Hiding in plain sight
Here we have a restaurant that, for years, has been operating in a neighborhood with extraordinary eating options. Those of us who know about it are pretty glad that it's around, and that the rest of you haven't noticed. Novita's Italian good is light, very tasty and totally reliable. I have eaten here dozens of times and never had even a so-so dish. At lunch, two people can put together three appetizers, which are good sized, and have a series of different, delicious tastes. This time, for a party of three, one of us ordered a hearty squid ink pasta with seafood while two of us shared a special appetizer of lobster, crab and mango and then their long-running papardelle with lamb ragu. Service is unobtrusive and terrific.

Waiter spilled drink on me
Waiter spilled drink on me and became very defensive. Then decided he couldn't be our waiter anymore. Comp a "free" dessert. Upon leaving the waiter told me I should come back and get a "free" drink

A true neighborhood gem. My only complaint, whoch others have noted is the number of tables they cram into their space. I guess they have point, we were there on a Tuesday and the place was packed. Fortunately, the food WAY more than makes up for it. I dont think you could wrong with anything on the menu.

Civilized. Lovely place. Food was good. Pastas were exceptional. Service attentive but somewhat impersonal.
We introduced the restaurant to friends. We all overall enjoyed the evening. Some of the non-pasta dishes were somewhat lacking.

Simply extraordinary. Out of 4 people with different 3 course meals, NOBODY could complain about anything.

Food and service were really good for the moderate price

The food was outstanding. I got lobster and shrimp pasta special. Pasta was homemade and light red sauce was perfect. My friend got the black pasta and it was great too! Very small but actually loved the way tables were set up. Very busy and service was good.

Very good, reliable and quiet
We are staying in the Gramercy neighborhood for a month and wanted to find a neighborhood place for dinner. Something simple, quiet, not too expensive and delicious. We enjoyed a quiet table for two indoors, but will reserve a table outside next time (especially because the summer weather has been so lovely). Red wine, asparagus antipasti, salmon and filet mignon - these were our selections, all of which were prepared according to our special requests (no salt, rare, sauces on the side). Service was attentive and friendly. Atmosphere was quiet, elegant and clean. Prices were appropriate. All in all it was an enjoyable dining experience in the neighborhood and we will return!

Everything's perfect here. Ultimate date venue and outstanding food.

The menu was not the same as what we read on the website prior to our arrival. It was a little foodie but there were items for non-foodies, as well. The buckwheat pasta with shrimp and artichokes was delicious. The shrimp were large and plump and cooked properly. The artichokes added a great flavor. Yummy hard-crusted bread at the table with delicious oil. We did not have dessert. I would return and recommend the restaurant.

Have eaten here a few times in the past year and they never disappoint. Service is outstanding; food is the reason to go here. The restaurant is certainly small and may feel cramped, especially of you are having a business lunch - you can overhear and hence will be heard obey other tables.

Always a great experience
I got to Novita a lot. I take people there for business lunches and go more socially for dinner. The food is always extremely well prepared and presented. The regular menu is great, especially a number of the almost meal size salads, and the specials are always based on the best of the local markets. The wait staff have been there forever and are attentive and knowledgeable. No big egos here, just reliably top-notch Italian food.
8/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
As always an amazing experience in everyway. No matter what client I bring here they return on their own.
8/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Charming upscale ambiance, noise level was quite tolerable---we were able to hold an engaging conversation among three people. The service was excellent---wait staff informed, accommodating, and informative. Food was delicious. Menu extensive but not overwhelming and varied and unusual.

Went to eat here with my girlfriend before a concert at the Gramercy Theater. Service was excellent as was the food and food selection. Nice atmosphere and we just generally really enjoyed our time. Would def go back.

We only had a quick dinner and both of us had a salad and pasta dishes but they were really good. We definitely going back there and try something else.

Wonderful! Totally delightful meal!
I am super picky and have tons of dietary restraints, that being said I was thrilled with my dinner. Usually I get stuck with bland food. This was flavorful. Wonderful ingredients that are treated with deference and respect.

