very good but...
The restaurant is very good. It is small, very quaint and in a good area. The menu was a bit limited, especially for vegetarians and as the restaurant is small and the seating is wood tables and chairs, it is more bistro than restaurant. The area around this is great. So yes, worth a try.

First Time , South End of Boston
My daughter, grandaughter and myself went for the first time prior to going to an afternoon play. We loved it!!! The Vegie burgers were to die for along with the Parmisan Fries with the truffle dipping sauce. The regular hambuger was cooked just as ordered, medium rare. We also had one of their specility drinks which was also very good. Didn't have room for desert, but eveyrthing looked great. I would go back there in a heart beat.

A great spot for weekend brunch!
Great location in the South End! Our out of town guests raved about the experience.
The Eggs Benedict was lovely! It was our first time and we'll definitely be back!

Weekday Dinner gem
Knowing how busy it can get on the weekend, we went on a Tuesday and we were not disappointed. From start to finish, it was a lovely experience. And did I mention quick? The service was superb, he food was delicious, and it was perfect for a quiet conversation. I would go again without hesitation.

Very tasty indeed!
Stopped in for a quick bite before a show. Shared a cucumber-avocado-lime salad with my wife and we both loved it so much that we decided we had to replicate it at home. My salmon main was the moistest tastiest salmon I can remember. My wife's fish and chips were top notch. No time for dessert, had to rush off to the show, but we will be back. Really excellent food, atmosphere, and service.

Much better service this time
My last review included a complaint about the service given by the Maitre D and the how we had to wait a long time to get our table and then rushed out of it in favor of the next guests. I guess my complaints were read and addressed because this time everything was much smoother and more accommodating. Thank you Buttery for paying attention!
Oh, and the food is still great!!! (Although I expected the Salmon and Eggs to be one of those Salmon omelets, while in reality it was eggs and a side of salmon...)

Great Father's Day Find!
What a great find in the South End to celebrate our Pop! We had a wonderful meal from start to finish. We sat upstairs and had a nice table by the window with a very pleasant and knowledgeable server. The meal was fantastic and we will definitely be back, as everything on the menu sounded fantastic!
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
We sat downstairs with only one other table occupied, so it was quiet for us and the food was good.....we enjoyed comfort food meatloaf. I imagine it could get noisy if the room were filled but we visited on a quiet Sunday night. Had a nice walk back to our hotel near the John Hancock building after dinner via Union Park Street....very cute.

Overall I enjoyed the South
Overall I enjoyed the South End Buttery. It did take a while to get seated even though we had reservations and the upstairs, where we waited, did not seem to be air conditioned which, on a hot day, made the wait uncomfortable. The space is a bit cramped, but downstairs was comfortable once we were settled in. The service was very good and the food was excellent! My guest was a vegetarian and there were plenty of choices for her. When we left the hostess got us a cab which arrived quickly. I would definitely go again, but perhaps on a cooler day and I would definitely make reservations - I can't imagine how long I'd wait if I didn't have them.

Fabulous and Reasonable
In a constellation of great, small South End and other Boston neighborhood restaurants offering exquisite menus at corresponding prices, the SE Buttery is notable for its competitive food quality and very reasonable prices. The atmosphere is warm and rustic, rooms small (no music, minimal noise level, ideal for conversation), waitstaff knowledgeable and attentive. There are also some signature comfort foods, creatively reinvented (like the meatloaf) on the menu. We took our grandson and his girlfriend (college students) to dinner there, and all of us loved the meals we chose.

Decor and Food
The decor and ambiance were terrific and the dates for an appetizer were fantastic.

We all LOVED it Mussels, meatloaf and chicken pot pie for the soul!!!!!

Our experience at South End
Our experience at South End Buttery exceeded all expectations. The food, wait service and overall ambiance of the restaurant were spot on! We were a party of 5 and each of us devoured our food -- it was just so delicious and well prepared. As a Brooklyn resident I only wish we had a Buttery to call our own! Highly recommend South End Buttery - it's in a beautiful neighborhood as well.
7/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was a good brunch. We had the Bakery Basket which was fresh and awesome. The portions were plentiful. Their potatoes, although just a side, were delicious. Definitely worth eating here.

