It is Japanese food like you never had before. Delicate subtlety is the best descriptor, dinner is like meditating on a peaceful mossy rock overlooking a placid pond with koi fish.

Delicious Yummy and Memorable
The food is absolutely delicious here. I brought a potential client here for a business dinner. We tried their 8 course tasting menu which was very tasty, fresh and unique. The waitstaff was very attentive. I would definitely come here again. This is a great place for a business meeting as it is not too loud either. If you love sake, they've got a wonderful selection. And if you drive, parking around this neighborhood was easy.

It was our first time there since it change from Danube. My wife and I were there to celebrate our anniversary.
The wait staff was very professional and was very attentive to our ever need.
We were even offered items that were not even on the menu. I guess it was our lucky day.
Overall the food was delightful and creatively done.
Well worth a return visit if time and money permits.

every course was a delight. unexpected yet familiar. will be back again!
5/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
We ordered the 9 course tasting menu.
Every dish is a piece of heart. My favorite course was the duck breast, I have never eaten duck so tender before.
5/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
I picked the restaurant to go with a colleague for a food-night-out who had a preference for Japanese, and he came out grinning from ear to ear after our kaiseki dinner (not to mention my own smiles). The staff were commendable - professional yet intimate and friendly. The menu is well thought of in my opinion.
He's going back again - and so will I.

We had a very enjoyable dinner.
We had a very enjoyable dinner. The tasting menu and the Spring special are both excellent. The food is delicious, the taste is extraodinay. the prsentation is exactly what a kaseiki is all about. Cold sake is to die for. We will be back.

I was expecting Japanese, but it was more an Americanized version of Japanese. Maybe it didn't have the zen one might have been expecting, but in the end this is all good. It's better to try to stand out, be unique, etc. than try to copy something else. I had the kaiseki with wine/sake pairings. Comparing it to the kaiseki I had in Kyoto, I think it missed the mark in being appealing to all five senses. That being said, it did hit the mark in the most important sense -- TASTE! But it varied. It ranged from awesome to mediocre, but the good far outweighed the mediocre. Or in other words, mediocre was the exception rather than the rule.
Bottom line, I'd recommend it.

Sashimi is excellent, as are
Sashimi is excellent, as are the soups and salads. However, they missed with the tempura soft-shelled crab: uni sauce made it mushy, and crab had a strange metallic taste to it. Also, the rice lobster dish was way overcooked.

Dreaming of Sushi
Brushstroke brings the precision and perfection of Japanese food presentation and cooking to Japan.
6/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Enjoyed an outstanding Keiseki dinner at Brushstroke. Beautifully presented, one delicious course followed another. We had the paired wines/sakes with each course and they complemented beautifully. A very special evening.

Birthday Dinner - great food
Came here for my boyfriend's birthday. The food and service were top notch. The food selection was amazing. We had the $85 Tasting menu and upgraded the Sashimi to the Chef's Sashimi Selection $28 and also added the $100 wine and sake pairing. The presentation of the plates was truly amazing.
They did send out another dessert for us and added a candle yet that I would have expected since they knew it was a birthday celebration anyway given plus $400 dinner .

Simply put...INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE!
Sushi/sashimi is some of my favorite food. I have had the pleasure of eating it all over the world at some of the top sushi/sashimi restaurants in cities like Tokyo, NYC, LA, Santa Monic, Beverly Hills, London, etc. The experience, food quality, uniqueness of ingredients, ambiance, etc, was the best I have ever had. I highly recommend this restaurant! Mr. Bouley has done it again!

Brushstroke was Beyond
One of the best food experiences I've ever had - even comparing to meals in Japan. Every detail was delivered with care and depth. Every course delighted and surprised us. The more we savored each bite, the more I fell in love (with Brushstroke and with my husband for coming with me even thigh he'd be fine at home.) We celebrated our anniversary here, and I would come back next year. The prix fixe $ might be a bit daunting for some, but the quality of the food and service was beyond expectations. A truly special dining experience in quaint TriBeCa.
8/1/2013 5:00:00 PM
Every single dish on the tasting menu was spectacular. From the exquisite ingredients, to the flawless preparation and presentation, we love every minute of it! It is the perfect synergy of traditional japanese cuisine and the masterful creativity of cosmopolitan world-class chefs. The beverage selection was also fantastic, among the very best in the City.

Simply unbelievable to have
Simply unbelievable to have this kind of food and service in NYC. You feel as if you are in Tokyo!

We were floored by the authenticity
We were floored by the authenticity and clean ingredients of each course. A friend who is a native of Japan was equally impressed with the quality of the meal. We agreed to return very soon.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Okay, perhaps the dessert was a slight miss but otherwise truly outstanding food in a classy, elegant atmosphere. Our server Richard was especially outstanding and guided us deftly through the whole experience.
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Another incredible Bouley experience. We tried the kaiseki menu with pairings...had one of the best sakes we have ever tasted (aged Koji), and course after course of fantastic combinations, approaches, contrasts, etc. Even something as simple as a cold soup course came with a garnish of "popcorn shoots" that provided and wonderful surprise. Well worth the investment in a memorable evening and eating experience. (Try the Tarragon Shiso cocktail...wonderful combination of unusual ingredients.)
8/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Bouley never disappoint me
The staffs were professional. It was very inviting and welcoming. Most importantly the food was amazing. My favorite was the duck & wagyu beef and my least favorite was Sashimi. Sake selection was good but red wine selection by glass was not so great. I had great experience. I strongly recommend this place.