Great food, but tight space
Food and service were excellent, but your elbows and knees may knock into your fellow diners when busy. Midweek dinner was jammed.

Novita is a great neighborhood Italian restaurant, with a chef who can be a little inventive without going overboard. The linguini with Kobe beef bolognese was a fantastic addition to an already wonderful menu. it's a perfect lunch spot in the Gramercy Park area.

Total Gem of a restaurant. We loved every minute of our meal and so did our parents from out of town!! The food is so delicious and the ambience is perfect. Romantic, yet casual, yet inviting. We loved it! Best Italian in the city!

Too many tables in too little space. Lousy service. Great food.

Seats R so uncomfortable. The only reason I wouldn't go back & also wouldn't recommend to friends. It's a shame because the food & service R excellent.

Perfect food, friendly low-key
Perfect food, friendly low-key service, calm ambience, a satisfying wine-list - Novita is a neighborhood wonder. We had sea bass, tuna steak, and pasta with pesto, each dish memorable for freshness and a refined harmony. Simple but subtle. There is no glitz here, only excellence.
10/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great place. The food was great, like literally great. It was a bit cramped. If you go, ask for a table against a wall. The free standing tables in the middle of the place are right in the flight path.

Recently, I took my 13 yrs. old daughter to NYC for her birthday. We went to Novita's for her birthday dinner. It was delicious! This is a small, cramped, typical NYC neighborhood yesterday which was filled with locals. Great area and not hard to find. I highly recommend giving it a try. Was a wonderful change of pace and escape from all of the tourists. I had the best gnocchi I've had in a long time.
10/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not a scene.
It's civilized and pretty with well-prepared and imaginative food and service, and we could have a conversation (at least on a week night at 6:00).

Delicious food, great service, vibrant but not frenetic atmosphere.

Novita continues to be one of the Gramercy neighborhoods most dependable Italian spots. Food is excellent with gracious if occasionally hurried service. Good and fairly priced wine list. We prefer Novita to the nearby Maialino.

Lovely evening with friends
Selected this restaurant not realizing we'd been there before. Our friends were in town from SF and we were proud to share this dining experience with real foodies. Priced right, great flavors and friendly service. Perfect evening.

Don't know how this neighborhood gem gets missed in the reviews, but our experience was great on all counts. Located in Grammercy area a block from the subway station it was very accessible. We had appetizers and entree's paired with a nice Brunello. We weren't rushed (stayed 2 hours) and are planning to come back. Everything was perfect.

Food Fit for a King, Service Not
Food hit the spot – Classics made interesting with high quality ingredients and preparation and seasoned to perfection.
Service did not hit the spot -- Thirty minute wait after being on time for the reservation, host abandoned us midway to our table and we had to fend for ourselves on if it was the right table, ladies were not helped into their seats and waiter ignored us until palmed money.
Food is a cut above and service several cuts below.

I love Novita -- not for it's spartan decor and sardine-can seating -- but for its dependably delicious Italian cuisine. Dinner at Novita never disappoints.

The fifth star requires timing
Novita is a four star neighborhood restaurant that would get a fifth star if it was more spacious (or I was thinner). Beautiful, stylish Italian restaurant where they will make what they have the way you want it. Fish options are outstanding, appetizers a little pricey, but all selections (we had a great octopus salad to start) are prepared carefully.
Go try it, no disappointment possible.

Great for business lunch
Space is small enough not to get too noisy. Choices of dishes are healthy and well made. Fresh pasta is the best.

Solid Italian Place
Overall, a pleasing experience. Place stuck to basics of Italian menu & execution; stress on highlighting underlying ingredients. Ricotta-stuffed zucchini florets served w/ prosciutto were excellent, except if blind-tested, felt like anything well executed in a light airy batter, not necessarily florets. Porcini misti appetizer was just right texturally & balanced w/ saltiness of cheese. The osso buco entrée was a winner - rustic, ample size (like all other portions), bone marrow was delectable & the sauce was a good match for the dish. Linguini w/white truffle was great, again few ingredients done right. Dessert were on par with the rest. We were lucky to have early seating; it gets very crowded and noisy after 7:30 - romantic no more