Cute little spot
Our server, Ian, was lovely. We had a nice, delicious meal in the quiet and cute basement level. Brick/stone walls with these adorable animal artworks set the tone. The Hibiscus Royale was yummy and light. The Eggs Benedict was savory. I definitely recommend.

South End Buttery
The wait for a table was a bit long, but not too bad. The food was incredible. I had huevos rancheros, and I as well as the rest of my party was satisfied. The service, however, will keep me from ever returning. The waiter was rude, cutting off our questions with curt responses. He told us there were items that we could not order, but when we asked our bus boy, he happily obliged to meet our requests. He ended up being far more helpful than our waiter. I would not return based on the service of our waiter.

Intimate Atmosphere and Affordable
We loved the intimate feel to the restaurant - small touches like pillows on the banquettes and votive candles set into the rustic stone wall made this a relaxing and comfortable experience. Delicious, well-created cocktails (try the Sajerac!) and fresh seafood apps, like the crab cakes garnished with tender dressed arugula and calamari, provided a great start to the meal. The eggplant parm was well portioned, with lots of fresh mozzarella, and the sauce was tomato-y and summer seasoned. The veggie burger was hand created, artfully seasoned and truly delicious. While the menu is not overly expansive, menu choices are thoughtful and well prepared; the prices are truly fair and affordable for the portion and food quality. Will return!!

My husband found this restaurant out on a morning stroll and stopped for coffee. A few days later I mentioned going there for dinner (at the recommendation of a friend). The dinner area downstairs is very unique with its old stone walls. It was beautifully designed and quiet.

South End Staple
We have eaten here many times and have not been disappointed. The fresh fruit salad is truly fresh! The coffee is great!

Small Room with Big Taste
Had Sunday Brunch in downstairs room. Had the French Toast. Buttery, plump and full of sweetness. Friend had an egg dish that she said was perfectly cooked. Atmosphere is cozy hip, and I'm not sure how they accomplish that. A wonderful neighborhood find.

Good food, bad service this time.
Our waitress was either a space cadet or very new to waitressing. The mussels were good and the truffle tries were awesome. The hanger steak was a bit underdone but still delicious and not worth the hassle to make it right given that our service up to that point was very slow. I've been before and had excellent service so I would still recommend the place.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is the perfect place for an early dinner before a show on Tremont Street. It's quiet, so conversation is easy, and the food is consistently good.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Good food at reasonable prices.
Good food at reasonable prices. The table service exceeded the reception service in friendliness and attentiveness.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Four of us went to the South End Buttery after going to a show at the Speakeasy Theater. I made reservations ahead of time. The menu was not expansive, but designed to accommodate a wide range of palettes. We each ordered something different - Meatloaf, Eggplant Parmesan, Hanger Steak, and Orecchiette (savory pasta and veggie dish). The food was served in a timely manner and the dishes were all delicious. The only fault with the evening was a delay in getting the bill, but overall we left very happy with our experience and look forward to our next meal at the Buttery.

AMAZING huevos rancheros!!
AMAZING huevos rancheros!! The brunch drinks and french toast were great. Everyone in my party thought that this was the best brunch they have been to in a long time.

Service was top notch
Meal was good, service was great. Plenty of excellent choices on the menu, hard to go wrong. Our server, Mike, was a great resource for both wine and food. His answer to our questions displayed unusual candor for a server.
Noise was a bit much at times....the regular "buzz" from patrons had normal ebbs and flow, but the music was a tad too much at times for conversation.
The (assuming the ) manger came by for more than cursory chit chat about our experience. Nice to see that's not a lost art.
Would definitely recommend.