Delicious food in a refined setting
I picked this restaurant as a treat for a friend who did me a favour and our experience did not disappoint. We really love the ambiance of the restaurant: calm, relaxed, and friendly without being ostentatious and over the top. The restaurant only offers seasonal tasting menus and we tried the regular (i.e., non-seasonal) and vegetarian tasting menus. The food was really delicious: fresh, light, and just the right portion. A couple of stand-outs: the duck, the kingfish, and for me, everything on the vegetarian menu! The cocktails, especially the Tarragon Shiso and the Japanese Cucumber with Almond were perfect for the summer: cool, refreshing and NOT fruity or sweet. Service was a bit slow in the beginning but very good overall.

Creative and Superb
Brushstroke is nothing less than an exceptional culinary and aesthetic experience. Each dish is presented in an impeccable and artful manner. The food is creative and nuanced in its combination of flavors. The staff is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and attuned to every need of their clients. Particularly intriguing are the savory custards that one rarely associates wtih Japanese cuisine. This is one of the best restaurants in New York City.

A new Classic
Came to visit my brother and family and dare to suggest the restaurant. As proud locals, they reluctantly accepted my recommendation. The reservation process, smooth as it could be obviously using Open Table. However availability suggested that it might not be a bad idea after all.
Location is great in a trendy neighborhood, great decor, and very friendly hosts proved that great restaurants do not need to be arrogant and rude.
Cocktail menu limited but great.
Options on the main dining room are the 6 or 8 course fixed menus. Please ALWAYS go for the 8!
Service was "professional" and fast, dishes were nicely presented, and food was amazing!
Without hesitation, one that need to be visited if you think you been to the best restaurants in NY
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great Japanese cuisines by using fresh ingredients. In addition, it is impressive that even Japanese local beers are available.
9/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Eight Mouth watering courses - just when you think you cant taste anythingmlre delicious than noodles with uni another exquisite dish comes along. Can't wait to return.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
great food and drinks, decent service although we had to wait 20 min for our cocktails and a waiter -- the only non-japaneese -- tried to take away my digestif before it was empty. when i said no, she replied rudely: "gimme your other glass, then". as a result i cutted the tips dramatically. shame, because it is a really nice place. i noticed that it wasn't full on a friday night. our meaø came to 500 incl tip.

Outstanding service, beautiful food
Celebrated my husband's birthday here. Staff was wonderful and accommodating. Everything was delicious though our favorite was dessert (soy milk panna cotta and green tea pudding).
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved every morsel. Presentation is extraordinary. Definitely underrated in Zagat's. Too bad it's so expensive, or we'd be there all the time.
9/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Meal of a lifetime
My partner and I treated ourselves to this fine dining experience and it was exactly that!
Silver service from polite and helpful staff; gorgeous venue, and above all the food was a clear demonstration of the Michelin star capacity of this venue - a night to be remembered forever :)
9/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Some delicious and subtle
Some delicious and subtle surprises in the six-course tasting menu -- even if not in the rather ordinary meat courses, which were a letdown after the outstanding savory custard and fish.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything about this is exquisite
This is about the fifth time we've eaten here and honestly I don't know why we bother going anywhere else! The restaurant is a beautiful mix of wood, glass and air.
There are three tasting menus to choose from - we go for the more modest 8 course one! Each dish is beautifully served - our first with a big flower on top - all of then Instagram worthy in their own right.
The food is delicious - from mushroom with tofu to shashimi to lobster then salmon and rice - each portion the right size to be satisfying but not overwhelming.
It is a memorable experience dining at brushstroke and I look forward to many more visits!

I had heard many good things
I had heard many good things about Brushstroke, and I had tried its French sister restaurant next door Bouley twice already, so I was excited for my dinner at Brushstroke to say the least. Upon entering, Brushstroke struck me as a quiet and serene getaway from the hustle-bustle of New York City. The table settings were simplistic yet refined and patrons can easily view the sushi-making from any corner of the restaurant. My friends and I chose the $85 chef's tasting menu. Each dish was very small, yet the flavors were robust and fresh. My favorite was the first dish with the vegetables and jelly. I thought it was a bit pricey for the amount of food given, however I had a relaxing experience with friends on a Friday night at Brushstroke.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
A wonderful experience
Wonderful place and excellent food. We ordered the tasting menu which was flawless, one of the best sashimi I've ever had, including Japan.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
It is nice to finally have a kaiseki restaurant in new york with great dishes.
Had tried different ones in the city but never quite was impressed but here you will feel transported to another place ingredients are more European but preparation very Japanese cuisine.
Will go back to try some of the other dishes
10/20/2013 5:00:00 PM
The food, drink were excellent and the service was incredible. A wonderful evening!
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
A stroke of genius!
You cannot prepare for the "brushstroke" experience. Although beyond words, I will try to share some insight about what you can expect. A first dish opens an iron gate into an unknown world of flavors and texture. You are now set to expect the unexpectable and you won't be disappointed. The tasting goes crescendo, mixing culinary techniques from Japan and classical ones on extremely carefully chosen premium ingredients: some known, some unknown, some unguessable. Black Oregon truffle and egg custard sounds classical, but the chef transports you beyond a looking glass, in a new dimension filled with mystery and delight. Service is impeccable, and extremely attentive. The sommelier chooses intriguing wines and sakes for a marvelous pairing.

