At last! And worth the wait...
For several DAT sessions we've been attempting to get to Campton Place, but failed--it was a day they weren't offering DAT, or reservations were filled, etc. We finally managed it, and it was worth the wait! The food was a revelation..a bit of welcome novelty in the molecular gastronomy, but nothing 'precious' or technology for technology's sake. For example, the chef's amuse bouche was a foam of green apple, arugula and avocado that was perfectly balanced and melted on the tongue. The salmon and chicken both featured crisp, tasty skins--possibly removed and rendered separately, then re-united with the meat and perfectly cooked. Location is ideal, just off Union Square.

I absolutely love this restaurant. The food and wine are exceptional, but the service is among the best in the area. Phillipe always makes each visit memorable.

For his birthday, my father requested a restaurant with traditional elegance: attentive service, elegant ambiance, and of course fantastic food. After reading many Open Table reviews, I selected Campton Place. It worked particularly well because the chef uses a range of Asian spices. My father is on a low-salt diet, and some venues we've tried don't seem to know how to turn out a flavor-rich meal without it. We loved everything we had: crab salad, heirloom tomatoes, lobster curry, slow roasted chicken and a number of desserts. The maitres were extremely helpful. And it was perfect for quiet conversation. This style of place isn't for everyone, but if you miss the days when dining out was a special occasion I recommend Campton Place.

Perfect Union Square
Started our Union Square afternoon with lunch at Campton Place. First time here of what we now expect will be many, many returns.
Comfortable and helpful service, lovely room, great location and most especially exceptional food. The dishes were fun, creative and not heavy.
Now we need to go there for dinner!

Wonderful service and great food
Great for a special occasion. We ordered the taste of spice menu with wine pairings. Not cheap but absolutely worth the money. Having been for lunch this was the first time we had dined in the evening. Same great service which is formal without being stuffy. The 6 courts tasting menu has 2 amuse Bouches plus a pre dessert! So 9 different wonderful dishes. Pairings were very good. A real great place for a special occasion or after shopping treat.

Excellent Spice Tasting Menu
We had their spice tasting menu with wine pairing. I was a bit leery about the Indian influence on fine dining, but just about everything turned out fabulous. Some of the items had a moderate flavor on first bite, but then the flavors exploded the longer you chewed. The presentations were very creative. Definitely worth a return.

Wonderful birthday celebration
We had the Spice by the Bay tasting menu with paired wine selections. It was fabulous. The first course, "Spice Pot," is served in
a small glazed flower pot that sits on a large saucer. The saucer is filled with river stones AND a chunk or two of dry ice, which creates the San Francisco Fog effect. It is a spectacular presentation and wonderful flavors!!! Each of the six courses was presented beautifully and was delicious in its own way: Dungeness Crab, Alaskan Halibut, Poussin (very young chicken) and Slow Cooked Lamb Rack. Can't recommend the restaurant, the food, or the service highly enough. It was one of those rare, memorable dinners.

Fantastic food and great location
Just off Union Square
We loved the food.
Like a lot of Michelin-starred restaurants, we felt like we got the best value by ordering the shortest "menu". The chefs always throw in a lot of secret courses, so what was on paper a 3 course dinner, seemed like a 6-7 course dinner with the amuse bouche and palate-cleansers.

Best I've ever had
Superbly artistic tasting menu. In my 50+ years this was the best meal I've ever eaten. Priciest too, of course, but worth it.

Excellent food and service.
Excellent food and service. The chef is very creative, using modern methods and correct amounts of herbs and spices to present a wonderful dining experience. Compton Place has had a long line and tradition for attracting great chefs.

Continues to shine
We have been to Campton Place 6 times in the last 1+ years and we are always very pleased with our experience. Our visits have been equally split between lunch and dinner. The food is always outstanding and this time was no exception. The Tuna appetizer on the menu this past Sunday was the best I have ever had. I always order something my wife does not order so we can experience more of their menu and both the salmon and the tenderloin were outstanding. As always, I can confidently recommend Campton Place to anyone who enjoys food. And for those that don't, try it and you'll find you will, at least at Campton Place.
8/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
The service was really exceptional throughout, with attention to detail and a very god attitude to customers, which is rare these days. The ambience is nice, slightly understated but opulent and spacious. Food is good and well presented (breakfast menu)
Overall thoroughly recommended.