A Gem to be Discovered
Tucked into the corner of a South End residential area, this restaurant has an intimate setting--like that of an Italian bucca---very fresh, well prepared food--pleasant, efficient service --overall a very good dining. experience
10/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
The Buttery is more well known for breakfast/lunch but their dinner is not to be missed. Comfort food done very well.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Small menu, with enough choices to satisfy anyone's dietary needs. Close enough to the theatre that you can have a relaxing dinner and get to the theatre on time without being so full that you fall asleep at the show! We came back after the show for dessert!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
My favorite brunch place!
How did I live in Boston for 20+ years and not discover this place sooner? It is an awesome place! The food was fantastic--fresh and delicious. Our server and hostess were friendly and welcoming. It was very busy for Saturday brunch, but luckily the weather was nice outside, so we sat outside while we waited for our table. The atmosphere is casual, but you can definitely bring a date or parents. The food is fantastic! I will definitely be going to the South End Buttery much more often now!
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
I love the Buttery. I go often and always sit at the bar. The bar staff is always wonderful and the food reliably tasty. If I'm in the South End and I can't think of where to go the Buttery is my fail safe.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great food, great service
The veggie burger was the best ever. Cozy place, service was perfect....a really great spot. We will be back!
10/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
Although noisy, the dining space downstairs is mighty warm and comfortable, especially on a dark and dreary weekend. Excellent food for reasonable, standard prices. Excellent wines by the glass. Parking is a challenge, but that goes with the South End territory. An easy, friendly place to return to again and again.

The food was delicious
We were looking for a no-frills meal and we got it. It was delicious, well-prepared and well-presented. The Buttery is easy to find and I can only imagine what a delight the cafe upstairs is (we went straight to the restaurant). The rooms are small and the seating is tight. You may feel a little squeezed. The tables can be wobbly, but the staff is super-friendly and will make you comfortable. I just wish there was a bit more space so I didn't have to slouch over my meal. Otherwise it was very cosy and the food was wonderful.

Dinner with Friends
A couple of friends and I were attending a performance by Urbanity Dance Company and wanted to grab dinner before the show. Someone suggested The Buttery so we made reservations. We were not disappointed! The food was excellent as was the wait staff. They sat us right next to the fireplace and the atmosphere was perfect. We will definitely be coming back.

Quiet and cozy
Had never been here for dinner, though I love the cafe items. Though the food was not fantastic, at least what I tried, the service (Mikey, the bartender/server) was outstanding. I loved him. Drinks were good. The appetizer of bacon-wrapped dates was really good too! All in all, I'll probably be back, at least for apps and drinks. Also, I've heard good things about the brunch on weekends.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
A really good neighborhood dinning
Buttery is a very good place to dine and the food is always tasty and well presented. The menu changes seasonally and its always a good selection and very goodflavors. We go often and really like the back bar area for nice views of the Union Park Street and people walking by.

South End Buttery Always Good
A nice atmosphere, good food, and a friendly professional staff has me coming back to the Buttery again and again. An ever changing menu keeps it interesting and reasonable prices allows it to be a regular for both weeknights and weekends.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
Before our visit this past Saturday we were last here in June. Since then it seems like everything has been brought up a notch - the service, the food and the cocktail menu. Our bartender/server Mikey was knowledgeable, capable and amiable. He made great recommendations that totally steered us in the right direction like the seasonal Winter Whisky Mash. Kudos also to the kitchen. Perfectly crisped parmesan-garlic fries w/truffle aioli were simply the best fries I've ever had. There was a sublime cider-brined pork chop special. From farm, to butcher, to kitchen to table - everything done to that meat was perfection. Scuttlebutt is more additions to the cocktail menu in a couple of weeks. We are very much looking forward to coming back.

We made a reservation and still waited about 25 minutes

Buttery Birthday Brunch
The only problem with The Buttery is the tables are close and getting in-out is difficult. But, if table(s) were removed, it would be impossible to get a reservation ...and the food is too good for that !! And, the wait staff makes the tight fit pleasant ...and they are great at what they do...service with a smile to celebrate our friend's birthday over brunch !!

Overall and excellent experience
Overall and excellent experience after theater matinee. Cozy, warm, great food, presented nicely. Loved my salmon with parsnip puree.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
The Buttery is a nice place for a wholesome meal and nice atmosphere. The chicken parmesan was very substantial and delicious, but the pork chop that my wife had was truly outstanding. We really enjoyed it.

Great Dinner Ambience
Friendly and attentive staff made the dinner dining a relaxing experience. The downstairs atmosphere with the stone work and fireplace is a cozy spot to enjoy a winter night. Tasty sauces were served with appetizers. Dinner was well presented and delicious. Only suggestion would be to offer a few more choices- and maybe some sides. The menu does offer enough choices to appeal to most diners. Wine list is excellent and deserts decadent and delicious. What more could one ask for? A shout out to the entire staff for a job extremely well done. A neighborhood gem.