Great dining experience.
We had a great dining experience at this restaurant. Everything was just outstanding. Well deserved Michelin!
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was excellent. The tasting menu delivers surprise after surprise, all of them good. It's an expensive place, but worth it.
10/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
It doesn't get much better
First went here within a few months of its opening, and have been coming back ever since. Every time, it's a fantastic dining experience. Extraordinary food and friendly, pleasant wait staff who patiently describe each unique course. If we didn't live on the Upper West Side, we'd be dining here weekly.
11/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
I enjoyed challenging sprit which I cannot find in Japan.
Also, I found a new possibility of making Japanese cuisine more global.
11/5/2013 4:00:00 PM
THIS IS A MASTERPIECE
THIS IS A MASTERPIECE. Over the last few years, we've been here a half dozen times. Service is flawless. Food presentation is gorgeous. One dish in particular, Chawan Mushi, was beyond spectacular. This is a very serious enterprise presented by professionals and done with light hand. Have the 6 course "tasting dinner" and don't choose things with up charges. There is no need to order more. This is a 2 1/2 hour commitment and well worth it. And, as Dale says, it's not expensive compared with flying to Tokyo.
11/10/2013 4:00:00 PM
Good but too expensive
Three of us sat in the minimalist dining room and were served in a timely manner with a very knowledgable, friendly and attentive wait staff. We had opted for the 5 course tasting with the wine parings for the three of us. We were accommodated in our desire to mix up the dishes somewhat so we could have some variety to share among the three of us.
All dishes were tasty and innovative but not overly memorable. The parings were exceptionally well thought out and we were pleasantly surprised but not as surprised as the bill came to well over 700 dollars before any tip. To my mind excessive for what was served.
11/11/2013 4:00:00 PM
We celebrated a wonderful birthday dinner here. Service was immaculate - attentive, timely and considerate. The tasting offered an array of complex and sumptuous dishes - from the egg custard with black truffles, wagyu prepared two ways, to the Cornish game hen with rice in a deep and savory broth. Compliments to the chefs and service team at Brushstroke.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
What an experience! I am still thinking about the foie gras & lobster.....one of the best meals I have had in a long time. We had the special $135 tasting menu and were blown away. Seriously good food, served with the right amount of theater & flair. Can't wait to go back!!
11/18/2013 4:00:00 PM
Best service I've had in NY
I had my boyfriends (surprise) birthday dinner there with a large party of 9. We had the $85 tasting menu which was brilliant.
They were so accommodating with such a large group (large for NY standards).
6+ stars for the service, it was impeccable.
The food was truly an art form. The chef and kitchen staff brought taste to a whole new sensation. Dessert was a bit weird - but I wouldn't change a thing. Personally, I just was happy I was able to try dishes completely unlike anything I've had before.
The only complaint I have is that upon arrival the two staff at the front door completely blew the surprise for my boyfriend. We made it SO CLOSE!! Ah well.
Other than that I highly recommend it, and I hope to be back soon!
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
Closest things to a Tokyo nite out
Lived in Japan for 3 years. Finally find a place that brought me back to that culture, quality and care for refuned details. Great, great food!
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
The food was indeed awesome complemented by the excellent service. It is a complicated menu and it would be helpful to have the description written down in front of you - the waiters do tell you but it's rather fast and not easy to follow. It is expensive, especially if you opt for the sake and wines>
11/21/2013 4:00:00 PM
Kaiseki with a twist
The food was very good - not exactly traditional per se, but it was quite delicious. It was nice to see they had 3 women in the kitchen amongst all those men - something you don't see very often in Japanese kitchens.
12/6/2013 4:00:00 PM
High Quality food and service
Everything from beginning to end was fantastic. We had the tasting menu, and each dish was prepared with such amazing care and visually beatiful. True Japanese cuisine is to be appreciated first with your eyes, and then the taste. Presentation of each course was fantastic, and of course, it was all delicious!
All the servers were very attentive, and give you more than enough time to really enjoy the food. We did not feel rushed at all.
Elegant dining with high quality food, and warm, welcoming service, very nicely done! Definitely will go back there again, and do recommend others to go!

The food was incredible! Service
The food was incredible! Service was fantastic. If you really enjoy Kaiseki style Japanese food, this is the place to go.