Take the leap! It's worth it!
My husband and I overcame our initial hesitancy and decided to "oh heck" try the place. We both had the 6 course prix-fix dinner, and boy are we glad we did!
Everything about the meal was a delight. The first course was a feast to the eyes as well as the mouth. My dish was the perfect combination of cool, creamy, slightly crunchy, and slightly tangy. The most surprising part was the dry ice "fog" surrounding the dish. I felt like I'm eating the SF skyline!
The rest of the meal was even better. I won't describe every dish, but suffice it to say we enjoyed every bite. The friendly and helpful staff made the experience even better. My water glass was never empty and every question I had about the food was answered with enthusiasm and mirth.

Elegant, creative flair
Everything about the meal was first-class, from the ambience of the room, to the pacing, to the exceptional service, to the quality and originality of the dishes. The restaurant boasts of an exceptional wine list, and we tried a great pinot as well as fun cocktails beforehand. Memorable dishes included the "Spice Pot" appetizer, a creamy, tangy, sweet and crunchy samosa-like experience in a tall urn surrounded by a steaming dry-ice fog, the Maine lobster, the halibut main course, truly memorable with a moist, with a crunchy, nutty shellfish crust, black rice and and side of unusual beans and legumes, and the angus beef, which was surprisingly tender and flavorful, paired with baby squash blossoms, truffles, and a sweet corn puree-mash.
8/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Fine dinning with an Indian twist
I had the tasting menu with wine pairing and my wife had the vegetarian tasting menu each with six courses. The amuse bouche was very good and the tomato salad was outstanding. The halibut was sublime and the shrimp was very good. The wine pairings were spot on. The entire staff was very professional, courteous and helpful. We look forward to a return visit.

Campton could be better
First the good: small elegant dining room with reduced noise that allows diners to talk. Good food and good service. Great location near Union Square and shopping.
Now the bad: Campton has four fixed menus - three course; two six courses; one nine course. That would be fine but we were told that all four at our table had to order the same fixed menu - either 3, 6, or 9...no mixing! I almost walked out but since we were with friends I did not want to make a fuss. The corkage fee was $50 dollars - higher than almost all the other Michelin restaurants we have been to! And the fixed menu food while prepared excellently, was too dominated by meat. There were no soups or vegetables, but rather four courses of meat. Not for everyone.

Expensive, but good value
I had not dined at Campton Place for many years, and was pleased to revisit it at a friend's suggestions. Elegant place, impeccable service, and excellent food. Six course tasting menus (we tried each of the two options - market and spicy, and then shared) were $95/person, plus optional $85/head wine pairing (we ordered one, and shared it - the pours were reasonably generous). The restaurant also gave us 2-3 additional small plates. Well worth it for a special meal/occasion (the food was significantly better than the Fifth Floor, where I also recently dined). The restaurant also called me in advance to see if I had food allergies, particular preferences, etc., so my guess is that they would accommodate vegans, vegetarians, etc.

Positive and Memorable Experience
My husband and I went there for his birthday. We were treated like royalty. The service was excellent and the food was incredible. The food was absolutely one of - if not THE - best in San Francisco and the world. We will be talking about this for a while.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
Quiet and classy
It's hard to find that rare combination of amazing food, superb service, and a place where the decibel level lets you actually have a conversation with business partners, friends, or your honey. This is that restaurant. The food, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, will always be excellent---the service somehow manages to be always present, but never intrusive (this is in marked contrast to, say, Gary Danko or The French Laundry, where it seems service often intrudes on your conversations), and the setting is quiet and calming---and allows for real conversations where everyone at a table can hear you, and you can hear everyone else.

Tasting menu was incredible
I'm a fan of tasting menus. The checf's menu we had at Campton was fun, creative, balanced, delicious, and inspiring. We had several "I've never had anything like this" moments where the delight of the dish was so far beyond just the taste and presentation. This was a fantastic meal.

Fantastic birthday wine pairing
On 30th of September we had amazing dinner experience at Campton Place restaurant in San Francisco, California. It is our family tradition to celebrate our Birthdays at lovely eating-places. Campton Place happened to be a marvelous venue to enjoy delicious menu and to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We took three dishes menu and every plate carried an example of great taste. It was wine pairing that struck and impressed us most. The stunning revelation is the best words to describe our feelings rising with every glass of precisely chosen wine. We’d like to say a lot of thanks to every person at Campton Place who helped us to feel happy on 30th of September 2013. Anna and Oleg Paralyush, Moscow, Russia.

