to Circ du Solell and found this on Google. Checked out the reviews and the place lived up to them. I would so go back there again, if I have something to do in SOMA. All of the courses were fabulous, the perfect portion size, and the service was spot on. We did not feel rushed through our meal and really appreciated the attentiveness of our server. He was quick toconcur with a wine to go with the rack of lamb, not trying to upsell us.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Another wonderful evening.
This was likely my 20th visit to Fringale, and again, I was impressed. Every course was delicious, and the wine flowed freely. I enjoy the upbeat atmosphere; always welcoming and comfortable. We will make this a habit!
11/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
I've dined at Fringale many times. From when it was the 'it' restaurant with Gerald Hirigoyen was the owner/chef and to it's current owners. Fringale never disappointed. It might not be the flavor of the moment presentation, but it was well-plated and always tasty. The service is always excellent.
Consistency is the hallmark of a well-run restaurant, and Fringale is executing without fail. This particular dinner was for Cassoulet. Amazing comfort food for a chilly, wet SF night. Score on all points. The prix-fixe dinner, the service, the excellent by-the-glass wine pairing. It's like fine-dining on auto-pilot. Order, get served excellent food, linger over coffee and conversation. Pay. Winner.

Consistent high marks for 25+'years
I was part of a large party and often the service is lacking and the food choices more limited. Not so at Fringale.
The service was excellent on friday night and the food delicious as it has been consitently for many years.
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
This place is just terrific. I've been coming here for close to 20 years. It's still just as good as ever. Wait staff is super friendly. Menu is consistent (meaning they've kept my personal favorites forever); food served hot and actually pretty quickly. The wine list is interesting and not too expensive. Many French wines and most everyone is able to accurately equate them with more familiar California varietals. The only down side is that the restaurant is quite small and there are so many tables jammed in there. It's always worth it, though. I recommend and take out-of-town friends to Fringale to all the time.

Never let's me down
I can always count on having a delicious lovely meal at fringale. Escpecially when they have the Brussels sprouts on the menu as a side dish. Yum!