French fare w/ Indian influences
Had the Degustation Menu with a combo from all the menus. The flavor was incredible. There was only 1 out of the 9 courses that I thought was pretty boring. The menu was creative and unique with slight Indian flavor influences that I thought worked really well. We put it up there with Keiko and above many other 1 Michelin starred restaurants. They didn't cram in too many talbes, so the ambiance was nice, not crowded, not noisy. Overall a great experience. Would have given 5 stars except for the 1 dish that missed the mark and the desserts that weren't mind blowing. But to be fair, I'm not a big fan of Asian desserts.
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Superb in every way. The menu was exceptional both because of quality and uniqueness. Only prix fixe offered. I would have liked a la carte choice.
Because of formidable cost, this is best for special occasions.

Accolades we'll deserved.
This restaurant surpassed its reviews, all of which we're excellent.

Fabulous dining experience
Top notch restaurant on all respects. The meal was delicious and beautifully presented and the service very attentive.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food at Campton Place is now tinged with a bit of Indian spice, just enough to make the food exotic, though still delicious. Only problem was that it took two hours for lunch and if we had plans for the afternoon they would have been blown. Two hours is more like what would be expected at dinner. Otherwise a fine meal.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Outstanding in every way.
Outstanding in every way. Food was creative and cooked to perfection; Michelin star is well deserved. Suggested wine pairings complemented the food and service was helpful and attentive. Definitely will go back.

Excellent food and service
I was celebrating my eight dating anniversary with my fiancee. That was no doubt one of the best restaurants that we have ever visited.

Fantastic but lonely
We had a fantastic meal at Campton Place. It was an anniversary dinner and so we were fine with spending an outrageous amount of money for a special dinner, and Campton Place did not disappoint on either score. We thoroughly enjoyed our food, which was imaginative and extremely tasty, and enjoyed the more expensive wine pairing. Everything, including the friendly and attentive service, was terrific. However, it was a Monday night and there were only three or four tables in the entire restaurant, so it felt a bit empty. It was perfect for a quiet, romantic dinner.

A wonderful place to celebrate
We had a very memorable experience at Campton Place. Have been celebrating special occasions there for many years. This is a class act. Thank you staff, chef and all who make it such a happy experience with delicious food.

This restaurant, in the Campton Place Hotel by Union Square, was very nice, if not a bit sterile. The wait staff were extremely efficient, if not overly friendly, and always made sure beverages were checked.
The booths are very comfortable, and even come with pillows for those diners who are not tall. The brunch menu was small but nice, and the actual food was prepared wonderfully, I believe the country potatoes that came with mine were cooked to perfection.
If you are looking for a nice brunch this is definitely a place to consider.

My Partner and I were in San Francisco and on the recommendation of a friend we booked a reservation at the Campton Place.
We arrived early and had a outstanding Manhattan in the bar and then were sat in the Dining room. We selected the 6 course tasting menu and were thrilled with our choice.. The food was outstanding and the service fantastic. If we lived in San Francisco we would be regulars.

Excellent pre-theater dinner
Just ate at Campton Rest for a quick pre-theater dinner. I didn't know that they only offer pre-fix menus. We had a 3-course meal and let the waiter know that we wanted to get out of there in ~90min. Everything worked out great. The dishes were delicious and the service very attentive. They timed it all right, so we didn't feel rushed and still were able to get out of there quickly. It's a pricey restaurant, but the food was differentiated enough to justify it. Definitely going back.

Great food, but service falls short
Campton Place provided a memorable Thanksgiving meal. The room and dishes looked great, and the food was very good. However, the wait staff was young and inexperienced which detracted from the overall experience. I also did not appreciate the adders to the prix fixe meal which added more than 30% ($140) to the overall tab - for 2 glasses of champagne and 4 truffel shavings!
Overall, I would recommend Campton Place to friends with the caveat to be prepared for the upsell.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
The idea of eating out on thanksgiving is depressing to me in general but we had such a marvelous evening at Campton place that I forgot to be depressed. The food was both lovely to look at and delicious. I love to have multiple small courses -- no huge slabs of meat. The dishes were novel without being ridiculous. Service was a little rough a couple of times but still very good. All I really missed was a piece of pie!
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
We had not eaten at Campton Place for a couple of years and I had forgotten how good the food was. Inventive, but not weird (no moss scraped from the trees in the Presidio) and just delicious. The chef used some common high end ingredients -- black truffles, oysters with caviar, lobster -- but all with a bit of a twist. There is clearly an Indian influence here but with the lightest touch. We won't wait two years to return.
11/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
Solid tasting menu
Good tasting menu, can definitely taste certain Indian flavors, pace is pretty good if you tell them you're kind of working with a time constraint. Definitely worth a try on a special occasion.
11/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
We thought the food at Campton Place was sensational. The food was unique, very contemporary and full of flavor.
I was very impressed. We had 6 courses (plus the cheese dish) and enjoyed every dish.
